Gay Marriage Roundup
2008-06-19 06:22:00 Despite my opposition to court-mandated gay marriage, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight some developments this week from California and beyond. First, some personal stories of the first-day of marriage ceremonies in San Francisco are chronicled at a website called the “Experience Project.” The energy inside was very different from the energy outside. Most of ...

The Best Weekly Roundup
2008-06-15 13:19:00 In case you missed it: Here's what we covered this week on The Best of Everything: How great is kettle corn? Great enough to take at least part of the blame for the downfall of American society. Hollywood more and more gets it wrong; Disney is part of Hollywood. And the last time Disney got it right was also The Best Disney Cartoon. Have you gotten your link in? Why not? Don't you want a chance to get a free t-shirt like read.dance.bliss-- who not only got a t-shirt but was also named The Best Blogger? It was The Best Classic Arcade Game, and it would make a great movie. And speaking of Hollywood getting it wrong, here's my advice for who should be the 12th Cylon.
Tuesday night roundup
2008-06-11 06:01:00 BY ADAM RONIS Lastings Milledge hit a two-run homer with two out in the top of the ninth inning off Matt Capps to give the Nationals a 7-6 win. Milledge has started slow with five homers and 25 RBIs and isn't in a great lineup, but he has 10 steals and will get better as he sees more major league pitching. Ron Belliard is expected to see more playing time and he started at second base. He went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. Not only does Nate McLouth have 14 homers, but he hit his 20th double. He also stole his seventh base and he should be more aggressive on the basepaths as the season progresses. Ryan Doumit was a guy I targeted at catcher because he also gets time at other positions. Unfortuantely, I didn't land him in any drafts. He will see most of his time at catcher and is a good hitter. He went 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. He is hitting .345 with seven homers and 18 RBIs. Jon Rauch picked up his 13th save. In a league where I can use only one reliever, ...

2008-06-10 00:00:00 Several hands-on iPhone 3G reports from after the WWDC 2008 Keynote are out, and as you might expect they?re all saying pretty much the same thing. Steve Jobs Keynote Live Roundup [Live Blogging The Live Blogs]
2008-06-09 18:30:00 This morning at 10AM Steve Jobs will take the stage at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference to unveil the iPhone 2.0 and its new App Store, along with any number of other untold goodies. Will the iPhone still be worth jailbreaking? Will better iPhone location-awareness really change your life? Only the Stevenote will tell. Unlike our brave brothers in gadgetry, we Lifehacker editors will not be packing into a small room with hundreds of sweaty nerds to hear the Jobsian edicts in person. We will, however, be sitting home in our pajamas appreciating all the work that tech reporter soldiers on the front lines will be doing. In pants. For your convenience, we’ll be summing it up here as they go. Photo by Gizmodo. Starting right now and going through Jobs’ 10AM keynote on this very post, we’ll be live blogging the live blogging from the likes of Gizmodo, Macworld, MacRumors, Ars Technica, Engadget, TechCrunch, and TUAW, highlighting the good stuff, and giving th...
Weekend Roundup: Mini-Camp Thoughts
2008-06-09 06:15:00 Well the final mini-camp has come and gone. The Dolphins now have a couple of OTA practices left this week and then they hit the road for some vacation before training camp opens in July. So for today's "Weekend Roundup," I figured I could just talk a little bit about what the media reported from these 5 mini-camp practices. QB TALKHere's all I'll say about the quarterbacks: It's impossible to really know who had a good day and who had a bad one. These camp reports are very subjective - meaning there's no real way to compare the performances of the 3 quarterbacks. Opinions and bias can easily influence writers to report that "quarterback X" had a good day while "quarterback Y" struggled. For example, it might be reported that John Beck threw a great pass to Davone Bess. Considering Bess's place on the depth chart, the reporter might say that John was working with the 3rd team. But that doesn't necessarily mean John was working against...

Saturday Video Roundup: Sum some summertime
2008-06-07 16:31:00 Technically we’re still a few days away from Solstice, I know, but … you should see the weather here in Colorado. Trust me, folks - it’s summer. So to sort of pre-honor the arrival of sun season, SVR today presents a few vids to put you in a surf, sand and sky kinda mood. Up first, the supremely cool Scot Sax’s Bachelor Number 1 project with my all-time favorite summer song, “I Am the Summertime.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K56VtsEaeVg Up next - it wouldn’t be a summer set at all without The Beach Boys, would it? Here’s some great 1967 footage of “Good Vibrations.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dEGmd-3Gg-s And what’s our favorite thing to do in summer? That’s right - water skiing with Belinda, Charlotte, Kathy, Jane and Gina! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZfIxT2V67_I Here we have a bit of conflict working. The video is gray and industrial and not-summery, but damn, there haven’t been many more...

