ROAD TRIP!!!!!
2011-05-28 10:06:00 [cue the traveling music] Some people hate being cooped up in a vehicle -- not me. I like riding and driving. I like watching the scenery change and trying to get as much open road behind me as possible. My grandfather and his brothers were car-crazy entrepreneurs and owned a taxi business; they did cross town and cross country trips... I guess it's just in my blood. Add to that driving gene the realization that the road rhythm soothes the savage boys and yeah... I really dig road trips. Genesis has always been a good rider *Well, there was that one time on the last leg of the Chicago to NY tour back in 2000, but he had just turned 1...
Part 2 of the Magical Baseball Stadium Road Trip
2011-05-02 23:26:00 Detroit/TorontoThe second part of our baseball road trip was quite interesting and fun. The first thing I learned was never.... ever... wear White Sox stuff to Comerica Park in Detroit, unless you are a true fan. You will instantly be harassed and belittled. If you are not man enough to handle it, don't even try.I consider myself a full blood White Sox fan and proudly sported my full White Sox gear in one of the biggest Sox hating cities in the world. The only time I thought about changing was when Adam Dunn was up to bat. It was almost crossing the line when the Tigers' fan made fun of me, while keeping my score card and keeping to myself,...

NHL- Blackhawks await six-game road trip after first home win since October
2010-11-16 03:24:00 This road trip could not have come at a better time for the Hawks. Despite blowing leads recently, the team seemed to be coming together. The passing has been less sloppy and Coach Q's adjustments to the defensive pairings appears to have woken up some of his defensemen. That being said, the Hawks' inability to close-out games was rising to alarming levels. Thankfully, for the time being, Stalberg has taken all of our minds off that.
This road trip is kicking my ass.
2010-09-12 20:32:00 This road trip is ummm...interesting. You have no idea. Allow me to complain...oops, I mean, allow me to explain.
I'm outta here: Leaving for my month long road trip on September 3rd.

