S Korea to send 'kimchi' to space
2008-02-14 10:07:00 BBC says, "Many South Koreans believe kimchi has beneficial health properties South Korea's national dish, kimchi, has been cleared for launch on the country's first space expedition. A specially-developed recipe of the much-loved pickled cabbage dish is among several Korean food products approved for the April 2008 mission. The recipe omits a bacterium previously thought to be vital for fermentation but which would be dangerous in space.A special container has also been to designed to withstand pressure and prevent any spicy spillages in space. Kimchi is made by fermenting cabbage with red peppers, radishes and a lot of garlic and ginger. But the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) said that the lactic acid bacteria which usually help the fermentation process "could threaten astronauts' health in space". So they devised a variation on the dish which does not contain any bacteria. "Kimchi must be provided in a germ-free state," it said. The dish will feature on the me...

The plans, expected to cost 4 trillion won (US$4 billion), are part of President-elect Lee Myung-bak’s drive to revamp public English education and reduce spending on private learning. The goal is for everyone to be able to speak English freely with a high-school education, Lee said. The new government plans to spend 1.7 trillion won on hiring 23,000 teachers with TEE (Teaching English in English) certificates between 2009 and 2013. S.Korea court finds Lone Star S.Korean head guilty
2008-02-02 13:32:00 SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean court on Friday found the head of U.S. private equity house Lone Star's South Korean operations guilty of manipulating the stock price of a former credit card unit of KEB so as to absorb it cheaply. It was the first court verdict in a long-running legal battle between South Korean prosecutors and Lone Star's South Korean operations, which bought Korea Exchange Bank (KEB), the country's No. 6 bank, for $1.2 billion in 2003. Lone Star's Paul Yoo has been standing trial since prosecutors charged him in late 2006 of driving down the stock price of KEB's former credit card unit by spreading rumours to allow KEB to absorb the unit at below-market prices.

S.Korea's Roh appeals to save North-South ministry
2008-01-29 08:38:00 SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's outgoing president went on national TV on Monday to make a last ditch appeal to block plans by his successor to axe several ministries including the one responsible for dealing with the troublesome North. The Unification Ministry has been central to Roh Moo-hyun's policy of forging closer ties with his reclusive neighbour, a policy that President-elect Lee Myung-bak has criticised as too soft. Lee wants the ministry absorbed into the Foreign Ministry. "Merging these ministries will mean impairing the philosophy and values of this government. That's why I've talked about a reconsideration," Roh told a televised news conference. Conservative President-elect Lee wants to shut, merge or reduce six ministries once he takes office on Feb. 25. Roh urged the liberal-dominated parliament to block Lee's plans and said he could veto any legislation to streamline government that lands on his desk before he leaves office. Lee, an ex-CEO, sai...

McCain's Korea Scenario for Iraq
2007-12-20 17:21:00 Andrew Sullivan, following his endorsement of Ron Paul, has posted a few letters from dissenting readers. One of them makes the case for McCain, citing the Iraq war issue:"His [McCain's] goal is to leave Iraq with a functioning government and the ability to defend itself after the departure of American troops."'Winning' has been redefined in terms of how best to get out. The reader above cautions against a hasty withdrawal, insisting that we mustn't turn our back on Iraq until the government we have installed is working and proves viable. In my view this a fool's errand. In Iraq the Arab-Islamic identity and sectarian divides are so deeply embedded that the idea that a secular, Western-style democracy installed by an outside power widely viewed with suspicion will be able to function on its own anytime soon is very nearly laughable. As with the Karzai government in Afghanistan, the only way it can continue will be with a sustained U.S. military presence - in other words as a pr...
