Interestingly, he admitted that it would be difficult for the BoJ to follow the example of the SNB by defending a particular exchange rate for the yen, citing the vast size of the JPY market as a major hurdle to controlling supply. SMS Marketing Firms Swear To Abide By Rules. End Of Pesky Messages?
2012-01-13 09:00:00
SMS aggregators and marketers have signed a Code of Conduct under the aegis of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) to refrain from harassing mobile subscribers who have opted for “Do Not Disturb”. The Code of Conduct designed by IAMAI in association with seven of the largest firms like ACL-wireless; Air2web, Netcore, Pinnacle Teleservices; SMS Gupshup; Unicel technologies; ValueFirst  puts a self imposed ban on these companies to use the overseas origination route for SMS marketing . A while ago, despite a ban by TRAI, some telemarketing companies continued to send SMSes to users registered under NCPR earlier known as Do Not Disturb list. Upon investigation it was learnt that these SMSes originated from overseas destinations where our regulations do not apply. IAMAI President Subho Ray has urged the 2800 odd registered telemarketing companies and a couple of telcos who actively promote these services to urgently adopt and abide by this Code of Conduct & go...

5 Absolute Rules For Being a Great Landlord

When I started buying real estate in the early 2000?s, I knew absolutely nothing about being a landlord.  I had no idea about local laws or local codes and even less about actually being a good and responsible landlord.  What I had done, and this is where the danger started, was read half of a ...This Article is Copyright © 2004-2011 BiggerPockets, Inc. NFL Playoffs - Time to Change the Rules: Overtime's Playoff Modification
2012-01-06 23:04:00
The NFL released a reminder this week about the modified post season rules. The league changed the rules before the start of last season, trying to prevent a first possession field goal from ending a playoff game. However, the rule was not needed last year. This year, it could be. Essentially, the rule prevents a team from winning the game on the first possession, unless they score a touchdown. A touchdown will always end overtime. However, if a team kicks a field goal on that first possession, they then have to kick off and allow the opponent an opportunity to possess the ball. At this point, the team to get the ball second will either lose by not scoring, tie the game and continue playing, or win the game with a touchdown. If both teams have had a chance to possess the ball on offense, the game will end on the first score. And, just to throw this one in there, any defensive score (interception return, fumble return, safety) ends the game as well. Does that all make sense? ...

In her latest column Maureen Dowd that red-headed siren of a 4 alarm fire, woman, and journalist who lives in Washington DC has this to say about HOMELAND: The TV Series.  Titled STINKTANK, The Pungent Aroma of Paranoia Maureen lets loose her tongue, with words, that will make you wonder "What Country Am I Living In"? What Planet Am I On"?  What is American Tee Vee Doing To Our Brains? Not to worry though, it's just the HOMELAND. HOMELAND America (the TV Series) and the Stinktank of the same name. Home of the newly formed NDAA, and SOPA, and PIPA, and all the other Paranoid Machinations of one country's government on it's people. So sit back read what the red-headed wonder has to say, and see if you might think the same thing as Maureen after watching HOMELAND. If not, lower your dosage of Zoloft, get real, and for God's sake, quit watching TV. You'l...
What Is a Spousal IRA ? Rules, Eligibility & Benefits

If you are a stay-at-home spouse, it seems unfair that you can’t build up a retirement account in your name. New Rules for the Government Refinance Program HARP
2011-12-19 06:00:00
I predict the government refinance program, HARP, will be on the lips of many people who own underwater homes. But whether the program will actually bail anybody out is uncertain at this point. It's pretty much the same as the old program with 2 important changes. First, it is now available to investors as well as owner occupants. Second, there is no cap on the amount of the refinance. In the past, it was capped at 125% of market value. These two changes will open the program to more troubled homeowners, but as with any government program, there are a number of restrictions for the government refinance program. The 8 Rules I Use to Earn $124.29 in Dividends Per Day