Great American Baseball Road Trip Day Seven: Camden Yards
2010-08-22 04:57:00 "Have you been to Camden Yards?" I've heard this question so many times over the years when I've talked about all the parks I've been to with people. And it was one of the few parks I'd never been to and always wanted to see. We drove to Baltimore and visited Fort McHenry and then the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum which is just blocks from Camden. It was alright, a little light on the memorabilia, but still I was happy I went. It made me miss Old Yankee Stadium though. From there we found a place to park for free on William and Montgomery streets by the Science Center. There was free parking for two hours...
Great American Baseball Road Trip Day Six: Yankee Stadium (Again)
2010-08-22 04:54:00 Our second trip to Yankee Stadium was at least weather wise nice. It was a day game, which I generally hate, but we were lucky because our seats were in the shade the whole time. Otherwise, this would have been completely miserable. We showed up at game time for the first time for a game, which made the game fly by. And since the Tigers decided to play their B lineup, they didn't do a whole lot and were pretty much destroyed. Any time you give up 9 runs in an inning, things generally don't turn out well for you, which is exactly what the Tigers did in the 6th. But a couple things I noticed from...
Great American Baseball Road Trip Day One: Paul McCartney Concert
2010-08-15 18:16:00 The last time I was at the Wachovia Center, it was for a pretty memorable event. I found myself back there Saturday, albeit for a slightly less monumental event. But not by a ton. I'm a huge Beatles fan. I was Paul McCartney in my forth grade wax museum. In 10th grade I was John Lennon for my end of the year final for my AP American history class (the fact that he's British and was a ridiculous choice finally hit me this year. My first concert ever was Ringo Starr in 1994. Last year I wrote to him the day after he announced he was going to stop signing autographs, sent him a photo I took at one of...
5 reasons why a road trip with the family doesn’t completely suck
2010-07-23 21:54:00 Every summer, the Durkin Robinson gang usually takes off to see something new. Chicago Cubs Monday Headlines: So Much for an Easy Road Trip
2010-05-10 12:57:00 Rather than let the bullpen blow another game for the Cubs yesterday, Lou Piniella left in Ryan Dempster to take care of shutting down the Reds after Tyler Colvin's go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh. That didn't turn out well."He said he was fine," Piniella said of Dempster. "Two runs, 5 hits over 7 innings. Our bullpen's beat up. The guy hit it out of the ballpark. What are you going to do? "Marshall was ready. Dempster, I went out to check him. He told me he was fine. We left him in the ballgame. We still had to pitch the eighth. The game wasn't over in the seventh. "If he had told me he was tired,...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 8 - Na Bolom Museum in San Cristobal Chiapas
2010-04-29 22:06:00 It was a beautiful day today and we wanted to make the most of it. We stopped in for a quick breakfast at BioMaya and then set off to visit the Mayan Museum, Na Bolom. I had heard this was a must see but really had no idea what to expect. Located a good distance from our hotel, we chose to cab it, arriving before noon just as the city was starting to warm up.Cole tries the fresh beet juice. Not a hit.Na Bolom was founded by Danish archeologist Franz Blom and his wife, Gertrude. Gertrude was an avid painter and photographer and an environmental activist. In 1951, Franz and Gertrude purchased and rebuilt an abandoned seminary in San Cristobal, converting it into their private residence and a research library dedicated to Mayan studies. Here they invited other like minded explorers and scientists to come and stay to study and document the Mayan civilization, past and present. Franz and Gertrude had a particular interest in the Lacandon Maya, a small group located in the south wes...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 7 - Sumidero Canyon and Zinacantan
2010-04-18 18:18:00 On day seven of our adventure it was the girls turn to sleep in. Rob and Cole had breakfast at the organic coffee shop, BioMaya, right next door to our hotel and then ventured over to the zocalo to watch the vendors setting up for the day. Birdie and I woke up late and I took advantage of the internet in our room, a welcomed first, to catch up on email and do a blog entry. Internet has been hard to come by in our accommodations and I have given up trying to maintain any semblance of a schedule. Lots of burning and clearing going on in the hills Our plan for the day was to catch a boat tour of the Sumidero Canyon located about an hour west near the capital, Tuztla Gutierrez. In contrast to Palenque, this part of Chiapas experiences true seasons. Many of the trees were just starting to sprout leaves after a cold winter. We even saw road signs advising caution in the event of snow! In order to save time, we took the cuota road, shaving twenty minutes off of our drive time and preservi...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 6 - San Cristobal de las Casas
2010-04-15 14:00:00 This morning in San Cristobal was cloudy and quite cool. We were all well rested and ready to go so we hustled into the bright courtyard for breakfast. Finally able to access the internet, we had a lot of email to catch up on and pictures to upload. The weather being what it was, I marked off a few points of interest on our handy tourist map to occupy our day. Tired flower girl The Museum of Jade was just around the corner from our new hotel, Posada Paraiso, so after checking in, we visited the museum and gift shop. The exhibit was small but quite interesting, culminating in a replica of King Pakal’s tomb complete with his mysterious Jade mask. The kids thought this was "super chido!". I honestly was not aware that photography was prohibited in the museum until I saw the sign on our way out. My bad. Enjoy the ill-gotten pictures. A fine replica of the Jade mask of King PakalReplicated Tomb of Pakal Our next stop was the Museum of Amber located in La Merced, an ...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 5 - Misol Ha
2010-04-13 17:32:00 After another fine breakfast in the jungle restaurant of Don Mucho, we packed up and started off on the long drive south to San Cristobal. Having already experienced a portion of what this road would bring us, no one was particularly looking forward to this leg of the journey. Knowing that we would also have to backtrack along this route on our way north to Campeche made it even worse. We cursed every tope, road block and switchback along the way. We made our scheduled stop to see the falls at Misol Ha and, as this was not a planned swimming opportunity, it was a bit of a “Griswolds Visit the Grand Canyon” experience. I don’t think the kids were too disappointed, their lips just now returning to the proper shade of pink after our afternoon in the old waters of Aguas Azules. The site is beautiful and so easy to get to from Palenque. It has the feel of a state park with all the accompanying facilities and far fewer vendors to contend with. If you are travelling in th...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 4 - Aguas Azules
2010-04-13 04:22:00 In an effort to not wear everyone out, we kept Day 4 of our itinerary was fairly low key. After a late breakfast across the street at Don Mucho, we reserved our luxury accommodations for one more night and then drove 60 kilometers south to the waterfalls of Aguas Azules.Breakfast at Don Mucho Cool fountain in the jungle that allegedly purifies the water as it circulates. Must do more research on this one....jThe road twisted and turned through tiny villages set into the sides of the mountains, reminding us very much of the area around Xela in Guatemala. At various points along the way, the townspeople set up makeshift roadblocks across the narrow road, some in an effort to slow down the tourists and tempt them with bananas, corn and tamales for sale. Others pulled up ropes across the way to extort money out of the drivers before allowing them to pass. We found that moving ahead, slowly but surely, would force them to eventually drop the rope and allow us to pass. Many times, those h...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 3 The Ruins at Palenque
2010-04-03 17:20:00 We awoke on day 3 of our adventure in Palenque on the edge of the biosphere. My plan had been to celebrate Cole’s 7th birthday with a fun trip to Aguas Azules and the magnificent waterfalls at Misol Ha. The weather cloudy, rainy and a chilly 54 degrees dictated otherwise. We had a great breakfast at Don Mucho and then headed off to see the famed archeological site. The birthday boy! Our cabanaBrrrrrrr.Although we were not starting off until later morning, the cool temperatures and cloud cover kept us comfortable throughout the day. We parked our car in the lower lot by the exit and easily found (or rather were found by) a guide, Edgar, happy to show us the ruins with a full commentary in English for $600 pesos, an acceptable amount based on my research. Our money turns out to have been well spent. Edgar, born and raised in Palenque knew these ruins like the back of his hand. As a child, this was his playground, the ruins and the dense jungle fueling his young imagination,...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 2 - Calakmul to Palenque
2010-04-02 17:40:00 Birdie and I rose early this morning, roused by the cacophony of the sounds coming from the jungle around us. After a failed attempt to connect to the internet, we joined the boys for a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit and omelets. Cole and friend Breakfast at Puerta CalakmulDespite my desire to find lodging as close to the ruin site as possible, our hotel was still a good hour and a half from the archeological zone. We twisted and turned our way south, stopping only to snap a few photos of the flora and fauna. Upon reaching the ruins we entered into a good sized parking area which was nearly empty and an attractive reception center, also empty. We were unpleasantly surprised to find no water available for sale, nor were there any printed maps or guides for hire. We made a good mental note of the site map at the entrance and carried on down the path and into the jungle. Having arrived in the morning, we were there at the right time to see dozens of spider monkeys swinging and...
Road Trip 2010 - Day 1 - Playa del Carmen to Calakmul
2010-04-01 19:14:00 Welcome to the Kinnon Family Road Trip 2010! Day 1 of our itinerary brought us from Playa del Carmen to Calakmul, a ruin site of great cultural significance in the Classic Period, located in the state of Campeche. We made great time moving south on 307, the same road that carried us to Belize in 2008 and then Guatemala in 2009. As expected, as every year, we noted more and more construction, particularly in Tulum and Bacalar. The turnoff toward Escarcega took us into new territory but through a countryside that remained familiar. The well kept, wide two lane highway stretched out long and straight, through acres and acres of small farms and sugarcane plantations. While this kind of ride bores my husband to tears, I enjoy trying to make out what crops are being cultivated by the campesinos and what also seems to grow wild in the fields along the road. No video games. No DVDs. Just books and a lot of imagination. The ruins at Rio BecThis is an area far more dependent on agricultur...

