Loyalty, Royalty, and Chicago's Own Gala Events
2011-04-30 22:32:00 After reading about Maggie Daley, her support of worthy children's causes, and the example of courage she shows every day in overcoming the challenges of cancer, I have decided that she is worthy of the respect that people might show a queen
Drink Like Royalty: Royal Wedding Wine Available in Chicago
2011-04-22 22:01:00 Mario Testino/Clarence House Press Office via Getty Images This week the wine that will be served at the Royal Wedding was announced. According to Decanter, Prince William and Kate Middleton will serve Pol Roger NV Champagne at their ceremony Friday, April 29. Surprisingly, it's actually an affordable bottle--and available in Chicago! Binny's in Lakeview (3000 N. Clark) carries the Pol Roger for $49.99--and I picked up a bottle today. So, girls (and guys), if you're getting together for a little Royal Wedding gala, as I am next Friday, you can drink like royality. I'm hoping the champange tastes good with the Panko crusted pan fried fish and chips that my friends are making for the occasion. I'll be sure to report back...
RedEye Royalty: One Year Later
2011-04-06 04:51:00 I don't remember why I began using Twitter, I couldn't tell you who I followed or what I was even tweeting about. I remember the first tango with the social media whirlwind was with Yelp. I met people, tried new places that I never been to before (a feat that becomes increasingly difficult with every passing year spent in Chicago), and learned how to navigate through the landscape. I've made lots of friends from social media, and I don't mind saying that because you can't do that unless you've got an open mind and a taste for ideas and experiences that are not your own. Yes, I remember my first tweetup. It was @FaithandWhiskey, I had just finished some delicious pho'...

ITAT Rules Against Microsoft In Software Royalty Tax Case
2010-11-01 09:30:00 Microsoft finds itself on the wrong side of a ruling by the Delhi Income Tax-Appellate Tribunal(ITAT) stating that “The income received for supply of software is assessable as “royalty” as a copyright subsists in a computer programme and it is also a literary as also a scientific work.” According to a BusinessLine Report in May 2008, this decision could be worth about Rs.700 crore – including interest. While the Redmond based software giants considers sales of its licensed software to be business profits which are non taxable in India since it does not have a permanent establishment here. From January 1st, 1999 Microsoft scrapped its earlier business model under which it dealt with Indian Distributors on a principle-to-principle basis which means that “No liability will arise on accrual basis to the non-resident on the profits made by him where the transaction of the sale between the two parties are on a principal to principal basis.” Under the new ...

RedEye Royalty Bottomless Mimosa Brunch
2010-06-10 01:46:00 Growing up, parents, teachers, and educational television programming all expound on the virtues of breakfast and its role as the most important meal of the day. Over the past couple of years, the rising surge in Sunday brunch threatens to oust breakfast from its position as our most celebrated meal and the RedEye Royalty bottomless mimosa brunch reinforced this movement. While breakfast distinguishes itself with its cornucopia of cereals, yogurts, eggs, and other classic hits, brunch relates more to camaraderie and good company (along with unlimited mimosas!).Last month, RedEye Royalty descended on Furama in Uptown to partake in discovering the wonders of dim sum brunch. This past Sunday at Deleece Grill Pub, we took full advantage of the idyllic weather...

RedEye Royalty Take on Red Cube Project
2009-12-23 21:13:00 (Cross-posted to my blog, Knightly Musings.) The Art Institute of Chicago is currently running a city-wide art project. Five hundred red cubes (about 4 inches high/wide/deep) have been hidden throughout the city. Anyone who finds a cube can visit 500-Ways.com and enter the password printed on the cube. The website will then give them an art project to complete, and upload their results to the website (or drop it off at the information desk at the Art Institute). At last count, there were still 191 cubes waiting to be discovered. Cool, right? One of my fellow RedEye Royalty, Connie, was fortunate to find a cube. Appeal Refused in Record Verdict Gas Royalty Case
2008-05-23 17:08:00 In an active day for the justices, West Virginia's Supreme Court has let stand a nearly $405 million verdict awarded in a Roane County class-action lawsuit, MetroNews reports. In what may be a record verdict for the state, the judgment involves around 8,000 plaintiffs who sued over natural gas royalty payments. Punitive damages account for two-thirds of the verdict. The defendants include NiSource. "President and CEO Robert C. Skaggs, Jr. said the company is surprised and disappointed with the West Virginia Court's decision not to hear its appeal," MetroNews reported."The Court's decision to not even address the substance of an appeal in a case of this significance, particularly in light of the $270 million in punitive damages awarded at the trial court level, is unprecedented and contrary to the most basic principles of fairness. We firmly believe in the merits of our position and will continue to vigorously pursue our arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court," he said in a statement.

