Stone Finds His Rumsfeld
2008-05-14 00:17:00
Stone Finds His RumsfeldBut Bush biopic still needs a Dick Oliver Stone?s upcoming George W Bush biopic, W, has gained another classy cast member with the addition of Scott Glenn who is set to play former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Glenn?s last role was as the shady CIA director Ezra Kramer in The Bourne Ultimatum, so it should be a relatively easy gig for the veteran actor. The controversial Rumsfeld, who resigned in 2006, was twice appointed Secretary of Defense, first for President Gerald Ford and later for Bush. Glenn has played a number of shady characters, most notably as Clarice Starling's FBI boss Jack Crawford in Silence Of The Lambs, so the role should be an easy fit. All that?s left for Oliver Stone is to cast his Dick Cheney. We reckon William Hurt (albeit with a comb-over wig) would be a good choice but given Cheney?s infamous fowl hunting expedition farrago, we?d say Elmer Fudd is a shoo-in for the role.Source: Empire...
Rumsfeld Says The Generals Are To Blame For Poor Pre-War Planning
2008-05-09 16:00:00
By- Suzie-Q @ 7:00 AM MST Rumsfeld blames the generals for poor pre-war planning.» In February 2003, Gen. Eric Shinseki famously predicted that “several hundred thousand” troops would be needed for post-war hostilities in Iraq. According to documents recently released by the Pentagon in response to The New York Times’s expose on its propaganda program, however, Donald Rumsfeld claimed in a 2006 briefing that the reason why he did not support a larger invasion force was because commanders did not request it: RUMSFELD: Now, it turns out he [Shinkseki] was right. The commanders–you guys ended up wanting roughly the same as you had for the major combat operation, and that’s what we have. There is no damned guidebook that says what the number ought to be. We were queued up to go up to what, 400-plus thousand. Q: Yes, they were already in queue. RUMSFELD: They were in the queue. We would have gone right on if they’d wanted them, but they didn’t, so life goes on. In reality,...

Rumsfeld of Mesopotamia

The attempt by al-Maliki to take out al-Sadr in Basra sounds like a repeat of Donald Rumsfeld's initial efforts in Iraq.U.S. Cites Gaps in Planning of Iraqi Assault on Basra Interviews with a wide range of American and military officials...suggest that Mr. Maliki overestimated his military's abilities and underestimated the scale of the resistance. The Iraqi prime minister also displayed an impulsive leadership style that did not give his forces or that of his most powerful allies, the American and British military, time to prepare."He went in with a stick and he poked a hornet's nest, and the resistance he got was a little bit more than he bargained for," said one official in the multinational force in Baghdad who requested anonymity. "They went in with 70 percent of a plan. Sometimes that's enough. This time it wasn't."And this is significant: The Iraqis, however, also began to fly in supplies and troops using their two C-130s. More than 500 Iraqi replacement soldiers were mo...

Rumsfeld Talks
2008-01-24 14:53:00
Rumsfeld Talks Posted by samc on January 23rd, 2008 Private media does not get up in the morning and say what can we do to promote the values and ideas that the free Western nations believe in. It gets up in the morning and says they’re going to try to make money by selling whatever they sell. The way they decided to do that is to be dramatic and if it bleeds it leads is the common statement in the media today. They’ve got their job, and they have to do that, and that’s what they do. We need someone in the United States government, some entity, not like the old USIA. I think this agency, a new agency, has to be something that would take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that exist today. There are multiple channels for information. The Internet is there, pods are there, talk radio is there, e-mails are there. There are all kinds of opportunities. We do not with any systematic organized way attempt to engage the battle of ideas and talk about...
Rumsfeld Offers Advice On Winning War?Again
2008-01-24 08:13:00
After several months of silence, former Defense Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld once again offered advice on how to win the war in Iraq. Donald Rumsfeld: "I Got Your Yellowcake Right Here."
2007-12-08 11:37:00
BISMARCK, ND…12/08/07 7:15am EST…Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld appeared this morning on the popular television show “Good Morning Bismarck.” Rumsfeld, a last minute replacement for “Tiny Thelma’s Tin Can Band,” was challenged by host Anita Biscuit about misinformation promulgated in the lead up to the Iraq War. Stated Rumsfeld, “If I have to plant it myself, we’re still gonna find yellowcake.” Asked to “Say more about that stuff,” Rumsfeld stated, “I can do better than that.” Holding up a rumpled paper bag, Rumsfeld stated, “Saddam’s yellowcake is in here, in my…umm, briefcase.” Asked by Biscuit if he brought “enough yellowcake for everyone,” Rumsfeld responded “Well, okay, but this stuff aint easy to find."

Robert Gates: The ‘Anti-Rumsfeld’
2007-12-05 17:01:00
newsweek.com: Late this summer, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates traveled to the Middle East, to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. At each stop, high-ranking Arab officials anxiously asked him: was the United States preparing to attack Iran? Gates reassured them all that the United States had no plans to do so, at least any time soon. He wasn’t dramatic about it, says a Defense Department official who accompanied Gates on the trip but declined to be identified discussing secret talks. “He didn’t grab anyone’s arm and say, ‘I’ve got Cheney under control, wink, wink’,” says this official. But Gates was low-key, straightforward, steadying—calming, even soothing in a dry and matter-of-fact way. A little later, at the end of September, Gates met with the Democratic Senate Policy Committee (something his predecessor, Donald Rumsfeld, would never do). One of the senators nervously asked if the Bush administ...

