Ruth Kelly is number crunching
2008-02-05 22:40:00
Better Transport has news (on their 1st February blog) that Ruth Kelly and the Department for Transport and spending a lot of time pouring over the numbers of various road schemes around the country. 'Cost Escalation' is now an issue, so here's a quote:"Over the next couple of months I will be taking a firm view of what roads are being prioritised. It's absolutely the case there are tough choices to be made. We will have to look right across the roads programme to see what is desirable. What we need to do is have a rigorous look at the figures and be clear about what we can afford and what we cannot afford? I hope to be in a position in the next few months to make a definitive statement about where we are on cost and which roads we are committed to seeing delivered"So it's not really a surprise when our spies report that Roy Oldham stated at the last full Council meeting of TMBC that he was seeking an urgent meeting with Kelly. Better Transport has news (on their 1st February blog) that Ruth Kelly and the Department for Transport are spending a lot of time pouring over the relative costs of various road schemes around the country. 'Cost Escalation' is now an issue, so here's a quote:"Over the next couple of months I will be taking a firm view of what roads are being prioritised. Has Ruth Kelly met with David Abrahams or not?
2008-01-16 08:28:00
The following is taken from Hansard written answers 14th Jan 2008:Chris Huhne: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether she and her predecessor have met (a) Mr. David Abrahams and (b) representatives of Mr. Abrahams' companies since 2004.Jim Fitzpatrick: My right hon. Friends the Secretary of State and her predecessors have not attended meetings in their official capacity since 2004 with Mr. David Abrahams or representatives of companies registered to Mr Abrahams. Now, is it just me, or is the answer to the question dodging something? The question asked if they had met, which I presume to mean, well... er.... met. The answer only tells us that they did not attend meetings in their official capacity. Have they met or not?
Ruth kelly says we need transparency on lost DSA data (Yeah...right)
2007-12-17 20:04:00
I've just been listening to Ruth Kelly waffling for all her worth on Radio 5. The details of three million candidates for the driving theory test have gone missing from a contractor's (supposedly) secure room in the States. Why we have to send this kind of information to the US on a Hard Drive is beyond me. The data which contained names, addresses and phone numbers went missing in May. What did Ruth have to say when asked why the public have only just been informed? Well basically she said that she didn't know because she took over the post after the data was lost. And when asked If her predecessor knew about the loss, she said she wasn't sure. Just great.Ruth then came out with Labour's favourite word of late - transparency. Apparently we must have transparency about the way public data is stored and transferred. Laughingly Ruth said that they public want their data to be shared. Radio 5's interviewer correctly pointed out that we don't want our data shared with everyone.Wh...
Does Ruth Kelly wear a hair shirt?

Perhaps more than any other in recent times, this government's attempts to resolve the inherent contradictions of capitalism through spin - if not concrete reality - are becoming less and less credible. Last week* saw the release of a discussion paper by the Department for Transport that is a perfect illustration of a new and what will prove to be intractable conundrum - how to expand road, rail and air networks whilst seeking to curb CO2 emissions. The paper signals a disdain for the rail alternatives and sees a future where 'carbon-free' automobiles will need to be accommodated on an ever widening and expanding motorway and road network. Furthermore, they are seeking to fund this expansion through private investment - a logical conclusion to the 'Design Build Finance Operate' initiatives of the 1990s. It's perhaps not so coincidental that two of the largest private road building firms have been courting each other in recent weeks and now look like they will merge shortly: Car...
Ruth Kelly spent public money on Labour propaganda.
2007-11-04 22:31:00
Hidden in a side column of the BBC News website (political page) Ruth Kelly has apologised for breaking rules on using public money for party political material. She spent some of her £10,000-a-year communications allowance on a newsletter which repeatedly referred to "Labour".According to the BBC she said she had not meant to break any rules but accepted "greater care" should have been taken over the words.Greater care with the words? This wasn't a simple typo. She did not just mix up where and were. You can't write Labour all over a newsletter by mistake. Unless of course she was repeatedly trying to tell the newsletter readers about the New Harbour and got the spelling wrong several times. But hey, you never know.

New Labour Ruth Kelly 'faith schools' play no part in segregation?
2007-04-10 19:44:00
Messianic Ruth Kelly - where does she live..did you see her enquiry into cohesion that is dangerous, counterproductive and blinkeredThe enquiry set up by Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly aimed at finding ways to challenge "barriers to integration and cohesion" has published an interim report that the National Secular Society has condemned as contradictory and counterproductive. The Commission for Integration and Cohesion's report suggests that "faith schools" play no part in segregation while at the same time admitting that school is probably the best way to break down barriers between communities. The report dismisses those who oppose faith schools on the grounds that they are divisive as "obsessed", and accuses them of using it as a 'red herring' yet, at the same time, an opinion poll commissioned to go with the report concludes that "Going to school or college together emerged as the top way of encouraging interaction." It cites as evidence 47% of people "identifying using share...
