Royal Mail and the 40 Thieves
2007-11-06 20:46:00 It was recently my birthday, I get the odd thing from relatives, in many ways not that fussed but there we go, I am getting old :) Still I got home from holiday and there was a delivery card indicating I had something which did not have enough postage on it. Apparently 1.06 worth of postage. Okay I thought perhaps it is a parcel or something, easy to perhaps incorrectly apply the required postage for something like that. But... read more

Royal Mail talks
2007-10-16 12:44:00 It seems that the postal strike could be coming to an end after CWU representatives and Royal Mail have agreed to talks. There have been a program of rolling strikes over the summer, crippling mail deliveries, and ever since late September the majority of postal staff have been on strike continously.I have every sympathy with the CWU, given the failure of the Government to support the postal industry in the way it bailed out Northern Rock, and the obsession with competition.Last week Tony Benn wrote on this subject in the Guardian, and made the point that other public services such as the police run at a loss.

2007-09-07 17:22:00 A former Royal Mail employee is seeking compensation for race discrimination and unfair dismissal, despite taking more than 18 months off work over a five-year period. Royal Mail told the Birmingham Employment Tribunal that parcels delivery driver Jivan Sansoy had received a number of warnings before he was sacked in October last year for poor attendance. Sansoy claims he had taken time off because of the racist attitudes of colleagues, domestic problems, stress and depression. The national postal service denied the race discrimination allegation, and added that it had not always been satisfied with the explanations Sansoy had offered for taking excessive time off and had made strenuous efforts to help him. Appearing for Sansoy, Chris Andrew said the former Royal Mail employee had been picked on at work, prompting a race discrimination claim, despite never making a formal complaint. The tribunal was told that Sansoy had been absent from work from April until October ?...
Royal Mail staff raise £2.6m for charities through payroll giving
2007-08-24 10:00:00 Royal Mail staff raised £2.6m through payroll giving in the last financial year ? up almost £440,000 on the previous 12 months. About 50,000 Royal Mail employees now make monthly payroll contributions ? at a rate of £295 an hour. An extra 7,000 new participants have been recruited to the scheme over the past year alone; between them donating to more than 850 charities. Royal Mail was among the first organisations to set up payroll giving in 1989, and its scheme is one of the largest in the UK. The organisation has set itself the target of raising £5m a year through payroll by 2013. Kay Allen, head of social policy at Royal Mail Group, said: "Each and every one of our 'payroll posties' should be congratulated on their efforts ? they are part and parcel of an incredible success story. "With their support, we've already reached the half-way milestone for the £5m target, and will continue to work hard to generate even further revenue for the hundreds of charities that...
Royal Mail delivers operating loss for the first time in six years
2007-08-16 17:47:00 New financial figures show that Royal Mail has delivered an operating loss for the first time in six years. The worse-than-expected figures are likely to be used as ammunition in the postal conglomerate's ongoing battle with unions about pay and thousands of potential job cuts. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has given the Royal Mail less than four weeks to reach an agreement over postal workers' pay and conditions. The CWU called off the latest round of proposed postal strikes ealier this month after talks with Royal Mail, which confirmed both parties would reach an agreement over the workers' pay and modernisation dispute by 4 September. Two weeks of continuous disruption has already been caused to mail services across the country, following strike action last month. Royal Mail reported an operating loss of £12m last year after profits of £197m in 2005-06.

2007-08-15 12:55:00 The Royal Mail has less than four weeks to reach an agreement over postal workers? pay and conditions, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) announced last week. The CWU called off the latest round of proposed postal strikes last Thursday after talks with Royal Mail, which confirmed both parties would reach an agreement over the workers? pay and modernisation dispute by 4 September. Two weeks of continuous disruption has already been caused to mail services across the country, following strike action last month. But in a letter to its members, CWU confirmed that no more of its members will strike from now until the first week of September, when an agreement is hoped to be reached. Both parties signed a statement during a meeting last week, outlining what the next steps will be, including: that both parties commit to talks on all the issues between them, hosted and facilitated by the TUC. Both sides commit to reach an agreement by 4 September. that, during this...

Royal Mail denies plan to abolish final salary pension scheme
2007-07-25 12:00:00 The Royal Mail has hit back at union claims that it is planning to abolish its final salary pension scheme as part of a plan to scale back a £6bn shortfall in its pension fund. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said Royal Mail had received copies of a document which proposed increasing the age at which staff can retire with a full pension from 60 to 65 in 2010. The proposed changes would affect the pensions of 170,000 postal workers. Jon Millidge, director of employee relations, however, wrote a letter to CWU stating that the document was "out of date" and denying that any decision had yet been made on pension provision. He said: "The company has already made it very clear that our number one priority is to protect as far as possible the pension provision for our existing employees. "You accept, and have asked us to cost out for you, that for the defined benefit scheme to be kept open to new recruits, then our existing people would have to work longer and pay more into...