2010 Audi S4: Perfect car for a road trip
2010-01-10 00:43:00 I had to head out of town unexpectedly this weekend, and, of course, a band of snow was standing between me and my destination. All I have to say is: I couldn't have been driving a better car to deal with the situation. The drive from Chicago to Toledo is typically a 4 hour trip with all the speed limits being followed and zero stops. My sister and I made it in 3-1/2 hours. Through a snow storm. And that's not to say I was speeding or driving recklessly. But, it does say that I was able to speed a little in clear whether (nothing more than 80 mph in a 70 mph zone -- sheesh). And, it also says that I...
Surviving your Thanksgiving road trip
2009-11-24 06:00:00 "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Mom, ARE WE THERE YET?" seems to be the kids' theme song on long car rides. AAA estimates that 38.4 million Americans will be driving at least 50 miles from home for the Thanksgiving weekend. If you are one of those people, you'll want to plan ahead to keep your children entertained. Keeping our kids entertained with movies and music in the carA spokesperson for AAA says more cars will be on the roads because of the economy, new airline restrictions and additional baggage fees. Our last family road trip was quite an adventure, with four kids under the age of 5 we brought plenty of things to keep them occupied and I was able to...
Wolves Close Circus Road Trip With Defeat.
2009-11-21 20:59:00 Last night the Rockford Icehogs beat the Chicago Wolves 1-0. It was a night where both goalies shone Rockford's Joe Fallon registering 26 saves and Chicago's Drew MacIntyre with 42. It seemed a shame to see MacIntyre go home with a loss credited to him after such a great display of skill. The second notable personnel factor also concerned Wolves defense. Boris Valabik returned to the Wolves line up for a conditioning assignment. He seemed to be skating tentatively for the first period however, his confidence seem to return as the game progressed. Valabik was secure enough in his stance that he engaged in a bit of a dance with Rockford's Kyle Greentree during the third period. Here are some images...