No Roundup Today
2008-06-06 19:56:00 Monday morning I woke up with a fever of 100.4 and haven’t really shaken off the slight fever feeling since, so my reading of blogs has been sporadic at best. I could be a bitch and say none of you wrote anything worth my notice, but it’d be an assoholic lie. Instead, I will entertain/bore you with some random things that happened this week when I wasn’t lying on the couch soaked in my own man sweat. The big thing for me was the announcement that the Democratic Party has taken John Edwards and Barack Obama’s pledge of not taking donations from lobbyists to heart and made a sweeping change for the entire party. What that means — in theory — is that the only group that the Democratic Party has to now answer to is “We, The People”. This kind of integrity is reason I am a fan of both Edwards and Obama. You may have noticed the blog being streamlined. I had some complaints about loading time and decided to get rid of most of the clutter. No...

Early Thursday roundup
2008-06-06 00:21:00 BY ADAM RONIS Another reason to hate the Yankees. The comeback cost me a Dustin McGowan win and B.J. Ryan save. Like I needed any more incentive. Matt Stairs went 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs. He has seven homers and 21 RBIs. Jason Giamroid, I mean Giambi, hit a pinch-hit walkoff two-run homer off Ryan. Giambi has 12 homers and 31 RBIs. McGowan was shaky all game. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, five runs, walked two and struck out five. He has a 4.26 ERA, but he misses a lot of bats. He throw hard and needs to cut down on his walks. I'd buy low. Ryan blew his second consecutive save. He has been excellent until recently and you have to be a little concerned about his arm in his return from Tommy John surgery. He allowed three hits and three runs in 2/3 inning. Can we please stop overrating Chien-Mien Wang now? Enough with the Cy Young talk. He has been issuing a lot of walks lately. He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed five hits, seven runs -- six earned -- walked...

Wednesday night roundup
2008-06-05 03:38:00 BY ADAM RONIS Can you believe that Mike Mussina leads the Yankees in wins? That would be understandable if it was three wins, but it's nine. He went six innings and allowed five hits, one run, one walk and struck out six. He is 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA. He has issued just 11 walks, which is part of the reason for success. He has been fortunate to face a lot of offenses that are slumping when he faces them. I would sell high or spot start him. Brett Myers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but lost it on a two-out double by Joey Votto that gave the Reds a 1-0 lead. In my Sunday column, I said Myers is an excellent buy-low candidate, especially for a team at the bottom of the standings that needs to take a chance. He has now had two consecutive excellent starts. He did walk six, however, but he allowed just one hit, one run and struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings to take the loss. Edinson Volquez was just a bit better. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits, two walks an...

Draft Roundup
2008-06-04 12:21:00 Tomorrow is draft day! ESPN's coverage begins at 1pm CST. We'll live-blog it here at MLBTR, just for the fun of it. Here are today's draft-related links. Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein projects the top 30. Plenty of inside info here. Jonathan Mayo has another set of top 30 projections. He's also got a host of rumors; I'll let you click over to read them. Roto Professor chatted with Baseball America's Jim Callis. Dejan Kovacevic dismisses the idea of the Pirates picking Pedro Alvarez as a P.R./fan-pleasing move. If they pick him, it'll be for baseball reasons. The Reds have their #7 pick narrowed down to four players. Baseball America's John Manuel has all kinds of rumors, and the article is free to read.

Tuesday roundup
2008-06-04 06:17:00 BY ADAM RONIS Roy Halladay pitched six innings? No, that's not a misprint. He threw 102 pitches and was pulled, but he was in long enough to win. He allowed six hits, two runs, walked one and struck out three. He is 7-5 with a2.94 ERA. Aaron Harang hasn't pitched as bad as his 2-8 record indicates. The Reds don't score when he pitches. Allowing three runs in six innings in Philly is a good game these days. He has a 3.86 ERA and 78/20 K/BB ratio, so he's good buy low candidate if an owner is harping on his record. Brad Lidge issued two walks and a hit in a one-run game and escaped unscathed for his 15th save. Kaz Matsui went 4-for-4 with two runs and is batting .278. He's a useful middle infielder because he steals bases and scores runs. In his second start since missing five weeks with a strained groin, Wandy Rodriguez was very good against the Pirates. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing five hits, one walk and struck out three for the win. He is 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA. He s...

Trak.in May Roundup: Statistics and more?.
2008-06-02 17:43:00 May was the anniversary month for Trak.in blog and it was a bumper month from stats point of view as well. Trak.in registered high level of traffic this month. Here is a look at stats for May: Trak.in blog saw close to 115,000 unique visitors and 336,000 pageviews, a record of sorts. This kind of pageviews were really unexpected. The factor that has surprised me over last couple of months is the increase in pageviews per visit which stood at nearly 2.94. Trak.in has always been clocking close to 2 pageviews per visit, but this time it has jumped to nearly 3. I am really not sure of the reason for this jump.
Sunday fantasy roundup two
2008-06-02 07:44:00 BY ADAM RONIS Josh Hamilton hit his 15th homer and has 63 RBIs. He is batting .328 and I think he's legit. I wouldn't see high unless you get an offer you can't refuse. The Rangers have been hitting and the ball flies in their ballpark during the summer. Milton Bradley is off to an excellent start. He is hitting .322 and hit his ninth homer and had three RBIs for 34 on the season. Adrian Gonzalez is a case where you can't worry about a player's home ballpark. He hit his 16th homer and has 50 RBIs with a .290 average. Aaron Rowand has a nine-game hitting streak and hit his eighth homer and drove in run 35. He is hitting .340. Sell high. Randy Wolf had a good start going six innings, allowing four hits, one run, one walk and struck out five in a no-decision. He's worth owning. Trevor Hoffman blew his third save of the season and took the loss to fall to 0-4. He allowed four hits, three runs and one walk in 1/3 of an inning and has a 5.68 ERA. Tim Lincecum left the game in line f...

