New emissions rules may force next gen Saab 9-3 to grow smaller
2008-05-09 21:34:00 Upcoming fuel economy regulations in the U.S. and carbon dioxide emissions limits in Europe appear set to take a bite out of the next generation Saab 9-3. The current 9-3 is derived from GM's Epsilon platform and the new 9-3 was due to come off the Epsilon II that underpins the new Opel Insignia, but a change may be in the works. GM has reportedly canceled the Epsilon II-based 9-3 in favor of a model built off the Global Compact Car platform that will be the basis of the next Astra/Cobalt and, of course, the Volt. If the new plan, proceeds that would give Saab two cars off the new chassis with the smaller 9-1 being the other. New structural construction technology in the new architecture will apparently help maximize interior space in the smaller car.[Source: Autocar]

2008-05-09 01:09:00 Report: GM/Saab used human cadavers for crash tests General Motors' Saab division purportedly used human bodies donated to science in crash tests, according to a Swedish newspaper. "For certain things, it?s important to use cadavers," Claes Tingvall of the Swedish Road Administration told Expressen. Mr. Tingvall said the tests involved "people who had donated their own bodies." He said using real bodies helps develop better crash dummies and, not surprisingly, provides the best possible idea of what would happen to a living human in a crash. GM used a total of ten cadavers for the project, according to Tingvall. Saab would not confirm or deny the reports. "We conduct our own research and try to find other methods to achieve our results, with the help of computers, for example,? said Saab spokesperson Christer Nilsson. "We are with GM through thick and thin," Nilsson told the newspaper.

There are of course several hybrids on the market already, but none of them are plug-ins. A normal hybrid captures energy which would normally be lost during braking and stores it in the battery for the electric motor. Plug-ins draw electricity from the mains, and while this might at first seem to be a backwards step it's claimed that CO2 emissions will be lower for a plug-in car than for a conventional hybrid - all the more so if the mains electricity comes from a hydro electric station or a wind farm.Volvo says it intends to introduce normal hybrid cars"in the medium term".Meanwhile, the joint venture consortium will start off with a fleet of ten plug-ins along the lines of the Volvo C30 ReCharge concept which made its first public appearance last autumn.
