The Rundown: '08 MLB Draft, Road Jersey Issue and More...
2008-06-04 20:12:00 Erstwhile Sun blogger Roch Kubatko previews the 2008 MLB Draft for the Baltimore Orioles in today's Sun. Up until a few years ago, I never paid that much attention to it; however, considering the rising salaries in the game, the success of the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Rays, Marlins and other teams, the draft has become vital. The Orioles have a lot of holes, and honestly I think the need a college guy ready ready to make an impact soon (I would like us to get Justin Smoak -- a potential plus bat), but Roch's pieces chronicles what the club is looking for in what could be a very important day when it comes to the franchise for the next few years.Speaking of the draft, Dan Connolly of the Sun has a great post on his blog about the Orioles' starting rotation in 2010; the Examiner has a piece about the '08 draft; the Orioles love the way Daniel Cabrera has been progressing; Luis Hernandez was DFA'ed and should held back to Norfolk, thus, the team is hoping he makes it back and regain...

Yankee Smackdown & The Rundown
2008-05-22 15:27:00 After the 12-2 drubbing of the Yankees on Tuesday, the Orioles were riding high and looking forward to taking on the youngster, Darrell Rasner; however, the same Birds that whooped up on the Bombers last night would be listless.Baltimore lost to New York 8-0, and there was not much that came of this game at all. Olson, who has been solid since his call-up had nothing as he gave up six runs in 2 2/3 innings. Perhaps he did not have his stuff, or he just was intimidated, but he looked awful.Of course, Alex Rodriguez, needless to say is back -- he hit a homer, and was robbed of a second home run by the umpires (it hit the yellow stairs, but the officials called it a ground rule double). Not that the home mattered in the final score, but there needs to be some version of instant replay instituted. Anyhow, there's not much more to add from last night's game -- the Orioles were horrible, and the Yankees took advantage.Speaking of the Yankees 12-2 drubbing, the Baltimore Orioles are one o...

O's Sweep Sox; The Rundown...
2008-05-15 14:55:00 For the past several years, the Baltimore Orioles have been worse than a laughing stock -- they have been disrespected, spat upon and treated well, like dirt. However, things might be changing and for the better.Yesterday, the Orioles had a dramatic come-from-behind victory as they beat the Boston Red Sox, 6-3, yesterday afternoon as Daniel Cabrera won his his fourth game and George Sherill earned his 15th save.We had a new hero of the day ? the always intense Jay Payton. We have swept the Boston Red Sox, or as I call them the Evil Empire 1A. The Orioles of last year would have given up in the 6th inning or had no clue as to how to defeat Boston, but this year's team is different.I got home around the sixth inning and once I saw Lester weaken & the Boston bullpen come into the game, the Orioles had a chance to come back. The Payton homer was incredible and I literally jumped up for joy ? something I have not done during an Oriole game for a long time. It?s been good to see more o...

The Red Sox Are Coming To Town; Adam Jones; The Rundown...
2008-05-13 19:13:00 The Baltimore Orioles tango with the Boston Red Sox, or as I dub them, the Evil Empire 1A tonight and tomorrow at the Yard. The Red Sox always play us tough; however, this weekend, the Twins took 3 out of 4 from them and they'll be looking maintain their slim division lead (Tampa is 1/2 game back from first in the AL East right now). The Orioles took three out of four in Kansas City, and despite the excellent pitching from both the starting and relief corps -- they are still struggling woefully on the offensive front.Matchups:Tonight: Jeremy Guthrie (1-3, 4.32) vs. Josh Beckett (4-2, 3.70)Tommorrow: Daniel Cabrera (3-1, 3.54) vs. Jon Lester (2-2, 4.06)I'd be happy with a split, and even more elated with a sweep in this short two-game series. Game one will be difficult as Beckett seems to back on his game and Guthrie will need a solid effort to win; however, I'm looking eagerly to see game two as it will be a test to see if Cabrera can stifle the Sox potent offense. The Boston offen...

O's Lose in Oaktown, 2-1 in Ten; What About The Offense: The Rundown?
2008-05-06 17:03:00 The O?s are now back at .500 as they lost to the A?s in Oaktown, 2-1. The loss is their third in a row; however, we should take some positives from the loss. After a devastating series loss to the Angels out in sunny California, they once again lost in a painful fashion.First, Garrett Olson went a little more than six shutout innings, and looked nothing like the wide-eyed kid who could not keep his pitches in the strike zone last year. It?s too bad he didn?t get the decision; however, the A?s starter, Dana Eveland was just as good on the mound as he threw seven shutout innings and allowed only three hits.Emil Brown had three hits, including the game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, to decide the game. Rajai Davis drove in the other run for Oakland on the night with a bases loaded infield single off Jamie Walker. The Orioles fought back in the ninth and tied the score thanks to a Ramon Hernandez RBI. Jim Johnson took the loss in the tenth; however, he?s ...

