The Clintons: Todd Purdham and a rocky campaign
2008-06-03 22:05:00 Vanity Fair writer, Todd Purdham, has been widely criticized for his article The Comeback Id that paints an unflattering portrait of Bill Clinton. Chief among the outraged is Bill Clinton himself who recently described Purdham as "sleazy," "dishonest," "slimy," and "a scumbag."To characterize Bill Clinton's response as an overreaction is putting it mildly. It comes across as an example of "protesting too much" - especially since Clinton claims he hasn't even read the article. His main complaint is that the article includes "lies" (which Clinton doesn't identify), that it fails to cite sources and includes anonymous quotes. Well, surprise surprise. Why would any associates of Clinton voluntarily offer up their name for publication, when they know there could be consequences.Whether or not Purdham should have gone to print without named sources is another issue. But this isn't or shouldn't be a purely partisan issue, because enough questions have been raised in the course of the c...

Engagement photos in Rocky Mountain National Park
2008-06-03 16:24:00 Nicole, Gawain and I got to head up to Rocky Mountain National Park a few days ago to shoot an engagement session that was totally fun. These two rock! We wandered around Lumpy Ridge for a while and found some of the most beautiful aspen groves, and then we headed up into the Alluvial Fan area of the park for some more engagement photos. I’m so excited to photograph their wedding in August — it’ll be at an amazing overlook in Colorado National Monument, which is one of my most favorite places in Colorado. Awesome!
Small, Rocky Worlds
2008-06-02 18:03:00 Paul Gilster over at Centauri Dreams has written a post about the prevalance of small, rocky worlds in our galaxy. He reports on 45 new planet reports revealed at the International Astronomical Union's meeting in Boston which have yet to be confirmed, one of which includes a planet projected to have roughly four times the mass of Earth. If confirmed, that would be the smallest exo-planet found yet. Even if not confirmed with exactly those specifications, these findings provide more information about the universe around us. The planets were found using the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla 3.6m telescope. And if you read the post at Paul's site, you should also pay attention to the comments. Several of them are highly insightful.
June 2nd Holidays - Get on the Rocky Road and Shape up in Men?s or Women?s
2008-06-02 06:00:00 National Rocky Road Day - My first instinct was to write something predictable about ice cream or cookie flavors. But, I’m gonna steer away from those super calorific treats! I encourage everyone to literally hit the rocky roads - and I don’t mean pushing the incline button on a sleek treadmill at the health club. ...

Rocky Mountain High
2008-05-31 20:09:00 I was waiting to do a post until I got my photos uploaded, then I just now realized that Commandant Genius (that's me) either forgot to pack his digital camera USB cord or packed it so well that it can't be found. So, I'm back in the homeland. I had a dawn flight yesterday, which rendered me more or less useless for my first 20 hours here. When I was a kid, the PPA family was split regarding vacation departures: my Dad and I went for the wake up at some ungodly hour, depart before dawn choice, while my Mom and siblings preferred to sleep in. After getting up at 4:45 am yesterday, I think I've finally defected and left Dad as the only pro-early family member. But, now, I'm refreshed and awake. I timed it pretty well (if there's tornadoes tomorrow, this may be rescinded) -- the weather's amazing and this life without stress is not bad. I spent a couple hours on the parents' patio yesterday, drinking Fat Tire and reading Pynchon, staring at the clouds and feeling pretty good. Th...

He has directed three feature films and series television. He recently produced Racing For Time for Lifetime. Rocky Lang is also a co-author of Confessions of Emergency Room Doctors and Lara Takes Charge. This May, Mr. Lang will be honored as Father of The Year by the American Diabetes Association for his books for children and his diabetes advocacy. Guest Blogger Rocky Lang-- It was six and a half years ago when my ex-wife called me from a summer trip with our daughters Nikki and Erica. She told me that Nikki, who was ten at the time, was rushed to the hospital and had been diagnosed with type-one diabetes. My ex is a doctor, calm and cool, but I heard panic in her voice. She insisted I get on a plane immediately and indicated Nikki’s blood sugars were so high that her life was...

The Best Scion tC Body Kits By Rocky Jones
2008-05-21 11:07:00 Scion tC's are an excellent car, they get good gas mileage, perform very well, and look great. But there is one thing that definitely makes them stand out from other cars, Scion tC Body Kits. There is a large selection of Body Kits to choose from when it comes to a Scion tC, I'm going to let you in on some of the best choices.Lets start with the Kaminari Urethane Body Kit. This is, of course, made my Kaminari. The material is Polyurethane, which is a strong adhesive. If you were to install one of these yourselves, the difficulty is average, but a little more than easy. This body kit is recommended because of it's outstanding quality as well as the excellent price. It comes with a front bumper, rear bumper, right and left sideskirts. When you order one of these, they are built to order, meaning that they will make this product when you order. One down, quite a few more Scion tC Body Kits to go. The next one is the Fab Body Kit. This body kit is very affordable, and is made in high ...