Why Kissinger, But Not Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney and Rice?
2007-11-24 04:23:00
Why Milosevic, But Not Kissinger?By Peter TatchellGuardianApril 25, 2002I lost my bid to have the former US secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, prosecuted on charges of war crimes in Indochina, but there is good reason to hope that a future, better prepared attempt might succeed.Refusing my application for an arrest warrant at Bow Street magistrates' court, Judge Nicholas Evans said he was not "presently" able to draft a "suitably precise charge" based on the evidence "of generalised allegations" that I had submitted. Judge Evans doubted whether I could produce more specific, admissible evidence. But his comments leave open the possibility that he might issue a warrant in the future - if I can produce stronger evidence of Kissinger's culpability in the killing, maiming, torture and forced relocation of civilian populations in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the late 60s and early 70s.It is now my intention to liaise with human rights lawyers and organisations in the United States, ...

Europe?s New Donald Rumsfeld
2007-11-16 05:32:00
State Duma elections in December are almost certain to cement the power of forces loyal to President Vladimir Putin. In the 1990s, EU members found it easy ...

Poll: Bush's Approval Level One of the Longest-Lasting Lowest Levels in Rec
2007-11-09 21:17:00
CNN has just come out with another poll measuring President Bush's approval ratings. They don't look good for him. In fact from a historical point of view they look positively legacy-destroying. Twenty-three percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Thursday say that compared to other presidents in American history, President Bush is the worst ever. Thirty-five percent of those surveyed say that Bush is doing a poor job compared to other presidents and 40 percent said he was doing a good job compared to his predecessors. Only one percent said that Bush was the best president ever in American history. Thirty-four percent of those surveyed approve of how Bush is handling his job as president. That?s down slightly from the 36 percent who approved of the President's job performance when we asked the same question last month. Bush?s approval rating has consistently been below 40 percent for more than a year. "The last president with approva...
Stanford Students Protest Rumsfeld Appointment at the Hoover Institution
2007-11-09 09:24:00
More than 100 Stanford University students demonstrated on Thursday against a decision to make former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution amid campus discontent over a symbol of U.S. failings in the Iraq war. To date, nearly 4,000 Stanford faculty, students and alumni have signed a petition begun by a faculty member to reject Rumsfeld's appointment announced in September, but John Raisian, the institute's director, said Rumsfeld deserved the honor of being a "distinguished visiting fellow." "Donald Rumsfeld has a remarkable record of achievement," Raisian told the Stanford Faculty Senate. "Like it or not, he has had a distinguished career." Rumsfeld twice served as defense secretary under President Gerald Ford and President George W. Bush. He also served under President Richard Nixon; in the House of Representatives; as an ambassador to NATO; and as chief executive of two Fortune 500 companies. "The concern with Secretary Rumsfeld is ...

Rumsfeld the Bigot and Liar
2007-11-01 15:09:00
This pretty much confirms my on-going perception. Rumsfeld and others in the Administration are bigots against Muslims. They also make it policy to deceive the American people. washingtonpost.com In a series of internal musings and memos to his staff, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld argued that Muslims avoid "physical labor" and wrote of the need to "keep elevating the threat," "link Iraq to Iran" and develop "bumper sticker statements" to rally public support for an increasingly unpopular war.

Rumsfeld and The Taxi to the Darkside

by Larry C. Johnson News today that Donald Rumsfeld is the target of a legal complaint filed in France accusing him of masterminding the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo gives Rummy a chance to walk in the shoes of Saddam Hussein. Like Saddam, Rummy insists he did nothing wrong and that he was simply pursuing the best interest of the American people. How you going to make an omelet without breaking some eggs? Right? I doubt if Rummy will wind up on the gallows in France, but the charges against him are real and are serious. And if karma and justice are linked, Rummy will be tried and convicted. One thing is certain, Rummy is now part of an exclusive but growing club of Amcits who face legal peril in foreign lands because they participated (allegedly) in some kind of torture, disappearance, or other violation of international human rights. That means he wont be going on any foreign junkets. Once outside the safe confines of the Unit...

Donald Rumsfeld "Personally Involved" in Guantanamo Abuse
2007-10-25 01:31:00
In a new book titled Administration of Torture: A Documentary Record from Washington to Abu Ghraib and Beyond, two ACLU investigators reveal their findings on a year-long search into 100,000 government documents turned over to them by the Bush Administration regarding Guantanamo Bay.Highlights from Raw Story:"[T]he documents show unambiguously that the administration has adopted some of the methods of the most tyrannical regimes," write Jameel Jaffer and Amrit Singh. "Documents from Guantanamo describe prisoners shackled in excruciating 'stress positions,' held in freezing-cold cells, forcibly stripped, hooded, terrorized with military dogs, and deprived of human contact for months." ...Drawing almost exclusively from the documents, the authors say there is a stark contrast between the public statements of President Bush and then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the policies those and others in the administration were advocating behind the scenes. ...The ACLU also found th...

How Rumsfeld paved the way for Blackwater
2007-08-01 23:35:00
by Geezer Power …2:35 PM PDT At war with the Pentagon Guardian August 1, 2007 The world was a very different place on September 10 2001, when Donald Rumsfeld stepped on to the podium at the Pentagon to deliver one of his first major addresses as defense secretary under President George W Bush. For most Americans, there was no such thing as al-Qaida, and Saddam Hussein was still the president of Iraq. Rumsfeld had served in the post once before - under President Gerald Ford, from 1975 to 1977 - and he returned to the job in 2001 with ambitious visions. That September day, in the first year of the Bush administration, Rumsfeld addressed the Pentagon officials in charge of overseeing the high-stakes business of defence contracting - managing the Halliburtons, DynCorps and Bechtels. The secretary stood before a gaggle of former corporate executives from Enron, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics and Aerospace Corporation whom he had tapped as his top deputies at the department of ...
