Author Donates Royalties to Stop Dam Building
2008-01-03 13:09:00 India has undergone many dam projects as have many other developing countries. Foreign investment, flood control, irrigation canals, and energy production are the cited reasons for dam construction but critics claim that the devastation to the human population living in the flood zones and the ecological damage, as well as statistics stating historical dam projects provide significantly less energy output as expected, encourage extreme resistance to dam construction. In India, massive protests in the form of hunger strikes, and donations of book royalties from famous Indian writer Arundhati Roy* keep this debate in the news.Book Review: "Power Politics", 2001, author Arundhati Roy, Indian female writer (also author of famous novel "The God of Small Things"This book is a series of essays exploring water dam building and energy production in India, political response to September 11, 2001 in expectation of a U.S. war with Afghanistan, and free speech. One essay from the book is called "...

Lawyers for both parties must now go back to court on January 15 to ask for a dismissal. The trial was set to begin March 3.The suit dates back to December 2006 when Newton-John claimed that she was not compensated for the long-term sales of the soundtrack album. Universal tried to have the case tossed out based on non-proper notification and lack of jurisdiction over the company in California.Judge Maureen Duffy-Lewis ruled against Universal on both counts, saying that jurisdiction applied as they regularly sent royalty payments to Newton-John, among others, in California. The judge also showed proof that the company had been properly informed of...

It would be the union's first strike in nearly 20 years.Steve Skrovan, a screenwriter for the Fox show "Til Death," said after the meeting that a strike is all but inevitable."We've never been more united and we are willing to deal -- and our decision makers are at the table," said Skrovan. Royalties - Doom And Gloom or...?
2007-10-26 11:52:00 I would be off my game if I didn't at least mention the very important, some would say shocking, announcement Ed Stelmach made announcing that, yes, Alberta will increase oil sands royalties by January 1, 2009.The increases mean that the money Alberta collects from the energy business could be a staggering 20% higher than the original forecast for 2010, which would equate to a $1.4-billion increase into the province's treasury. What started it all?A report by Alberta's provincial panel said royalties had not kept pace with world energy markets, that all projects in the booming oil rich region should be paying more. "Albertans do not receive their fair share from energy development.""The energy industry has been a phenomenal driver," "It not only affects Alberta ... It's going to set the direction for where this industry goes and where Alberta goes the next five to 10 years." Greg Stringham, vice president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum ProducersAlberta has been negati...
Calling For Hike In Oil Sands Royalties
2007-09-28 04:03:00 "A government-appointed panel reviewing Alberta's energy royalties called Tuesday for the oil-rich Canadian province to increase its total take from the energy industry by 20 percent a year, or roughly $2 billion Canadian (US $1.97 billion; €1.42 billion)."How will this affect the Albertan Economy?1. Albertan will see more more of the Oil Sands revenue in infrastructure and perhaps more rebate cheques.2. Oil companies worry that rising royalties may slow or hinder production. With the oil prices rising and Alberta's 175 Billion barrels of oil, second only to Saudi Arabia, many companies will pay the royalties to participate in what may be the biggest economic boom of the century.READ MORE
Clear Channel asking artists to waive royalties again?
2007-09-04 19:16:00 The newish blog TalentFilter is reporting that Clear Channel is once again after artists' royalties. This time it's in connection with a contest that L.A. station KYSR (Star 98.7) is sponsoring for bands. The contest promises the winner a spot on the station's Star Lounge CD, a Star Lounge Concert at the Guitar Center Studio, and $10,000.It's only in the legalese of the contest rules that the real "prize" is revealed -- it appears artists must waive their royalties to participate and allow Clear Channel to use their music in nearly any form. Here's an excerpt of the language:...BY SUBMITTING THE SONG, YOU HEREBY GRANT TO THE COMPANY A PERPETUAL, WORLDWIDE, NON-EXCLUSIVE, ROYALTY-FREE, SUB-LICENSABLE (THROUGH MULTIPLE TIERS) RIGHT AND LICENSE TO USE, PUBLISH, REPRODUCE, DISPLAY, PERFORM, ADAPT, MODIFY, DISTRIBUTE, HAVE DISTRIBUTED AND PROMOTE SUCH CONTENT IN ANY FORM (INCLUDING ANY TITLE OF THE VIDEO AND YOUR NAME AND LIKENESS), IN ALL MEDIA NOW KNOWN OR HEREINAFTER CREATED, ANY...
Jakarta demands royalties hike from Freeport mine
2007-08-16 01:49:00 The Indonesian government is seeking higher royalties from production at US mining giant Freeport McMoRan's Grasberg mine in the easternmost province of Papua."On the matter of royalties from gold, we are asking that they be raised to 3.5 percent," said Witoro Soelarno, the head of mine inspection at Indonesia's energy ministry. The current royalty level for gold mined by Freeport's local unit according to a 1991 contract stands at 1 percent. Freeport Indonesia is the country's largest taxpayer.Soelarno said the company should pay a higher royalty to the Indonesian government as the purity level of gold mined in the past few years had improved to one gram per every one tonne of ore.Critics accuse Freeport of not giving enough to the people of Papua in return for the mine. They allege the mine causes pollution and that the military's protection of the site leads to human rights abuses.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

How To Copyright Your Music To Protect Your Future Royalties
2007-07-30 20:02:00 Many musicians confuse copyrighting music with registering music; these are two different things. According to the law in the United States, once you have written or recorded your music in a permanent form, it is automatically copyrighted. Of course, it might help to first understand what it means to copyright music. A copyright is a certain legal protection that is offered to those who compose creative works, whether those works are art, music, or the written word. The U. S. Constitution states there are limits one can place on the amount of time the work is exclusively protected. If you copyright music, this means you (and you alone) have the right to use your work or allow others to use your work. You also have the right to distribute copies of your work. Whether those copies are in the form of written or sheet music or recorded music to the public as well as the right to perform your music for the public. There is something called Fair Use (more commonly known as ...

Copyrights, Royalties & Sharing by Evan Palmer
2007-07-07 03:06:00 A way around increasingly rigid copyright protection mechanisms or overdone policing efforts is to expand on the idea that Canada has used regarding taxing blank cassettes and tapes. We can keep tabs on how often a song or album is downloaded and pay out to the artists based on that up to a maximum. This type of royalty acknowledges the new internet medium, its mobile adjuncts and the decentralization and commons philosophy while still rewarding the artists who create the works. If successful, a regime of this type would lead to reciprocal agreements in other jurisdictions up to the stipulated maximum. Thus, as an example, a specific fee on internet connectivity would pay into a fund that would be used to pay out royalities to artists per time period per jurisdiction. This compensation scheme may actually pay out more to artists than the traditional method. The other tremendous advantage of it is that it would encourage the growth of small groups and unknown artists while it reduces t...
