Wednesday News Round Up
2009-09-23 16:10:00
The Department of Housing and Urban Development is starting a huge public housing study, assessing the condition of the nation's public housing and what it would cost to bring all the units into good physical condition. Sorely overdue, leaders say. Atlanta is seeing a rise in crime. But the Atlanta Journal Constitution says it's not as bad as it once was, especially considering they've demolished all their public housing. Crime rates at those developments was once 37 times the national average. Still, the rise in city wide crime makes me wonder if they're undergoing what happened to Memphis. Mark Ishaug, head of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, wrote a great editorial for the Trib on the connection between homelessness and...
Which comes first: poverty or spanking? Friday news round up
2009-09-18 22:10:00
Photo by Art by Heather on FlickrThe LA Times reviews a new Duke University study that tries to untangle spanking your kids from being poor. The study shows that poor children are way more likely to be spanked, but it also makes them more aggressive and slows their development. It sort of asks the question - are kids spanked because they are poor and then become poor because they were spanked? The study says parents often spank because they themselves are dealing with challenges - like being a young or single parent or living in poverty - and they also might reflect that poor parents are preparing their kids for a life full of these same challenges. The UN and the...
Invisible government as Octopus: a famous quote round-up
2009-08-29 23:43:00
"There exists a shadowy government with its own Air Force, its own Navy, its own fundraising mechanism, and the ability to pursue its own ideas of national interest, free from all checks and balances, and free from the law itself." Dan Inouye United States Senator for Hawaii "The real menace of our Republic is the invisible government which like a giant octopus sprawls its slimy legs over our cities states and nation. At the head is a small group of banking houses generally referred to as 'international bankers.' This little coterie...run our government for their own selfish ends. It operates under cover of a self-created screen...[and]seizes...our executive officers...legislative bodies...schools...courts... newspapers and every agency created for the public protection."John Francis Hylan (April 20, 1868 - January 12, 1936), Mayor of New York City from 1918 to 1925."I'm going to be so much better a president for having been at the CIA that you're not going to believe it."George...
Wednesday news round up: the church of public housing?
2009-08-26 16:10:00
Photo by Sarah Jane RheeGreensboro North Carolina is all a-twitter over the local housing authority is applying rules on religion. The Fair Housing Act prohibits organizations receiving HUD funds from "engaging in inherently religious activities."In Greensboro, officials have interpreted that to mean that residents can't use common areas for Bible study or a voluntary religious service. What do you think? Is it a violation of residents' freedoms? Or is it ensuring government-owned property isn't used to spread religion?U.S. housing, confidence data points to recovery - WaPo says we're shaking off this recession and housing numbers prove it.Looking to divide the pie more fairly - Philadelphia public schools are considering a measure close to my heart: changing the way we fund...

Prison: the new public housing? Thursday news round up
2009-08-13 16:00:00
Photo by Tim Pearce The Poverty in America blog at change.org riffs off of Barbara Ehrenreich's NYT op-ed. There's 2.3 million Americans living in public housing. There's 2.3 million Americans living behind bars. We know that many people who end up in prison come from rough neighborhoods. And there's no shortage of people who like to blame crime on public housing residents. So is it much of a leap to say prison is a form of public housing? Most of the young people I meet have a friend or relative in prison and many expect to spend at least a night or two there themselves. Maybe the real question is: who is better off?Public housing banning policy tears families apart -...