O's Lose to Rays, 8-1; The Rundown...
2008-05-01 16:59:00 There was not much to yesterday's game at for the Orioles. We entrusted our young pitching to carry us, but an explosive Tampa Bay and a stellar performance by their starting pitcher Andy Sonnanstine's dominant doomed Baltimore. As well, thanks to a five-run seventh by Tampa, the Orioles went quietly into the night as they lost to Tampa by a score of 8-1.Sonnanstine only allowed one run on six hits and struck out five. Veteran Eric Hinske hit a two-run bomb in the fourth; meanwhile, Carlos Pena & Dioner Navarro each drove in two runs -- all in the fateful seventh inning.O's rookie, Matt Albers looked solid through the first six innings, but was charged with the loss. Bob McCrory came into game in the seventh for his major league debut, but got touched up.B-Rob was 2-3, and drove in the the only run for Baltimore. The Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Examiner, Orioles.com, Orioles Hangout has more on the game.Nick Markakis got a rest last night, while the test on Adam L...

White Sox and O's Game Suspended: The Rundown and Quick Hits...
2008-04-29 16:08:00 Starter Daniel Cabrera allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts; however, he had seven walks and hit a batter over 6 1/3 innings for Baltimore.Cabrera's counterpart on the mound, Javier Vazquez was solid in the start for Chicago, giving up four hits, allowing one run while fanning seven over eight full frames. The Baltimore Orioles had multiple chances to put the White Sox in the late innings; however, in the bottom of the 11th, George Sherill gave up a solo homer to Chicago?s Juan Uribe to tie the game ? again ? 3-3.Huff getting tossed from the game for losing his temper was stupid, Melvin Mora being picked off at first by Bobby Jenks, as well as Adam Jones (as much as I love the kid) made a foolish turn at third and got himself out to end the ninth.Out of mercy, the game was suspended in the 11th inning. This road trip must bite for Baltimore, but they have played strong and competitive baseball, thus, we could not ask for anything more from them. At this point, I'm a lit...

Jones', Albers & Millar's Big Night; O's Down Rays, 4-3; The Rundown
2008-04-15 16:57:00 Photo Gallery: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Baltimore Orioles, April 15thLast night at the Yard, the Baltimore Orioles continued their very strong start to the 2008 campaign by defeating Toronto, 4-3. Despite giving up a 2-run homer to Alex Rios, to almost put a scare into Oriole fans, George Sherill closed out the game, picking up his sixth save. What a strange feeling to be atop of the AL East ? um, for now?Kevin Millar had a great night, driving in three and hitting 2-run homer; meanwhile, Adam Jones had his best game as an Oriole, going 3 for 3 with two steals. As well, Melvin Mora, Brian Roberts and Luke Scott also had two hits.Another youngster was impressive last night ? Matt Albers. The big kid went five innings, and only gave up a single run. Perhaps after this start, he might be on his way to earning a permanent spot in the starting rotation. He was helped greatly by Jim Johnson for a few innings, and the tandem of Jamie Walker and Chad Bradford who kept the Jays off the board unt...

One Bad Inning Does The O's In; The Rundown & The O's Bloggers Speak...
2008-04-14 16:46:00 Things were looking so good for the Orioles on Sunday -- that is until the fifth inning. The young, but powerful Tampa lineup bashed Brian Burres, who until then had pitched four solid innings of no-run ball.B.J. Upton hit a three-run home run, Carl Crawford hit a two-run single for, & Akinori Iwamura drove in a run to send Tampa on the way to a 6-2 win.Nick Markakis hit his first homer, while Brian Roberts went 2-for-5. Burres (1-1) was charged with the loss during his horrible fifth inning where was charged with all six runs.Tall and huge (6'9"!!) Jeff Niemann pitched six strong innings in his big league debut, and he was masterful, only allowing one run on six hits and struck out five. He earned the win, and the aggressive Tampa Bay Rays took two out of three from the Orioles, using the big inning to down the Orioles.Baltimore comes home tonight to face a Jays team that may be equally as tough as the Rays.Match-ups: Monday: Albers (1-0, 0.00) vs. McGowan (0-0, 3.27)Tuesday: ...

