Something from the outer space, International Space Station and Discovery shuttle will soon get back from space after they accomplish their new mission. And, this time they’re out there to collect a ton of space station junk, surplus gear and completed science experiment apparatus. On the other side India’s maiden moon mission Chandrayaan I is still collecting data and analysis about what went wrong. Apparently its going to take another couple of years, may be. ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair said, “We had anticipated some problems at the beginning and wanted to complete important experiments much earlier. About 95% of data collection has been completed and analysis will take another six months to two years.” After ISRO’s launch of Bhuvan, India’s version of Google Earth there has been hardly any progress from their end. Recently Reliance Communications proclaimed major strategic initiatives aimed at growing the mobile telecom and Internet penetration in rural India. According to a statement issued from RCOM, its rural enabler blueprint is based on a three-pronged strategy. “Drive internet penetration across rural and sub-urban terrain, thrust on high impact machine-to-machine solutions, and provide value-added services specific to rural needs under Grameen VAS initiative across 500,000 villages,” said the release. BSNL’s plans to roll out wireless Internet technology, WiMAX to the rural areas will move a step ahead coming 25th when the bids from the vendors to commission the project shall be opened. This project would establish 7000 Common Service Centers (CSC) across the country from where the WiMAX facility would be operable from. The project is estimated to cost 1500 crore rupees. The company had only recently awarded the contract for supplying WiMAX base stations in Kerala to the American company, Harris Stratex. The plans are ambitious not just because of the potential value it can offer in rural governance over a long term, but also because it will help India move forward in enabling more citizens make use of Internet access. Many potential iPhone customers in the US have been irked by Apple’s exclusive deal with AT&T, but that marriage is now coming under pressure from another source: small, rural cellphone providers. At issue is the the fact that AT&T does not offer the iPhone for sale in many rural areas where they only offer roaming service. And, since the exclusive deal prohibits the local cell providers from selling the iPhone, that means that inhabitants of those areas—like much of Vermont, and rural areas in 15 other states—will not be recipients of the iPhone love. So it is that the Rural Cellular Association, a trade group of 80 small rural providers, plans to petition the FCC to look into the legality of exclusive deals such as the one between AT&T and Apple. According to the Wall Street Journal, most of these small carriers serve 500,000 people or fewer, though those numbers do add up. Brenda and I said our good byes and gave our thanks to the folks at Beaver Creek Farms and headed on past Bill shortly after he left. It can be depressing leaving a lively place and getting back on the road. As soon as we start to get to know people we have to leave. We have done this many times during this cross country trip. We made a quick stop down the road, and headed to Walnut Cove after. Angie came along from Bever Creek Farms to this point and she took some of Brenda's jeans back home to wash. The rest of the laundry Brenda took to the laundry mat which was near. A previous lead for places to stay didn't pan out, and so Brenda got on the phone. She contacted the Walnut Cove Police Department, and shortly there after Deputy Sink arrived. Bill was taking a bit longer then normal, and we learned from Deputy Sink that Bill was about a mile north of us; turns out he took a short cut.
