Navy football overcomes halftime deficit to defeat Rutgers
2008-09-21 17:03:00 In danger of falling to a 1-3 mark, the Navy Midshipmen overcame a 14-6 halftime deficit against Rutgers, kicking a late 4th quarter field goal and scoring a key interception to secure the 23-21 upset win. The Annapolis Capital noted that returned Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada and fullback Eric Kettani led the final scoring drive in the game's closing minutes.Navy's triumph before an Annapolis sellout crowd kept Midshipmen hopes viable to reach the six wins needed for EagleBank Bowl eligibility. On a side political note, presidential candidate John McCain attended the first quarter of game action but didn't stick around to see the impressive Mid comeback. In other D.C. area game action, Virginia Tech scored a close cut 20-17 win at North Carolina, Maryland walloped Eastern Michigan by a 51-24 count, Howard gave up the first 51 points against Florida A&M en route to its own 51-24 loss, Georgetown was annihilated 47-7 at Yale and James Madison overcame a three touchdown ...

Navy football faces virtual must win vs. Rutgers
2008-09-20 18:04:00 The Navy Midshipmen face a virtual must win college football game this weekend against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. While competitive throughout, Navy has been beset by injuries en route to a 1-2 mark, the one win coming against FCS team Towson. A loss this weekend would leave Navy at 1-3, in serious danger of not gaining the six wins needed for an EagleBank Bowl berth. The Midshipmen hope that the expected fulltime returns of qb Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada and fullback Eric Kettani will be enough to overcome a similarly reeling 0-2 Rutgers squad. On a side note, presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (and his Secret Service detail) are expected in attendance at Annapolis for the game. (3:30 p.m., CBSCS, WTOP/1050).Elsewhere, the Virginia Tech Hokies face a tough ACC test at undefeated North Carolina (3:30 p.m. WJLA/ABC/7, WTEM/980), the Maryland Terrapins hope to avoid the upset hosting Eastern Michigan (1 p.m., ESPN360, WJFK/106.7), the Georgetown Hoyas need a miracle at Yale (12:30...

Fresno State at Rutgers- Position, Individual and Unit Comparisons
2008-08-31 11:40:00 It's a brand new season, so all stats are for last year. This is the first meeting between the two teams, and it is the furthest the Bulldogs have ever travelled. Rutgers is coming off a 8-5 season, with losses at home to Maryland, #20 Cincinnati, #6 West Virginia, and at Louisville and #16 Connecticut, and beat South Florida when they were ranked #2 in the country. They are coming off a 52-30 win over Ball State in the International Bowl. The bulldogs return much of a team that went 9-4 with wins over Kansas State and Georgia Tech.Quarterbacks- Rutgers returns senior quarterback Mike Teel, who is coming off an impressive year having completed 203 of 349 attempts for a 58.2 percentage. He threw for 3,147 yards and 20 touchdowns. He is not much of a duel threat, however, having netted -49 yards rushing last season. He passed for 9 yards per attempt for a 145.4 passing efficiency, 2nd for returning QBs in the Big East. Fresno State's senior QB Tom Brandstater went 211 of 337 for a 6...

Red Sox Beat A's Behind Masterful Daisuke--UCONN Women Defeat Rutgers To Ad
2008-04-02 11:45:00 Daisuke Matsuzaka was completely ready to attone for his mediocre outing in his native Japan. And he did JUST that, and more! He started the game by striking out the first two batters, and except for one mistake to Cust, a home run, he sailed, he breezed, he cruised through 6 2/3 innings, giving up that solo home run while only surrendering two hits, walking none (what a change!) and striking out a convincing nine. The batting stars were Kevin Youkilis, who tied Steve Garvey's record with his 193 straight error-free games. THAT IS TRULY AMAZING! Okajima, our Darkman, followed his countryman with one full inning of scoreless relief, and then..then it was time for Paps, the REAL Paps, to shine. And shine brightly he did. He breezed through the last inning and a third, striking out three and allowing a goose egg load of hits. The Okie to Paps combination is alive and well, thank you, as long as the Sox starter can get into the 7th inning. Daisuke said this after the game..."It's some...
George Washington women seek redemption vs. Rutgers in NCAAs
2008-03-30 17:48:00 The George Washington Colonials are again faced with a rematch in this year's NCAA women's basketball tournament, this time against a #2 seed Rutgers squad that walloped GW by 25 on the Colonials' own home court. Since that debacle, #6 seed George Washington has run off 22 wins out of 25 games. The late season run includes an upset win over #3 seed California last Monday out on the west coast, decided by a last second jump shot from Sarah-Jo Lawrence. Rutgers though represents another quantum leap in opposition. While George Washington will almost certainly give a better effort in this Sunday afternoon's rematch, the Colonials remain significant underdogs to reach the Elite Eight and will need to be at their very best to win. Nonetheless, reaching the regional semifinal game for a second straight year marks a watershed occasion for the program.Start time will be approximately 2:30 p.m. from Greensboro, N.C. on ESPN2 television and GWRadio.com streaming audio.----Relevant links: ...

