Rocket DIY ? How to Make a Water Rocket!
2009-11-16 21:07:00
Rather than polluting our mother earth with traditional hobby rocket fuel, here’s a great way to experiment and learn about rockets by building water rockets where the fuel is solely based on pressurized air pushing out water.  (Of course, don’t forget water can also cut through heavy metal too.) This instructable with show you how to ...

Video: Water Ice Plus Aluminum Equals Rocket Fuel. Huh?
2009-09-23 04:42:00
(Hat Tip: Hobby Space) When it comes to space travel, choosing the right fuel could mean life or death for those watching the rocket blast off into glory. While the hydrogen/oxygen mix has been popular with governments and corporations alike, scientists from Purdue and Pennsylvania State are trying to come up with safer alternatives such as aluminum ...
The Rocket ride of Ike Davis
2009-09-17 18:08:00
It seems like everywhere you turn in the Metsblogosphere Ike Davis is being mentioned, now those accolades have even begun to suggest that the young first baseman could end up in Queens next year. After years of watching Omar over inflate prospects and rush them to the majors, only to have them flop, I'm leery of anyone being placed on an accelerated path with him in charge. I've asked this several times, since Omar took over and began this accelerated program that is suppose to push prospects to meet their potential what has it produced. In five years, Mike Pelfrey advanced faster then any other pitcher from his draft and now he can't decide whether to balk or throw the ball into the ground half the time ( of course that's an exaggeration ).Any other player on this team from the farm you could say the same thing about, they need more seasoning. Now; Nick Evans, Josh Thole, Tobi Stoner and Lance Broadway you could say were a result of injuries but guys like Dan Murphy, Fernando ...

Last week, Alliant Techsystems (ATK) test-fired a five-segment, solid-fueled rocket in the Utah desert. During the two-minute demonstration, the 154-ft. long booster produced 22 million horsepower, generated 3.6 million pounds of thrust, and consumed 1.4 million pounds of solid propellant. "Our

Home sellers, it's safe to come out; sales rocket higher
2009-07-28 02:18:00
The Census Bureau reports that new home sales rose 11 percent in June over July. The good news is that new home sales in the Midwest rose 43.1 percent. That's not a typo; here's the bureau's statement:Sales of new one-family houses in June 2009 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 384,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 11.0 percent (±13.2%)* above the revised May rate of 346,000, but is 21.3 percent (±11.4%) below the June 2008 estimate of488,000.The median sales price of new houses sold in June 2009 was $206,200; the average sales price was $276,900. The seasonally adjusted estimate of new houses...

Rocket Science Field Test- Day #1
2009-07-02 05:14:00
I wish I was making this up, but I have been known to wear my wet suit in the pool.  I hate cold water, hate it, hate it, hate it! So as I headed to Chicago Endurance Sports open water swim clinic, this afternoon, I was not in a good mood.  Today ( Wednesday) was a dark, cold, rainy day and the last thing I wanted to do was get into Lake Michigan.  The clinic is great, and there will be more about CES and their coaches later in the month, this is about me.My experience with wet suits to this point is they do keep you warmer than not having one on, but when it's cold, you are S.O.L.  ...

Where's the Rocket?
2009-03-17 20:07:00
Over the years, the internet has helped me find the names of movies, magicians who cut of their legs with a chainsaw to the tune of The Peter Gunn Theme, even the identity of Donald Duck's mother. And yet, one challenge, finding a cartoon about anthropomorphic fireworks has remained unmet. That is, until now. Yes, I was looking back over the weekend and realized after over three years, I still had not found any evidence of this thing ever existing. So I tried again, I even made the rounds of movie forums hoping someone would have known what I was referring to. Only this time, I tried to remember a bit more. "Fireworks" and "firecrackers" weren't getting me anywhere. What else could you call them? Then I tried "rocket." And the greatest thing happened. I found this. An animated short called The Remarkable Rocket (1975), narrated by David Niven. Based on a short story by Oscar Wilde. I had a few details mixed up. It turns out it's not about the little runt that everyone else mak...

Pet Bottle Rocket
2009-02-08 03:21:00
With a couple of Pet-bottles, a (bike-)pump, tape, cardboard and some tools (and water) it is possible to construct your very own Pet Bottle Water Rocket. According to Wikipedia, this is how it works: 1) Compressed air is added to the fuselage which creates a bubble which floats up through the water and then pressurizes the air volume in the top of the bottle. 2) The bottle is released from the pump. 3) The water is pushed out the nozzle by the compressed air. 4) The bottle moves away from the water because it follows Newton's Third Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In 2007 the current altitude record for water rockets was set in the USA: 630m. But be care full, a water rocket is the real deal, that means that Newton works in other ways as well. The bottle can burst and what goes up, must come down. Pet Bottle Rocket (since ....) Energy and Endurance - Rocket Fuel for Effective Leadership
2008-06-07 22:16:00
Mark Salter, John McCain’s alter ego, co-author, campaign advisor and personal confidant, is a former college roommate. If John McCain should win the presidential election, most political observers agree that Mark will occupy a significant post in his administration. I recently found myself reminiscing on how far he’s progressed in his career. Being a student of talent identification, I locked into thinking about those personal attributes that he displayed 28 years ago that may have contributed to his success in politics and publishing. While a wide assortment of behavioral traits are surely at play, including his first-rate intellectual and communication abilities, he was known to many as a person with a bottomless reservoir of energy and endurance. Mark was clearly driven, and pursued personal goals with unbridled zeal and a single-minded focus. A sure signpost for his energy and endurance levels was a rare ability to function on five to six hours of sleep for extended...

Rocket Powered Pesto
2008-06-02 11:40:00
There are two minor problems facing those who grow their own. The first is the issue that presents itself when faced with a glut. A failure to plan correctly can often leave the hapless gardener with a plethora of peas or a surfeit of strawberries which must then be eaten with every meal resulting in palate fatigue or preserved in some way. This is where pickling, freezing, jamming, smoking, salting and the like come in to their own and allow us to enjoy the fruits (or vegetables, for that matter) of our labour during the months when they are out of season. The second problem that we are discovering is how to look after ones plants whilst you are away for any length of time. After the many hours of care lavished upon them during their short existence, the prospect of returning from holiday to find a parched vegetable garden with the dried and rotting remains of what once were lush, green plants is somewhat depressing. I know that there are intricate irrigation systems involving time...
Continental jet has near miss with ‘rocket’
2008-06-01 21:38:00
Jet pilots aren’t used to sharing their airspace, so you can bet a rocket will get some attention. Continental Flight 1544 was flying at 5,000 feet about 11 miles east of Bush Intercontinental Airport after takeoff Monday morning when the pilot called the tower to report an object headed toward the plane. The pilot described seeing a fast moving object with a thick smoke trail nearing his airspace. The FAA now says it thinks that object was some kind of model rocket. Both the FAA and the Houston Area Joint Terrorism Task Force continue to investigate the incident that KHOU.com first reported early this afternoon.
