Building An "Iron Man" Pt. II: Jet-powered, Winged Flight
2008-05-24 16:35:00
"It's just my job five days a week, A rocket man, a rocket man"; New technology brings superstrength, can more new technology bring exoskeleton based flight to complete the "Iron Man"?The summer's hottest blockbuster is the superhero flick "Iron Man" which stars Robert Downey Jr. as weapons designer turned superhero Tony Stark. In part one of this two part series, we looked at the advances made in building exoskeletons, particularly Sarcos Inc.'s new Sarcos suit which can lift over 500 lbs, is maneuverable enough to handle stairs, and can run 30 minutes untethered.Having a super-powered suit is great, but aside from his power, the comic book character "Iron Man" had two other key attributes -- speed and flight. Without it, Iron Man would go from a superhero, to just plain super slow.Fortunately there are some promising technologies to give the exoskeleton fighting suit of the future super speed and flight. This article, the second part of this two part series, seeks to examine...
Building An "Iron Man" Pt. I: Military Grade Exoskeleton
2008-05-24 16:29:00
Real life technologies mimics the comic books with breakthroughs in human exoskeletons. The summer's hottest blockbuster thus far has been Iron Man -- not even the runaway hit Grand Theft Auto IV could slow it down. The movie centers around a super hero using a high tech suit to perform heroic feats no ordinary man could. What's intriguing is just how close real life technology is to creating a slightly less insanely overpowered "Iron Man" suit.In the first entry of a two part series, this article examines the developments in exoskeleton technology from an enterprising startup recently acquired by a major defense contractor. The exoskeleton starts with a simple concept -- while large war machines like tanks and armored personnel carriers (APCs) are mighty weapons, they lack the maneuverability of ground soldiers and provide a large target. However, ground soldiers lack the strength to carry sufficient stopping power to take on heavy vehicles.Sarcos Inc. has taken this concept a...

Robotic Exoskeletons
2008-05-16 19:09:00
From CNN comes news of a robotic exoskeleton being developed for the military. This isn't the first time I've seen reports about the military's plans for this sort of thing, but it is the first time I've seen an advanced demonstration and up-to-date information. Technology like this could go a long way toward keeping our soldiers alive in dangerous situations, but it could also do more. Imagine if a group of a hundred or a thousand relief workers equipped with this technology could be deployed following a major disaster, such as the recent earthquake in China. Combing through the rubble in a powered exoskeleton would be much faster, and could save a large number of lives by getting to trapped people sooner.
Are Humans Safe with Robotic Coworkers?

Robotic sailboats and accelerating change
2008-05-14 04:27:00
The Microtransit Challenge. This is a testament to Moore's law. Ten years ago this was 100% science fiction.  Five years ago someone could talk about it.  2006 they held it on a lake. This year its across the Atlantic. ...and it's at hobby prices. One of the entrants, the Pinta, cost the competitors 2,500.  Umm...you could build it in your garage if you had the programming chops. Big deal you say, it's just a glorified model sailboat.  Well yes and no.  Yes they look like simple little sailboats but they've got: Solar power, automated sensors, GPS positioning and course navigation software.  They obviously have a much simpler algorithm than the DARPA Grand Challenge cars, but still need to get from point A to point B. Also this technology will be a boon to climate science.  At 2,500 a pop you can make hundreds and send them out into the oceans and go anywhere and report back anything you can imagine.  A mobile science buoy....

Artificial mouth could be robotic taste-tester
2008-05-07 03:44:00
An artificial mouth was recently developed that has the ability to chew food similar to a human, making it a good robotic taste-tester to better understand flavor. When food is chewed, it releases compounds which affect taste. Using speed motors, mechanical teeth, and a pipe pumping "enzyme-containing artificial saliva", the mouth-bot is an almost-living, breathing (via helium, anyway) mastication machine.
Robotic Wildlife Aid Study of Real-Life Critters
2008-05-06 13:40:00
Tech News World has a great story on how scientists are now using robo-animals to further their studies into certain species. One gray squirrel, its bushy tail twitching, barked a warning as another scrounged for food nearby. It was an ordinary spring day at Hampshire College, except that the rodent issuing the warning was powered by amps, not acorns. Dubbed "Rocky" after the cartoon character, the robo-squirrel is working its way into Hampshire's live-squirrel clique, controlled by researchers several yards away with a laptop computer and binoculars. Sarah Partan, an assistant professor in animal behavior at Hampshire, hopes that by capturing a close-up view of squirrels in nature, Rocky will help her team decode squirrels' communication techniques, social cues and survival instincts. Basic Models Rocky is among many robotic critters worldwide helping researchers observe animals in their natural environments rather than in labs. The research could let scientists better understa...

ROBOTIC SQUIRREL USED TO STUDY REAL-LIFE SQUIRREL BEHAVIOR, STEAL NUTS
2008-05-03 15:56:00
Filed under: Robots Most of the squirrels our college campus were massive, hyper-intelligent little beasts that were best dealt with by vigilant avoidance, but it looks like Hampshire College professor Sarah Partan is taking the opposite approach, using a robotic squirrel named "Rocky" to interact with the local rodents up close. Rocky is controlled wirelessly from a laptop, and can realistically move his tail and body to communicate with other squirrels, as well as play pre-recorded squirrel noises from built-in speakers. The goal is to study how animals communicate, and it looks like Rocky's doing a good job -- the local squirrels seem to respond to him just like any other. That's pretty impressive for a bot (or pretty weak for the squirrels, depending on your point of view), but we're just waiting for Partan and her team to discover the shocking truth: that the squirrels are really studying them.Read | Perm-alink | Email this | Comments-

Robotic Bicycle Valet Parking (In 23 Seconds)
2008-04-25 06:27:00
I went to Amsterdam once and nearly got run over by a bicycle every 3 steps I took. Those crazy Dutch love their bikes but I thought it was strange and not very safe the way they parked them on the side of the canals. Anyone can steal the bike, push it into the canal or mess with it in numerous other ways. I guess they figure the punks are too high to leave the coffee shop and mess with a bike. I don?t know if they ride as much in Japan as they do in Amsterdam but they came up with a much better system for parking a bike.

Engineering Prof Builds Brains for Robotic Cars
2008-04-13 11:06:00
Jonathan Sprinkle wants to build robotic vehicles that pass the Turing Test. The test, proposed by Alan Turing in a 1950 paper, “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” requires a robot’s behavior to be so lifelike that an observer can't tell if he’s dealing with a robot or a person. Sprinkle, an assistant professor at The University of Arizona, and professor J. Mikael Eklund, of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, have already passed the Turing Test with a control system they designed for a T-33 jet trainer. A veteran F-15 pilot who flew against the T-33 in a test at Edwards Air Force Base said it looked like a recent flight school graduate was at the controls. Following his success with flight-based systems, Sprinkle has placed his robotic control expertise firmly on the ground, where he’s applying it to smart cars that drive themselves. This research effort began with a DARPA Urban Challenge project Sprinkle worked on at the University of California, Berk...
