2007-12-20 17:54:00 Left-handed reliever Ron Mahay and the Kansas City Royals finalized an $8 million, two-year contract on Thursday. GMDM continues run of great transactions with signing of Ron Mahay
2007-12-20 02:48:00 A week and a half after denying the Braves' arbitration offer, lefty reliever Ron Mahay has signed a two-year contract with the Royals worth $8 million, according to sources. This is a great deal. Before we get to the stats, read what Rangers Fan has to say about the former Rangers reliever who went to Atlanta last July as part of the Jarrod Saltalamacchia/Mark Teixeira deal:"Mahay was a lock-down guy. He just always seemed in control. He could come in and get one out or pitch three innings. I always really liked Mahay."And if that's not convincing, try this:In a combined 58 games last season with the Rangers and Braves, Mahay was 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA. Mostly a late-inning situational reliever, he had 37 walks and 55 strikeouts in 67 innings. Atlanta offered him arbitration last month.If there's one concern about Mahay -- who was a position player early in his baseball life before converting to a pitcher -- it's that he has a tendency to get complacent after signing a big contrac...
The Mahay Market
2007-12-06 00:27:00 UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:25pm: The Braves will at least have a discussion with Mahay as a courtesy. They won't sign him unless his price comes down. MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Yankees are the frontrunner, in contrast to Sherman's note below. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 9:45am: Joel Sherman says the Yankees don't like the price for Mahay and are considering alternatives such as Damaso Marte or John Grabow. FROM 12-5-07 at 7:55am: According to Marc Lancaster, the Rays are "firmly in the mix" for popular 36 year-old lefty reliever Ron Mahay. Four other teams are involved - the Yankees, Royals, Giants, and Astros. I still haven't heard San Francisco's rationale to entertaining a three-year, $12MM pact for a 36 year-old reliever. The Royals being in the mix is a tad perplexing as well. showad();

Rays Interested In Ron Mahay
2007-12-01 23:00:00 According to Marc Lancaster, the Rays are looking for a left-handed reliever. Ron Mahay is on the radar, and Jeremy Affeldt is another possibility. The Rays are moving quickly to plug up their holes - will this team finally break .500 in 2008? Looking through the MLBTR archives, the Yankees, Brewers, and Royals seem to be the main suitors for Mahay. Meanwhile Affeldt interests the Mariners, Braves, and Astros. Lancaster's article also indicates the Rays are looking for a left-handed hitter who can handle right field and first base. DRays Bay thinks that means Darin Erstad, Ryan Klesko, or Mike Lamb. I'll add Cliff Floyd, Luke Scott, Shawn Green, Trot Nixon, Brad Wilkerson, and Eric Hinske to the discussion. showad();

Today's Arbitration Decisions
2007-12-01 19:18:00 The decision whether to offer your own free agent arbitration can affect your team in two ways: you may end up retaining a player you didn't want, or you may score a draft pick or two as compensation. With that in mind let's run down the rumors regarding some Type A and B free agents. The Red Sox plan on offering arbitration to Type B Eric Gagne. Worst case scenario, they hang onto him for one more year. Best case, they get a sandwich pick. The Astros have to decide on Trever Miller and Mark Loretta. Both are Type Bs, but the Astros might not want them back. Richard Justice notes that the old Astro regime made a mistake not offering arbitration to Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. The Angels decided not to offer arby to Bartolo Colon, because the most they could give him would be a 20% pay cut. So best case scenario they could get him for one year, $11.2MM. Colon is not a Type A or B, so there's no compensation regardless. The Phils will ...

Brewers Targeting Herges, Hawkins, Mahay
2007-11-14 17:50:00 Tom Haudricourt checks in with some names among the eight or nine free agent relievers on Brewers GM Doug Melvin's radar. And to think, they cut this part out of Haudricourt's newspaper article. Melvin is currently interested in righties Matt Herges and LaTroy Hawkins, as well as southpaw Ron Mahay. The Rockies have one-year offers on the table for Herges and Hawkins in the $1.5-2MM range. Any team guaranteeing two years can probably have Herges or Hawkins. Mahay's in the three-year, $12MM class. Haudricourt suggests David Riske, another 3/12 type, might also be a consideration. The Brewers have an offer out to Francisco Cordero, and haven't decided whether to make a proposal to Scott Linebrink. Both are Type A free agents, so at least the Brewers should offer them arbitration. I say let 'em both walk and reap the draft picks. showad();

Rays Interested In Mahay
2007-11-11 07:45:00 According to Marc Topkin, the Rays have interest in southpaw reliever Ron Mahay (hat tip DRays Bay). The 36 year-old had a well-timed solid season in 2007. J.C. Romero's three year, $12MM deal might have moved the bar a little for middle relievers. If Romero gets that, then maybe Mahay gets three years, $15MM. I would think that closing experience would be a prerequisite for an AAV higher than $5MM. Aside from the Rays, the Rockies and Royals are known to be interested in Mahay. showad();

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Barrett, Fukumori
2007-11-08 22:59:00 What are the Rockies up to as they plot to defend their NL pennant? Tracy Ringolsby and Troy E. Renck have the latest. Ringolsby says Garrett Atkins is staying put, which should help the third baseman relax a little bit. This echoes Renck's sentiments yesterday. Renck also noted that the Rox won't be offering Atkins a multiyear deal anytime soon. Yesterday Renck said that after Yorvit Torrealba, the Rockies were considering Jose Molina, Paul Lo Duca, Jason Kendall, and Ramon Castro for catcher. However Ringolsby says today that Michael Barrett and Kendall are the main targets. Renck has come on board with that today, noting that Dan O'Dowd has contacted the agents for Barrett, Kendall, and Lo Duca. Ringolsby adds that the Rockies are exploring the Japanese reliever market, namely Hitoki Iwase and Kazuo Fukumori. Fukumori might appeal as the cheaper of the two. Meanwhile the Indians, Brewers, Phillies, and Mets like Brian Fuentes. We've a...

Pie For Laird and Mahay?
2007-07-30 18:43:00 Phil Rogers has a rumor up on the Tribune blog today, where he indicated that the Cubs are thinking short-term and may be willing to give up Felix Pie in a deal. According to Rogers, Pie for Gerald Laird and Ron Mahay is a possibility. It seems that Mahay has since gone to Atlanta, so perhaps Rogers' post went up before then. Even if it was C.J. Wilson instead of Mahay I'd consider it a horrible deal for the Cubs. Pie is a five-tool center fielder and he's raking at Triple A. Trading him for Laird would be absurd even if Laird threw out 100% of baserunners. Now if Torii Hunter is in play, the Cubs should at least listen. Not sure if I'd make that move, but at least Hunter would net the Cubs a few extra wins this year.

Latest Mark Teixeira Trade Rumors
2007-07-30 15:22:00 Now we're really getting down to the wire; will Jon Daniels take this thing all the way to tomorrow's deadline, knowing that some teams will move on if he doesn't commit soon? Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News writes of serious talks with the Angels, Dodgers, and Braves. Grant was the one who still saw the Dodgers involved yesterday, and he's held fast to that. He believes Arizona's late interest may kick the Dodger talks back into high gear. Inclusion of Clayton Kershaw would get it done pretty quickly, it seems. In that scenario a reliever would go to L.A. as well. Tony Jackson of the Los Angeles Daily News has a source saying an Internet report that the Dodgers offered James Loney, Andre Ethier, and Jonathan Meloan to the Rangers for Teixeira and Joaquin Benoit is false. I'm not sure what Internet report Jackson is referring to; Jayson Stark mentioned Meloan recently but said nothing about an offer. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Con...
