CIA Rogues & Clandestine Evildoing..

GEF @ 8:08 AM MST CIA Employees On Trial In Europe For Kidnapping Via: C&L And not a peep in the mainstream media, with the exception of this story at CQ Politics. Happy Birthday to us! S&R turns one year old today
2008-04-16 19:03:00
One year down. Several more to go, with luck. Scholars & Rogues launched one year ago today with two posts: one from Whythawk on unlearning helplessness and another from me on Joe Wilson’s firebreathing, bomb-lobbing nard-stomper at the Conference on World Affairs, where he called the Bush administration a pack of traitors and said Fred Thompson was “a member of the treason faction of the Republican Party.” A lot has happened since then. 1339 posts from our writing staff. 39 guest posts, a couple of which almost blowed up the Internets. 16 honorary Scrogues in the masthead, from Lord Byron to Babe Ruth. Thousands of comments, many of which were quite thoughtful. Thanks to some security issues, we closed up shop at Wordpress and moved to our own domain. We made it to Technorati 10K status in five months. After the move to our new domain we had to start over, and less than six months later we’ve nearly made it to the Top 10K again. We’ve been l...
We?re sorry - we blowed up the Internets
2008-04-02 21:04:00
Some of you may have noticed that S&R has been down for the last hour or so, and we apologize. The Hillary Clinton/Rocky Balboa post we put up earlier caught fire on Digg and wound up on the top page there, which meant we were seeing more hits in an hour than we do most days. Short version: this level of traffic overran our shared hosting set-up and the hosting company shut us off. We’re investigating solutions that will hope assure this doesn’t happen again, although the money involved may mean we have to consider taking advertising to offset the cost. When the ruckus dies down we’ll try to re-post the Hillary/Rocky item, but for the moment we have pulled it in order to be able to continue operation. Thanks for bearing with us.
Rogues, scandals and the Church of Baseball: S&R honors Babe Ruth
2008-03-31 19:30:00
Walt Whitman once said, “I see great things in baseball. It’s our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us.” You could look it up. - Annie Savoy I’ll promise to go easier on drinking and to get to bed earlier, but not for you, fifty thousand dollars, or two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars will I give up women. They’re too much fun. - Babe Ruth Today is Opening Day for America’s Pastime, and to mark the occasion S&R honors our newest Scrogue, George Herman Ruth. The Bambino. The Sultan of Swat. The Babe. What Ruth lacked as a scholar he more than made up for in roguishness, and his appointment to our masthead comes at a time when our game is facing its own set of troubles. The Mitchell Report is a desperately flawed effort, but BALCO, the Federal pursuit of Barry Bonds, admissions of cheating by Andy Pettite and others, the now-discredited denial of cheating by Rafael Palmeiro, the strange case of Mike McGw...
NYT on Obama: ?Can a liberal be a unifier?? Progressives: ?YES!?
2008-03-26 02:24:00
I’ve seen a lot of brain-crushingly stupid stuff coming out of the so-called “paper of record” in recent years, but this just takes the aneurysm-inducing cake: To achieve the change the country wants, he says, ?we need a leader who can finally move beyond the divisive politics of Washington and bring Democrats, independents and Republicans together to get things done.? But this promise leads, inevitably, to a question: Can such a majority be built and led by Mr. Obama, whose voting record was, by one ranking, the most liberal in the Senate last year? I love the fact that Robin Toner (or his/her editor) just threw in that “inevitably,” as if it’s just such a commonly accepted piece of wisdom that a liberal politician cannot possibly unify disparate points of view under their banner. It only gets better from there: Mr. Obama?s rise has been built in part on the idea that he represents a break from the established identities that have defined many o...

