The ICJ wants the U.S. to vacate the death penalty sentences of several Mexican ...

Congresscritters uphold rule of law? for now
2008-04-03 18:44:00
It's a given that no matter what comes out of the housing-crash legislation in Washington, it'll be a botch.  And no one will be happy with it.  Liberals will complain it doesn't help the little people.  Conservatives will complain it doesn't help the big shots enough.  And free marketeers will be appalled at the ...
China Sex, Prostitutes, Rule of Law, Lines of Power, Unintended Consequence
2008-03-20 18:30:00
I made a rule for myself many years ago that whenever I was too in love with something I wrote, I needed to run it by someone else. I made this rule because usually when I fall in love with my own writing, it is because I think it is just SO clever. Yet, one person's clever so easily be another person's smarminess or cruel biting sarcasm. I would have that same rule for this blog, but since blogging waits for no man (or woman), and since having someone else read my blog posts is not billable, I do not. But, in doing a post today on crime, I came across an old post I truly love. I think (but what do I know?) it is my best post and, due in large measure to the words "sex" and "prostitutes" it certainly has been one of our most viewed. I have never re-run a post, but in the hope nobody finds it smarmy, and in the hope it is not too late to grab some residual readers still interested in Spitzergate, here goes: I usually avoid writing on the really big China issues, figuring t...

Matt Shaner -- "Supports Traditional Values & The Rule of Law"
2008-02-05 01:13:00
This comes directly from his website, under "on the issues."I find it incredibly entertaining that this man sees himself in "support the rule of law" when he has thus far shown himself as one bent on circumventing it.Remember when he called the DA in State College to ask him how to evade the police knocking on his door? You know, just after wrecking his car in an apparent drunk driving crash? What a joke. And then there is this bit of lunacy from his page(Did Rick Santorum write this for him?):Protecting the timeless tradition of marriage as a union between one man and one womanPromoting a culture of lifeProtecting the rights of law-abiding gun ownersLet the insanity begin. Please Pennsylvania, pay attention to this man. He is dangerous to our future. His ideals are those of the failed Rick Santorum. Remember how we sent that guy packing? Lets not embarrass ourselves again by electing someone the likes of Matt Shaner.I don't believe he isn't in this for you, or for me. He's ...

Political Power and the Rule of Law: Ron Paul Explains
2007-10-20 03:09:00
The problem is that politicians are not supposed to have power over us-- we're supposed to be free. We seem to have forgotten that freedom means the absence of government coercion. So when politicians and the media celebrate political power, they really are celebrating the power of certain individuals to use coercive state force.read more | digg storyLiberty Central- Conservatism's Blog of Choice
A Truth Commission or the rule of law?
2007-10-10 20:44:00
Syed Badrul AhsanAll this excitement about a truth commission raises some very significant truths that we need to handle. As Law Adviser Mainul Hosein informs us, and every now and then, it is the state of the economy, which will be a determinant in the formation and operation of the truth commission. What is the truth? Asked jesting Pilate once. He would not stay for an answer. At this point in historical time, here in Bangladesh, it now becomes our responsibility to raise that very question and place it before the interim government and then wait for an answer, if there is any answer. And while we wait, we will mull over the truth that has apparently convinced the government that a truth commission needs to be in place. And that truth is, in more ways than one, an acknowledgment that the methods applied in dealing with dishonest businessmen have not worked, that indeed hauling them off to prison or issuing public notices about their alleged corruption have now brought economic activ...

