Rwanda?s refugees and smearing Cindy McCain
2008-10-19 06:35:00
The NYTimes has a story about Cindy McCain in today’s paper. Most of the report is gossip of old news, printed to gladden the hearts of envious gossipers everywhere with it’s nitpicking thoroughness. Yet even the “good deeds” of Cindy McCain’s life have been spun in a way that stresses the negative. I don’t know much about Cindy ...

Rwanda still suffers from the horrors of 1994
2008-01-17 22:11:00
A BBC News report reveals that Rwanda still suffers from the ideology that inspired the 1994 genocide.Last month's parliamentary report said old books "distorting history" had been found in libraries. Some claimed, for instance, that Tutsis should not be considered Rwandan. Happily, 6000 teachers are being taught by the Education ministry how to stamp out "genocide ideology in Rwanda. The training, which comes on the back of a recent damning parliamentary report, was last month during the school holidays. Schools re-opened countrywide last week. The Kenyan Daily Nation has some harrowing reports:Some students are reported to have developed a habit of writing to each other anonymous genocide-fuelling letters. One of the letters presented as evidence said, “… ni inzoka, baraturambiye kandi tuzabicaâ€, which is literally translated to mean “… they are snakes. We are fed up with them and we will kill themâ€.The report says that at the Institute Prespyterien de Kirinda, Karongi D...

Rwanda from Genocide to Recovery
2007-12-13 17:13:00
One of the moments I've most looked forward to in the early part of travel is visiting Rwanda. The genocide that the nation survived is a defining event in the modern era and, touching closer to home for myself, it was Canadian General Romeo Dallaire who led the UN effort here and offered a nearly solitary voice calling on the western world to intervene - a call that was patently ignored until the genocide was all but over and nearly 1,000,000 had died. We're told that the genocide was the culmination of tribal conflicts between warring Hutus and Tutsis that stretch back far beyond European colonization. In reality, this is a bald faced lie that designed to protect the tender conscience of the developed world and serves only to stop us from understanding the true nature of the killings, and the integral role of the west bringing them about. The first to colonize Rwanda were the Germans in the late 1800s. At that time they found 18 distinct tribes living in relative peace throughout ...

Serial killer arrested in Rwanda
2007-12-06 15:23:00
A serial killer was arrested recently in Rwanda. He had killed seven people, all of whom are described in this story as being "cyclists," and he buried all the victims in a pit in his garden: Twenty-seven year-old Aloys Tubarimo was arrested on November 26 in Bugesera District, Eastern Province, and is being held at Ririma Prison ... Tubarimo has confessed to killing seven cyclists from Bugesera and says his target was eight. The suspect who lives in Rukora village, Gakamba Cell, Mayanja Sector in Bugesera, said he killed the seven in a period of two months and buried all of them in a pit in his garden. ... Sources say Tubarimo used to get cyclists especially from Nyamata to take him home. After reaching home, he would reportedly give them fruits and drinks and then attack them using a hammer. He is among the suspects of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide but was released because he was a minor at the time of the crime. After his release, according to residents, Tubarimo resorted to thi...
Gorillas of Rwanda
2007-12-02 18:13:00
Many thanks to all of my readers for bearing with a length delay in new posts since I left for Africa. It's been a few weeks of merciless, ass jarring travel through that ultimately led to the portion of my current travels that had most captured my imagination - Rwanda. After camping overnight in the northwestern town of Ruhengheri, my first full day in the country was the gorilla trek in the Parc du Volcans - first brought to the world's attention by Dian Fossey and her groundbreaking study of the mountain gorilla.A 6am wake up call had us at the trail head at the mediocre hour of 9am, a level of efficiency I affectionately refer to as 'African time'. When we did get rolling it was bliss stretching the legs as we hiked through the the village hugging the volcanic slopes towards the protected parkland. We moved towards the jungle under the escort of a guide plus two armed members of the Rwandan military. The latter being an overcautious assurance of safety due to the ongoing c...

Uganda 1966, Uganda 2007
2007-11-23 05:03:00
1966, I don?t remember exactly but I think it was in July, I went for the first time to Uganda. I was then working in Rwanda as a young man for the same Swiss Government agency I am working today. It had though a different name. I was 23 years old and what they called ?Swiss Volunteer for Development?. Something similar to the Peace Corps of the United States. The salary was meager but we did not care. After all a goat cost something like 50 cents and a packet of cigarettes 20 cents. That went very fine with the beer at 15 cents, the half liter. Rwanda is a bit a landlocked place. The capital city, Kigali, had at that time 5?000 inhabitants, today there are a half a million. No hotels and only one place to eat that could be called something close to ?restaurant?. Almost no shops either, just some stalls along the road. Our project was to build up an agricultural co-operative with sales outlets all over the country for farmers to buy things they needed. Saws, seeds, clothing material...