2009-08-05 09:00:00
The digital world heard some buzz in the tie ups section recently. And it interestingly ranged from mobile to a web publisher to a digital agency. Here’s a small round up giving with the noteworthy points. Virgin Mobile and Nimbuzz Tie up The partnership essentially brings Virgin’s brand closer to its conusmers through an instant messaging solution. Vchatter – the multi brand WAP chat app, will allow Virgin Mobile users to chat in the very familiar Vbytes (Virgin Mobile’s WAP portal) environment. The tool basically let’s users use multiple IMs like Yahoo Messenger, Gtalk, MSN Messenger, Facebook, Skype etc. via the Vbytes portal for free. (Source) There will also be a second phase to the partnership where Nimbuzz will add a lot more Java enabled apps to Virgin’s prepaid handsets. A Comic Con Video Round Up
2009-07-27 10:18:00
Thanks to wonder that is YouTube, the best seat in the house for Comic Con 2009 was not front row center in the hallowed hall that is ‘H.’ Rather, it was in front of your computer, thanks to some friendly neighborhood super-fans who were kind enough to share the magic that is the ‘Con’ by uploading videos of some of your favorite panels. Many of which we’ve linked to after the jump. • DEXTER • DOLLHOUSE • GLEE • HEROES • LOST • SMALLVILLE • SUPERNATURAL • TRUE BLOOD TRAILERS • CLONE WARS Season two trailer • DEXTER Season four trailer • SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND trailer • STARGATE UNIVERSE trailer
Comic Con: Friday Round Up
2009-07-25 19:11:00
Since theTVaddict.com is essentially an operation of one, there was quite a lot that we didn’t get to at Comic Con. Which is why we thought we’d share some of the TV related tidbits we missed. Just a few. • Kiefer Sutherland discusses the possible end of 24 [HitFix] • The nerds of THE BIG BANG THEORY commune with the nerds of Comic Con [EW] • Dominic Monaghan Joins FLASH FORWARD [E! Online] • Ron Moore talks BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and CAPRICA [MoRyan] • Check out a first look at SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND [YouTube] • EUREKA gets picked up for season 4 [Zap2It] • Adrianne Palicki isn’t sure she’ll return to FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS [Ausiello]
Is there a Poverty Draft? Friday news round up
2009-07-17 17:00:00
Poverty Draft? -  Thought-provoking opinion piece. What's the real difference between joining a gang and joining the military? It's a short read, so give it a look and tell me what you think. HUD announces $113 million available for housing transformation, community revitalization -  A new program called "Choice Neighborhoods" will offer funds to "challenge public, private and nonprofit partners to extend neighborhood transformation efforts beyond public housing and link housing interventions more closely with school reform and early childhood innovation."A Home-Spun Safety Net - Another op-ed, this one about how difficult it can be to use the "system" to get help. A family who has renamed TANF (which stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) to stand for "Torture...
Should guns be allowed in public housing? Friday news round up
2009-07-10 17:45:00
Photo by Svadilfari There were so many interesting things to share, I couldn't wait until Monday. House Panel Adopts Amendment Allowing Guns in Public Housing - According to the article, this amendment likely won't make it to the to the final version of the bill. Introduced by Georgia Republican Tom Price, it would bar any housing authority from banning or restricting legal gun ownership so that residents can protect themselves. To me, the thought of guns being allowed in a place so densely populated with children is insane. What do you think? Do residents have the right to protect themselves with firearms? Or should guns, legal or illegal, be kept out of government-owned housing?Chatham Residents Fight to Protect Legacy -...

Bribes, slaves and recycling... Monday morning round up
2009-07-06 17:00:00
Shorter roundup this morning. Going to try doing it twice a week, so check back Wednesday for more of this week's housing news. Indicted Chicago developer made big profit on city deal - the Suntimes' front page story today reminds us, once again, that developers and politicians aren't above the influence of hot dollars. The article also notes Boender nearly redeveloped a "blighted property near Midway airport." That's near LeClaire Courts. In New York's Public Housing, Spreading the Gospel of the Recycling Bin - Great NYT article and video about teaching residents to recycle in NYC's public housing. Our Weekly TV Twitter Round-Up
2009-05-24 17:04:00
As you may have ascertained from our recent (and we should add, constantly being updated) Ultimate Guide to TV on Twitter , this TV Addict has a tiny little problem: Our Twitter addiction is quietly giving our TV one a run for its money. Seriously. There is something oddly addictive (okay, and borderline stalkarazzi) about being able to plug directly into the minds of our favorite TV actors, showrunners, journalists, bloggers and readers alike. Which is why we’ve decided to add a new weekly feature to theTVaddict.com: This Week in TV Twitter. A compilation of our favorite fun, informative, sometimes pointless but always entertaining roundup of tweets from in and around the world of television. “Glee Music is perfect music for running. If you see me running in my neighborhood waving jazz hands in the air…just ignore me.” GREY’S ANATOMY creator Shonda Rhimes (@shondarhimes) makes us feel better about our very own GLEE obsession. “Next season on T...

