Chicago Recruiting Round-Up
2010-11-12 02:11:00 Now that most of the schools have their Letters of Intent in hand you're seeing releases about most of the big prospects. While the very big prospects like Dai-jon Parker and Mike Shaw signed with other schools (Vanderbilt and Illinois respectively) these young men are expected to help schools in the future. Here's a quick run down of the four classes. (Note: Chicago State isn't included because their class hasn't been officially announced yet.)When listing each school's classes I've tried to highlight the local players and give a quick run down of what each class will bring to the table next season and beyond....

This is Charlie's recap...Cubicle Dad told us about this amazing race happening on the Lakefront in early November: The Hot Chocolate 5K. My wife, Myriah, and I decided to sign-up and see how much fun we could have. It would be my first official 5K, although I had run the Illinois Marathon relay last May, which amounted to a 10K. We arrived at Union Station for the Expo in the late afternoon on Friday. Parking was close, and the Great Hall was easy to find. You know, that great big room...

News Round Up - Thursday, Oct. 21
2010-10-22 05:06:00 A couple recruiting news and notes that I thought were worth exploring today. The hype around DePaul continues to grow. Oh sure, the Blue Demons are still being picked to finish 16th in the Big East, but there is a good feeling around the program since the hiring of Oliver Purnell. The Blue Demons got the commitment of a ESPNU100 recruit when Shane Larkin, the son of former Cincinnati Red shortstop Barry Larkin, committed to the Blue Demons. Also, DePaul's success with Blue Madness the Blue Demons have decided to open the Blue-White scrimmage up to the general public. The game is on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at McGrath Arena. It'll probably feature some more good basketball considering the quality of the...

News Round Up - Thursday, Sept. 23
2010-09-24 03:06:00 I like doing news round ups on Thursdays. It makes the week feel more complete. Not much to report this week, but a couple interesting tidbits about Chicago State scheduling, a Big Ten preview for a former player and a tribute to Alumni Gym.I found it very interesting that Slam Magazine got a Cornell grad, Jon Jaques whose photo is there to the right, to write the Big Ten Preview this season. They couldn't find a competent writer from all of the prestigious academic universities in the Big Ten? I'm sure Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism or Indiana's National Sports Journalism Center probably would have something to say about that.Still, Jaques did put the obligatory "Northwestern might go to the NCAA...

UID Round-Up: All The News on AADHAAR : For IT, Against It?
2010-05-26 13:43:00 It’s been quite a while since we wrote about the latest developments on the UID front. The Unique Identification project might just be the biggest changer in the way we lead our lives. Recently, the UIDAI (Unique ID Authority of India), lead by ex-IT Czar Nandan Nilekani, was renamed Aadhaar. It also has a new logo, the halo of the Sun bearing the imprint of a thumb. In the words of Mr. Nilekani : “We wanted a name that had a national appeal, could be recognised across the country and resonate in different languages, besides being easy to remember and speak. Aadhaar is a door to open all other doors.” While initially there people assumed that there would be one major IT vendor, who’d take care of all the tech requirements (we’d also blogged about biggies like Microsoft, Google among several Indian companies showing interest), new reports confirm that the UIDAI has split the project into many small ones and distributed them to speed up work. No single IT cont...

