Why don?t Ryanair make their free flights free?
2008-06-07 15:56:00 I noticed that Ryanair are offering “free” flights if you book by Monday 9th June 2008 and fly between 1 October 2008 and 31 January on flights that depart after 12 noon on Mondays, all day Tuesdays and until 12 noon on Wednesdays. Now that doesn’t leave a lot of room for flexibility as you ...
Flip-through: Brussels, Ferries, Notre Dame, and Ryanair madness
2008-06-06 18:28:00 Some of the stories that grabbed our attention this week: Brussels and Bruges Back from his trip to Belgrade for the Eurovision song contest, Alex of Spendthrift Shoestring jaunted off to Brussels on the Eurostar to see how the city has changed since his last visit in 2002. We enjoyed his musings on the city’s neighborhood and vibe, having just visited Brussels in March. And yes, Alex, we also have a fondness for the Use-It fold-out maps to Brussels (and five other Belgian cities). These map-guides are, according to their creators, ”no-non-sense, non commercial, made by locals,” and thus offer some candid (and amusing!) advice. When we visited Bruges, we “Used-It” nightly to find the city’s cool restaurants, bars, and cafes. You can print your own guide off from their website. European Ferries BudgetTravel.com reminded us yesterday to consider taking ferries between European cities. Ferries offer a fun and cheap transportation option around muc...

Ryanair, Ryanground
2008-05-31 17:40:00 from my arrival at the airport indications were that there was an half hour delay. 12.30 had become 13.00. We took the time to occupy the bar, naturally. Friends of Simon's on his wife's side (presumably) joined us, but soon became numerous enough to set up their own bar colony and we were left to consume alcohol as God, and the bar, intended. Unexpectedly at 12.20 or so the call went up to go to the gate. Apparently we were leaving only slightly later than planned after all. We downed our drinks sadly, but happily boarded the plane. Of course then the bladder began to complain, but I determined to hang in there until we took flight (well, I didn't really have an alternative). Then they dropped the clincher. Eh, we made a mistake, there will be an half hour delay after all. To be fair this was a scheduling thing (or a rumoured air traffic controller strike), but all my determination suddenly vanished and panic set in. I put on my puppy dog eyes and asked, could...

Ryanair diary: One Night in Barcelona’s Girona Airport
2008-04-08 19:25:00 In the spring of 2006, I was able to score some super-cheap tickets on Ryanair for a last-minute getaway to Barcelona from London, where I was living. It had been a great weekend, made possible by my low-cost flight. I booked a 6 PM flight in order to extend my holiday as long as possible, pushing off the reality of the next morning’s workday. As long as I was in Barcelona, I was on vacation! The tickets were basically free—I only had to pay the airport tax. The catch? I had to fly into and out of two less-than-central airports, London’s Stansted and Barcelona’s Girona airport. It was worth it, right? What follows is a diary of my flight experience en route from Barcelona to London. 4:30 PM: I arrive early at the airport for a 6 PM flight. We all know you have to get to the gate before the other passengers in order to snag the best seat. 5:00 PM: Shortly after check-in, an announcement is made. The flight has been delayed an hour. Ok, some extra time...

