ROLLS-ROYCE RELEASES FIRST SKETCHES OF RR4
2008-05-31 05:54:00 Rolls-Royce Motor Cars revealed the first design sketches of its next new model. Known as RR4, the car is due to be launched in 2010 and will sit alongside the Phantom model line-up. RR4 will be smaller than Phantom and powered by a new engine, unique to Rolls-Royce. The design was signed off in 2007 and engineering development is now fully underway. The Goodwood manufacturing facilities are being completely reconfigured to accommodate the RR4, with extended paint, wood and leather shops as well as a second assembly line. The company will move to a two shift system next year as it gears up for full production of the new model. 2008-04-23 07:18:00 BMW names Tom Purves CEO of Rolls-Royce BMW has announced that Tom Purves will become the new CEO of Rolls-Royce, effective July 1st. Purves, 59, will be taking over the position from Ian Robertson, who in turn will be taking over Stefan Krausewill's position as head of BMW's sales and marketing. Purves actually started his career with Rolls-Royce as an apprentice engineer, and most recently headed up BMW's North American sales subsidiary. According to Automotive News, Purves joined BMW in 1985 and ran Land Rover, Mini, MG and Rover before taking his position in North America in 1999. Purves will reach BMW's mandatory retirement age of 60 in November, but it remains unclear if the retirement age was fully responsible for the move. Rolls-Royce has no such mandatory retirement age.

The new car follows in the footsteps of the new Drophead Coupe, which is a convertible version of the Phantom. The large driver-oriented grand tourer is powered by the company's 6.75-liter V12 that produces 453 horsepower, 531 pound-feet of torque and has segment-leading fuel economy. A 25 percent increase in fuel capacity, compared to the Drophead Coupe, adds significant driving range. At the core of the Phantom Coupe is an aluminum chassis. The lightweight unibody structure is hand made, requiring over 430 feet of welding. "Rolls-Royce has always been about pace, performance and style," Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chief Designer, Ian Cameron, said.