NCAA Women?s Basketball Pink T-Shirts (UConn, Rutgers, Maryland, LSU, Oklah
2008-03-17 05:07:00 I am a big fan of NCAA Women’s Basketball. I love the men’s game, of course, but as the men’s game gets more and more influenced by big commercial interests and individual players vying for multi-million dollar NBA contracts, there’s just something about the women’s game that’s “pure”. Coaches can deploy good, fundamental strategy, so you see ...

Top Teams in the Country Lose [David Stefanini]
2007-10-14 18:09:00 For the first time since 1996, the top two teams in the nation lost on the same day. First it was Kentucky upsetting No. 1 LSU in 3OT. This was an amazing game, which came down to Kentucky's defense holding LSU to nothing in the 3OT to pull off the upset. So NO. 2 Cal, was playing their game looking to be the NO. 1 team in the nation. But unranked, Oregon State had different ideas. Oregon State had a 20-14 lead going into the 4th quarter, and was lucky enough to hold on to the 31-28 victory. This season is becoming the season of upsets. People thought for sure LSU and USC were heading for a collision in the national title game. Rutgers was supposed to continue their climb to the football elite, and Michigan was supposed to virtually unstoppable on offense. Now Rutgers is unranked, Michigan was unranked as of Week 2, and both LSU and USC have lost games. The Top 10 will surely be shuffled again this week.It looks as if we are headed to another BCS controversy. Which 1-loss team deserve...

College Football Notes 10.7.08 [J. Mark English]
2007-10-07 13:08:00 Stanford 24, #2 USC 23 - Give it up to the nerds beating the jocks! Stanford, which academic minded first as a school, came into Trojan territory as 41 point underdogs. USC had not lost a game at home in 35 straight games. In their first visit to the Rose Bowl since 1925, the Irish defense, led by the seniors, stepped up to finally give Notre Dame Nation something to smile about.#20 Cincinnati 28, #21 Rutgers 23 - Rutgers was expected to be undefeated by this point in the season. But the Scarlett Knights have crumbled under the weight of expectations. Last week at home against Maryland they were heavy favorites, and lost big to Maryland. This week they had a chance to revenge their loss to Cincinnati on their way to a BCS bid. After taking a 17-7 lead into half time, the Knights blew the game with costly t...

Rutgers Player Withdraws Imus Law Suit
2007-09-12 19:41:00 Kia Vaughn, a Rutgers University basketball player announced on Tuesday that she withdrew a slander and defamation lawsuit had filed against Don Imus and CBS Radio, among other media outlets. The lawsuit stemmed from the outrage Imus caused by referring to the Rutger's women basketball team as "nappy headed ho's," resulting in the radio star's firing. Vaughn, who filed suit hours after it was announced that Imus would receive a $20 million dollar settlement from CBS, had contended that the comments made by Imus had damaged her reputation. The lawsuit also named various media outlets that broadcast Imus' show. A spokeswoman for Vaughn's attorney, Richard Ancowitz, said in a statement that Vaughn had chosen to focus on her education at New Jersey's Rutgers University as a journalism major and as an athlete with the basketball team. "Her strong commitments to both have influenced her decision to withdraw the lawsuit at this time," th...