Friday flip-through: RyanAir reports, Lisbon, Florence
2008-04-04 16:33:00 Let’s wind down and settle into our weekend, shall we? Even on a rainy Friday morning, we’ve found inspiration this morning flipping through some other sites. For example: The web has been busier than the Dublin airspace with stories about Ryanair. Our favorite budget travel rebel at “Less than a Shoestring” last week continued to explain ”Why I Love/Hate RyanAir.” (Let’s say that it has to do with taxes, fees, and working the system. “Dealing with low-cost carriers such as RyanAir is like playing a game. In order to play well, you need to know the rules.” Meanwhile, over on the other shoe, Spendthrift Shoestring is back from Carriacou and already monitoring the overall health of the low-cost carrier business. Alex points out that Air Berlin and Centralwings have experienced some turbulence, while RyanAir is reporting growth in March. At least some airlines are showing growth. FREE Airplane Ticket from Ryanair
2008-02-11 03:50:00 Ryanair, an airliner in Ireland, lets some fly for free. And, if all goes well, they will be able to allow more people to fly for free. How is the business model for a free airline supposed to work? Since the revenue does not come from the ticket sale, the revenue comes from:1. Refreshments: No free peanuts here, any food or drink will cost you (sales: $61 million)2. $3.50 to check your bag ($36 million)3. Online links: Most flights are booked online, and by providing links to hotel and other partners, they earn money ($100 million)4. NASCAR style: They sell space on the sides of planes to advertisers to display ads"Michael O'Leary, Chief Executive of Ireland's Ryanair, Europe's most profitable airline, wants to make air travel free. Not free as in free from regulation, but free as in zero cost. By the end of the decade, he promises, "more than half of our passengers will fly free."The remarkable thing is, few analysts think his prediction is far-fetched: Ryanair already offers f...

2008-02-05 18:18:00 Reuters - After enraging the French president and his bride by using them in an advertisement, budget airline Ryanair is promoting its flights in the Italian press as a way of escaping piles of trash that are choking the city of Naples.
Ryanair profit declines 27% outlook Airline warns that fiscal 2008 prof
2008-02-04 20:18:00 LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Ryanair Holdings Plc declined 12% on Monday as Europe's largest low-cost airline reported a 27% drop in adjusted third-quarter profit because of lower ticket prices, and warned that higher fuel prices and weaker consumer spending could cut next year's profit by as much as 50%. Third-quarter net income at the budget carrier slipped to 47.2 million euros from 47.7 million euros a year earlier. Excluding a one-time gain of 12 million euros from the disposal of aircraft, adjusted profit fell 27% to 35 million euros. Passenger traffic rose 16% to 12.4 million. Sales climbed 16% to 569 million euros as a 30% increase in ancillary revenue offset a 4% drop in yields, also known as ticket prices. Ancillary revenue includes revenue from food sold on the plane, luggage charges and commissions on auto rentals and hotels booked through Ryanair's (RYA)(RYAAY) Web site. The airline said it's on track to meet its ancillary sales target of 20% of revenue over t...

Sarkozy may take action over Ryanair ad with Bruni
2008-01-29 09:00:00 PARIS (Reuters) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy may take legal action against Irish airline Ryanair over an advert featuring him with his girlfriend, former model and singer Carla Bruni daydreaming about a wedding. The advert, which ran in Le Parisien newspaper on Monday, features a photo of the smiling pair in an advertisement for cut-price tickets for "all occasions". "With Ryanair, all my family can come to my wedding," says a thought bubble coming from Bruni's head. Beneath the photo, the airline offers 100,000 tickets for February and March for which it says customers only pay taxes and charges. "It's an abusive use of the president's image, and so the president has given instruction to his counsel so that this case receives the necessary legal action," said Franck Louvrier, a spokesman in Sarkozy's office. Commenting on the advert, a Ryanair spokeswoman in Dublin said: "It was a humorous comment on a matter of great public inte...

Tues Trio: Ryanair in Charleroi, NYT Surprises, Aer Lingus Fare Sale
2007-12-11 17:26:00 We slept in a good hour beyond our typical wake-up time. So it’s a sleepy Tuesday. This is just background information. Ignore at will, but know that our morning coffee is especially appreciated today. The following things have caught our attention over the last few days: 1. Ryanair has announced five new routes in and out of Brussels Charleroi (to Bergerac, Limoges, Perpignan, Porto, and Zaragoza.) No Ryanair expansion these days comes without a cancellation, though there’s only one casuality here: the London Stansted-Charleroi route. Has Eurostar felled Ryanair on the London-Brussels route? It would appear so. 2. On Sunday, the New York Times published travel articles on Kazakhstan and Greenland. If Kazakhstan represents the eastern edge of Europe (with just a piece of its territory west of the Urals) and Greenland represents its western edge (technically a part of the Americas, but tied culturally and politically to Europe), then the NYT pleased us to no end on Sunday...

