Rookies visit Hall of Fame
2008-06-17 07:53:00
Former long snapper and current director of player development Rob Davis took all of the Green Bay Packers rookies on a trip to the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio as part of the league's rookie orientation program. All nine Packers draft picks plus their free agents made the trip to the ol' Orange Squeezer to get a feel for the history and tradition of the NFL. It's part of an on-going program to help first year players get acclimated to what they're about to experience."Davis hopes in future years the league will continue the Hall of Fame trips as part of its rookie orientation program, which continued on Monday with the first NFL Player Brand University and also includes the annual Rookie Symposium in San Diego from June 29-July 2," reports Mike Spofford of the Packers official website.Click on the above link to find out more about their trip including the reactions of the first two Packers draft choices, Jordy Nelson and Brian Brohm.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Looking at the American League?s Top Rookies
2008-05-22 03:46:00
We are officially at the quarter mark to the 2008 baseball season. Sure, it has been a relatively small sample size, but there have many surprises in baseball this year, from the Florida Marlins’ success to Cliff Lee’s dominance on the mound for the Cleveland Indians. And, while it is still early, it is a ...
Dolphins sign 3 rookies
2008-05-20 00:16:00
As "JMFlyer" points out in this diary, the Dolphins today signed 3 more rookies, bringing their total of signed draft picks to 4. The 3 they signed today are RBs Jalen Parmele and Lex Hilliard, and DE Lionel Dotson.  Parmele and Hilliard were 6th round picks, while Dotson was a 7th rounder.  The terms of the contracts weren't disclosed, but it's likely they each signed 3 year deals.  As soon as I hear or read any figures, I'll pass them along. The Dolphins now have 4 draft picks signed while no other team in the NFL has even signed one.  Kudos to this front office forworking quickly. The Dolphins also added an undrafted free agent, center Matt Spanos.  Spanos is out of USC and started 9 games for the Trojans last season.

Sunday Bills Notes: All About the Rookies
2008-05-04 17:27:00
The Buffalo Bills are in the midst of their first mini-camp of the 2008-09 season - rookie mini-camp - and Buffalo's top draft picks are reportedly performing well in their first professional workouts.  Be sure to catch the official site's coverage of the three-day camp - the fine folks over there do an outstanding job giving us practice reports, player interviews, and other information.  It's all great stuff. Not surprisingly, rookies are still the talk of the town this weekend in Buffalo.  While I prepare for my final week of college classes and final exams today, here's some reading material for y'all: - Sal Maiorana of the Democrat and Chronicle takes a look at Bills fourth-round cornerback Reggie Corner. - Jeff Matthews of The Town Talk examines the non-existent relationship between Bills seventh-round pick OT Demetrius Bell and his biological father, former NBA star Karl Malone.  Malone has been shockingly absent in Bell's life, but the new Bill may b...
Tampa Bay Bucs Rookies to experience 1st NFL Mini-Camp
2008-05-01 17:00:00
Tampa Bay Buccaneer Rookies CB Aqib Talib, WR Dexter Jackson, OG/OT Jeremy Zuttah, DT Dre' Moore, QB Josh Johnson, LB Geno Hayes, and RB Cory Boyd will get to taste what its like to be part of an NFL Franchise this weekend when they take part in the Bucs Rookie Mini-Camp. The Rookies are not allowed to report permanently to their teams and the ongoing offseason training programs until the third full week of May. This weekends Mini-Camp is also open to first year players, I'm assuming thats first year players in the league, therefore new players to the Bucs Organization like OC Jeff Faine and WR Antonio Bryant will not surface at One Buc Place over the weekend. RB Kenneth Darby, WR Chad Lucas and OT Dennis Roland will attend the weekends events. The rookies will arrive in Tampa today and get their first look at One Buccaneer Place. They will get physicals, meet the Bucs' football staff and sit down for a meeting with Head Coach Jon Gruden. On Friday and Saturday the rookies will...

Utilizing the Rookies
2008-05-01 05:06:00
First of all, tough ballgame tonight.  I missed most of it but when I got into my car I was greeted with something along the lines of this: “…a high popup to shallow center, Ichiro settles under it and the carnage is over.” Thanks to Dave Neihaus for that one.  That, of course, was referring to the ...

Baseball America's Top Rookies in 2008 - NL
2008-02-24 13:20:00
Here is the follow-up version for the NL of the Baseball America Prospect Handbook 2008's Top Rookies for 2008. I am surprised to see Astros pitcher Felipe Paulino selected ahead of catcher J.R. Towles. That is something worth remembering. Who doesn't hope the Phillies rookie choice doesn't make it? A pitcher called "Outman"! Watch for Nationals SP Collin Balester. Listening to Director of Player Development Mike Rizzo on John Sickels' XM Radio show "Down On The Farm", one should expect Ballester to contribute this season. As a 21-year-old with a half-season of AAA experience, he could be a very good player by 2009. Here are a look at the top 5 picks in the NBA Draft last year:#1 Greg Oden - Portland TrailblazersKey Stats: N/A - out for the year#2 Kevin Durant - Seattle SupersonicsKey Stats: 19.3 points 4.2 rebounds 1.14 blocks.#3 Al Horford - Atlanta HawksKey Stats: 8.9 points 9.7 rebounds 1.12 blocks.#4 Mike Conley Jr. - Memphis GrizzliesKey Stats: 8.7 points 5.0 assists in 26 minutes.#5 Jeff Green - Seattle SupersonicsKey Stats: 9 points 4.8 rebounds. My Top 5 Thus Far:#1 Kevin Durant - Seattle SupersonicsWOW. While the Sonics have flopped this year Durant has been a definite bright spot! Durant's biggest criticism coming out of college was that he was too lanky, and needed to put on more weight. While this might effect his rebounding ability, his long arms and freakish wingspan have made him difficult to guard on the offense end and have allowed him to block more than a shot a game. He's already averaging nearly 20 points a night as a rookie, expect his game to really flourish in the next...