Where is the "wealth of nations"? Answer: Rule of Law
2007-10-07 03:39:00
An interesting story from Reason Magazine: A Mexican migrant to the U.S. is five times more productive than one who stays home. Why is that? The answer is not the obvious one: This country has more machinery or tools or natural resources. Instead, according to some remarkable but largely ignored research—by the World Bank, of all places—it is because the average American has access to over $418,000 in intangible wealth, while the stay-at-home Mexican's intangible wealth is just $34,000.But what is intangible wealth, and how on earth is it measured?...the World Bank finds, "Human capital and the value of institutions (as measured by rule of law) constitute the largest share of wealth in virtually all countries." According to their regression analyses, for example, the rule of law explains 57 percent of countries' intangible capital. Education accounts for 36 percent.Average per capita wealth in OECD countries is $440,000, consisting of $10,000 in natural capital, $76,000 ...
Courageous Judge Restores Rule of Law
2007-09-27 18:19:00
Patriot Act Provisions Voided - washingtonpost.com A federal judge in Oregon ruled yesterday that two provisions of the USA Patriot Act are unconstitutional, marking the second time in as many weeks that the anti-terrorism law has come under attack in the courts. In a case brought by a Portland man who was wrongly detained as a terrorism suspect in 2004, U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken ruled that the Patriot Act violates the Constitution because it "permits the executive branch of government to conduct surveillance and searches of American citizens without satisfying the probable cause requirements of the Fourth Amendment." "For over 200 years, this Nation has adhered to the rule of law -- with unparalleled success," Aiken wrote in a strongly worded 44-page opinion. "A shift to a Nation based on extra-constitutional authority is prohibited, as well as ill-advised." The ruling in Oregon follows a separate finding on Sept. 6 by a federal judge in New York, who struck down provisions...
Are We as a Culture Ready to Sell Out Our Mother, Dump the Rule of Law ov
2007-08-15 14:15:00
You can tell by looking at her picture my Grandmother is an artist. She was fortunate to be the only girl of five children, the oldest and most favored child. Blessed with living in a small town and growing up with an abundance of relatives, she had it all: family, intelligence, charm, style, looks, wit, strong pride and character. Despite growing up during two World Wars, raising two children and losing two husbands, she spent as much of her life as she could enjoying herself, singing or dancing, having lunch with her friends, working in her garden, reading, decorating. She loves flowers, music, sweets, colors and antiques. The artist that she is came out when she was in her 60's when she decided that although she couldn't draw a straight line, painting sure looked like fun. And paint she did. She painted what she loved and her family loved what she painted. She is the keeper of the family history and stories from her wealth of relatives. Our family looks to her to know our roots....

Ruddock and the rule of law - who rules and whose law?

Ruddock's apparent response to an opinion piece in the Australian regarding flaws in the process of selecting federal judges could not have been published at a worse time. Bush's Damage to Rule of Law
2007-06-22 19:52:00
Never before in the US history I'm aware of, has been rule of law so undermined by a President. Clearly, Bush and Cheney believe the President and Executive branch is above the law. Here is a must read editorial from the New York Times. President Bush is notorious for issuing statements taking exception to hundreds of bills as he signs them. This week, we learned that in a shocking number of cases, the Bush administration has refused to enact those laws. Congress should use its powers to insist that its laws are obeyed. The Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan arm of Congress, investigated 19 provisions to which Mr. Bush objected. It found that six of them, or nearly a third, have not been implemented as the law requires. The G.A.O. did not investigate some of the most infamous signing statements, like the challenge to a ban on torture. But the ones it looked into are disturbing enough. In one case, Congress directed the Pentagon in its 2007 budget request to account ...
What is Conservatism? Part 2 - The Rule of Law
2007-06-20 05:03:00
The term gets thrown around allot these days. Most people automatically assume that the term is synonymous with Republican. This is not true. Republicans are a political party. Conservatism is an ethos, an ideology, even a way of life. While people of particular political parties follow the directions of their party leaders, conservatives are bound ...
Rule of Law, Gonzales Style
2007-05-04 13:57:00
Author:  mcjoanvia Dailykos.comA Washington State prosecutor writes to Josh: Apparently during Comey's testimony today he said that one of the reasons McKay got himself in hot water with the DOJ heavyweights was because he was pushing for additional resources to investigate the murder of Tom Wales, who was an Assistant US Attorney in Seattle. Tom Wales was shot and killed in 2001. What nobody has talked about, and what you may not be aware of, is the fact that Tom Wales was extremely active in attempting to get tighter gun control laws passed here in Washington. Think about that for a second. A pro-gun control federal prosecutor was shot and killed. John McKay was agitating for more resources to bring his killer to justice. That pissed off DOJ, who apparently thought that McKay should spend his time going after bogus voter fraud prosecutions rather than solve the murder of a guy who was in favor of gun control. If you don't think the fact that Tom Wales' political vi...
