2008 Rookie of the Year Predictions
2008-03-26 13:27:00 Before the 1996 season, I predicted that Derek Jeter and Todd Hollandsworth would win the Rookie of the Year awards. I believe that was the last time I made an accurate preseason award prediction. However, requests for award picks were common in yesterday's chat. I didn't post any because I wanted some time to mull it over. I'll post more predictions over the next few days. Here are my 2008 Rookie of the Year predictions; I'm interested to see yours in the comments. Tough call in the NL, lot of good choices. AL: Clay Buchholz. Runners up: Evan Longoria, Jacoby Ellsbury, Joba Chamberlain. NL: Kosuke Fukudome. Runners up: Johnny Cueto, Geovany Soto, Clayton Kershaw.

Brandt Snedeker.. 2007 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year?
2007-12-06 18:51:00 2007 will be a year PGA Tour rookie Brandt Snedeker will never forget. Well on his way to winning the Rookie of the Year honor, Brandt amassed over 2.8 million in winnings, along with one PGA tour win, and 5 top ten finishes. The 27 year old Snedeker didn't even get a chance to vote for himself, as he was playing in Japan when the Rookie of the Year ballots came out. "I'm sure I'll be kicking myself later," he said, laughing when asked what he'll do if he loses by one vote. Ryan Braun: Baseballs First Jewish Rookie Of The Year
2007-11-19 05:36:00 (Image: Ryan Braun, Credit: JS Online) It looks as if Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers has just made history by becoming the first Jewish player to become Rookie of the Year.(Jerusalem Post) Ryan Braun became baseball's first Jewish Rookie of the Year. Braun, the slugging third baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers, picked up the award Monday in the National League. In the voting by the Baseball Writers of America, Braun edged Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, 128-126. Although Braun was never raised Jewish by his Israeli dad, he seems to take an immense pride in his Jewish heritage.Note: While Braun will probably decide to remain in the US because of his career, hopefully he will consider signing up with the Israel Baseball League (if he has time during the off season).Content Copyright 2006-2007 of IsraGood. Brewers? Braun revels in ride to NL Rookie of the Year (AP)
2007-11-13 23:35:00 Ryan Braun’s teammates made the power-hitting third baseman dress up as a hot dog during the season as part of his rookie hazing. It was a not-so-subtle reference. “That was a little bit of a ploy into the some of things I’d done, the showboating a couple of times too much,” the Milwaukee slugger said. Read ...

Pedroia, Braun Garner Rookie of the Year Awards
2007-11-12 20:36:00 Looking back at the month of April when Dustin Pedroia was barely hitting his weight, you wouldn’t have even thought that he could be the AL Rookie of the Year. Then as the season went on when he started hitting around Miguel Cabrera’s weight, you could definitely see him being the rookie of the year. This afternoon, the BBWAA (Baseball Writer’s Association of America) made it official, Pedroia is your 2007 American League Rookie of the Year. He becomes the first Red Sox rookie to win the award since Nomar Garciaparra did it back in 1997. Pedroia put up excellent numbers in his rookie campaign. His .317 batting average was the highest ever by a rookie second baseman, breaking the record of Jim Viox set back in 1913 when Viox played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He started out the season with a rough April, hitting .182 and Red Sox Nation was calling for Alex Cora to play second base. Terry Francona stuck with the kid and he responded by hitting .405 in May. He contin...

Braun's Defense Should Cost Him Rookie of the Year
2007-09-28 15:38:00 Milwaukee Brewers 3B Ryan Braun is an amazing hitter. But to call him a butcher on defense is an insult to knife-wielding swine slicers. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to call Braun the worst defensive player of any starter in the Major Leagues. The Brewers lost 9-5 to the San Diego Padres on Thursday, blowing a chance to gain a game on the Chicago Cubs, who had lost earlier in the day. One of the main culprits in the loss was Braun, who committed not one, not two, but three errors at third base.Braun's is fielding is so atrocious, it should be enough for Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to win the National League Rookie of the Year. Will it happen? Probably not. Writers often forget there are two parts to the game and concentrate solely on offensive numbers. And there is no doubt Braun has had an amazing year at the plate, but Tulowitzki isn't that far off. In 440 at-bats, Braun has hit .325/.370/.639, with 24 doubles, 34 HR and 95 RBI. Meanwhile, in 590 at-bats, Tulowitzki h...
Rookie of the Year Predictions
2007-09-16 17:57:00 Predicting rookies of the year this late in the season is not very risky but I look for either Dustin Pedroia or Daisuke Matsuzaka to win the AL Rookie of the Year award. Rookie of the Year - Home Run Hitters
2007-08-24 13:39:00 The American League has added a disappointing crop of rookie HR hitters. This was not supposed to occur. Royals 3B Alex Gordon and Devil Rays OF Delmon Young were projected to be elite hitters. 11 HRs for Gordon and 9 for Young say otherwise. As a matter of fact, White Sox 3B Josh Fields is likely to lead AL rookies in HRs as his 15 seems out of reach for 2007 - at least to those disappointed fantasy owners of Gordon and Young. In the National League, the situation is different. Brewers 3B Ryan Braun has seamlessly handled his promotion from AAA to hit 24 HRs. However, that does not lead NL rookies. Arizona CF Chris B. Young does with 26 HRs. Rockies' SS Troy Tulowitzki's 17 HRs are impressive, but like Steve McCroskey in Airplane, TT picked the wrong season to be a rookie. PLAYERTEAMHRRBISBBA Chris B. Rookie Of The Year
2007-07-11 03:19:00 This year's race for the 2007 Rookie-of-the-Year focuses on the National League because there are no serious hitters to compete against the obvious success of Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. Because Dice-K has vast professional experience in the increasingly better-than-AAA Japanese leagues, a strong hitter would draw the attention of voters who feel, despite the rules, that Matsuzaka was not truly a rookie. That is not the case as pre-season contenders Delmon Young and Alex Gordon have disappointed so far. Alex Gordon by truly failing, and Delmon Young by not living up to the hype of a 30/30 player. He is on pace for a very good rookie season of 18/96/12/.278 though. As anyone can tell from the list, the NL has the most attractive hitters. Hunter Pence leads all NL rookies with 40 extra base hits, and Diamondbacks' rookie Chris Young is second with 29. Ryan Braun and Josh Hamilton are 4th and 5th with 27 and 26 XBHs respectively. Hard-charging Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki garner...

