Palin, ?Banning? Books, Rookie Mistakes & the MSM

When I first blogged about the media interest in Sarah Palin’s 12-year-old inquiry into banning books at the Wasilla Public Library, I wrote, that this issue “so concerned her that an overzealous media [could] find no evidence that she ever pursued the matter after her initial inquiries.“ Something else occurred to me as I pondered the ...

Rookie impresses as Rangers blank Rays
2008-08-17 08:10:00
The Texas Rangers were looking from a good outing from anyone in its rotation. Rookie Matt Harrison provided a huge boost to the Rangers’ staff by throwing eight shutout innings, sending Texas past the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 Saturday night. The Rangers, who came in with baseball’s worst team ERA at 5.45, had allowed 69 runs over the past seven games. Texas’ starters were even worse in that span with a 15.36 ERA in 25 innings. The Commish Speaks on rookie salaries
2008-08-05 04:02:00
Goodell speaks out on rookie salaries By Ralph Garcia for Football Reporters Online 8/1/08Several weeks back, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made his feelings about the rookie pay scale known. He called it ridiculous and rightfully so. Well no kidding commish. I like that he mentions a system where the younger players can renegotiate their contracts after they have proven themselves. He made another great point when he said that when the last CBA was approved no one took into consideration the hit the economy would take. The affect it had later has made us want for the old days. We need to get back to the days where a player would earn his money by his play. Now these days we are losing core players. Players that have taken these teams to playoffs and made their mark in the league are being lost to the salary given to unproven talent. In the past you would have to work hard to earn your pay and now all you have to do is have a great college career and you are set for life. Fo...

Rookie QBs receive praise
2008-06-09 06:00:00
Rookie quarterbacks Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn have been receiving praise from Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy after this past week's OTA practice open to the public. In a press conference following the practice McCarthy, in particular, singled out Brohm for the progress he is making."I'll tell you, Brian Brohm is as sharp a young quarterback that I have been around," McCarthy is quoted as saying, "and that's a big statement because I have been fortunate enough to coach some very bright quarterbacks in their first and second year in the league. I have been very impressed with the way he picks up the scheme and the way he is able to communicate it."In an interview with Aaron Rodgers that aired on ESPN's SportsCenter over the weekend, Rodgers said that he didn't think there would be a quarterback controversy with Brohm joining the Packers.McCarthy also had a few comments about Flynn and the team in general during his press conference."Matt is getting much better," said ...

The Rookie Report, 6-6-08
2008-06-06 15:56:00
The fact is that we can write a whole report on how good Jay Bruce is on his own. The Reds outfielder has dominated the fantasy scene in his first few games with homeruns, steals, and plenty of hits. Clayton Kershaw has also recently enjoyed his first Major League starts, and fantasy managers opted to use their waiver spots on him as well. Carlos Gonzalez also made his debut recently, and we'll...
Rookie Arredondo giving Angels a helping hand in relief
2008-06-06 14:23:00
Nothing about Jose Arredondo, the 6-foot, 175-pound Angels reliever, seems physically imposing until you see his hands, which look like they belong to an NBA power forward. "He's like E.T.," Manager Mike Scioscia said, "only he has five fingers."And they do more than phone home."I've got big hands, monkey hands," Arredondo said with a chuckle. "That helps me throw the split-fingered fastball, which is a good pitch to have."The 24-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic has used that hard-sinking pitch, along with a slider and 94-mph fastball, to zoom into a prominent late-inning relief role since his May 13 recall from triple-A Salt Lake. After giving up a home run to his first batter, Nick Swisher of the White Sox on May 14, Arredondo has thrown 9 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up five hits, striking out eight and walking none in eight appearances. He has an earned-run average of 0.93.

Report: Dolphins sign rookie Shawn Murphy
2008-05-30 19:22:00
[Editor's Note by Matty I] As I type this note, it's currently 4:30 pm EDT.  And right now, there are no other reports of the Dolphins signing Murphy.  So take the below KFFL report with a grain of salt and wait to hear further confirmation.  And if anyone sees, hears, or reads a report that talks about Murphy potentially having his deal done with the Fins, please post it in the comments. [end note] [UPDATE 4:49 pm] The Miami Herald is now also reporting that the Dolphins have signed Murphy with an official announcement coming shortly. [end update] According to a report on KFFL.com, the Dolphins have signed rookie guard Shawn Murphy to a contract.  The terms are unknown at this point. This isn't surprising, considering the Dolphins had 2 new roster spots cleared following the waiving of Tab Perry and the retirement of undrafted free agent Kory Robertson (which still hasn't been officially announced by the team).  Murphy, a 4th round pick, is expected to ...

Tampa Bay Rookie is officially on a Football Card
2008-05-20 04:02:00
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Rookie WR Dexter Jackson has finally made it to the big leagues. This past Saturday, the 2nd Round NFL Draft Pick took time out of his day to do a photo shoot for Donruss and Upper Deck trading card companies (What happened to Topps?). He was among several other NFL Draft Picks: Darren McFadden (Oakland), Matt Ryan (Atlanta), Jake Long (Miami), and DeSean Jackson (Philly) etc etc... For DJax this was a surreal moment: "It's crazy," said Tampa Bay receiver Dexter Jackson. "Just awhile ago we were in college uniforms, now we're in NFL uniforms. We're all happy to be here. It kind of sinks in when we're all together, seeing us all in different uniforms." - Frank Tadych of NFL.com I don't know about you, but I'm happy to see DJax flying diving through the air for football card photos. I know Gruden's happy. Jackson missed a bit of time during the teams Rookie Mini-Camp, but should be raring to go during this weeks continuation of OTAs...

