Ryan Braun Contract Details
2008-05-17 01:34:00
Tom Haudricourt has the details on Ryan Braun's new extension.  It's a tricky one, because it's not yet known whether Braun will be arbitration-eligible after the 2009 season.  It won't be known for sure until November of '09.  If he is arb-eligible at that time he'll make an extra $6MM. It's looking like Braun will earn $4.5MM (including a signing bonus) for his three pre-arb years.  Then he'll get $18.5MM for his three arb years (less than 80% of what Hanley Ramirez will get for the same slice of his career).  After that Braun gave up his first two free agent years for $22MM.  That's also significantly less than Ramirez will receive his first two years of free agent eligibility.

Ryan Braun Signs Extension With Brewers
2008-05-15 11:08:00
10:50am: More details from Haudricourt. The deal includes a $2.3MM signing bonus that will be paid this year and added to the $455K Braun was already set to make. In addition, there is an escalator clause that would up the value of the deal to $51MM if Braun's service time were to fall under "Super-2" status following the '09 season. That is not likely to happen as Braun acumulated only 129 days of service time in '07 and "Super-2" status usually requires 130-140 days. Also, the first 4 years of the deal include a complete no-trade clause. 10:06am: Haudricourt is now reporting that contract is 8 years in length and will include the '08 season and will be worth $45MM. This seems to confirm that the Brewers are buying out Braun's first two years of free agency. 9:08am: Continuing the trend of signing young stars to long-term deals long before arbitration-eligibility, Tom Haudricourt is reporting that the Brewers have inked Ryan Braun to a 7-year deal. The amount of money is not k...
Ryan Braun adjusting to new home in LF, popularity after NL ROY award (AP)
2008-03-03 23:45:00
Ryan Braun plopped down at a clubhouse table next to some minor leaguers for a breakfast feast. It was the glazed doughnut that grabbed his teammates’ attention and led to a little harassment about his figure. “Hey, I’m cool with it,” Braun said coyly. Suddenly, Braun is getting attention for everything he does. Read the full ...
Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Brewers pound out 7-1 win over Athletics in
2008-02-28 23:49:00
Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun wasted no time flexing their muscles. Fielder had an RBI double and towering sacrifice fly in his first two at-bats, and Braun crushed a tape-measure home run in his first trip to the plate and the Milwaukee Brewers cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the exhibition ...

Will Ryan Braun Suck in 2008?
2008-01-24 01:17:00
Hype gets a bad rap or, to put it into a confusing pun, hype is hype-less even for the hyper. That?s not to say hype isn?t understood to a degree. Most notably, Gartner, a technology research company out of Stamford, Conn., figured out what all the hype was about, coining the term "hype cycle." The "Hype Cycle" explains the over-enthusiasm or "hype" and subsequent disappointment that typically
How Good Will Ryan Braun Be in 2008?
2008-01-13 14:13:00
The move of Brewers'ROY 3B Ryan Braun to LF following the signing of CF Mike Cameron got me to thinking what could be expected of Ryan Braun if he exactly matched last season's production of 34 HRs, 97 RBI and 14 SB. To do so, I applied my ranking method to just the 2007 stats. To my slight surprise given he had just 452 ABs, he finished as the 6th best player. (FWIW, in a 4x4 mixed league format, he finished 5th ahead of SS Jimmy Rollins.) The bigger question is whether or not a full season's worth of ABs will increase his production proportionately. The main argument against would be his weak walk rate combined with a weak contact rate of 75%. In those 452 Abs, he walked a mere 29 times while striking out 112 times. In his favor is the fact he maintained his AVG and SLG in each month of the season. His OPS dipped to .908 in August only to rebound to .998 in September. His OPS was 1.150 and 1.069 in June and July respectively. While his walk rate was halved in the last two month...
Ryan Braun: Baseballs First Jewish Rookie Of The Year
2007-11-19 05:36:00
(Image: Ryan Braun, Credit: JS Online) It looks as if Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers has just made history by becoming the first Jewish player to become Rookie of the Year.(Jerusalem Post) Ryan Braun became baseball's first Jewish Rookie of the Year. Braun, the slugging third baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers, picked up the award Monday in the National League. In the voting by the Baseball Writers of America, Braun edged Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, 128-126. Although Braun was never raised Jewish by his Israeli dad, he seems to take an immense pride in his Jewish heritage.Note: While Braun will probably decide to remain in the US because of his career, hopefully he will consider signing up with the Israel Baseball League (if he has time during the off season).Content Copyright 2006-2007 of IsraGood. More random rumors and reading material! Baseball Prospectus' Nate Silver discusses Ryan Braun's undeniably terrible defense at third base, suggesting some interesting trade and signing permutations to get him into right field.  Also note that Kevin Kouzmanoff is a butcher at third; maybe the Friars will be in the market for Mike Lowell this winter (a player they've expressed interest in in the past). Awesome headline for this Garrett Atkins article.  Steve King discusses how the Phillies would be a fine fit for a trade, throwing the Dodgers, Twins, Angels, and Astros into the mix as well.  Note that Atkins has a career line of .269/.344/.437 on the road and .336/.399/.528 at Coors. Sid Hartman is hearing that Walt Jocketty could end up in Baltimore. The Daily Herald's Scot Gregor proposes some kind of Jon Garland for Bill Hall swap, or even a Carl Crawford acquisition by the White Sox.  I don't think the Sox and Rays match up too well for that.  I tho...
Braun's Defense Should Cost Him Rookie of the Year
2007-09-28 15:38:00
Milwaukee Brewers 3B Ryan Braun is an amazing hitter. But to call him a butcher on defense is an insult to knife-wielding swine slicers. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to call Braun the worst defensive player of any starter in the Major Leagues. The Brewers lost 9-5 to the San Diego Padres on Thursday, blowing a chance to gain a game on the Chicago Cubs, who had lost earlier in the day. One of the main culprits in the loss was Braun, who committed not one, not two, but three errors at third base.Braun's is fielding is so atrocious, it should be enough for Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to win the National League Rookie of the Year. Will it happen? Probably not. Writers often forget there are two parts to the game and concentrate solely on offensive numbers. And there is no doubt Braun has had an amazing year at the plate, but Tulowitzki isn't that far off. In 440 at-bats, Braun has hit .325/.370/.639, with 24 doubles, 34 HR and 95 RBI. Meanwhile, in 590 at-bats, Tulowitzki h...
A Keeper Question--Ryan Braun vs. Miguel Cabrera
2007-09-19 15:53:00
My response to a question posed on a recent podcast--who would you rather have in 2008, Braun or Cabrera? In a recent podcast, someone posed a theoretical question. Assuming you had to pick either Braun or Miguel Cabrera for 2008, who do you choose? This is about the easiest question to answer, surprisingly, and about the answer I believe there cannot be the slightest doubt among reasonable

