Nearly two weeks after Ian Kennedy was put on the disabled list, the New York Yankees' rotation may no longer have a spot for him. Darrell Rasner has been the team's most consistent young pitcher, and Joba Chamberlain, while far from stellar in his tentative first steps as a starter, has not pitched badly. In his nine games this season, Kennedy posted a 7.41 earned run average and an 0-3 record, a far cry from the performances last season that earned him a spot in this year's rotation."I try not to think about it," said Kennedy, who was 1-0 with a 1.89 E.R.A. in three starts last season. "All I can do is get healthy, and whatever happens happens. Otherwise it'll drive you crazy."Kennedy has a strained right latissimus muscle and bursitis under the shoulder blade. He threw 30 pitches — mostly fastballs and changeups — in a bullpen session Monday and reported that he did not experience any pain.

Joba Chamberlain will take his next step toward the starting rotation Wednesday, and it might not be too long before the hard-throwing 22-year-old finds himself starting for the New York Yankees. That's because Ian Kennedy's strained right lat muscle might open the door for the Yankees to hand Chamberlain his first big-league start as soon as Tuesday according to the New York Daily News. Kennedy left Tuesday night's game after three innings with the same injury that sidelined Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada for a few days during spring training. Joe Girardi announced after the game the Yankees will turn Chamberlain into a starter. The Yankees will have him throw more pitches to entend him before putting him into the rotation. The Mets are in need of a starter for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. There has been some speculation that Adam Bostick will be brought up because he's already on the 40 man roster and has options. The Mets could move a reliever (Smith or Sosa), bring up Bostick for the day and then re-assign him to bring up Matt Wise. Wednesday nights' game in Pittsburgh is going to be a big one for Barry Zito, maybe his biggest of his 1+ seasons' with the team. After being sent to the bullpen to miss a start and get a chance to clear his head, Zito returns to the rotation to make his first start and appearance since April 27th when he gave up 8 runs in 3 innings to the Cincinnati Reds. Zito has a few things going for him as he is trying to get back on track. He will be pitching in a spacious yard and although the Pirates have been scoring a lot of runs lately, this is one of the weaker offenses and best pitching match-ups Zito has faced all season. Loaiza, who earned the final spot in the rotation this spring but quickly lost it to Hong-Chih Kuo, was back starting and turned in five solid innings in the Dodgers' 10-inning, 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies. He gave up two runs in five innings and lowered his earned-run average to 4.15. Honeycutt said the reason he and Manager Joe Torre tinkered with the rotation was to find a way to get the most out of the bullpen.