The Week In Review; Luis Hernandez Chats With Amber; Rundown...
2008-04-07 20:08:00 Folks, the Baltimore Orioles are 4-1 and sitting atop the division. It?s been a good week for fans as the Birds split the series with the improved Rays and have taken three straight from the Seattle Mariners, supposed contenders in the AL West. We go for the series sweep this afternoon & so far and we have seen a little of everything from everyone. The starting pitching still concerns me, and the Orioles still may not have enough offense; alas, we are on top of the Red Sox, Yankees and Jays.As today is Monday, what do you think the week holds? Do we keep the streak alive? What do you think of Trembley? The shortstop situation? Huff? Jones and Scott? Also, what do you think of the classic ?Oriole Magic? song being replaced before the game before with a song by the group, ?Saliva?? Ok, I am a little split on this -- the "Oriole Magic" song is very outdated; however, it's uniquely Baltimore and something that I at least have looked forward to hearing before each and every game.Although t...

2008-04-06 06:31:00 The red hot Orioles won against last night as they beat the Mariners, 6-4. Luke Scott had a big night as he went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI, Melvin Mora had 3 hits, & Matt Albers got the win in relief after Adam Loewen left in the fifth inning. The Mariners homers, both two run shots from Jose Vidro and Jose Lopez; however, Baltimore took the lead in the fifth thanks to a base loaded walk and added another run in the seventh thanks to an Adam Jones sacrifice fly.George Sherill got his third save of the season; meanwhile, Miguel Batista took the loss for Seattle.***Well, after going to York, Pa., this afternoon, a bunch of baseball fans & myself were talking about the occasion this afternoon, and then the talk turned to the Baltimore Orioles. It was not good. For the most part, a lot of people who I talked to followed the Orioles still, but had almost no interest in attending a game at Camden Yards these days. The Rundown: The 5th Starter; The Saga of Gibbons, Spring Training Home, Ev
2008-03-28 18:34:00 Well, the 2008 regular season is upon us, and the good news is we now know who our fifth starter is --- Brian Buress. I figured he'd get the nod after his strong start, and like I said the other day, he was a great spot starter for the first half of the season, but he wilted and it seemed the more time went on, the less effective he was.Only time will tell if he can stay consistent throughout the 2008 season. Considering the expectations of the pitching staff, he'll be given ample opportunity to get a permanent shot in holding down the role.***After everything, Jay Gibbons may not be suspended, after all.In a piece in the Baltimore Sun yesterday, "The commissioner's office and the players union are negotiating changes to Major League Baseball's drug policy in the wake of the Mitchell Report, and the result could be the rescinding of Gibbons' 15-day suspension for violating the substance-abuse prevention program."Ok, if he's not going to be suspended -- if I were Andy MacPhail,...

Special Elections Rundown
2008-03-06 01:51:00 There presently are 6 vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives, and over the next several weeks special elections will be held to determine who serves out the remainder of those terms. The former incumbent's party has the advantage in each of the races, but only three of the races are considered safe retentions. Here's a quick rundown of the six special elections. CA-12 April 8 open primary, June 3 potential runoff Five candidates are vying to replace the late Tom Lantos in this overwhelmingly Democratic district. Jackie Speier, who was endorsed by Lantos for the general election before he died, is a heavy favorite to succeed him in the special election. Should any candidate receive 50% of the vote in the open primary that candidate will win the election outright, otherwise the top finishers from the Democratic, Republican, and Green parties will square off in the runoff. IL-14 March 8 Republican Jim Oberweiss faces off against Democrat Bill Foster for former House S...

MASN, One-Year Later; Spring Training Rundown...
2008-02-26 07:37:00 It's one in the morning, and I'm up and sick as hell; thus, I'm going to go over the latest and greatest in Oriole-land.As most fans know by now, MASN will show about quarter of it's games in HD in 2008 for both the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles.MASN?s HD schedule includes key match-ups with the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and Braves, as well as the Phillies, Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Marlins, and Rays. The network will provide HD telecasts for all six inter-league games between the Nationals and Orioles. It seems like they are saving the high-def broadcasts for the most popular teams to stroll through the region rather than just random games. I sort of sensed this, as I'd assume based on the transient nature of the region, those teams would be represented. As posted previously, this would point MASN in the right direction to making itself into a great sports network; however, I still think the network needs to take more steps in order to become the cream of the crop.I'...

Orioles Decide To Expand Their Talent Focus; The Rundown
2008-02-18 20:15:00 A glaring weakness in the Baltimore Orioles scouting system is finally being looked at. Despite the leaps and bounds the organization has made in rebuilding its minor league and getting new blood, their attempts at getting internationals hails in comparison to the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox. According to the Orioles.com, Spencer Fordin, Baltimore is taking a new approach to scouting on the international front. The organization will start to look at new avenues of talent, including other areas of Latin America, along with Asia. Andy MacPhail has tabbed John Stockstill, a member of the scouting team to spearhead the effort. From the Orioles.com: "We need to be more involved. Over a third of the players that play in the Major Leagues are from outside the country," said MacPhail. "I don't think it's realistic to think we're going to jump into the deep end and be right there. I think it's more going to be a function of trying to ascertain the unique qualities of each market and ...