DiceK and the Rookie of the Year
2007-06-25 19:51:00 There is a perception among the cognoscenti that Japanese players have a more difficult time winning the Rookie of the Year (ROY) award, based upon the fact that many voters do not consider them to be true "rookies" because of their service time in Japan's Professional Baseball League. Will this "perception" affect (Andrew DiceK) Matsuzaka's ROY prospects for 2007. (Has Berman used this obvious permutation yet?) First, let's examine whether in recent history a deserving Japanese ROY candidate was denied:In 2000 and 2001, the AL ROY awards went to Kaz Sasaki (then age 32) and Ichiro (then age 28). Sasaki, with 37 saves, won by default, beating out a weak field headed by Terence Long, Mark Quinn (the Eskimo?) and Bengie Molina, who had a sneaky-good rookie campaign with .739 ops in 473 at bats. Ichiro romped in the ROY voting (27-1 1st place votes over CC Sabathia) and even won the MVP (over Giambi's 1.137 ops)! Most people think immediately of 2003, when Hideki Matsui (then age 29...

Young Pence for NL rookie of the year
2007-05-24 06:41:00 We here at On Sports are throwing our support for Hunter Pence as National League rookie of the year. Why the rush? Part of this is parental gloating. After all, we discovered the Astros? new phenom, as readers of this blog will recall (?Nothing?s more joyful than spring training.?) Back in March, we watched Pence drill a double in extra innings that set up a game-winning single that helped the Astros defeat the Phillies in Osceola County Stadium. We liked how Pence pumped his fist as he crossed the plate with the winning run as if it were the final game of the World Series, not just a rest-the-veterans mid-March spring practice. We also pondered how great it would be to see young Pence doing the same thing in the Fall Classic, even though we are Yankees fans (and even though ?we? is really just ?I,? or ?me.?)I?ve been reading about Pence more and more the past several weeks -- and tonight I watched him run back to snare a certain extra-base hit near the fence in San Francisco. It?s...

AL Rookie-of-the-Year
2007-05-20 03:41:00 Entering 2007, the rookie hype was enormous. The Devil Rays' Delmon Young and the Royals' Alex Gordon were expected to run away with the award ex-Daisuke Matzusaka. Six weeks into the season, there is some question about pre-annointment ceremonies. Below is a list of AL rookies who are playing regularly. Needless to say pre-season prognostications have been off. 2007 AL Rookie of the Year candidates
2007-03-28 18:51:00 2007 Top 5 Rookie of the Year candidates1. Delmon Young, Devil Rays: For the young man who had been outspoken about not being brought to The Show earlier, it's time to put up and clam up. In his brief exposure -- 30 games last September (.317 with 13 extra-base hits) and this spring (.323) -- he hasn't shown anything that shorts his potential. Young could break in as a 30-30 rookie, but his biggest challenge will be proving to be as good a teammate as he is a player.2. Daisuke Matsuzaka, Red Sox: The man who will turn Red Sox Nation into the Land of the Rising Daisuke-san. If he can log two wins for each pitch he allegedly throws, Boston will love him in October even more than it does now. His first three starts will come against Cactus League-based teams that haven't yet seen him, which should get him off to a fast start that will only intensify the mania. 3. Kouzmanoff : Potential NL Rookie Of The Year
2007-03-10 16:50:02 Padres 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled and scored on Paul McAnulty's single in the second, and also hit his first spring homer with two outs in the sixth om Friday against the Cubs. He finished the game 2-for-3 with with two runs and one RBI. He is now 5-for-12 (.417) with four runs, two doubles, one homer, two RBI and three walks in five spring games. Kouzmanoff has great credentials to be the hitter the Padres have long sought at third. Most experts believe he will hit major league pitching, despite a somewhat unorthodox swing. But can he field the position? Before trading him to the Padres, the Indians had him playing first base in the Arizona Instructional League. The 25-year-old batted a combined .379 with 22 homers and 75 RBI in 94 games between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Buffalo, making him one of the quickest-rising prospects in baseball. Kouzmanoff no longer will have to compete for at-bats with Andy Marte and that makes him a super sleeper in any league and an NL Rookie of ...

Offensive Rookie Of The Year For Vince Young
2007-01-04 14:45:02 While DeMeco Ryans picked up the Defensive Rookie Of The Year award, the Associated Press have deemed fit to name Vince Young the Offensive Rookie Of The Year after taking almost half the 50 votes cast, beating off competition from Marques Colston (Saints), Maurice Drew (Jaguars), Marcus McNeill (Chargers) and Reggie Bush (Saints) who finished bottom of the voting order with three nominations. When Steve McNair left the Titans for the Ravens it looked like they’d fallen apart. Kerry Collins was draft in but they still couldn’t get anything going and started the season out at 0-5. Up stepped Vince Young and effectively lead the team on an 8-3 run, finishing the season at 8-8. Young is only the second quarterback to win the honour in almost a half century, Big Ben Roethlisberger being the other. Young also rushed for over 500 yards this season and will no doubt, as his career expands, chase down Michael Vick’s PB for this season and beyond. Fair play to the chap. |
