2008-04-23 07:18:00 BMW names Tom Purves CEO of Rolls-Royce BMW has announced that Tom Purves will become the new CEO of Rolls-Royce, effective July 1st. Purves, 59, will be taking over the position from Ian Robertson, who in turn will be taking over Stefan Krausewill's position as head of BMW's sales and marketing. Purves actually started his career with Rolls-Royce as an apprentice engineer, and most recently headed up BMW's North American sales subsidiary. According to Automotive News, Purves joined BMW in 1985 and ran Land Rover, Mini, MG and Rover before taking his position in North America in 1999. Purves will reach BMW's mandatory retirement age of 60 in November, but it remains unclear if the retirement age was fully responsible for the move. Rolls-Royce has no such mandatory retirement age.

Notice at 1:13 how Royce uses his signature "I look like I have cerebral palsy" leg kick combined with dropping down and back to make the grossly overweight Akebono drop like a mishandled stack of cinder blocks into his guard (just tossing this in, but good use of the knee to block the punch near the end). Almost a year after the debut of the original concept, Rolls Royce announced that a convertible version of the 101EX, dubbed the Phantom Drophead Coupe, would enter production. Officials have now unveiled the final Phantom variant, also based on the 101EX and aptly named Phantom Coupe, ahead of the car's world debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

The new car follows in the footsteps of the new Drophead Coupe, which is a convertible version of the Phantom. The large driver-oriented grand tourer is powered by the company's 6.75-liter V12 that produces 453 horsepower, 531 pound-feet of torque and has segment-leading fuel economy. A 25 percent increase in fuel capacity, compared to the Drophead Coupe, adds significant driving range. At the core of the Phantom Coupe is an aluminum chassis. The lightweight unibody structure is hand made, requiring over 430 feet of welding. "Rolls-Royce has always been about pace, performance and style," Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chief Designer, Ian Cameron, said.