The Hills Are... Rugged and Kind of Rocky
2008-05-19 20:45:00 Coming back from Florence, Remi and I drove due north, through Bologna and on through the Alps. Took in the mile after mile of breathtaking snow-capped mountains that engulfed us--and it set me to thinking that the bit about the Von Trapps ambling over the Alps in their Sunday best was a less than likely scenario.
Finally Friday - but Sicky Rocky
2008-05-16 19:20:00 Phew, busy week! Now I'm resting up on my Rocky rocker for an even busier weekend ...Actually, I'm not feeling so good. I've been sneezing and moping around and my mom is threatening to take me to the v.e.t. if I don't perk up. So I'm hoping all my friends will purr for me so I don't even have to think about ::shudder:: riding in the car and being poked by the v.e.t.! Good thing I've already had my carnival barker suit fitting and have all my plans in place for this Sunday's Carnival of the Cats ....Don't forget to submit your Carnival post here! Also, Miss Lenda Paw and I would like to remind you that you only have this weekend to buy your tickets for the six wonderful signs being raffled at Cat Friends Helping Friends. For as little as $5 you can decorate your house with them, or save them to give as really unique gifts! And you'll be helping to raise funds for kitties' vet bills ... ... ::Atchooo! Rocky Attends a Business Meeting
2008-05-13 16:03:00 I've chronicled the life and times of my friend Rocky in this blog, up until now focusing on his encounters with and philosophizing about women (see Rocky Takes Manhattan and Rocky Takes Manhattan - Part II). But you should know that Rocky's life and interests are much broader in scope, and to prove my point, here is Rocky's latest adventure which demonstrates both his intellect and sophistication in business matters. Rocky's job (yes, he is employed) occasionally involves negotiating contracts, something which Rocky finds very boring and frustrating. As you may have guessed from my prior two Rocky posts, he is not the most patient guy in the world. This character flaw showed itself one late afternoon in a NYC attorney's office where he was trying to finish up an agreement which he felt should have been wrapped up in under an hour but instead was coming up to 3...

Rocky Timed Out
2008-05-10 00:37:00 by Jayne Lyn Stahl The chickens of Rocky past are coming home to roost today as 1972 presidential Democratic nominee, George McGovern, defected from the Clinton camp to endorse Obama which is further proof that any analogies between Rocky Balboa and Hillary Clinton are strained. McGovern joins a chorus of those who think Clinton should walk away. But, echoing the Bush mindset, Hillary ignores those who suggest that she do now what she must inevitably do. She has just lent her campaign another $6 milllion to stay in the race which makes $11 million out of her own pocket, but who's counting? After all, it's her business how she spends her money. The only thing that should concern us is that her decision may well come at the expense of her party's victory in November. After watching the obsessive Democratic political contest that has plagued the airwaves for months, the only thing that is clear is that politics has become the drug of choice in Washington. What keeps ...

Rocky Roads
2008-04-30 00:06:00 This interesting tidbit from Rotoworld...Troy Tulowitzki left Tuesday's game in the first inning with an apparent leg injury. Tulo injured either his quad or groin. He wasn't even supposed to start tonight, but Jeff Baker was scratched before the game, causing him to be inserted at short and Clint Barmes to be moved to second. Now Barmes is at shortstop, Garrett Atkins is at second and Chris Iannetta is playing third. The Rockies must be feeling pretty foolish that they didn't replace Jayson Nix on the roster with Omar Quintanilla.Doesn't sound like the exact infield formation that in 2007 had the highest fielding percentage in baseball.

Rocky Takes Manhattan - Part II
2008-04-29 18:24:00 Last night, my friend Rocky, after leaving the hospital where he landed due to a broken wrist gotten from flirting with a redhead while crossing the street (see my full account of this incident here), explained to me his philosophy on communication between men and women: Men just want to give the right answer, they don't care what it is. So while their wife, girlfriend or woman that they just met at the bar is talking away, the guy is only listening enough to figure out the best bullshit response. And the guy doesn't care what it is he has to say - he'll say anything, whether he believes it or not, whether it's true or not, just to make his lady happy. Especially when the woman asks that minefield question, "How do you feel about it?" Faced with that question, a guy goes into internal panic. "Holy shit, she...