Weekend Roundup: All Jason, All the Time
2008-06-02 06:15:00 I hope you all had a great weekend. Unfortunately, the weekend headlines were yet again dominated by non other than Jason Taylor. As you all know, Taylor held a press conference in South Florida on Sunday. And what was reportedly supposed to be Taylor's time to come clean and openly demand a trade turned into just another twist in the saga that is Jason Taylor's future plans. So let's start with some quotes from the Jason, which include the revelation that 2008 is likely Taylor's last season before he retires from the game of football: “I’m disappointed when you’re away and people are having a chance to take shots at you for certain things and you don’t have a chance to really set the record straight." “Do I want to be traded? I want to win in ‘08, and that’s what I want to do. I told the Dolphins from Day One that was my intentions. My intentions right now are to play one more year. I tried to give the Dolphins an opportun...

Sunday fantasy roundup
2008-06-01 23:51:00 BY ADAM RONIS If I write it, it will happen. Well, I'm not that good, but it seems like most of the guys I wrote about in Sunday's column are already heating up. It seems like I lit a fire under them and maybe they have my computer tapped. One guy is Mark Teixeira, who homered for the third time in four games. He has eight homers and 40 RBIs, and yes I do love him. Brian McCann hit his 10th homer and is looking like one of the best catchers. If you stashed away Jay Bruce and waited for his arrival, good job. He went 2-for-3 with two runs, his second homer, two RBIs and a walk. He has already walked six times and struck out just once. He his hitting .591. He's legit, but if you can find someone who thinks this guy is the greatest player ever, especially in non-keeper leagues, you should think about it while he is scorching. You can say what you want about Adam Dunn and his low batting average and plethora of strikeouts, but he is a good bet for 40-100. He hit his 15th homer and hs...

Transaction Roundup: Athletics, Medders, Pena, German, Brower
2008-05-31 11:02:00 I woke up to a ton of small transactions this morning, so let's lead with them. In MLBTR-friendly transactions, the A's designated Lenny DiNardo and Kevin Melillo for assignment. The team made a bevy of other moves, though, recalling Travis Buck, Brad Ziegler, and Carlos Gonzalez, placing Joey Devine, Mike Sweeney, and Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day DL, and activating Kiko Calero and Eric Chavez from the DL. Brandon Medders, recently DFA by the Diamondbacks, has cleared waivers and has been assigned to AAA. Brayan Pena, recently DFA by the Braves, has been claimed by the Royals. Rangers RHP Franklyn German has refused an assignment to AAA, and will hit the free agent market. The Reds traded RHP Jim Brower to the Cubs for cash considerations. He has a double-digit major league ERA in limited time over the past two seasons. Joe Pawlikowski writes for River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog, and can be reached here.

The Roundup; Andy MacPhail, Oriole News and Thoughts
2008-05-30 20:40:00 Recently on the Orioles.com website there was a Q&A posted in which Andy MacPhail answered a few questions from fans. I would not say that there was anything earth shattering that was divulged and it covering a myriad of topics from drafting players to Daniel Cabrera to both the performances of Matt Wieters and Jake Arrieta in the minors. The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec also looks into what Andy MacPhail can possibly do at the trade deadline. Despite the start by Baltimore, I see many changes coming on the horizon and the team on the field may not be necessarily the one that finishes up the season. It sounds like even he was surprised the team's solid start:"Look, I was pretty forthright in painting a pretty bleak picture, so I am surprised," MacPhail said. "I would have thought that after the things that I did, that we would struggle more than we have. I think this group is doing it out of tenacity. They're laying it all out on the field and that's all you can ask for. And the things ...

Draft Roundup
2008-05-28 16:01:00 All kinds of good draft info surfacing today. Let's take a look. MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo projects the top 30 picks. College closer Andrew Cashner moves up the rankings to the Rangers at #11, among other changes. Mayo has even heard a rumor that the Marlins could consider Cashner at #6 instead of Kyle Skipworth. Back on May 16th, Baseball America chose the Tigers for Cashner at #21. Mayo sees the Rangers at #11 and the Yankees at #28 as possibilities for Boras advisee Gerrit Cole. MiLB.com has compared Cole to Kyle Farnsworth. Baseball America suggested Cole could slip to the Cubs at #19 or the D'Backs at #26. Back to the Rangers...beat writer Evan Grant sees them springing for Eric Hosmer or Shooter Hunt. Jim Callis notes that raw first-round bats (Aaron Hicks for example) often do not pan out. Will the Mets stick to slot this year?
