Percival Return Will Cause Roster Crunch
2008-06-09 10:03:00 MLB.com's Bill Chastain writes of an impending Rays roster crunch. Closer Troy Percival can come off the DL Friday. Percival's replacement, Grant Balfour, doesn't deserve a demotion. He's out of options, and the Rays would have to sneak him through waivers to get him back to Triple A. Balfour did clear waivers in April. Given his situation and success this year, perhaps we can add Balfour to our Reliever Market list. The Rays acquired Balfour from the Brewers for Seth McClung last July. He's endured all kinds of injury problems but seems on track in '08. DRays Bay suggests keeping Balfour and either cutting Gary Glover or trading Jason Hammel.

State of the Bills Roster: The Recap
2008-06-05 01:25:00 Bills RB Fred Jackson (Photo Source) For nearly three weeks now, we have spent much of our time breaking down the Buffalo Bills' current personnel in our "State of the Roster" series. We, the Buffalo Rumblings community, have had some very intricate discussions about nearly every current Bill on the roster; I hope you've found the discussions as helpful in analyzing the roster changes post off-season as I have. Rest assured that we'll have content daily right up to training camp, but for now, here's a recap of each article involved in our State of the Roster II series: Quarterback: No more Edwards vs. Losman... right?Running Back: Written well before Lynch's run-in with the law.Tight End/Fullback: No more H-Back, but still not a well-defined split.Wide Receiver: Hardy must produce if aerial attack is to blossom.Offensive Tackle: Depth may be a concern, especially if Peters holds out.Offensive Guard/Center: Is Fowler the weak link of the starting O-Line? Defensive End: End...

Now that free agency and the Draft have been completed, and the Bills have infused their roster with new talent, it's time to repeat our process. Where has Buffalo gotten better? Where have they gotten worse? How will additions impact which Bills veterans remain on the roster? Why is Casanova on the roster
2008-06-03 02:07:00 I have nothing against Raul Casanova, but it's a waste of a roster spot to have a guy who is strictly a pinch hitter. There is no need for three catchers, none of them play a second position and all are very slow on the base path. Willie isn't using Castro as an early game pinch hitter and late in games if either Casanova or Castro get in scoring position a pinch runner is used. Casanova is a third catcher who should be in New Orleans waiting for a call-up when one of the full time catchers go on the DL. Both Tatis and Easley have practiced catching and are considered the emergency catchers which would get you by until the next day when Casanova could catch-up to the club.....The Mets need to fill the spot with an outfielder, Tatis and Easley can get plenty of playing time between Castillo knees and Delgado's bat. The only true back-up outfielder is Endy Chavez, Nick Evans has speed but is another infielder trying to play out of position and his bat isn't ready for this level ye...

John Clayton: Without Cap Redskins Could Be in Roster Depth Hell
2008-05-29 17:55:00 [Note by Skin Patrol, 05/29/08 1:28 PM EDT ] Promoted, enjoy. Edited very little. Thanks once more to CptChaosSidekick. John Clayton wrote an article on five of the best -- and five of the worst teams to be affected if there was no salary cap in 2010. The Redskins come in at # 5 on the teams sure to suck list. The Redskins are in great shape for the next two seasons, but 2010 could be tough. Eleven of their 22 starters are in their 30s, including five starters on the offensive line. Age is also creeping up on their defense. Cornerback Shawn Springs is 33. Linebacker Marcus Washington is 30. Defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin is 31. Linebacker London Fletcher is 33. Defensive end Phillip Daniels is 35. He goes on to say that finding replacements for older starters becomes harder and harder as teams will be trying to lock up future free agents much earlier than in years past. When the COB was unanimisly opted out by the owners, the Cowboys owner wasted no time in re-signing C...

One roster spot cleared: Robertson retires
2008-05-28 17:45:00 Remember a couple of days ago when we all pondered who would be cut to make room for the 4 remaining unsigned draft picks? Well the Dolphins have cleared one of the needed roster spots, at least according to the Palm Beach Post. They are reporting that undrafted free agent Kory Robertson will be placed on injured reserve, ending his rookie season before it even starts. The injury is unknown at this point, but Robertson was thought to be in a position to earn a spot on the 53 man roster because of his size (6'4, 345). Now, though, this might actually benefit Paul Soliai, as he has one less body to compete with as a backup nose tackle. This move might also mean that one of the unsigned rookies could be signed in the near future. We shall find out soon enough. [UPDATE] The Palm Beach Post has updated this story. Apparently, Robertson isn't being placed on the IR. Instead, he's decided football isn't what he wants to do and he has announced ...