?Deal? is No Big Deal as Career of Burt Reynolds Fades Away
2008-04-24 07:22:00 CHICAGO ? Poor Burt Reynolds. As the No. 1 box-office star from 1978 to 1982, he revived his film career in 1997 with ?Boogie Nights?. Since then, he has had the long, slow decline of ?B? movies and bad remakes. Reynolds even tainted his own legacy by participating in the horrible 2005 redo of ?The Longest Yard?. Will he ever get the one last script that will return him to glory? The film ?Deal? isn?t it. Rocky Takes Manhattan
2008-04-23 21:52:00 Don't keep me from the millions of women out there balancing themselves on high heels! My friend Rocky is an irrepressible force here in NYC. Recently, he landed himself in the hospital from simultaneously attempting to cross the street, talk on his cell phone, and flirt with a woman walking towards him. He collided with another pedestrian, sending him spinning in a fashion which assuredly was not going to win the heart of the lady who was the source of his distraction. Gravity won & Rocky went sailing to the ground, fracturing his wrist in the process. In the hospital Rocky was a restless creature. He demanded to know when he could leave. A nurse explained that he'd have to wait, that they just wanted to be sure that he was stable. "Stable? Stable? Of course I'm stable, just look at me!" The nurse was far too polite to point...

Estes Park Elopment in Rocky Mountain National Park
2008-04-20 08:42:00 Had a great time this past weekend with Jen and John, who came all the way out from the Michigan to elope Colorado style. That means wedding gown + suit + hiking boots. Jen and John just wanted to wander the Estes Valley and Rocky Mountain National Park until they found a place that inspired them — so they really had no idea where or when they were going to get married when we started the afternoon. We began at Lumpy Ridge and then drove up into the main area of Rocky Mountain National Park, stopping at a few places before we finally arrived at the Alluvial Fan area near Endo Valley. I’ve photographed weddings at the Alluvial Fan before — it’s absolutely stunning, and even more so in the winter/spring. The colors on Saturday were so crisp and punchy, and there was a little flurry of snowflakes spinning around. They looked around, decided the Alluvial Fan was as good a place as any, and they got married. In Colorado, you’re allowed to marry yourselves...

Life in the Rocky Mountains
2008-04-09 09:29:00 Climbing the mountain had been on my mind for almost all my life, particularly ever since I did a course in Rock Repelling and trekked some softer mountains up in the North. But I have never climbed K 2 or Nanga Parbat -- icons of Pakistani climbing, as identifiable and as famous as the Mount Everest. I have been pretty close to them, at the distance that seemed nearly close enough to touch their summits. In different capacities, I had lived some of my life in the base camps of these majestic mountains and some others in Northern Pakistan; with mountaineers, explorers and adventurers from all over the world.Sitting in the base camps, I have seen determined, committed and sponsored climbers arrive at base camps; some less savvy teams taking a look around and going back. Some staying and waiting for the weather breaks that do not come; some even taking a start only to abort and some conquering the mighty mountains. Staying in base camps is important for climbers to give their bodies m...

Bret Carr, RevoLOUtion, indie movie director, producer and star: Mr. Media
2008-04-04 03:22:00 Bret Carr made a movie. Lots of people make movies these days. Every idiot with a digital camcorder thinks he is Scorsese, Tarantino, or Apatow, but Carr approached his first feature film, RevoLOUtion, a little differently. He landed Quinn Redeker, the man behind The Deer Hunter, to write his screenplay. Rocky composer Bill Conti created the title song. Paul Michael Glaser, best known as Detective Starsky from the classic TV series ?Starsky & Hutch,? is a producer. Carr even convinced Burt Young, who played Sylvester Stallone?s brother-in-law in the Rocky films, to be himself in RevoLOUtion. But who to play Lou Benedetti, the stuttering, somewhat brain-damaged, yet ultimately inspirational star of the film? That would be Carr himself, who also produced and directed RevoLOUtion. And wait until you hear about his unusual ideas about marketing.open separate window

Hillary: Outboxed
2008-04-02 16:50:00 The best way for Obama to prove he?s ready to stare down Ahmadinejad is by putting away someone even tougher." Maureen Dowd NYTA desperate Hillary conjurs herself as "Rocky" but I see her more like Susan Hayward in 1958's "I Want To Live." Susan is on death row for a murder she didn't commit - framed by "the real killer." Hillary is on death row framed by the Democratic party, Obama media orgasmites, and herself. Yes, Hillary's her own "real killer" destined to "Die Another Day."