I counted twice, just to be sure… $41,513.18. That's the amount in "daily paychecks" — more commonly known as dividends — I've received from my investment portfolio in 2011. This total comes to $124.29 for each day of the year. Cash.   Why am I telling you this? It's not to brag. I was born and raised in Wisconsin. The typical Midwestern mentality is so ingrained in me, I very rarely talk about money. And I'm not one to show off, either. I drive a Nissan I bought six years ago. I get my hair cut at Supercuts. Changing the Rules in the Middle of the Game
2011-12-03 14:30:00
Angela Merkel is leading the call for a rule change, a rewiring of the basic treaty that binds the EU. But is it both too much and too late? The market action suggests that time is indeed running out, and so we’ll look at the likely consequences. Then I glance over the other way and take notice of news out of China that may be of import. Plus a few links for your weekend listening“pleasure.”-; There is lots to cover, so let’s get started. Changing the Rules I have been writing for a very long time about the changes needed to the EU treaty if Europe is to survive. Specifically, last week I noted that Angela Merkel has made . . . → Read More: Changing the Rules in the Middle of the Game
Airtel Rules Africa With Subscriber Base Crossing 50 Mn: What About Quality
2011-12-01 11:45:00
Bharti-Airtel confirmed yesterday that its subscriber base in Africa has surpassed the 50 Million Milestone. World’s fifth biggest mobile operator, Bharti Airtel, started operations in Africa by acquiring Zain’s assets in 16 African countries in June 2010 at a cost of US$ 10.7 Billion. Zain’s subscriber base which was 42 Mn, had come down to 36 Million. After Airtel Africa took over the reins, it simply slashed mobile call rates & mimmicked the low-cost model it had perfected in India. This coupled with the outsourcing model to maintain low cost should help Bharti-Airtel to achieve $5 billion in revenue and $2 billion in operating profit from Africa by the year ending March 2013. Commenting on the milestone, CEO of Bharti Airtel, Manoj Kohli said, “Bharti Airtel Limited today celebrated a significant milestone when it acquired its 50 millionth mobile customer in Africa. It has achieved this milestone within just 17 months of acquiring Zain’s mobile operations ...

Playing conflict by rules
2011-11-25 08:02:00
The most striking feature of the Israeli-Arab conflict is that it is impossible. Israel is simply too small to defend in modern mobile warfare. In 1948 that was less of an issue since we fought against Arab militia, but in 1967 and 1973 Israel was invaded by regular Arab armies. Even the most incapable, battered army can gather enough strength for the forty-mile advance that would allow Syria to wipe out the Jewish state. Lacking tanks and aircraft after the first battles, Syria could still march its 200,000-strong infantry and mammoth conscripted reserves into Israel, and no realistically available amount of Jewish firepower would have helped in a trench war. Hamas and Hezbollah can easily bring Jewish society to screams by consistent attacks at Israel’s soft underbelly, the foreign Jews. Daily stabbing of Jews throughout the world is a slam-dunk affair, and it wouldn’t even alienate European governments from the terrorists. Faced with such major unrest, the Europeans would...

New M&A Rules Proposed By TRAI To Benefit Telenor
2011-11-14 11:35:00
TRAI has proposed new rules or rather amendment of old rules regarding Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) which are believed to be beneficial for Norwegian mobile operator Telenor ASA. The proposed rules allows the companies to merge  if their combined subscriber or revenue market share does not exceed 60%, provided, the companies get a consent from TRAI if the created company has a market share between 35% and 60%. No consent is required if the market share is below 35%. These relaxations will surely help troubled Telenor, who is looking for a third partner (rumored to be Aircel); after Unitech who holds 32.75% stake, in comparatively small mobile company Uninor. Telenor’s CEO and President Jon Fredrik Baksaas called the rules “fair” and “reasonable” & added “Every market has its framework for competition setup. The way things are spelt out now seems to be fairly reasonable.” Uninor, which currently operates in 13 Circles is under investigation...

Meal train etiquette - the rules of giving

There was a death on our block and it reminded me of a topic I've been dying to write about - meal train etiqeutte. Wait. Was there an awkward pun in there? Maybe you shouldn't listen to me.When someone has a baby, loses a loved one, has surgery and can't take care of their family and such occasions, something nice you can do is bring them a meal. If you want to be really  helpful, coordinate a meal train with their peeps (every other night is usually a good pace). But there are rules to being helpful. Rules? Ah, that's why I'm here. 1. (Hat tip to ScottChicago for reminding me of the post.)Repost from August 2007, with some updates:A reader last week who recently moved to Chicago asked me where she could find rules for behavior on the CTA. I couldn't find them on the CTA Web site, so I asked the CTA for them. Noelle Gaffney sent me a copy of the 1998 ordinance spelling out what we can and can't do on the CTA. "Many of these rules are posted and conveyed through announcements," she...
Obama's New EPA Rules Would Destroy Our Energy Sector
2011-06-10 17:30:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Half of America's energy comes from coal-fired power plants but Obama's new EPA rules would about destroy the coal industry driving our energy costs through the roof. That's not all they would do, either. Even Paul Bedard of USNews says that Obama's new EPA rules will "slam the coal industry so hard that hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost." Analysis by the National Economic Research Associates says that these two new EPA regulations would be "among the most expensive ever imposed by the agency on coal-fueled power plants, dramatically increasing electricity rates and natural gas prices and leading to substantial job losses," and would cost the U.S. electric sector nearly $18 billion a year....
CTA quiet car might be nice, but spirited conversation rules
2011-06-08 14:00:00
Metra expanded its "quiet cars" project to all 11 of its rail lines this week. Metra's website says "the rules are simple":No cellphone calls. If passengers must answer their phones, they should make it brief or move to the vestibule or another car. Conversations are discouraged; if they must be held they should be short and in subdued voices. All electronic devices must be muted, and headphones should not be loud enough for anyone else to hear. I am in favor of the no cellphone rule. As I previously noted: I just want quiet cars so I can escape this insanity and stupidity of cellers. And you folks narrowly supported CTA quiet cars in an unscientific quick poll on CTA...