Bernie Lincicome has penned/typed an extraordinarily bad defense of Troy Tulowitzki's candidacy for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. In addition to being a truly disastrous piece of prose, it's also completely illogical, not to mention mildly offensive. The best way I can illustrate this is simply to allow you to read it, so, without further ado...Oh, come on. Who's having a better rookie year than Troy Tulowitzki?Ryan Braun. The name that keeps coming up is Ryan Braun of Milwaukee, but anything baseball that happens in Milwaukee must be taken with the same faith as anything baseball that happens in Denver, so who knows?Congratulations are in order for anticipating my response. It's almost like you know that Braun is better, but you're just going to forge ahead anyway. You're a Denver columnist, after all! It's not your job to promote people from Milwaukee! Also, I have no idea what the latter part of that sentence means. It is not that Braun is necessarily better than Tulowit...
Ryan Braun: The Real Natural
2007-09-11 19:18:00
Ryan Braun homered twice last night to bring his season total to 30, sending two misguided pitches into the seats in the first two innings, just like he had done 28 times previously in his brief major league career, just like he has been doing all season long. He’s a pull hitter who doesn’t need to pull everything.  He’s a power hitter who can can hit for average. He’s a burly guy who can steal bases. His name is Ryan Braun, he’s 23 years old, and on his off days, he flies around Milwaukee, protecting the city from crime. —– Mike Piazza and Albert Pujols. That is the list of names who have had rookie seasons that even rival Braun’s in recent memory. Last season, Hanley Ramirez did his best Rickey Henderson impression, going .292/.353/.480 with 17 homers, 119 runs, and 56 stolen bases as a 22-year-old. Fantastic, surely, but not Braun-like. In 2001, Pujols had what many consider to the best rookie season of all time, in which he hit .32...
A Daily Double for Ryan Braun, Rookie of the Year AND MVP?
2007-08-16 02:22:00