Swami Nityananda Sex Scandal News Round Up
2010-05-24 22:08:00 The following is a quite brief but useful selection of Indian press articles. They suffice to give a sense of the unfolding of the Nityananda sex scandal saga. It is a great pity that Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors are not being held to public accountability. He is vastly more powerful and influential than Nityananda. It does India no credit, nationally or internationally, that she occasionally nets in a few minnows and not the tiger sharks. The enormous public reaction to the Nityananda case furnishes a picture that makes two issues extremely clear. The first is that blind faith in gurus down the milennia has been made a matter of wide public debate. The other is that new generations are beginning to throw off the shackles of the past. The question that remains is whether Indian shall ever become the great democracy that she could be. These factors are well brought out, if rather wordily, by the South Indian lawyer. See my note, and the video links, at:
Weekly Movie News Round-Up: May 17-21
2010-05-21 05:57:00 I follow all the news so you don't have to... Here's what you may have missed: (1) Megan Fox Booted from Transformers 3. She says it was her choice to leave. Michael Bay and Paramount are suspiciously vague about it. Not terribly surprising given her verbal spat with Bay after Transformers 2 came out. I think this is a smart play - sorry, Megan. Better hope Jonah Hex makes mad money this summer. (2) David Fincher Directing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake? This could be very cool. Disney is wooing Fincher pretty hard right now after McG dropped out - what a switch! Disney better hurry because word is that there's another 20,000 Leagues movie in the works...
Round-Up of Convoluted Census Orders From Across the USA
2010-05-19 00:57:00 Today the order came down the bureaucratic pipeline: If you've been to a house six times and haven't gotten a CI with a household member, go six more times. Six. More. Times. "Take good notes," they told us. "If you run out of space, fill out an Info-Comm." I can't even say I'm surprised anymore.
Weekly Movie News Round-Up: May 10-14
2010-05-14 04:23:00 I follow all the news so you don't have to... Here's what you may have missed: (1) Brad Bird is confirmed to direct M:I-4. I love this choice. One of the great things about the Mission: Impossible franchise is how flexible it is. All three movies have had a different director, each with their own style, which makes each movie its own special thing. As many of you already know, I am a die-hard fan of JJ Abrams' M:I-3. Though he's only producing the fourth film (still a good sign), he and Cruise have picked Brad Bird to helm it. Bird is best known for his work in animation (The Iron Giant, Ratatouille, The Incredibles), and this would be his...
Mobile Round Up: 3G Hits 3 Billion, Aircel – Facebook, Jet Airways Go
2010-05-11 10:02:00 3G Hits 3 Billion We have already told you about the huge amount of money that the Govt. will be making from the 3G Auctions. Now with 148 rounds of bidding completed, the bids for a single set of 3G mobile spectrum licences in India has reached 134.74 billion rupees ($3 billion) on the 26th day of an auction according to the government data. The base price of the licenses were set at 35Billion INR and now they have grossed a lot of revenue already. This is not all over as the the government plans to sell four such licences (three from the auction and one set to state-run telecoms firms). Facebook Updates Via SMS comes to Aircel Aircel has started providing both it’s prepaid and postpaid customers with Facebook updates via SMS. Users can now see status updates, make comments, poke, and add friends without using GPRS or any mobile-internet service.Tata has already been providing their users with Facebook via SMS service for a long time now. Fridays Transfer Rumour Round-Up
2010-05-07 11:25:00 With the Premier League season nearly finished and the summer transfer window only around the corner, many players will be linked with a move too and from Manchester United. Each day there will be different rumours, here are the pick of todays. Man United defender Nemanja Vidic has been linked with a move away, but today he has tried to put those rumours to bed. Vidic has been quoted as saying: "I can't do anything about it.? "I have said many times I am here and I have shown on the pitch my commitment. I enjoy playing. Nothing changes, I am here." One player who won?t be going anywhere is Jonny Evans after he signed a new five-year deal, he had been linked with a move to Real Madrid. ?I am delighted to have signed a new contract,? Evans said. ?I?ve supported Manchester United all my life and it?s a great honour to be able to continue to wear the badge of this great club. I?d like to thank the staff, players and fans for their continued support in my development.? Ben Foster...

Weekly Movie News Round-Up: May 3-7
2010-05-07 04:56:00 I follow all the news so you don't have to... Here's what you may have missed: (1) Chris Nolan's third Batman film hits theaters July 20, 2012. Mark your calendars now. (2) Spierig Brothers directing Power of the Dark Crystal. How cool is this? A sequel to The Dark Crystal nearly three decades after the first film was released. The Spierig Brothers directed the futuristic vampire flick, Daybreakers, from earlier this year and have shown that they know how to wield a camera on a scrappy budget. This sequel will be live action and in 3D, with Jim Henson puppets and minor CGI. Already a must-see. (3) X-Men: First Class gets a director and a release date. Matthew Vaughn...
Google Round Up: Google TV, Maps Plus Orkut, Transliteration – 5 New
2010-05-05 15:09:00 Google TV Google has plans to introduce an Android-based television software for developers that will help more content from the Internet to be made available on TVs and other devices. The technology is designed to open set-top boxes, TVs and other devices to fetch more useful content for the users from the Internet. Companies like Sony Corp, Intel Corp and Logitech are already very interested in this new Google technology which is planned to be revealed at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco on 19 and 20 May. Google is currently running very limited tests with a television search service that uses a new Google technology to allow users to access and search channels from the Internet as well as Dish’s conventional programming. Maps Plus Orkut No doubt, Google is still trying hard to give Facebook a stiff competition by adding new features from day to day to their social network Orkut. The latest addition is the integration of Google Maps to O...

