Chicagoans plunge from hotel roof for lung health
2009-10-26 21:11:00
By Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz RedEye -Lauren LaViola, a 27-year-old administrative assistant who lives in Lincoln Park, said she's always been terrified of heights. But as she prepared Sunday to rappel 27 stories down the front of The Wit hotel in the name of lung health, LaViola's fears gave way to thoughts of her father, who died of lung cancer two months ago. "I'm a little nervous," LaViola said quietly, clutching her harness, moments before she stepped out onto the hotel roof downtown. "But I'm OK. I'm just not going to look down." LaViola was among 80 people who rappelled 27 stories from the roof of The Wit hotel Sunday to raise money for the Respiratory Healthhttp://www.chicagonow.com-/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi?__mode=view&-amp;_type=entry&id=27262&am-p;blog_id=6 Association of Metropolitan Chicago. Hiking to the roof of Phuket!
2009-09-06 07:47:00
Hiking is not a popular activity in Phuket. Yes, you have places where people go to exercise such as Suan Luang Park or Bang Wad Reservoir, but in general Phuket is not a hikers paradise. There are few footpaths, too much land is privately owned and .. it's really really hot most of the time!I had never given much thought to hiking up the hills in Phuket. Most of the big hills are accesible by road anyway (Buddha Mountain and Radar Hill for example), although I have been thinking of a hike up Buddha mountain for a while since a friend told me you can hike it from Karon Beach. I got more interested when I read a blog by an American expat who lives in Phuket. Glenn used to do lots of long distance hikes, and has been exploring the trails in the hills in Phuket. There are in fact more than I realised, many used by rubber plantation workers. Rubber is still big business here, most of the bigger hills are covered in rubber trees. Glenn has been working on a "High Trail" through Phuket, ...
Smart ForTwo Takes Top Honors in New IIHS Roof Crush Testing
2009-08-30 15:40:00
Not too long ago, news broke that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) would begin conducting tests to see how safe occupants were in a collision that led to a roll-over. Since then, they have been working their way through each vehicle segment, and posting the results about which car, truck or minivan provided the most protection. In a recent set of tests conducted on the small car segment, the number one choice came as a surprise to more than a few.

IIHS Begins Testing Roof Rollover Strength to Improve Safety for New Vehicl
2009-03-28 01:02:00
Safety is becoming one of the most important selling points for pretty much every vehicle, with a special emphasis being put on Sport Utility Vehicles. The reason for this is the higher risk of rollover and the huge increase in fatalities due to rollovers in SUV as compared to sedans and coupes. It was this same statistic that led the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to begin a new kind of testing on vehicles.

External Floating roof tank - Design Pressure
2009-03-07 08:43:00
Dear Friends, 1) I am designing a external floating roof tank. I want to know that what should be the maximum internal design pressure for this tank. As per EN14015 table 3 it is '0'. If so is PVV required for this tank? 2) What should be the maximum gap between rim and shell?
Don't Let Things Grow On Your Roof!
2009-02-18 23:22:00
Winter is a great time for dirt, leaves, and other debris to pile up in your rain gutters. Leave it long enough and there will be buildup. Leave it a really long time and those bits of dust, plantlife and other things will mush together and decompose, eventually becoming plant-worthy soil. Add a few seeds and some rain, and before you know it, green sprouts are popping up on your roof. Today I passed a home in Los Gatos in which this seems to have happened. Grass and weeds were sprouting out of the rain gutters and had crept onto the roof quite a few inches. Why is this a problem? Because the more you grow things on the roof, the more moisture you have getting trapped up there and the faster the roof decomposes. You don't want things like fungus and dry rot to munch away at your home, but having plants grow on your roof is going to lead to exactly that. Keep your gutters clean so problems like this do not have a chance to start. It is i...

3 Marketing Tactics That Will Send Your Sales Through The Roof
2009-01-21 03:41:00
When the tide comes in, all boats in the harbor go up... the tough part is figuring out how to bring the tide in. Booming economies come and go and bring surges of profit increases, then ebb to leave behind shortages and tough times. Regardless, there are some business that just seem to weather the tough times with grace, not really affected by recessions. It's almost as though they have a secret source... maybe they do... customers.Hey, customers always buy... in the good times and in the bad times. They still have needs and still make purchases. When you understand their needs and wants, you have the keys to keeping your business afloat when others are grounded. Implement these three tactics successful marketers use, and you're set for success.1. Just OneCustomers can be like a two year old in a candy store... they want it all. Yeah, sometimes it's hard to make up your mind about what you really do want when everything looks so good. That's why it pays to promote one...

Something hit the roof -- like a rubber ball
2008-12-24 13:00:00
Sunday Gazette-MailCharleston, WVDec 22, 1968Fayetteville-- Their search has dragged on for 23 years, but George & Jeannie Sodder will never believe five of their children burned to death in that Christmas morning fire of 1945.A weather-scarred billboard on a lonely WV road offers $10,000 for information leading to the five, regarded as lost in the fire that leveled the Sodder home in minutes. The undying hope that the two boys and three girls still are alive has taken the Sodders to a Mexican border town and a Spanish hamlet in Florida. But always frustration: nothing. For nearly two decades, this billboard stood at the site of the Sodder house fire. It showed photos of the missing Sodder children and offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to their recovery. Still, after all these years, the Sodders receive letters, photographs and telephone calls from persons across the country, from those who say they saw the children.Authorities in this small coal mining community snuggl...
on the roof of the world
2008-12-24 10:18:00
I have been reading Alain De Botton?s ?The Art of Travel?, which features a graphic of the view from an jet airplane window, on its cover. (I?m fairly certain it is a mock up rather than a true photo mainly because there is no internal reflection). The image is accurate in that it shows the interesting phenomena of a very dark sky above the horizon, when view from the upper atmosphere, because the air above is very rarified and has little moisture thus little backscatter of light. Taken over the great barrier reef, about 20 minutes out from cairns. (note the reflection of my shirt in the lower part of the image)
