2008-02-03 13:30:00 Sandy Nelson was the biggest ? and one of the few ? star drummers in the late 1950s and early 1960s era in which instrumental rock was at its peak. He landed two Top Ten hits, "Teen Beat" (1959) and "Let There Be Drums" (1961), which surrounded his Gene Krupa-inspired solos with cool, mean guitar licks that were forerunners of the surf sound. Nelson had only one other Top Forty hit, "Drums Are My Beat" (1962). He ground out a quick series of instrumental albums in the early 1960s ? eight within 18 months, as a matter of fact ? with several other top Hollywood rock and pop session musicians. Nelson was not that great a drummer, although he was good. 2007-03-19 23:42:00 Rockabilly is an up tempo hillbilly music with a strengthened rhythm that is partially derived from R&B, jumping guitar solos that owed a lot to R&B and the country boogieman, and a lot of slap-back echo on hot-potato-in-the-mouth vocals. Some people have mistaken rockabilly as Rock n Roll, even though I don’t defy that most of their songs are co-related, and arrived from the same roots. Rockabilly has a much stronger rhythm than most country music and the heavy off-beat was usually emphasised by the drums. Back then, drums were virtually unknown in country music and were actually prohibited on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Drums were used by Black-American’s music since they first came to America. During the 50’s drums were very important part of urban blues, driving the small jump band, and clattering drummer became part of the Chicago blues scene. 2006-12-20 20:23:02 Wanda Jackson - Queen of Rockabilly -The Very Best of The R'n'R Years Wanda Lavonne Jackson was born in 1937 in Maud, Oklahoma, a small town about fifty miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Her father played piano in bar bands and worked whatever odd jobs he could find, which weren't many in the Dust Bowl during the Depression. So in 1941 he loaded up the family and headed for California and a better way of life. The family settled in Bakersfield. Wanda first learned to sing in a church gospel choir. She learned to play the guitar after her father bought her one in 1943. Wanda practiced incessantly. As her mother later said, "Wanda wasn't like other children after the guitar came into her life." The Jackson family moved back to Oklahoma City in 1949 when Wanda was 12-years-old. While attending high school, Wanda won a talent show at a local radio station.