Football Outsiders: Devin Clark and Dorian Smith the undrafted rookie free
2008-05-15 21:39:00
Football Outsiders has their post-draft analysis of the NFC East up, go enjoy. Author is a guest, one Mike McGibbon, and all seems to be in order in the story. I found no glaring errors, though I'm not sure the Redskins got, as McGibbon wrote, 10 draft picks as a result of our 1st round draft pick trade (I thought we gave up a 1st, 3rd, 5th ro a 2nd, 2nd, 4th. It's been a minute, though, so maybe my memory doesn't serve). Either way, McGibbon knows a lot more about our undrafted free agents than I do, and thus I direct your attention to some guys to watch, per him: Undrafted Free Agents In all, the Redskins brought in 13 undrafted rookie free agents. Of those 13, four were offensive linemen. And of those four, Florida State’s Shannon Boatman and New Mexico’s Devin Clark may have the best chance to make the team, given that both started for most of their final two seasons. Dorian Smith, an All-Pac 10 first-team defensive end from Oregon State, will also challenge for ...

Yankees Re-group Today With Rookie Sensation Phil Rasner
2008-05-10 01:00:00
05/10/08 POINTSHAVERS.COM - The NY Yankees are hoping to beat the Detroit Tigers for the first time this year. They were swept by the Tigers in Yankee Stadium for the first time since 1966; and the Yankees were outscored 20-10 in three games played without Alex Rodriguez. Last night, the Yankees traveled to Detroit to open another 3 game series with the Tigers. The result this time, was much closer. The Yankees lost 6-5 after falling short in a 3-run ninth inning rally.Yankee pitching was mediocre yet again as Triple A call-up Kei Igawa lasted only three and a half innings. He allowed 6 runs on eleven hits. Unfortunately, by the time the relief pitching was able to shut down the Tiger offense, the Yankees found themselves behind, 6-1Today, another Triple A call-up takes the mound. Rookie RHP Phil Rasner will get his second start for the Yankess today. Rasner was simply magnificent in his 2008 Yankee home debut allowing only 2 earned runs and striking out 4 in an 8-2 rout of the stum...

Some informed observations from Rookie Camp
2008-05-09 00:20:00
I thought I'd take the opportunity to share some feedback on Rookie Camp from those in a better position to observe than I.  As always, consider this informed opinion, so take it for what it is worth--I was certainly not there. Also, please remember that the rookies were in shorts and tees, not exactly how they're going to line-up against Seattle in September. I think there is a tendency among very close observers of the game to be disappointed when they first see the rookies up close. They have scouted them ad nauseum, been enthusiastic about drafting them and see a lot of potential. Then, as people with decades in the NFL, they see chinks and problems under close-up first-hand scrutiny. Last year I recall that when the staff first saw Marshawn Lynch and Paul Posluszny, they were struck by how much better they actually were than on tape. They are equally enthusiastic about this year's class--although sadly my report will only deal with a few of them. Leodis McKelvin de...

Welcome to The Show, Rookie
2008-05-05 09:16:00
Well, new Head Coach Jim Zorn's first mini-camp went without a hitch... except if you consider one of your brand new rookies over-sleeping a hitch. Taking off from where CaptChaosSidekick begins with his so very minimalist "not a good sign," we dive right into the article: "Everybody was scouring," coach Jim Zorn said after the practice. "Nobody heard from him, so there was one of two scenarios: either there was some real trouble and we needed to find him, or he screwed up. I haven’t even got to talk to him yet. I know he has been found. I believe it is more in the ‘I screwed up’ category." That's one way to make a first impression on your new employer. To his credit, Zorn played it off as no big thing... but you have to think that Davis is going to get a firm talking to at the very least. Oh, and its a good thing that it happened in mini-camp... because, uh, I'm sure the veterans on the team will let it go and forget it by training camp. Or, at least by the...

Rookie Mini-Camp is hard to judge... No kidding
2008-05-03 05:04:00
Word on the streets is the Bucs are having a hard time evaluating their weekend Rookie Mini-Camp. To me, it would be hard enough to watch 7 draftees plus several other undrafted players who have only one day of preparation and have never played together get on a football field and perform for several coaches. The Bucs thought it would be better to magnify that difficulty by inviting the following players on top of the ones already invited: DE Tommy Blake TCU, DT Chris Bradwell Troy, DE Daniel Brooks Jackson State, K Art Carmody Louisville, T Jared Carnes USF, G Jackie Claude Florida State, LB Derrick Doggett Oregon State, WR Wes Doyle San Diego, CB Bryan Flowers Jacksonville, DE Vegas Franklin Miami, CB Byron Garvin Kansas State, RB Lavarius Giles Jackson State, K Chris Gould Virginia, T Floyd Headen West Texas State, WR Bruce Hocker Duquesne, S Anthony Houlis Florida State, WR Amari Jackson USF, CB Brandon Jackson Georgia Southern, S Kyle Jackson Florida, FB Langston Johnson Yale,...

A rookie NYPD officer faces rape charges
2008-05-02 10:05:00
According to the NY POST: May 2, 2008 -- A rookie NYPD officer faces rape charges after allegedly forcing himself on a sleeping woman in a Manhattan hotel room, The Post has learned. Kevin Johnson, of Brooklyn, was busted Tuesday morning after the purported attack in the Gershwin Hotel at 7 E. 27th St., law-enforcement sources said. Johnson, 27, met several women who were attending a hairstylists' convention at a bar Monday night. The group later went to the women's room at the Gershwin, a source said. Johnson had sex with one of those women, while the others were asleep or out of the room, sources said. Authorities said Johnson left the bed of the woman with whom he had sex, crawled next to one of the other sleeping women, and raped her. Another woman in the room awoke and began yelling before calling 911. Johnson, assigned to the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville, was arrested at the scene. He was suspended without pay and arraigned Wednesday on multiple rape and sexual-abuse cha...