TSF's 2007 MLB Midseason Awards
2007-07-09 02:29:00
Here are my midseason awards. I reserve the right to change these by the end of the season. MVP AL: Alex Rodriguez - NYYMagglio Ordonez is the next best choice but it should be a no-brainer. Without Arod the Yankees would be utterly pathetic. He had arguably the best April in baseball history and has driven in about 20% of the Yankees' runs.NL: Prince Fielder - MILI might be a Brewers fan and I might be a homer but I think Fielder makes a great case for NL MVP thus far. The Brewers are winning and he's carrying them and holding them up in first place. Matt Holliday is a guy a lot of other bloggers might go with but I think because of what the Brewers have done in comparison to the Rockies I gotta go with Prince. PS -can't wait to get me one of theseROOKIE OF THE YEAR AL: Daisuke Matsuzaka - BOS Doesn't seem fair that he is so much older and experienced than other rookies but he meets the definition of rookie by the rulebook and therefore he has definitely been the AL ROY thus fa...
Ryan Braun
2007-06-10 04:03:00
Rookie 3B Ryan Braun is batting third in a Milwaukees Brewers' line-up that is becoming a fantasy goldmine.  He is hitting .308 with four HRs in 52 ABs.  With 7 XBH, he has a superb .596 SLG, too. What I find odd is his 16 Ks and 3 BBs.  That isn't much better than the Rangers' Victor Diaz.  Yet there is not a hint of displeasure with Braun while Diaz garners a lot.  This isn't an attempt to equate Braun and Diaz just an observation on their similar walks and strikeout totals. Checking Braun's brief minor league totals offers two pictures.  In 2006, he struck out 100 times in 457 ABs and drew 43 BBs.  In 117 AAA ABs this season, he struck out just eleven times and drew 15 free passes.  Does the improvement in Ks and BBs signal that Braun will do the same in the majors?  If yes, does it mean he will do it in 2007? In comparison, Victor Diaz spent 2006 in AAA and struck out 99 times agaisnt 25 BBs in 379 ABs.  Before being recalle...
Ranking the Young Third Basemen: Part III
2007-05-26 23:50:00
Alright. Throughout the day I've analyzed some of the Top Young Third Basemen in the majors. Now, I'll rank these guys in the order I think you should pick them up if you are in need of a 3B/CI. First will be short-term rankings. Please keep in mind that rookies are the toughest players to predict because we are basing these predictions on easily compromised minor league numbers and speculation. A guy like Ryan Braun could hit for a good average if his 2007 AAA numbers carry over, but as this is somewhat unlikely, I'm not going to count on him hitting .300 for me.Alongside each player I've listed stats. These are not scientifically created. They came off the top of my head, and they are only there to compare the different skills of the different players. If your team needs steals, you'd be better off taking Iwamura or Gordon or Braun. If you need power and can afford a slightly lower BA, Reynolds might be your man. The numbers are for comparative purposes only, so please do not...
Pulling Out the Big Guns
2007-05-26 08:01:00
At 8 games over .500 and 5.5 games in the division lead my Brewers weren't pressing the panic button when they called up their top everyday prospect in Ryan Braun. They were proving that they are serious about winning now. I was a firm believer of leaving him in AAA Nashville until he was more polished but I've had a change of heart....here's why.I've always been a big fan of letting kids mature in the minors. I always thought that it is better for them to polish their skills than to ride the bench or struggle in the majors. I'm ready to make an exception. I thought the Brewers were fine with the horrendous Counsel/Graffanino platoon at 3B. Hell, they were constantly 10 games over .500 with what I believe was the worst 3B production in the NL. So why mess with it? After one game of Ryan Braun (not even a win!) I know why. Because they want to win and win now and I'm ready. This is the Brewers year in the NL Central and they know it. They're better than they have been in recent...
Brewers Fans Get Their Wish: Ryan Braun is Called Up
2007-05-25 17:40:00
The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that they will be calling stud third base prospect Ryan Braun up to the big leagues for Friday nights game. Braun has been Brewers fans’ favorite prospect for a while now, he’s top a lot of my lists here, and now you should go out and sign him immediately (although, it’s probably too late in most competitive leagues). I get a lot of these types of emails.  Steve writes: You would cut Scott Rolen for Braun? Braun better steal an awful lot of bases. What kind of advice is that? Do you ever go back to the advice you give and realize how off you are? That sounds like a challenge, so I bet Steve five bucks that Braun would have a better year.  We'll have to qualify that as "from here on out" and determine the exact criteria.  That is, if Steve is willing to back up his email with some lunch money. If I'm wrong on this one, you can definitely call me out on it.  Readers do this all the time and it's resulted in stronger predictions this year as compared to 2006.

Ryan Braun Starts Out With Bang, In Fact Several
2007-03-04 04:27:01
Watching Craig Counsell, 36, and Tony Graffanino, 34, take turns in the batting cage at the Brewers spring camp in Maryvale, Ariz., one comes away with a vague impression of two grownups stepping aside from time to time to let their kid brother Ryan Braun, 22, take a couple of swings. Not surprising, considering that Braun was only five years old when Graffanino turned professional, and just seven when Counsell came up. But the last few days have dispelled any notion as to just exactly whom of the three is really the big boy.Launching what the Milwaukee Journal called a "blast from the future," Braun, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound package of speed and power, drove in the final of his seven RBI Thursday with a spectacular grand slam, following his single, double, and three-run homer, making three homers for the spring campaign with another one Friday. He's batting .600.Okay, okay, it's early. Braun won't bat .600 the rest of the way. Maybe only .500. But with whispers circulating through c...
