Vatican Observatory says aliens would be ?God?s creatures?
2008-05-15 05:44:00 Reverend Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, was quoted in an Associated Press article as saying that any extraterrestrials, if they exist, would be “extraterrestrial brothers”. Apparently, Ref. Funes was interviewed on the topic of the interaction between the Roman Catholic Church and science in the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano. In some respects, this interview was probably pointless. Extraterrestrial bacteria, never mind intelligent organisms, have yet to be discovered even within our own solar system, never mind outside it. So who cares, right? The problem is that scientists continue to launch powerful instruments like the Hubble Space Telescope and it’s eventual successor, the James Webb Space Telescope. The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is systematically scanning the sky, looking for unusual patterns in the background that might indicate intelligent life. The Kepler mission will search for...
Vatican says aliens could exist
2008-05-14 12:19:00 Just as there are multiple forms of life on earth, so there could exist intelligent beings in outer space created by God. And some aliens could even be free from original sin, the Vatican's astronomer speculates.
ArtSunday: ??to see and be amazed?: The LIFE and Times of Technology in Ame
2008-03-30 17:06:00 Part one in a series. During its 36-year run, LIFE Magazine traversed a period of technological innovation and peril unsurpassed in the recorded history of humanity. As the first issue was released in November of 1936, a resurgent Germany was constructing the most awesome war machine the world had yet seen, a development that literally threatened the very future of the hemisphere. LIFE?s final issue went to press at the end of 1972, roughly three weeks after NASA?s last manned mission to the moon, Apollo 17, closed the books on a program that proved — theoretically, at least — that humanity was not inevitably bound to this planet. The technological distance between these two moments is mind-boggling. German engineers working on the development of rocketry could perhaps, just barely, envision a trip to the moon, but for most everybody else such an idea remained the stuff of pulp science fiction. Nonetheless, human technology did cover this distance, and it did so in t...

Jury decision in fraud case could rest on Roman Catholic church law
2008-03-03 14:21:00 The case is that of Dennis Riccitelli, a former Roman Catholic priest charged in 2004 with fraud and stealing thousands of dollars from his Mesa church. Under canon law, a priest has the right to spend his church's money however he sees fit, his lawyers told the judge. So likely no matter how he used the church's money, he could not have run afoul of Arizona law.