TH*NK*NG (ROGUES)
2008-01-28 08:33:00
by Fred Cederholm I’ve been thinking about rogues. Actually I’ve been thinking about auditors, defalcations/ frauds, Societe Generale, systems of internal control, and convenience. Most of the financial news stories of the prior week focused on the bloodbath that hit the world’s stock exchanges as the current Sub-Prime/ Alternative-A loan debacle continues to unwind. The US markets (closed on Monday for the observance of the Martin Luther King holiday) seemed to get a get a temporary pass from a week of otherwise global carnage. Was it the FED’s emergency rate cut of .75% and all the MEGA media hype surrounding proposals for some “major” $600 windfall for each US taxpayer (“maybe” materializing three to four months down the road) that spared only those exchanges in North America’s Eastern Standard Time Zone from the massive bloodletting? I don’t TH*NK so! You see as a forensic investigative accountant and auditor, I am fascinated by the unfolding drama in Paris, France involving...
?The Wire??the best show on television and a guide to American decline
2008-01-07 20:39:00
Last night saw the premiere of the final season of “The Wire,” HBO’s long-running drama that started out as a gritty look at the cat-and-mouse battle between overworked, underpaid cops and ruthless drug dealers in the decaying metropolis of Baltimore, Maryland, but quickly evolved into a scathing, unforgiving tour of the failure of all the institutions we take for granted. This ambitious vision is married to some of the most honest, raw, and real characters ever to grace a television screen, making “The Wire” not only the best show on television today, but one of the best examples of modern American thought and commentary we have. Each season of “The Wire” has focused on a different institution or system and demonstrated in gory detail how badly it is failing, wrecked by corruption, indolence, greed, and above all else, apathy. Season One explored the parallels between the drug trade and the police culture, both groups crippled by greedy l...
2007 in Review, pt. 1: Dem White Christmas Blues
2007-12-25 16:40:00
Welcome to S&R’s year in review. Over the next few days we’ll be taking a look back at the year past, the ridiculous and the sublime, the famous and infamous. We begin the series with a couple of carols that you and your family can sing by the fire today. Dreaming of a White Christmas in Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Virginia For Michael Vick (to the tune of “White Christmas”) I?m screaming at a white, pit bull Each time he backs away in fear It?s a thing I?m dreading ?Cause I?ll be betting My pride, money, and career I?m screaming at a white, pit bull It seems he doesn?t want to bite So I?ll hang, drown, or fry him, in sight Of the other dogs so that they?ll fight Walking in an Insider Trading Wonderland For Joe Nacchio (former CEO of Quest) (to the tune of ?Walking in a Winter Wonderland?) The new look
2007-12-12 15:09:00
As some of you have noticed, we’ve had a few technical problems. As best we can tell, the issues have been about one part bad CSS template to four parts Microsoft sucks. IE7 had a couple little issues and IE6 just gakked on the old design. Not that you really ought to still be using IE6, but we’re trying to accommodate as many folks as possible. It wasn’t all IE, though - Safari had a couple problems, as well. So we have now installed a new template that we hope fixes the issues we were seeing without creating any new ones. In all likelihood this is a temporary measure - tech master Brian Angliss (many thanks for all his hard work behind the scenes in the last couple of months, by the way) is probably going to start work at some point on a custom template that will serve us permanently. For now, enjoy the slightly new look, and if you have technical issues please hit the contact link above.

Johnny Roselli was the mob's ambassador-without-portfolio, corrupting the film industry's unions in Hollywood and becoming the go-to guy in Las Vegas and Miami. After testifying before a Senate committee and emerging as a player in the mob's long-rumored involvement in JFK's assassination, his body washed up off Miami. Meyer Lansky was the mob's gambling czar and set up casinos in Saratoga
Nina?s Just Fun? patent t-bar brogues are just? fun
2007-10-05 23:20:00
Nina's Just Fun' patent t-bar brogues are just... fun They made be called 'Just Fun', but actually these black patent heels by Nina are rather practical, too. Available in black and caramel, they're a combination of everything that's fashionable in shoes at the moment: patent leather, t-bars, brogue detailing... and that chunky, almost-wedge heel is the perfect finishing touch. These are $69.95 and destined to become one of your winter wardrobe staples, should you buy them.
Brogues from Matalan for just £12!
2007-10-05 17:04:00
Brogues from Matalan for just £12! Every season there is a shoe trend that sweeps the fashion spectrum, culminating on the high street where it's available in every single shop. This season that trend has to be the brogue, which is available in a range of colours, shapes, and heel height. In an ideal world, I have my eye on a pair from Miu Miu - court brogues that are patent and high. Knowing that I can't possibly justify that expense I am prepared to settle for a pair that I will indulge in the trend of. Therefore, I have been unashamedly scouring cheap high street stores in search of a pair that I like and are ridiculously cheap. I have now laid my beady eye on this lovely pair which will set me back a mere 12 golden nuggets (£12).

Picture perfect brogues from Accessorize?
2007-09-21 16:48:00
Picture perfect brogues from Accessorize... It's taken a little while for the high street to get the hang of the shoe-boot-brogue combination, but I'll say this: it's been worth the wait! In a rich chocolate brown leather, and with a lovely satin lace-up trim, these are perfect in all of their glorious detail. Rounded off with an angular heel and vintage-like feel, you'd probably expect to pay quite a lot for these beauties. Luckily, fortune is smiling on we shoe-lovers today: they're a bargain £45 from Accessorize!

Small Rant : Rouges vs Rogues
2007-06-30 11:27:00
Right, as stated before, i'ld post about something which has been ticking me off for quite some time now.As the title says : is it Rouges, or Rogues? Because some people dont seem to be able to spell it right. It's ROGUES ,people, the class which backstabs you when you least expect it & can open lockboxes! And they can sap! (Sapped girls dont yell, as we all know)There is no such thing as ROUGES, the word Rouge exists, its something you put on your cheeks to make it seem like you're blushing a bit. Would you put something on your face if you'ld see a Rogue? I wouldn't, thats for sure...Just had to write a small rant about this because every day i see people spamming trade with "LF Rouge to open my lockbox" & stuff. I've never seen make-up open a lockbox to be honest.Pengo's World of Warcraft Adventures http://pengoswowadventures.blog-spot.com

Lucero - Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers
2006-12-28 05:02:01
Lucero probably romanticizes alcohol-soaked working-class futility to an unhealthy degree, and Ben Nichols is hardly the first blue-collar bard to look for a way out of a dead-end town at the bottom of a shot glass. But on the Memphis roots rockers’ fifth album, ‘Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers’, Nichols’ gritted tales, sung as if [...]