2011-05-12 09:35:00
I had this post pretty much written midway through the 8th inning, then the game hit a fan, and crazy jagged pieces of baseball splattered everywhere as the Angels scurried in terror. But up to that point, there was a clear narrative: Jake Peavy made his long-awaited, and lest we forget, improbable return to the mound, and looked....well...as good as you would hope. He topped out at 93 mph on the radar gun, threw some competent sliders (and a few that didn't qualify as such), got through 6 innings and 87 pitches injury-free and most encouragingly, lost a battle with Ozzie Guillen to return for the 7th inning after 6 IP, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. He looked strong, and pitched well in spurts. A more than encouraging debut given the layoff.
Google Rejects Internet Rules Set By India; Government Clarifies
2011-05-12 07:15:00
Google doesn’t want to be tied down by the newly introduced internet rules in India, which were set out last month. According to Google, these rules could hamper Google’s online status and the same thing is applicable to many other websites. There are certain things, which these rules prohibit and does not allow a website to “host, display, upload, modify, publish, transmit, update or share any information that is grossly harmful, harassing, blasphemous, defamatory, invasive of another’s privacy or racially and ethnically objectionable” content. If any such content is uploaded, it will be the website’s responsibility to delete that within next one and half days, after a notification from the government. The main concern of Google has been echoed by some civil right activists as well. They are trying to establish that these rules will harness the rights which social media enjoys. Since the web companies won’t be willing to lose space in the burgeoning market in India, ...

Movie Review - Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules
2011-04-07 06:18:00
BY ROBERT HAMMERLE, guest contributor to HammervisionYou know that they're out there, and try as you might you also know that you are going to go. Yes, despite praying more fervently than Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane where he implored his divine Father to "let this cup pass," you know you have a date with a regrettable artistic destiny. Let's face it, some films have a tractor beam appeal to kids that makes an adult seem like Simon Lagree if you tried to say, "Oh God no." Furthermore, despite your well-founded apprehensions, there is always that chance that they may deliver something resembling adult satire that will make the experience at least borderline tolerable. Sure, the whole thought...

I found it very hard to believe that the vote went in the direction for those teams that just "can't" get-it-together on Special Teams.  The other other thing that I found surprising is how the "owners" made the proposal for "safety" reasons.  PLEASE, GET-OFF MY FOOT!!!!Josh Cribbs was a guest on ESPN's "Mike & Mike" Show Tuesday morning, and he made some very "strong" points.  The one point that stuck with me (from Cribbs), was the fact that return men are at an even greater risk in the event that a kicker may get more than enough "hang-time" to allow the coverage to "close-in" on the returner.  In that case, the returner could stand to get his bell-rung when he...

Important New SBA 8(a) Rules Announced
2011-02-16 21:22:00
By: Michael H. Payne and Edward T. DeLisle The U.S. Small Business Administration published a package of final rules on February 11, 2011, that will revise the regulations of its 8(a) Business Development program to better ensure that the benefits flow to the intended recipients and help prevent waste, fraud and abuse. The rules were published in The Federal Register and will become effective on March 14, 2011. The revisions are the first comprehensive overhaul of the 8(a) program in more than 10 years. The regulations incorporate technical, as well as substantive, changes that mirror legislation enacted since the last revision in June of 1998. The rules cover a variety of areas ranging from clarifications on determining economic disadvantage to requirements on Joint Ventures and the Mentor-Protégé program. Some of the components of the 8(a) program that the revised regulations will affect include: Joint Ventures - The new rules require that the 8(a) ...