Giants Go Winless on Road-Trip
2009-04-18 00:48:00 The first road trip of the 2009 season couldn't have gone much worse for the Giants. They got swept in San Diego by a surprising Padres squad that is playing way better than they were expected too. Then they traveled an hour north to LA for three and things didn't get any better. The defense and starting pitching were both horrendous throughout the trip. Barry Zito threw better than his line showed in Thursday's finale at Dodger Stadium, but once again, defensive blunders put the Giants in an early deficit, and the offense couldn't make up for it. And it was another misplay by Fred Lewis in left-field that did Zito in. Lewis had a terrible road trip defensively, misplaying various fly-balls and costing the Giants numerous runs. Those mistakes rest solely on Fred Lewis. Now, I'm not saying Lewis was the reason the Giants lost the games, because that's not entirely the case. In order to win ballgames, you need to score runs, and the Giants really struggled to do that on the trip....
Road trip to Belgium - Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium
2009-04-04 15:26:00 Jump to the full entry & travel map Brugge, West Flanders, BelgiumVisiting Belgium has been on our list of things to do since we arrived in France. I did a little research on the best things to see, do, and eat and Kyle rented a car. Here's what went down: We left the rainy, foggy valley of the Seine and literally took the highway toward the direction of sunshine. Cruising North toward Etretat (France), we had the darkest of clouds over our shoulders and sun in our eyes. After about an hour or so we arrived at the beach front town of Etretat. A slow-paced town nudged between sun-bleached cliffs and arches that extend into the sea. The beach is made up of the most eye catching, smooth, sun baked pebbles. I pocketed a handful of my very favorite. We listened as the waves were sucked back to the ocean, a low whistle as the water rushed past the rattling stones. Back on the road headed to Belgium, we passed by acres of lush farmland. The fie...

Canadian Road Trip
2009-01-09 15:39:00 Let?s say that you are taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Where would you go in each of these cities? The reason for this post is because I am taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. What a coincidence! I attended a wedding in Montreal almost 10 years ago, but don?t remember much about the city besides taking a river cruise and visiting the William Shatner Center at McGill University. I?ve never been to Ottawa, and figure that since I?m there, maybe I can be Prime Minister for the day. Toronto is one of my favorite places, and I plan on visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame on this trip since I?ve never been there before. I?m heading to these cities as part of my third annual hockey road trip and will be attending NHL games in each place. Besides the hockey games, I?m looking for suggestions of things to do. Therefore, please feel free to add any suggestions about things to do and see in the comments section be...

Road Trip to Vancouver
2008-08-21 14:42:00 Desperately needing a break after a long and stressful period dealing with estate matters, we packed up the (new to us) van and drove out to Vancouver, via overnight stops in Jasper and the Sun Peaks Resort near Valemont. Jasper was pleasant, the dining at Sun Peaks even better, though Mary's on-going tooth ache somewhat detracted from the experience for her. We took the driving in easy stages, stopping for a couple of hours at the lake in Hope (photos above and below) and a couple of other scenic views to make the trip seem more like part of our holidays rather than just a way of getting to Vancouver. This display at the tourist info center in Valemount (below) suggests to me that beavers can be terribly indecisive....

She beautifully captures the story of her grandmother?s trip to California from Iowa in 1924.Eight young women loaded their belongings into two Model T cars and headed to California. Wilke tries to answer the question why did these girls do this? How did they find the courage and convince their parents to let them go? Even though Wilke worked from living testimonies of some of the women who made the journey, read their journals and letters back home, this adventure had many gaps and conflicting accounts. Wilke supplements the story with her own childhood memories of spending the summers in Iowa with her grandmother. These added stories really make her grandmother come alive to the reader. This is a fun, relatively short tale of a cross country adventure before there wer...