Dayn Perry 10 Impact Rookies For The 2008 Season
2007-12-26 22:32:00
The only Yankee on the list was Joba Chamberlain, he was number two. People may be wondering where Phil Hughes is on this list, he apparently threw too many innings to be considered a rookie next season.2. Joba Chamberlain, SP, Yankees, 22Chamberlain's already made a splash at the highest level, but his rookie status is still intact. Down the stretch he was a highly valuable reliever for the Yankees, but in 2008 he'll be in the rotation. He boasts a devastating fastball and one of the filthiest sliders you'll ever see. The concerns are his injury history and that, after pitching in relief for so long, he may have lost his feel for his changeup. He'll need to refine that third pitch if he's to thrive as a starter, but he should do that in time. The Yanks need Chamberlain to transition in a hurry, and he's got the stuff and makeup to do just that. For the rest of the list go here.

ROY Status Warrants a First Round Pick?
2007-11-16 19:31:00
Lou here again.  Matt from Fantasy Insider Online is having difficulties logging in and asked me post this for him.  Enjoy! ********** Earlier in the week, I took part in a fantasy draft that involved a whole slew of heavy hitters in the industry and which will be printed in a fantasy magazine to come out in January.  I know, I know? early, right?  The 2007 season ended just under a month ago, and already (with a lot of top free agents still out on the market) we are trying to look ahead to ?08.  Nevertheless, considering that the ?07 season was still fresh in everyone?s mind, it may help to explain something that went down during the draft that I thought to be a bit out of the ordinary.  With the 11th pick in the 1st Round, NL Rookie of the Year and Milwaukee 3B Ryan Braun was taken off of the board.  Please, do not get me wrong ? Braun was an absolute beast this past season and posted up per game fantasy numbers very similar to those of fantasy monster Alex Rodriguez.  However, ho...

MiLB Free Agent Team

The release of this year’s minor league free agents list got us to thinking: Could a team comprised only of those same free minor leaguers compete even with MLB’s worst teams? Pistons Are Looking Good This Season With Rookies Rodney Stuckey, Aaron Aff
2007-11-03 21:50:00
Wow am I excited about the Pistons this year! I am happy to say that the Rookies Rodney Stuckey and Aaron Afflalo, who are expected to crack the rotation this season, are great additions to the team. They can score, their not afraid to shoot the ball or attack the basket... Lets face it, these guys are fierce. Then theirs Cheikh Samb. Yes, don't forget to add Cheikh Samb to the family. His quickness, defense and rebounding is very much needed as well, especially after Ben Wallace left, taking with him the Pistons defensive edge and swagger. Yes, I say the team needs Cheikh now, and I think he's ready for the challenge. Come on! Don't send him off to the the D-League just yet! Besides what better experience can a Rookie have, than playing along side a group of All Star Veterans?Speaking of D-League, Mr. D-League graduate himself, Amir Johnson is back and I think I speak for all Pistons Fans when I say, I can't wait to see what he brings to the mix. Lets hope his ankle heals so...

Rookies progressing too slowly
2007-10-17 21:39:00
Wake me when the NHL has determined the next Calder Trophy winner.Looking at the early-season statistics, it's apparent not a single rookie is tearing it up like Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin did last year.As you could well expect, year-one candidates topping fantasy statistics include Sam Gagner, Patrick Kane, Andrew Cogliano and Jonathan Toews.Edmonton Oiler Cogliano leads the pack of freshman tortoises with five points and a plus 2 rating through six games. Chicago's Kane and Oilers' Gagner, much-heralded first round draft picks, lag a point behind, each logging four assists through five games.Only Chicago's Toews, who missed the Hawks' first two contests, is going at a point-per-game clip, recording a goal and two assists in three games. If you are looking for depth, Toews should be high on your list.Phoenix Coyotes' newbies Martin Hanzal and Daniel Carcillo are a surprise duo in the rookie point race, with three apiece. Carcillo looks particularly valuable to those of you c...
Lakers Rookies Looking Good
2007-10-13 21:30:00
Even though the Lakers seemed to be shadowed by negativity at the moment there are some positive things going on, if you can believe that. All starting with the Lakers 19th pick in Jarvis Crittenton. This kid looks good, very good! Not the best player on the defensive end of the floor, but he has got moves and looks to be a solid player in the NBA, if not now, very soon, but don't be surprised if you see this kid running the point as a starter this season (if he doesn't get traded that is).Another rookie standout so far is Coby Karl, with great shooting ability (especially from behind the arc) and size, this kid could be a good contributor for the Lakers off the bench this season and a potential starter further down the road. Like most rookies, Coby will have to work on his defense as he is not the best defender, but with the way the Lakers have been playing in the pre season the whole team needs to concentrate on defense. All and all, the future looks bright even with all the talk...