The World of Jay Payton; The Rundown...
2008-02-17 02:33:00 Jay Payton isn't sure how long he'll be in Baltimore.Honestly, I don't know if he came into the situation fully aware of Baltimore's struggles or if he signed hoping he'd have somewhere to play everyday, but I figured that he was not happy in an O's uniform. Whether or not, he stays, I think he's better off going into a scenario more suited for him -- on a winning team where he plays semi-regularly."I could be here all year, I could be here half the year, I could be here another five days," he said Saturday upon his early arrival at spring training camp.Payton has one season left on the two-year, $9 million contract he signed before the 2007 season. But is there a spot on the roster for a 35-year-old who batted .256 last year?He also adds:"I know I'm probably not the quote-unquote favorite, but this is the fourth year I've gone into spring training as the fourth outfielder and I've gotten 400 at-bats every year," Payton said. "So I'm not going to worry about my status too...

Thoughts on Trembley, The Road Ahead and the Rundown....
2008-02-13 22:51:00 For most Oriole fans, the upcoming year may be hard to stomach, but the Baltimore Orioles may be in good hands with Dave Trembley. The team may not make much of an impact in the standings, but look at things from afar, we could do a lot worse than the current skipper. As we got to observe to an extent last season, Trembley brings a no-nonsense approach to managing and teaching the game.He may come off as gruff sometimes, but he seems to be firm, but fair.Despite expectations of nothing but the worst, Tremebley seems to show the patience, and maturity that's needed for a team in the rebuilding stage. That being said, hopefully he'll have a long tenure in Baltimore, but things as they are right now, he seems to be a leader that the team needs. We'll see how the saga turns out. Although the team is surely building up for the future; alas, the team still know that it has to play to win as many games as they can in 2008.Meanwhile, the Sun's Roch Kubatko reports that the Orioles will b...

Bedard: The Day After; The Rundown & the Blogosphere...
2008-02-09 17:34:00 Well, morning everyone. Considering everything that has gone down in the past two weeks, Friday was definitely a great day for the Baltimore organization. As we know, the two teams closed the deal, sending outfielder Adam Jones, left-handed reliever George Sherrill and three minor league pitching prospects -- Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio -- to the Orioles in exchange for Erik Bedard. While there are some people who really dislike the trade for the fact we traded a good pitcher like Erik Bedard, I'll say this -- anytime you can trade one guy for five, especially in the state the Orioles are currently in - you do it.Yes, the team is sadly sacrificing talent for the road ahead, especially in giving up Bedard; however, this move is about the future and not the here and now. Obviously, the Mariners needed to get Bedard to compete in a tough AL West with the Angels.A lot of people have argued with me about the merits of trading an ace, but the bottom line is that the Oriole...

Orioles Quick Hits; The Rundown
2008-01-25 17:14:00 Like I have said time and time again, despite the lack of fans going to games at Oriole Park Camden at Yards for the past several years, fans do care very much for the team.If the losing would stop, and the team could be one that connects with the community, the fans will return. If you take a look at Roch's blog, message boards like the expansive Orioles Hangout, The Baltimore Sun and Orioles.com, as well also as popular team blogs like Camden Chat, the Wayward O, Oriole Magic, Oriole Central and countless others, the rabid fan interest and opinions are still there.Ray Frager, in an article in the Baltimore Sun commented on the fan situation by saying this:"You might think Baltimore fans have grown indifferent to the Orioles, their interest diminished by a decade of losing baseball. But people clearly still care a lot.At The Sun, we can see how any shred of Orioles news piles up page views at baltimoresun.com, often outpacing Ravens news. My Rundown of the Presidential Races
2008-01-18 01:57:00 I must admit I have been flummoxed on this blog lately. I previously endorsed John Edwards as the best candidate for the Democratic nomination and ultimately the presidency, and because of that I found myself with a form of writer's block. On one hand I wanted to forcefully advocate for Edwards, and on the other I not only wanted to maintain a bit of objectivity on the blog, but also did not feel it was right for me, as a Democrat, to try and sandbag the other candidates.I decided instead to discuss how I feel about the race and avoid the news chasing and commentary that clogs the mind and, in my view, destroys any possibility of making one's mind up without floods of remembered media slogans and the prevailing meme of the moment of the vapid cable news talk shows.Indeed, although the mainstream media seems to have learned some lessons from its gullibility with the Bush administration, it still maintains the destructive habit of trying to "profitize" the news. Since profits and...