Wed Duo: UK to Sardinia Package; Nov Ryanair Stats
2007-12-05 18:09:00 Jet2holidays is currently marketing a £274 package (per person, based on four people sharing an apartment) departing from Leeds Bradford on May 31. The package includes a round-trip flight on Jet2 (from Leeds Bradford to Olbia), seven nights at the Residence Le Conchiglie in Budoni, transfers to and from the hotel, and taxes. The package gets more expensive later in the spring and summer—£274 for May 31 departure is the cheapest it gets. Meanwhile, and in a completely unrelated development, Ryanair released its November passenger stats today. Passenger numbers in November were up 23 percent over last November’s numbers, at 3.89 million over last November’s 3.16 million. Load factor lagged slightly, falling to 78 percent from 79 percent. Load factor designates the percentage of seats filled relative to the number of seats offered for sale.

Ryanair cabin crew girls strip off for charity calendar
2007-11-16 22:37:00 They have been trying to ditch their dubious reputation and work-hard play-hard image for decades. But a dubious new calendar featuring scantily-clad Ryanair girls posing in the skimpiest of bikinis will do nothing to improve public perception of the trolley dolly.Dubious: Miss January poses up in the cockpitThe girls, who look more like page three pinups than cabin crew, pout and pose in various locations around an airport and on-board their planes.First there's January pin-up Julia, showing off her ample assets in a barely-there white and black bikini coupled with a black hat.Bare essentials: Miss June couples her bikini with cowboy bootsThen there's Miss July Edita, reclining on a large wheel with a wrench in her hand and axel grease smeared over her bared torso. The complement is joined by a selection of other Ryanair staff, all similarly attired in flesh-flashing bikini tops and bottoms.Soap suds: Miss October shows off her cleaning uniformThe images are a long way from Ryanair...

SkyEurope vs. Ryanair: October Stats
2007-11-07 17:17:00 Behold, the return of our SkyEurope/Ryanair statistical face-off. In October 2007, Ryanair carried 21 percent more passengers than they did in October 2006, and managed a modest increase in load factor—the number of seats filled on planes flying throughout the month—of 2 percent (from 83 percent to 85 percent) also against October 2006 numbers. SkyEurope, by way of contrast, enjoyed an impressive 34.4 percent hike in passenger numbers in October 2007 against October 2006. Despite this, the airline’s load factor in October 2007 was .5 percent (75.3 percent to 74.8 percent) in comparison with October 2006 stats. Against this backdrop, Ryanair launches eight new routes from Shannon today, and seven from Bristol—with another five more inaugurations to follow by the end of the week. SkyEurope, still consolidating after its base contraction, has announced plans to sell two Boeing 737s. Thanks to AirScoop for alerting us to the sale.

2007-10-26 17:17:00 Autumn is here! 1. EastJet announced yesterday that is has acquired GB Airlines. A giddy glance at the GB route map turns up several destinations not currently served by easyJet, including Tangier and Fez in Morocco, Malta, Hurghada and Sharm el Sheik in Egypt, Tunis, Paphos, and Ajaccio and Bastia in Corsica. We’re hoping that easyJet won’t abandon these routes. 2. Jaunted reminds us that Madrid’s Festival de Otoño is in hyperactive mode through the middle of November. 3. Ryanair announced a modest route expansion today, with a new Shannon-Alicante route as well as new routes between Dublin and Palma, Santander, and Zadar. All routes will be inaugurated in March.

Friday List: Air Berlin, Amsterdam, Ryanair, Roasts
2007-09-21 23:14:00 We didn’t really think we’d make it through this week. Here’s our Friday list. 1. Thomas Cook, which currently owns most of Condor, will be selling the airline to Air Berlin in return for an almost 30 percent stake in the expanded airline, plus €120 million.
