When Burqa gets Saffron Band: BJP and Muslims
2008-04-09 20:47:00 The photo shows a veiled woman who has also got the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha's band tied around her head.Just around 10 years ago it was extremely tough to find Muslims in BJP. Those who joined the BJP were looked down upon in the Muslim society.A few years after demolition of Babri Masjid, particulary after 1995-96 Muslims slowly started getting into the party. Atal Behari Vajpayee, who had been forgotten, came back to the centre-stage so that the party could get more acceptability. Many Muslim politicians joined it either due to lack of opportunity to rise in Congress or because they felt BJP is a much better option than Congress which had only exploited Muslims for half-a-century.And when the party failed to prove its majority in parliament after a 13 day government, it again projected Vajpayee as a Mukhauta. More Muslims joined the party. Once aggressively anti-minorityism, the party also formed Alpasankhyak Morchas (minority wings) in all states. And after the ...

Growing Your Own Saffron
2008-01-30 23:15:00 Saffron is an expensive spice that has a very distinct flavor and aroma. It is prized throughout the world, but often only used for special-occasion dishes because it is so expensive. Where Does Saffron Come From, Anyway? Saffron comes from the three stigmas of an autum blooming crocus plant, the Crocus Sativus. The Crocus Sativus is hardy from zones six through nine in the United States, and

Saffron Sauce and Pinot Noir, anyone?
2007-11-02 02:01:00 The movie No Reservations made my taste buds sweat. Starring sultry actress, Catherine-Zeta Jones, her character makes gourmet food more enticing. I can't help but compare the movie to Ratatouille where the plot also revolved around the kitchen, secret recipes, and magical ingredients. In No Reservations, Saffron Sauce was a star and the Pinot Noir from Adelaide, Australia was also mentioned. Saffron Sauce reminds me of the saffron here in the Philippines which is rather cheap and easy to find. It can be easily bought in markets and is known locally as "Kasubha". Buy lugaw or rice porridge in Manila and the vendors will generously sprinkle saffron on your dish.Aaron Eckhart, who was excessively charming in the movie with his immaculately white apron, made me wish I had my own sous chef. Story wise, it's simple and realistic except for the shrink part. I suggest watching it with someone who has the gusto for fine dining and creativity in the kitchen. Passionate people will easily r...

Saffron Rice
2007-10-21 19:55:00 I have always admired a bowl of plain rice served with curries in Indian restaurants nearby. And it was mainly because it wasn't just a bowl of plain rice (like the one I used to always make in our house). Tossed with beautifully orange colored grains with whole spices thrown in here and there, it makes a wonderful festive accompaniment. Each time I eat out I am swearing to myself - This rice looks so pretty, I am totally making it tomorrow... The famous "tomorrow" never happened, though. Until.... Sunita of Sunita´s World decided for saffron being this month´s Think Spice cooking event. I have tried to participate twice, but failed to do that, so I just HAD to. This was the perfect opportunity for my lazy bum to lead its way to the kitchen. Thanx a lot for the kick, Su ;-)At first I thought that there were two bowls of rice, one plain and one (smaller one) cooked with saffron mixed together. Later on, when I researched several genuine recipes, I learned the trick. Let me show you...
Chickpea, Leek, and Saffron Soup
2007-10-20 04:24:00 Here’s another one that was conjured up more by necessity than creativity. I’m leaving for a 10-day vacation next Thursday (more on that later), so I need to use up all my perishables by then. Today was a gray rainy day, so soup was definitely the way to go for dinner. Chickpea, Leek, and Saffron Soup(makes about 5 cups – I won’t tell you how many servings that should be) 2 tablespoons olive oil3 medium garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 medium Yukon gold potato, cut into ¼” dice 1 large leek (about ¾ pounds), white and light green parts thinly sliced (about 2 cups)¼ teaspoon saffron threads 2 cups vegetable broth1 15 ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed ½ teaspoon salt (to taste) 1 cup milkFreshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons chopped parsley1 ounce parmigiano-reggiano cheese6-10 strands saffron *************** Heat the oil over medium heat. Stuffed Ravioli in Saffron and Cream Sauce
2007-10-11 19:25:00 My favourite cuisine after Indian is definitely Italian. I love the use of cheese, herbs and spices that their dishes contain. And raviolis are my personal favourites on any italian menu. As a cook, I always try to combine flavors that I think go well with each other, irrespective of their origin, and that's how most of the fusion dishes are created. So when my husband asked me to make Ravioli for dinner, I tried to combine the traditional Italian ingredients with a touch of Indianism to the sauce, creating this Ravioli stuffed with Pesto sauce and ricotta cheese topped with a sauce made from saffron, cream and tomatoes!Ingredients1 packet of ravioli sheets1/2 cup ricotta cheese1/4th cup Pesto sauce (or see recipe below)1/2 cup blanched spinach - chopped (you cna use mushrooms or any other veggies for stuffing)1/2 cup tomatoes - cut2 tbsp butter1 tbsp egg wash or cornflour mixed with water - to seal the raviolis2 tsp saffron4 tbsp parmesan cheese1 cup whipping cream1/4 cup plain wh...