2008 Jacksonville Jaguars Roster Breakdown: The Wide Receivers
2008-05-20 12:00:00 In recent years the Jacksonville Jaguars have faced a "yeah, but" problem with their offense. The solid running game, the productive line play, even with the quarterback problems, the sore thumb of the Jaguars offense is the Wide Receiving Corps. Despite having two first round draft picks in Reggie Williams and Matt Jones, the Jaguars have not yet found the heir apparant to Jimmy Smith, and even throughout the outstanding 2007 season lacked the receiver that guaranteed a double team and that would strike fear into defensive game planning. While the Jaguars went through an offensive explosion last season, there are still question marks surrounding the receivers. Will Reggie Williams repeat his 10 touchdown and 600 yards or was those merely outliers? Will Matt Jones wake up or stay in Jack Del Rio's doghouse? The offseason only added to those questions as the Jaguars charted an aggressive course to surround quarterback David Garrard with as many weapons...

2008 Jacksonville Jaguars: Historical Roster Breakdown
2008-05-12 18:00:00 The Jacksonville Jaguars offseason training activities start this week and with that begins the battle for positioning toward the final roster. The NFL only allows 53 players on the final roster and an eight man practice squad. I thought it might be interesting as be begin our position by position breakdown to look back at how many players we carry on our roster for each role. Teams are required to have their roster at specific levels through training camp. Because NFL Europa ceases to exist, teams have a hard cap of eighty players under contract. On August 26th, the roster must be cut down to 75 players. The final cut date is August 30th where the roster may only have 53 players. Tracking roster sizes for each position is actually fairly complicated. Players that are multi-functional, particularly on the offensive line, can throw off a count. For the purposes of this analysis, I will treat all offensive linemen together. Cornerbacks a...
A (Very Early) Look at Buffalo's 2008 Roster
2008-05-12 15:58:00 What's more fun on a Monday morning in May - from a football perspective, at least - than attempting to predict which 53 players from your favorite team will be lining up in front of your eyes this coming fall? That's exactly what we'll do this morning. With position-by-position breakdowns of the Buffalo Bills' 2008 roster just around the corner, I thought it would be prudent to take a look at the overall picture first, then break it down in the coming days. So this is how I see the 2008 roster shaking out. Keep in mind that in the grand scheme of things, this exercise means very little; it is a topic that should, at the very least, bring about some interesting philosophical discussions, however. Here's the positional breakdown. We'll avoid doing this depth chart style for now since, ultimately, I was playing a numbers game here. (It's not hard to figure out the depth chart, however.) Feel free to offer your own alternatives, pick apart my ...

Roster Turnover: Who's next to go?
2008-05-09 06:15:00 As it stands right now, the Dolphins currently have 83 players on their roster. The limit to enter training camp in July is 80. I would expect the next round of cuts to come following the next mini-camp, which is a voluntary mini-camp scheduled for May 23 and lasting through the 25. But who might be next to go? And I'm not talking about the undrafted free agents here. To my count, there are 15 undrafted free agents currently under contract by the Dolphins. Those 15 I'm excluding from this talk because they are, after all, undrafted players. So their expectations are far lower. And here's another interesting stat to just ponder. Of the 83 players currently under contract by the Dolphins, 45 of them were signed, drafted, or traded by this new regime during this off-season. That means that 54% of the roster right now was brought in by Bill Parcells and company. If you take away the 15 undrafted free agents, you're then talking a...

Breaking Down Buffalo's Roster Leadership
2008-05-06 16:41:00 Stroud will be counted on as leader in '08 (Photo Source) Leadership may be a bit of a cliche when it comes to discussing NFL rosters, but the fact of the matter is that good NFL teams have good leaders. Whether that leadership comes in the form of coaching, star quarterbacks or even punters, NFL rosters these days are so full of young players that it takes a certain type of leadership structure to get the most out of that inexperienced talent. Just look at how the leadership of the 2007 New York Giants milked outstanding play out of several rookies en route to their Super Bowl championship. With one of the youngest rosters in the league, where does Buffalo's leadership come from? That's the question we'll attempt to answer this morning. Due to the youth of the roster, especially at key positions, Buffalo's roster leadership structure is slightly different than those of teams like the Patriots and Colts, who have natural leaders at the quarterback positi...