Inside American Royaltys Security Bubble
2008-04-30 06:36:00 by Mike Ferner Washington, D.C. The First Family Security Bubble was nearly pried open for a moment last Friday; but in the end Disneyland remained blessedly undisturbed. On a particularly warm spring evening, Laura and Jenna Bush alighted from a squadron of black SUVs at the Borders book store in downtown Washington, D.C., right on schedule at 7:00 pm. Flanked by Secret Service agents, they went inside to an area set up for authors to sign books yes, sign books. The two Bush women have co-authored a 32-page childrens book, Read All About It, the story of Tyrone, a youngster who is good at everything in school but reading. In line to have her copy signed, and more importantly, to get a moment to deliver a letter to the authors, waited Gilda Carbonaro, the mother of a U.S. Marine Sergeant who died a quite terrible death in Iraq. After nearly an hour wait, Gilda approached the table to proffer her book for a signature. So that they wouldnt se...

He kindly answered some MLBTR reader questions today for our Rumor Royalty series. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MLBTR: How do you perceive the relationship between Wayne Krivsky and Walt Jocketty? Fay: On the surface, everything is fine, but I don't see what happens behind closed doors. I think if the Reds win this year, you could very well see the arrangement continue. Jocketty said as much when I did a story about the two this spring. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MLBTR: Any idea what the Reds offered for Joe Blanton and/or Erik Bedard? Fay: Baltimore wanted Jay Bruce, the Reds weren't going to do that. I believe they offered a package that included Homer Bailey and Joey Votto, plus a third pla...

Rumor Royalty: Geoff Baker (Mariners)
2008-03-07 11:36:00 Geoff Baker kindly answered our Rumor Royalty questions despite vacationing in Hawaii. Geoff covers the Mariners beat for the Seattle Times. He also keeps a blog here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MLBTR: How do you see the first base situation turning out? Richie Sexson is entering a contract year and his production has been below average. Do you think anyone else in the system could see time at the cold corner? Baker: If Sexson struggles out of the chute again, then fails to rebound by mid-May, I could see a chain reaction of moves that could lead to someone like Raul Ibanez or Jose Vidro being moved over to first base. A lot will depend on the progress of Jeff Clement. If Clement shows he's ready for a big-league job, it gives the Mariners plenty of flexibility where Sexson is concerned. Clement himself could be moved over to play first base. The reason I said Ibanez or Vidro f...

Todd has kindly agreed to answer a handful of reader questions for the series. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MLBTR: Does signing Ryan Howard to a long term contract make sense for the Phils? Zolecki: It depends what price we're talking about. Before and after winning $10 million in arbitration, Howard is seeking major money. Maybe in the $200 million range. The Phillies are not the Yankees or Red Sox, so if they commit that type of money to one player, it almost certainly would cost them elsewhere. That could mean Cole Hamels going elsewhere. Or Brett Myers. Or others. I'm not sure the Phillies want to do that, and get stuck in a contract they hate like the Rangers and A-Rod. ---------------------------------------...

Rumor Royalty: Ken Davidoff (Mets)
2008-02-13 16:57:00 Newsday's Ken Davidoff recently answered some reader questions as our Rumor Royalty recipient for the Mets. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MLBTR: Both Pedro Martinez and Oliver Perez are eligible for free agency after this season. What do you expect to happen with these two, and can you estimate their next contracts? Davidoff: I expect Pedro to re-sign with the. Mets. I expect Perez, as a Boras client, to explore free agency and probably leave the Mets. Perez's contract will largely be determined bt the quality of his '08 season. It could go to extremes, either way. Pedro will sign, let's say, a 2-year extension for 24 million. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MLBTR: How high are the Mets on Yu Darvish? How often do you hear his name amongst Mets officials? Any guesses on his price tag if he...