Telecom Round Up: 3G Prices Cross 10K Crore, Highest GSM Growth In Orissa
2010-05-05 12:40:00 The mobile space seems to be hotting up as the 3G auctions crossed another landmark and GSM growth numbers reported seemed very encouraging. Here is a lowdown on both these fronts: 3G Auction crosses 10,000 crore mark The 3G auction bids crossed at important landmark. The bids moved up to Rs 10,748 crore after 21 days of bidding and 122 rounds since April 9th. Mumbai still leads the bids at Rs 1,816 crore followed by Delhi at Rs 1,755 crore. These pricing are being termed as pretty high by many analysts and there is still a couple more phases of the bidding to be complete. The Government at current bid value could gross as much as Rs 42,992 crore assuming that all the available slots are taken. Orissa Clocks Highest Growth for GSM Subscribers The GSM penetration is driving deep into India and the clear sign is when C Circle states like register the highest growth among all the telecom circles in the country. Financial Results Round Up – Bharti & 123greetings
2010-04-29 08:59:00 Bharti Q4 Profits Dip By 8% Things are not going very good for Airtel as it’s Fourth Quarter profits of the current financial year have gone down by 8%. Taking a look at the figures, Bharti Airtel’s net profit fell to Rs 2,055 crore for the three months ended March 31, from Rs 2,239 crore a year earlier. There may be many reasons behind this drop some of them being falling call rates and the slow pace at which Bharti has added customers this year compared to it’s rivals. Call rates have been dropping since a long time and Airtel has competitors like TATA Docomo and Vodafone. The average rate per minute for Bharti stood at Rs 0.47 in Jan-Mar quarter from Rs 0.63 in the same quarter last year, a decline of 25 per cent. Also, Bharti had just acquired SA based Zain telecom and when it was looking to integrate its $9 billion purchase of Zain Telecom’s African assets, the profits dipped. Bharti Airtel’s average revenue per user was at Rs 220 in the fourth quarter, ...

2010-04-12 07:54:00 BSNL Introduces 3G Video Streaming As usual Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is again on it’s track of overwhelming it’s subscribers by providing them with cutting-edge technology at the earliest. BSNL has plans of introducing a video streaming platform for it’s 3G customers in Orissa using which subscribers (customers) can access different live television channels like DD (national), DD (Oriya) and B4U initially by making a video call. BSNL plans to expanded this list of channels by including other channels like OTV, ETV (Oriya) and Kamayab among others. The tariffs of this new service are however yet to be decided by BSNL. 3G Bidding – Day 2 Review After all the pre-3G auction drama, the heat seems to have reduced now. Not much increase in bidding prices was seen on the second day of the 3G auctions. The auctions started with an overall bidding price of INR 3500 crores for the three circles and at the end of Day 1, the total bid price figure...

2010-04-01 12:48:00 Bharti Inks Zain Deal Last week we told you about Bharti securing funds for the Zain acquisition. And now we have reports that Bharti has finally acquired Kuwait based Zain Telecom’s African assets at an enterprise value of $10.7 billion. And with this acquisition, Bharti Airtel becomes the fifth largest wireless and mobile solutions provider in the world, with a subscriber base of about 179 million spread across 18 countries. Zain Africa alone has a huge mobile operations base in 15 countries with over 42 million customers. Tele-Subscriber Base Touches 600M March saw a steady growth in the number of telephone subscribers in India which is said to have increased by 3.22 percent from a figure of 581.97 million in January to a massive 600.69 million at the end of February. Putting Employers 'Out of Their Misery:' A Round-up on the New Un
2010-03-30 00:05:00 -By Bret Jacobson Yesterday, President Obama recess-appointed SEIU and AFL-CIO attorney Craig Becker, along with union attorney Mark Pearce to the National Labor Relations Board, making the "bi-partisan" board a tool of union bosses. [NLRB Chairman Wilma Liebman is an attorney formerly employed by the Teamsters and Bricklayers' unions.] With only one Republican Board member to three union-friendly Board members, even a modicum of "neutrality" on the Board is finished. The following is a round-up from around the web [my emphasis added throughout]: From the American Thinker: I think it's safe to say that the NLRB is now about as impartial a body as Robespierre's Revolutionary Tribunal that condemned tens of thousands to the guillotine during the French Revolution....