Chicago Round-Up. Everything But the Cupcakes.
2008-10-29 04:56:00
We are back from Chicago! Sadly. Unfortunately. Waaa. We had a blast and kind of might have considered moving there a few times (might still be, as a matter of fact). We packed a lot in (in the course of the weekend and in our suitcases) in the short time we were there, which basically means we ate a lot. We really did. This post doesn't even include any of the Cupcake Crawl; which will be posted very soon!Gino's East PizzeriaWhen we arrived in Chicago, Sues's sister and fiance were working, so we decided to wander around Michigan Ave. (their apartment is dangerously close to it) and noticed Gino's East. Sues remembered hearing it was a must-try for Chicago pizza, so we wandered in. It was super busy for a Friday afternoon and there was graffiti everywhere. We're talking on the walls, on the floor, on the tables, on the chairs. Legit, the whole restaurant was pretty much covered. We understood the appeal, but it was kind of dirty and gross. Anyway, though neither of us are huge...
BET Awards Round Up...
2008-10-20 19:47:00
The reports and rumors are flying out of the ATL as the BET Hip Hop Awards went down his weekend. From what I hear, there are plenty of highs and lows and foolery! T-Pain replaced Katt Williams, but not for the reason BET wants you to believe. Lil' Wayne dropped a bomb about a baby martian on the way. Salt-N-Pepa reunited and absolutely killed it! But where did they find Lady Rage? Ciara and 50 Cent wouldn't even look each other's way, hmmm.Read all about it @ Necole Bitchie and Straight from the A!More scoop to come... The Indian Recipes Round-Up
2008-10-13 15:02:00
This is one event that I almost regretted hosting because of many glitches that happened along the way. I was contacted by an ex-colleague currently with Warner Bros who wanted to promote a movie she was working with. She also promised movie tickets and various give-aways. It seemed like a fun idea and I happily agreed. But what do we do when people make empty promises and not only let you down but also tens of others who trust you and what you said? I have tried my best to communicate and follow up, but to no avail.Bottom-line: I promised some gifts for the participants and its very likely that I won't be able to keep that promise. It feels horrible and I sincerely apologize for that. To make things slightly better, I will be randomly picking 2 names from the list and send them a surprise gift with apologies since its the movie merchandise that I had originally promised.I did, however, manage to send movie tickets to most of the early birds. Again, my apologies to Jayashree for not...

Presto Pasta Nights #83: The round-up
2008-10-06 04:39:00
Thanks to everyone who contributed a delicious dish to this week’s Presto Pasta Nights. As expected there are fabulous ideas from all around the world, but this week Europe is under-represented. Let's start with the fun! I got the first entry from Kitchenetta of Got No Milk. She fell in love with the recipe just of Tomato Basil Cream Pasta the moment she discovered it on another blog. This pasta dish offers fresh flavors and a comforting blend of healthy and simple ingredients, cashew gives the sauce a creamy base. Daphne from More than Words shares the recipe for Plum Sauce Char Siew Fettuccine with us. Roast pork from the freezer and plum sauce from the pantry are the ingredients of this wonderful pasta dish. Mrs Ergül from Mrs Ergül in the Kitchen serves Beef Meatballs and Farfalle in Tomato Sauce. A classic combination which is always convincing. Weekend Herb Blogging #148: The Round-up
2008-09-08 21:15:00
It's always fun to write the round-up, but I always have some initial difficulties: Some entries ended in the spam-filter, some entries were very late.. Allow me some word for future hosts. Don't send your entries at the last moment. Sometimes emails take longer than you think. I got this morning three emails, the last 12 h after deadline. You find people who like to cook with herbs and unusual plants all over the world: Ning from Heart and Hearth in Manila, Philippines gives us an understanding of seaweeds. Although it does not look very appetizing at first sight, but the nutrition-packed quality of Stir Fried Seaweeds (Hai Cai) is convincing enough to try. Maria from Organically Cooked grows non-hybrid tomatoes in her garden in Hania, Crete. This special variety gives away its inner values as wonderful Heirloom Tomato Fritters.