Rangers continue roster shuffle
2008-04-30 13:29:00 The Texas Rangers' roster shuffling Tuesday brought to an end Jason Botts' fourth stint in the majors with Texas. He said he wants to leave the organization. Botts was designated for assignment and Chris Shelton was promoted to give the Rangers what they hope is a more productive right-handed bat. The club also put Hank Blalock on the disabled list with a partially torn right hamstring. He's expected to miss at least three to four weeks. Outfielder Brandon Boggs was brought up, and Ramon Vazquez and German Duran will platoon at third base for Blalock. The Rangers have 10 days to trade or release Botts, 27, or get him through waivers before he goes back to Triple-A Oklahoma.

Colorado Avalanche Injury and Roster Updates - April 25
2008-04-25 20:55:00 I just finished watching the media conference with Joel Quenneville following Colorado's afternoon practice and it was a little comme ci, comme ça for me. A bit of good, a bit of bad and a bit of "You've got to be f'n kidding me."Let's start with that last one and work our way up.Wojtek Wolski out for seriesWojtek Wolski is "out indefinitely" and likely won't be back for the series. That is a huge blow for the Avalanche as Wolski forms part of the top trio and was playing very well in the playoffs. He was in his groove and playing a solid puck possesion game while opening up lots of space for his linemates. He chalked up 2 goals and 3 assists in the 6 1/4 games he played so his production will certainly be missed.Peter Forsberg day-to-dayPeter Forsberg is still listed as day-to-day and is questionable for the game tomorrow. I don't have to expand upon Forsberg's boost to this lineup other than to say the Avalanche are 12-3 with him in the lineup and 2-6-1 without him (since M...
Here's some roster ideas
2008-04-25 18:25:00 I was always told that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over again and expecting different results. I do understand that the organization was hoping last year was an aberration and that the worst collapse in recent baseball history would motivate them, after all this is the same core of players that won in 2006. But just 20 games into the season you can tell that this team is preforming just as it did during that historic fall. So unless something changes it's crazy to expect different results......Carlos Delgado has become the poster child for the lackluster, anti-hustle persona of this team. I'm sure Willie talks to him and of course you take a different approach with different personalities (that's Mgt. 101 for any job) but I think it has come to a point where there needs to be a public display of discipline for the team's sake, Willie's status amongst his players and lastly the fans. Delgado is a leader in the clubhouse based solely on his past accomplish...

Roster move
2008-04-25 02:43:00 Brian Schneider came down with some kind of infection in his thumb and had to be sent to NY for treatment. Schneider will spend the night in the hospital receiving antibiotics, the Mets are hoping that he responds and they don't have to place him on the DL. The club elected to put Brady Clark on waivers and call up Gustavo Molina as the backup catcher to Raul Casanova. Clark had been in the dog house since being called out at the plate during the Brewers debacle, he was more then likely being waived when Alou was ready to return anyway. Now the Mets will get to see what they have in Molina since Casanova has been struggling at the plate until Alou returns. It's unclear what will happen to Clark, after looking very versatile in spring training he has failed to establish himself to start the season. Part of that has been lack of playing time but when he has had the chance he has failed to make an impact. I mentioned the play at the plate, then there a bloop hit that allowed a run he...

Roster Breakdown - a final look before the draft
2008-04-22 21:50:00 Here's one last look at the state of the roster before the draft. Denver has 9 draft picks and will probably add 3 or 4 free agents during or right after the draft. So I am guessing three or four guys will get cut before the draft to make room on the roster, although I guess they could wait and see if they make any trades during the draft that open up a roster spot(s). Denver will have to cut another set of players in July when they sign the rookie draftees. Based solely on roster numbers, Denver needs to add a kicker and a punter/kicker. They need to add at least 2 DT, 1 OT and one other OL. Based on talent and contract situations, I will guess that Denver adds a DB and at least one more DL, possibly two. They will also add some type of offensive skill position player (RB/WR), possibly 2 as well as possibly another offensive lineman. That makes for 6 "definite" and 3 "likely" additions and 3 "possiblities" for a total of 12. This matches up pret...

Roster Moves On the Horrizon
2008-04-18 23:17:00 The Giants made one of their easier roster decisions on Wednesday by bringing Vinny Chulk off the Disabled list and sending down Keiechi Yabu. Chulk brings a fresh arm to a bullpen that has been used pretty heavily through the first 2 1/2 weeks of the season and showed immediate dividends by throwing 2 scoreless innings of relief in Wednesday's game. They now have two more guys on the DL who are set to return in the next couple of weeks in Omar Vizquel and Noah Lowry. Vizquel's arrival will send Brian Bocock to Fresno, but it's unclear on who's spot Lowry will be taking when he makes his '08 debut, most likely in early May. Jonathan Sanchez and Kevin Corriea are in a battle for that last rotation spot and both have had their ups and downs. Corriea has the better era and has shown more consistency in being able to get deep into ballgames. As a matter of fact, Corriea may be the most economical of all Giants' starting pitchers with his pitch count. If Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum ...

