Loyal MHR reader mdierk started the conversation in this Diary, I wanted to continue it here! Fourteen of the Broncos sixteen opponents on the schedule are pre-determined every year using the rotating schedule system.  Next season those divisions are the NFC South and AFC East.  The other 2 are based on the team's finish.  Despit the Broncos finishing with a losing record, the AFC West was horrible and the Broncos still finished in 2nd place.  Because of that "lofty" placement, the Broncos earned matchups with the second place team from the AFC North and AFC South, and neither will be easy. From the Denver Post. Also being reported in the Rocky Mountain News Javon Walker dropped the first bomb of the Broncos' offseason this morning. In a rambling briefing with the press, Walker essentially said he longer wants to be with the Broncos. "It's not for Javon," Walker said. "It's not for me." Walker bounced and back and forth and said that he'll do whatever the Broncos decide but he concluded by saying that being here is not for him. Walker even suggested a return to Green Bay. The Broncos acquired him from the Packers in April 2006 for a second round draft choice. Walker was unhappy with the Packers when he was dealt. Walker missed seven games this season with a knee injury and second-year player Brandon Marshall flourished, catching 102 balls. Walker said that the offense is centered around Marshall now and he is happy for his teammate. Last game prep of the year gang!  I'm sorry it IS the last game of the season, and I'm sorry it's the second losing season in the Shanahan era. Like last week, there is plenty of bad news.  But unlike last week, there is more good news I can share. I apologize for putting this story up later in the week than usual.  I came across some surprising tidbits while studying the Vikings, and I'll share them with you below. Denver rushing Denver faces a tough rush defense in the cover-2 that MINN runs.  In most cover-2 defenses the rush should be up the middle, since the LBs are typicaly zoned wide and are fast.  No such luck against MINN. I have read descriptions of MINN being a Tampa-2 system team, but I think they are an odd variation of the cover-2 and not a true Tampa defense.  This was my first surprise studying for this prep. First, they have strong, powerful DTs that do a great job stopping the run.  They are willing to penetrate to go after th...

From Denverpost.com.... In a move showing that the team has very little patience for error even in the final days of a lost season, the Broncos cut punter Paul Ernster early this morning. Ernster had a horrible game in Denver's 23-3 loss at San Diego on Monday. Ernster had two terrible punts in the game. Ernster, who was Denver's punter in 2006, returned for the San Diego game after Todd Sauerbrun was released last week. Sauerbrun was released in the aftermath of an incident involving a Denver cab driver earlier this month. Ernster's agent Brett Tessler had no comment on Ernster's release. The team is expected to sign a replacement today for Sunday's season finale against visiting Minnesota. Well, Happy New Year!  Another cut punter in 2 weeks!  I've got the weekend off, maybe I can punt for a day get booed off the field and keep the jersey!  LOL

The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed kicker Matt Prater to their active roster from Miami's practice squad, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. Prater (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) is a first-year player who spent the last four weeks on the Dolphins' practice squad after Atlanta waived him from its active roster on Sept. 18. He saw the first action of his career with Atlanta at the start of the season, playing in the Falcons' first two games and kicking off four times for 285 yards (71.3 avg.) with three touchbacks. He also connected on 1-of-4 field-goal attempts and one extra-point attempt. The Denver Broncos on Tuesday made several roster transactions, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. The club signed free-agent punter Paul Ernster and added safety Roderick Rogers to its active roster from its practice squad. Denver also waived punter Todd Sauerbrun and safety Marviel Underwood while placing safety Nick Ferguson on its reserve/injured list with a right knee injury. Ernster (6-foot-0, 217 pounds) is a third-year punter who joins the Broncos for his second stint with the club after he was waived by Denver on Aug. 28. He signed with Cleveland on Sept. 8 and punted in the Browns' season opener against Pittsburgh a day later before they waived him on Sept. 18.
