Nicole, Gawain and I got to head up to Rocky Mountain National Park a few days ago to shoot an engagement session that was totally fun. These two rock! We wandered around Lumpy Ridge for a while and found some of the most beautiful aspen groves, and then we headed up into the Alluvial Fan area of the park for some more engagement photos. I’m so excited to photograph their wedding in August — it’ll be at an amazing overlook in Colorado National Monument, which is one of my most favorite places in Colorado. Awesome!

I was waiting to do a post until I got my photos uploaded, then I just now realized that Commandant Genius (that's me) either forgot to pack his digital camera USB cord or packed it so well that it can't be found.So, I'm back in the homeland. I had a dawn flight yesterday, which rendered me more or less useless for my first 20 hours here. When I was a kid, the PPA family was split regarding vacation departures: my Dad and I went for the wake up at some ungodly hour, depart before dawn choice, while my Mom and siblings preferred to sleep in. After getting up at 4:45 am yesterday, I think I've finally defected and left Dad as the only pro-early family member. But, now, I'm refreshed and awake. I timed it pretty well (if there's tornadoes tomorrow, this may be rescinded) -- the weather's amazing and this life without stress is not bad. I spent a couple hours on the parents' patio yesterday, drinking Fat Tire and reading Pynchon, staring at the clouds and feeling pretty good. Th...

Had a great time this past weekend with Jen and John, who came all the way out from the Michigan to elope Colorado style. That means wedding gown + suit + hiking boots. Jen and John just wanted to wander the Estes Valley and Rocky Mountain National Park until they found a place that inspired them — so they really had no idea where or when they were going to get married when we started the afternoon. Just finished up with Amy and TJ’s awesome wedding, which took place all over Estes Park — from Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park all the way to Lilly Lake to the Taharaa Lodge. Amy was super psyched to get cool mountain scenery in the background, so I had a lot of fun going to some of the most picturesque areas in my hometown. Fun stuff! I noticed during their wedding that they had an album on their welcoming table that was filled with images of them all over the world. Well, not images of them really, but images they’d taken of their feet. In sand dunes, on beaches, in jungles, etc. etc. Hawaii, Asia, throughout the Rockies, etc. So I figured, hey, I have to get a picture of them taking pictures of their feet at their wedding. Right? I mean, why not? So I took some shots of them taking pictures of their feet, and then I also took pictures of their feet (see below). Congrats, Amy and TJ! It was an honor to be a part of your wedding day!

I wanted to post a few pics of Paul and Kelly’s wedding, which I shot recently in Rocky Mountain National Park outside my hometown of Estes Park. They had a pretty mellow ceremony and they picked a sweet location in the Alluvial Fan area near Endo Valley. The waterfall behind them was loud, so they rented a small battery-powered PA and put it behind a tiny pine tree. It worked really well. All the guests found seats on the rocks in a small natural amphitheater and listened to one of the most genuine ceremonies I’ve ever heard. It was way cool. Their ring bearer was their beloved dog Spanky, who came up with the rings attached to a carabiner on its collar. Spanky also signed a paw print on the marriage license witness line, which is legal in Colorado. How cool is that?

I’ve been neglecting my blog lately! Bad bad bad. But today I decided to update things with a short post. I’m in California right now preparing for a week of photo shoots. 14 corporate head shots, 3 magazine assignments and two weddings. Whoah! I flew in the evening of July 4th, so I managed to see fireworks shows from the airplane from Denver all the way to California. The coolest was flying into San Luis Obispo, where I got to see the fireworks exploding above the thick marine layer that had formed over the ocean. It was amazing watching these bursts illuminate the fog below. Aaaanyway, a few days ago I shot Allison and Ben’s engagement session. We cruised in and out of Rocky Mountain National Park, and along the scenic Highway 7 with their two pups. Came away with some cool stuff. Congrats, you two! I look forward to the wedding!