Morrow Fills Bedard's Roster Spot
2008-04-17 00:47:00 I think everyone saw this coming, even though it isn't the right call. I would have rather seen a guy like Jon Huber, or even another lefty like Cesar Jimenez or Jake Woods.Brandon Morrow didn't find his control while pitching at AA West Tennessee, issuing 6 walks in 7.1 innings. He also had a minor bicep injury in his time there. I do not believe Morrow should be with the big club right now. How long can he really last with the fastball being the only effective pitch in his arsenal? Some pitchers can get away with this, but they have much better control. Morrow is all over the place, and unless he figures out how to throw his secondary pitches for strikes he's not going to be successful. Of course I hope he, along with Arthur Rhodes, prove me wrong and dominate. In other news, recently DFA'd Charlton Jimerson was granted free agency, but re-signed with Seattle anyway. He is back in the minor leagues and is not on the 40-man roster, meaning Jeremy Reed now has an edge at ...
Building a Roster a Contract Game, Too
2008-04-14 15:24:00 Crowell scheduled for free agency in 2009 (BuffaloBills.com) With the 2008 NFL Draft taking place less than two weeks from today, draft chatter is taking place at a more frequent pace than ever. In the case of the Buffalo Bills, we have already ironed out the team's biggest needs heading into the draft. But this time of year is more than about building a winning team - it's about planning for the future, as well. No, we're not talking about player age - we did that yesterday - instead, we're talking about contracts. Over the next two years (2008-09 and 09-10), the Bills have several key starters and depth players who are scheduled to become restricted or unrestricted free agents. Whether or not the Bills plan on making an attempt to re-sign these players, their uncertain futures after a year or two may force the Bills to build an unusual amount of depth at those positions. Here's a breakdown of prominent free agents - starters and key reserves alike - over the next...

Possible Roster Moves to Come
2008-04-14 07:21:00 After struggling in pressure situations for most of the season, Eric O'Flaherty was seemingly demoted from the later innings and appeared in what was supposed to be long relief for emergency starter Cha-Seung Baek. O'Flaherty gutted out 2.2 innings, but allowed 6 runs on 8 hits.I already wrote about how Seattle should start using Ryan Rowland-Smith as the teams LOOGY over O'Flaherty, and now it would make sense that to demote him even further. AAA Tacoma seems to be his next stop. In fact, there has already been a rumor that he has already been sent to the minors in favor of R.A. Dickey; this coming from a commenter over at Geoff Baker's blog that was supposedly in the clubhouse after the game.Such a move makes perfect sense because Seattle is short a long reliever after Cha-Seung Baek started in place of the hurting Erik Bedard. Having two long relievers on your team isn't the best strategy, and either Baek or Dickey would have to be sent down or waived after the bullpen sorts...

2008-04-13 16:05:00 Schobel one of a handful over 30+ Bills players (BuffaloBills.com) With the 2008 NFL Draft taking place less than two weeks from today, draft chatter is taking place at a more frequent pace than ever. In the case of the Buffalo Bills, we have already ironed out the team's biggest needs heading into the draft. But this time of year is more than about building a winning team - it's about planning for the future, as well. When an NFL player hits age 30, no matter how productive they are, it is a smart business move to start thinking about grooming their eventual replacement. Unless we're talking about Brett Favre or something. Fortunately, the Bills are one of the youngest teams in the NFL. Even after adding a few veteran pieces to the roster to provide the team a nice balance between veteran and youth, the team still only employs seven players who will be over 30 by the start of the regular season. Buffalo's Over-Thirty Crowd Two of Buffalo's over-thirty crowd are ...

Building a Roster a Numbers Game, Too
2008-04-12 16:41:00 Parrish & Co. need running mates at wideout (BuffaloBills.com) With the 2008 NFL Draft taking place literally two weeks from today, draft chatter is taking place at a more frequent pace than ever. In the case of the Buffalo Bills, we have already ironed out the team's biggest needs heading into the draft. But this time of the year is more than about building a winning team - it's about putting together a roster with proper numbers that will allow a team to best put together a 53-man roster come September. How influential is the "training camp roster" (size: 80) on the draft-day process? Clearly it's not close to being the biggest factor considered when a selection is made, but where the Bills are lacking severely in numbers - and they have positions in that precise situation - could dictate how many players the Bills choose at each position. So where are the Bills lacking in numbers? There are four positions that need at least three more players just to match las...
