From Russia With Love
2009-08-05 12:02:00
I don?t know when Urdu became my identity. It is ascribed one and I love it; really. Born and raised speaking Punjabi, I also had to learn foreign languages (like English and Russian) to move about in faster lanes of life but I always express my deeper emotions and inner feelings in Urdu. Two of my books Izhar (Expressions), Ret Pe Tehreer (Written on the Sand)} are in Urdu. This (Urdu) sophisticated language facilitates you to do that. Anyone speaking Urdu in a crowd of people speaking alien languages is automatically a company.I realized my love for the language when I was learning Russian at National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad. When my Russian teacher Alica used to say, ?I have learnt more Urdu than I have taught you Russian.? When Sakina Mirkhajevna used to ask us to sing her songs in Urdu; she could not understand the meanings but, ?I enjoy the sweetness with which words flow,? she used to tell.I learnt English the hard way. I was at a professional academy and or...

Global Currency Proposed By Russia
2009-07-11 06:53:00
Writing in the World Order of Baha’u'llah, Shoghi Effendi envisioned the future: A mechanism of world inter-communication will be devised, embracing the whole planet, freed from national hindrances and restrictions, and functioning with marvellous swiftness and perfect regularity. A world metropolis will act as the nerve centre of a world civilization, the focus towards which the unifying forces of life will converge and from which its energizing influences will radiate. A world language will either be invented or chosen from among the existing languages and will be taught in the schools of all the federated nations as an auxiliary language to their mother tongue. A world script, a world literature, a uniform and universal system of currency, of weights and measures, will simplify and facilitate intercourse and understanding among the nations and races of mankind. Keeping in mind that the above was written in 1938, you can’t help but be awed by his prophetic vision. We ...

Russia and India Collaborate on Future Space Missions
2009-04-09 19:46:00
It is expected that Russia and India will collaborate in future manned space expeditions. India plans to use Russian experience and equipment in its space program to send a man into orbit within the next five years, and considering the Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Activities in the Field of Human Spaceflight Programme, which was signed by both countries last year, it does seem much more than just a pipe (or in this case, space travel) dream. Read on for more details.

Biden?s speech in Munich: ?Press the reset button?, and then what?
2009-02-26 11:06:00
From 6 to 8 February 2009, more than a dozen heads of state or government, ministers and scores of international experts met for the 45th Munich Security Conference in Germany. There, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden presented a much-anticipated indication of America?s foreign policy under President Barack Obama?s new administration. As Russian officials hope that U.S.-Russian relations will improve under Obama?s presidency, the Biden speech would have been keenly examined in Moscow. So what signals did the U.S. Vice President send to Russia from Munich? Actually, nothing very reassuring. It seems that Vice President Biden in Munich was purposefully vague on many important international issues. His speech contained many hints and some colourful but not too meaningful rhetoric, like this now famous line:it?s time to press the reset button and to revisit the many areas where we can and should be working together with Russia. If only world matters were as easy to reset as a personal computer...

Russia orders 70 new nuclear missiles | World news | guardian.co.uk
2008-12-24 02:36:00
More at the guardian.co.uk: “Russia is to increase sharply its production of strategic nuclear missiles, throwing down the gauntlet to the US president-elect, Barack Obama, who would have to deal with the Kremlin's response to US missile defence plans in Europe.A senior government official in Moscow said the Russian military would commission 70 strategic missiles over the next three years. It was unclear whether sea-launched ballistic missiles were included in this figure, but military experts said it could represent up to a fourfold increase on the rate of production of land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).”-- This is a frightening development. I do hope we don't get into a military spending contest with the Russians. We can't afford it and I'm not sure it's the best way to go.

Muslim Separatists Kill Vladikavkaz Mayor
2008-11-29 09:01:00
Vladikavkaz is the capital of North Ossetia. A group called Kataib al-Khoul (Jama'at Kata'ib al-Hawl ) claimed responsibility on the Kavkaz website of the Chechen rebels. This is the name of the Ossetian Muslim guerrillas. Considering that Ossetia is majority Christian, I can't understand their agenda, which is an Islamic Republic in a place where the population is 70% Christian.North Ossetia is the Russian republic in the North Caucasus where the Beslan Massacre occurred. There have been some bombings there lately, and there was a suicide bombing at a bus stop by a Muslim woman that killed 12 people. This popular post of mine goes into the Beslan Massacre and some of the ethnic issues that seemed to drive it.In short, there are conflicts between the Ossetians and the Ingush. The Ingush were expelled by Stalin in 1944, and 1/3 of them died. When they came back in the mid-1950's, Ossetians had taken much of their land. Also, North Ossetians for the most part back the genocidal war...