What does the Royal Mail do?
2007-07-11 08:53:00 What business model does the Royal Mail actually fit into? Is it one of the last great public services, or a commercial company competing with other private firms and losing market share rapidly? Unfortunately, it is actually both of these things and it can’t square the two parts together, hence the strike action. The battle isn’t about jobs and pay it’s about a company that is neither one thing or another. Senior management is faced with the impossible task of meeting public obligations while watching the most profitable parts of their business fall to private competitors. Change is essential, and the focus now should be on finding ways to protect the Royal Mail’s public service role, while easing the transition to full competition. The union has a point about the aggressive way change is being managed and about the large bonuses paid to bosses. But strike action can only make the cuts, when they come, even worse. Royal Mail candidate misses rejection letter
2007-07-01 21:03:00 There were red faces at the Royal Mail?s headquarters on Monday when Sally Billingsworth arrived to take up her new job. "I had applied for the role of Lost Post Analyser," explained Ms Billingsworth. "I went through all the interviews, selection panels and aptitude tests but didn?t hear anything back. So I assumed that I must have got the job and just turned up." It seems that the rejection letter that Sally should have received had, ironically, been lost in the post, and thus at the start of last week there were two new Lost Post Analysers waiting to start their jobs. "Well, you know,... [Visit website for more]

Eversheds extends Royal Mail deal to offer tribunal services for eastern En
2007-06-20 15:29:00 Law firm Eversheds has been appointed by Royal Mail to provide tribunal advisory services in the eastern half of England. Eversheds has been providing a range of legal services to the organisation for the past eight years. The two-year contract will be delivered from Eversheds? offices in Nottingham and Norwich. The approach developed by Eversheds is based on a model used by its in-house claims management team, which has been shown to improve efficiency and enhance the consistency of its advisory services, the company claims. Simon Tytherleigh, partner and human resources specialist at Eversheds, said: ?The Royal Mail has an excellent reputation as a best practice employer, and our system for managing the tribunal process has been tailored to meet the specific needs of the business.? Royal Mail is currently facing strike action in a row over a below-inflation pay offer.

Royal Mail seeks Acas meeting with Communication Workers Union hoping to av
2007-06-18 13:32:00 Royal Mail has offered to meet the Communication Workers Union (CWU) ahead of a proposed strike through talks at conciliation service Acas, the BBC reports. The company said it wanted to explain its position to the CWU, and was not making any concessions. Last week Royal Mail chief Allan Leighton insisted he could not afford to improve the 2.5% pay offer, despite a vote for strike action from the staff. The CWU has yet to set dates for a series of planned national walkouts. ?Royal Mail is contacting Acas, not to make any concessions in our position, but to try to explain to the union once again the very serious challenges the business now faces in an open, competitive market,? a spokesman said. If a nationwide postal strike does go ahead, it would be the first since 1996.
Communication Workers Union accuses Royal Mail of attempting to provoke str
2007-06-14 17:31:00 The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has accused Royal Mail of attempting to provoke strike action rather than looking to negotiate. The CWU has not yet announced dates for strike action, but Royal Mail chairman Allan Leighton has reiterated he cannot afford to improve the 2.5% pay offer, despite staff voting for strike action. ?The money on the table is the money on the table because that is what the business can afford,? Leighton told the BBC. The CWU has written to Leighton laying out the terms of a potential agreement to end the dispute. It elaborates on how the union feels the business can move forward with the support of the workforce. Dave Ward, deputy general secretary, said ?We have provided Royal Mail with a practical and reasonable solution, and are determined to negotiate further. It is outrageous that the business is ignoring the clear message from its workforce and appears to be provoking a postal strike rather than resolving one. ?Royal Mail can...
Communication Workers Union members working at Royal Mail vote to strike ov
2007-06-08 12:30:00 Postal workers have voted to hold their first nationwide strike in more than a decade. Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) yesterday voted almost four to one in favour of industrial action over pay. The Royal Mail has offered a 2.5% pay rise, while the CWU is holding out for a 4.8% increase. A series of walkouts will now be held by up to 130,000 CWU members unless a compromise is reached. CWU deputy general secretary, Dave Ward, said: ?This yes vote shows clearly that Royal Mail workers have rejected the company?s business plan, the company?s leadership and the unacceptable pay offer. ?Royal Mail leaders say they listen to people; this is the clearest message they have ever had. Royal Mail has to listen and return to serious negotiations.?
Royal Mail chief urges staff to "consider all the facts" before voting on s
2007-05-29 10:45:00 Royal Mail's HR chief has urged the organisation's staff to "consider all the facts" before deciding whether or not to vote for strike action. Last week, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) began sending out 130,000 ballot papers to Royal Mail staff asking them to support industrial action. The ballot has been called in a row over pay and the organisation's business plan. The CWU is angry at the offer of a 2.5% pay increase, and claims 40,000 jobs are at risk as the organisation modernises and work becomes increasingly automated. But Tony McCarthy, Royal Mail's group director for people and organisational development, said market competition meant that change was necessary. "Competition is taking revenue away from us and we've got to compete properly with other businesses," he told Personnel Today. "The organisation is changing, and change is often difficult for people. But they have to remember that things are a hell of a lot better now than they used to be. "Whe... |
