Springboks take home 2007 Rugby World Cup
2007-10-24 19:58:00
For the past seven weeks, the best rugby teams from around the globe met in France and competed for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Fans from all over came together to cheer on their favorite teams, and everyone in attendance took part in one of the greatest atmospheres a sports fan could ask for. As the tournament toiled on, the traditional powers flexed their muscles and dominated in Pool Play. England, France, and South Africa all found their way to the semi-finals. However, it was newcomer Argentina that took the competition by surprise, with their trip to the semi-finals and a third place finish. The Rugby World Cup came to a conclusion this past weekend, and the South Africa Springboks were victorious, holding the trophy over their head for the second time in team history. Check out this playlist, with highlights from both on and off the pitch of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. -Dumont
South Africa win the Rugby World Cup in an exciting Final Match
2007-10-23 23:42:00
In a very exciting game, South Africa got their second World Cup title, by reaching a 15-6 win over defending champions England in a dour final where all points came from penalty kicks at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. Indeed, Percy Montgomery, Springboks full-back, kicked four penalties with 20-year-old centre Francois Steyn booting one, allowing South Africa to put their hands on the Webb Ellis Trophy for the first time since winning it on home soil in 1995."It's really incredible," admitted Bryan Habana, South Africa winger."Our president (Thabo Mbeki) is here. And it's been an incredible seven weeks and we really appreciate the support we have received here."Despite holding their own for most of the match in both defence and kicking duels, England could not avenge the humiliating 36-0 loss to the Boks in the pool stage five weeks ago.And they once again displayed grit in the forwards with the determined scrummaging and defence that saw them through the quarters and semi-f...
Rugby World Cup: Anti-Team of the Tournament
2007-10-23 17:06:00
The team of the tournament that you wouldn't cross the street to watch if they were offering free beer and women. 15.  Gareth Thomas - WalTalked a lot, fouled a lot, got banned a lot.  Did little else. 14.  Cedric Heymans - FraHampered slightly by being played out of position at full-back, but even when returned to wing looked sluggish. 13.  Brian O'Driscoll - IreFinally toppled from his perch as the automatic choice as "best centre in the world" for lazy fans and journalists.  His performance summed up the whole Irish effort. 12.  Andy Farrell - EngIf an alien had come down to watch this tournament knowing nothing about Farrell's previous career, they would be mystified as to why he was playing. 11. Sitiveni Sivivatu - NZSuch a big reputation, such a turd-like performance    10.  Dan Parks - ScoWasn't very good before the tournament, even worse in it. 9.  Shaun Perry - EngThe former welder from the midlands who ...

Bloodandmud.com's pick of the best.  Do you agree? 15. Ignacio Corleto - ARGHis spark for the Argentina wonder try in the play-off match was a wonder to behold.  Offered threat from deep every time he took the ball and hit the line wonderfully all tournament. 14.  Takudza Nwengya - USAAbsolutely smoked the bloke playing at No.11 in this team to score a wonder try.  A no-doubt fulfilling career at Saracens awaits. 13. Seru Rabeni - FIJ   Awesome power alloyed with wicked pace and touch so deft you could pin a tail on it and call it a squirrel.  A masterclass in modern centre play. 12. Felipe Contepomi - ARGAn absolute powerhouse in defence and attack.  Missed very few kicks and will return to Leinster as a world class centre who plays fly-half. Rugby World Cup 2007: It's All Over!
2007-10-23 16:05:00
Apologies for the delay in updates here at bloodandmud.com, but I'm afraid that I have only recovered from my Saturday night hangover about 20 minutes ago. South Africa have won it, and I think it was fair that the best team in the tournament took the trophy home to be put in a cupboard while they row about skin colour for two years.  But deserved winners of a great tournament nonetheless.  The final itself was not exactly a fantastic game of rugby, with the Springboks quite happy to allow England to make mistakes and capitalise on the infringements and territorial advantage that ultimately led to.  There was debate about Mark Cueto "try" and for the record I'm in the "it wasn't one" camp. In fact I'm mystified as to how anyone can be in the other camp as the winger's boot blatantly brushed the whitewash before popping back up as he grounded the ball.   A no-brainer that one as I see it.  Forget that try anyway, no team that l...