What Choice Rutgers Team Had? Other than Accepting Imus Apology
2007-04-14 04:40:00 I am glad Imus apologized to the girls and he did get removed from the network, but I also wonder what choice did the girls have, other than 'accepting' his apology?I hope the incident does teach us a bigger lesson: that we do need to think twice before opening our mouths. Everyone has prejudice, and all of us make mistakes, but the only way to get along is to respect each other's lifestyle, be it in the way we dress up, talk, move, eat or drink and be it our race, color or ethnic origin... supporting someone who is merely trying to improve himself or herself, without causing anyone any damage, should not be so difficult. These girls are to be commended to have come this far in their journey to achieve their goals. The least we can do is respect that fact. Now, the only way to move forward, for everyone, is to forgive. Forgiving does not turn a wrong into a right, it merely allows us to continue on our journey without bitterness, without holding the negativity with us forever....

Rutgers team blasts Imus, will meet him - Yahoo! News
2007-04-10 21:28:00 Don't know what good meeting him will do but whatever. Maybe they will come out of the meeting with an appreication for the man that many of us have learned to appreciate over the years. Ya, I am sort've an Imus guy, I guess. He's a shock jock, and all too many times shock jocks go to far--and this isn't the first time for Imus. But I do think he is a little more interesting and entertaining than your average shock jock, and his guest list is usually far more upscale than your average shock jock's (cough, ahem, like Howard Stern who usually can only land porn stars on a good day). What's so amazing to me that this one time Imus gets so much heat. If you listen to his show for any length of time this kind of thing is pretty much the daily drivel--especially coming from the guy in the glass room, can't remember his name. No one is safe, blacks, jews, italians, women, gays, lawyers, the elderly, the young, celebrities, politicians, sports figures...and on and ond. I've often wo...

Rutgers Shocks UCONN; Wins Big East Tournament
2007-03-07 09:53:01 A 17-4 run by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights propelled them to a 55-47 victory over the UCONN women to give them their first Big East Tournament crown. This marks the fourth straight time that the regular season champ hasn’t won the postseason tournament title. It also ended UCONN’s 15 game winning streak. Essence Carson led the way for the Scarlet Knights with 15 points. Matee Ajavon had 11 points and Kia Vaughn had 10 points. For UCONN, they were led by Charde Houston, who had 12 points. Renee Montgomery had 11 points while Tina Charles and Mel Thomas both added 8 points. Notes and Observations: The starting five was Montgomery, Thomas, Greene, Charles, and Houston. Charles spent the last 10 minutes of the first half with her ass planted on the bench because she got into foul trouble. Of the Huskies who saw significant time in this game, she shot the best making 3 of her 4 shots. After scoring 20 points in the semifinals, Greene didn’t have one of her better games...

UCONN Men Win Ugly Against Rutgers
2007-02-22 15:22:01 Well UCONN fans, if you are accustomed to going to the Big East Tournament in NYC and used to seeing your Huskies play on Thursday, well make arrangements to be there. Just make them for a day earlier than normal. Jerome Dyson led the Huskies in scoring again as they defeated the Scarlett Knights of Rutgers to clinch a berth in the Big East Tournament. Dyson had 17 points and Jeff Adrien chipped in 14 points. AJ Price also hit double figures with 10 points. For Rutgers, they were led by Adrian Hill and JR Inman who both scored 15 points. Inman had missed the previous game against UCONN with an injury. The first was rather ugly as both teams had trouble scoring and Rutgers got out to the early lead. Rutgers got the lead up to 8 at 22-14 before a 14-1 run in the last 5 minutes by the Huskies gave them the halftime lead at 28-23. UCONN built the lead up to 12 in the second half but an 11-0 run by Rutgers got them within 1 point. UCONN’s last basket came at the 4:20 mark but they ...

UCONN Women Battle Past Rutgers
2007-02-07 14:58:01 Led by the double-doubles of three players, UCONN was able to withstand a late run by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to win by the final score of 60-50. Charde Houston, Tina Charles and Kalana Greene’s double doubles were the first by 3 UCONN players since January 9th, 1994, when Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters and Jamelle Elliot accomplished the same feat. Houston had 16 points and 11 rebounds while both Charles and Greene each had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Renee Montgomery rounded the Huskies in double figures with 10 points. Rutgers was led by former UCONN recruit Kia Vaughn, who had 16 points and 8 rebounds while Tina Charles best friend, Epiphanny Prince, had 11 points. Rutgers got out to an early 3-0 lead on an Essence Carson 3 point shot but that was their only lead of the game. A Charles lay up put the Huskies up for good at the 16 minute mark.