OK, so Putney was the wrong place to be last night as London's major Saffa and Antipidean enclave celebrated South Africa's win over England in the final of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Personal highlights from the match included muscled eye-candy Percy Montgomery and Mathew Tait - it must be a blonde floppy hair thing. The markets for the match are many and varied, from straight winner, to handicaps, drop-goals, how many times the TMO will be used, the list is endless.  So what tips do we have? The "To score a try in both halves" market looks pretty good with England an incredible 14-1 against doing such a thing.  Even if things go terribly wrong, it seems logical that England could score in the first half and get a consolation try at the end doesn't it?  Eh? Oh... First try scorer.  I think it will be a forward, and a flanker is always a good bet from the back of a driven line out.  Juan Smith at 25-1 or Lewis Moody at 33-1 seems worth a punt. Rugby World Cup final: All set up and ready to go
2007-10-15 15:33:00
It just had to be didn't it?  After the 36-0 drubbing that was the catalyst for probably the greatest turnaround in the history of any sporting tournament, it seemed fated that England and South Africa would meet again in the final.   The worrying thing for England is that the Springboks seem to be making a habit of ending unlikely dreams in this tournament: Fiji in the quarters; Argentina last night; Andy Farrell's rugby union career; and will now focus on shaking the English awake from the nonsensical rapid eye movement they are enjoying. South Africa are overwhelming favourites for this, make no mistake; and unless England can move on another step this week, the complacency that this status may bring to the 'Boks is about the only hope that England can cling onto.  But haven't we said that prior to every England game since the horror in Paris four weeks ago?

Rugby World Cup 2007 - Semi Final :Ashton targets historic final win
2007-10-14 21:41:00
Ashton targets historic final win Ashton said the defeat by South Africa helped England England coach Brian Ashton insists his side are not content just to have reached the World Cup final and have set their sights on creating history. England beat France 14-9 in Saturday's semi-final and now have the chance to become the first country to win back-to-back World Cups. "The players have come so far on a very difficult journey," said Ashton. "I can't imagine they will be satisfied with reaching the final. They will want to create history." England's achievement comes after being beaten 36-0 in the group stages by South Africa, who will play Argentina in Sunday's second semi-final. And Ashton cited that early group game as the turning point in his team's fortunes. "The South ...

2007-10-09 00:26:00
Argentina Rugby team staved off a strong late Scottish fightback to reach the World Cup semifinals for the first time, winning 19-13 Sunday in an encounter that simply had no chance of matching the drama of the other three quarter-finals.Now, the four teams of the semifinals are defined: England's tense victory over Australia gave the British side the pass. Also France reached the semis with an incredible comeback triumph against New Zealand. And despite Fiji's valiant, but vain attempt to beat the rivals, South Africa qualified too. Now, Argentina's win over the Scots completed an exciting figure in this Cup.The game had a thrilling finish, however, with Scotland camped on the Pumas line seeking a matchwinning try which eventually never came.Gonzalo Longo Elia's first half try opened up a 13-3 lead for the South Americans who at least became the first team from outside the Tri-or Six Nations to reach the last four. Their prize is a game against South Africa, which beat Fiji 37-...
New Zealand is devastated for their elimination in the Rugby World Cup
2007-10-09 00:23:00
With a suitcase full of questions and frustration, New Zealand Rugby team goes back home from the World Cup today, seeking a new coach and answers to why the top- ranked team underachieves at the sport's biggest event.Indeed, following the All Blacks' quarterfinal defeat to France in Cardiff, the New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday said a coach will be appointed by Christmas, bringing a likely end to Graham Henry's four-year tenure and passing on the duty of guiding the national squad to a first title since 1987.We think that Henry has the worst World Cup record of the five All Blacks coaches whose teams have flopped after entering as the favorites. Hours before New Zealand's 20-18 loss, defending champion England advanced to a semifinal against the French by beating Australia, which is also seeking a new head coach."This is the All Blacks' worst result in six Cups and Henry and his fellow selectors will have to live with that," former All Blacks prop John Drake, a World Cup winn...

England beating Australia in Rugby World Cup and Creativity
2007-10-07 14:09:00
Last night I, like many people in Australia and around the world, switched off my TV in sadness. England beat my beloved Australian Wallabies 12-10. While I sympathised with the Australia team, I can't help admire the English team's game strategy. The English played the game with 'nads of steel and lots of courage, managing to keep their opponent off balanced using great team work and playing to their strengths. As a result they managed to shut the Australian offence down while still keeping to their own game plan.