THINK SPICE, THINK 'SAFFRON'...PHIRINI/RICE PUDDING
2007-10-11 03:39:00 "Life is unsure; always eat your dessert first."AnonymousPHIRINI/RICE PUDDINGLooks like it's time again for 'beyond baking', and this time I'm hitting the saffron trail! This recipe has finally been typed and blogged thanks to Sunita's World, who runs a really interesting spice event every month. I think it's a pretty neat idea, and also a great learning experience. I missed the last few spices due to the 'tension' of trying to blog. I feel a little more confident now, and a bit more organised of course! Got a loooooooooooooong way to go, but am getting there.Strands of Saffron...with the flowers of the Indian 'Haar-Singaar' treeThis months' spice is 'SAFFRON'...the world's most expensive spice by weight. I've just used a few strands, and they seem to work the magic. The recipe is for a creamy, delicious pudding/phirini made out of ground rice. A great vegetarian dessert option which can be set it in individual bowls too!! This is a recipe I have made over and over ag...

VPOD: Saffron Stunner
2007-09-27 15:30:00 Saffron is a sacred and auspicious color with many regarding it as the most holy color of all. It is often worn by Buddhist monks and is an important color in Hinduism as well. But, regardless of religious leanings, I think we can all agree it looks just stunning on today's VPOD.This 1950s chiffon party dress is an unlabeled treasure. I just love its pleated bodice with the off-center corset-like lacing and the way the hem dips from shorter in the front to longer in the back. It's a gorgeous find for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Textile.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mailing list. Saffron colored sweet potatoe stew with a touch of caraway
2007-06-10 19:24:00 A couple of months ago I made a vegetarian dish that I hadn't tried before. A bit exotic because it contained sweet potatoes, bits of dried apricot and spices like saffron, chili and caraway/cumin. Basically it was a stew made from the ingredients above plus chopped onions and various beans. My wife thought that the dish was rather odd and she posted in her blog. Some of her readers tried it out and they thought that it was rather tasty.

A Taste of Yellow: Cornish Saffron Cake and Happiness Soup
2007-05-19 03:26:00 Thanks to Barbara of Winos and Foodies, a good portion the foodblogging world is painted yellow for a very special event: A Taste of Yellow. This event is one of many that supports Livestrong Day (16 May) , an awareness event for cancer issues and cancer survivors. Thanks to the Canadian Cancer Society, information about cancer in Canada is available with just a few keystrokes: here's their 2007 statistics report (116p PDF), information from a comprehensive cancer study in young adults (aged 20-44) (120p PDF), and, of course, general stats at a glance. Yellow is a significant colour for me.Yellow was the colour of the house when I was little. It was home...it was warm...it was comfort. It is also my mum's lucky colour (she literally painted every room a lemony-gold colour...very 1970s), so it is also, by familial extension, my lucky colour.Yellow is also the colour of the Canadian Cancer Society's signature daffodil. My personal interest is cancer in young adults, and it's for pur...

Saffron Rice
2007-03-08 20:55:01 Saffron is the most expensive spice. The Sanskrit name for saffron points to the ancient Indian area of saffron production: Kashmirajanman or "product of Kashmir". Saffron in some modern Indian languages is called kesar (Hindi) and Kisar (Urdu). The Saffron filaments or threads are actually the dried stigmas of the saffron flower, "Crocus Sativus Linneaus". Each flower contains only three stigmas. These threads must be picked from each flower by hand and more than 75,000 of these flowers are needed to produce just one pound of Saffron filaments making it the world's most precious spice. But, because of saffron's strong coloring power and intense flavor it can be used sparingly. Saffron is used both for its bright orange-yellow color and for its strong, intense flavor and aroma. Exquisite Saffron RiceI remember my Amma used to keep this saffron in her trasure chest. As a kid it was a big puzzle for me as how few threads of Saffron would give such a intense colour and flavour and I...

Sweet Semolina with a Touch of Saffron (Food Fit for the Go
2006-12-02 15:06:25 Sweet Semolina with a Touch of Saffron, originally uploaded by Anupama 72.Its amazing how sometimes the most obvious choice of food is right in front of you and you are racking your brains to come up with a good idea. This happened to me when I read about the Festive Food Fair hosted by the lovely Anna of Morsels and Musings. When I first read the word Festive it conjured up in my mind all the food that we Indians make at Diwali, but then I thought " Oh! but everyone has already blogged about it very recently. So it won't be anything new" In the last few days while cooking at home my thoughts often strayed to what I would make for the Festive Food Fair but kept drawing a blank. Another small problem was that there is no upcoming special occasion or festival that my family and I celebrate atleast till coming January. But the solution came to me through a very cute request made by my 4 yr old son. He has a major sweet-tooth and makes such requests now and then which I sometimes fulfi...

Coconut Ladoos with a touch of Saffron Part 2
2006-08-08 17:05:00 All my dear Bloggo-o-buddies, right now I am confusion personified. The recipe of the coconut ladoos I posted along with the picture and the other info has just disappeared into thin air. And for some wierd reason Blogger refuses to edit my post. So I had to create an entirely new post for the recipe.I made these ladoos for Narali Poornima .It is the festival celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Shravan when all the fisherfolk worship the ocean with offerings of coconuts. Its that time when the south west monsoon is supposed to abate and the fishermen can cast their nets in the seas again and trade resumes again. For foodies like me it means preapring some sweetdish with coconut as one of the chief ingredients. Here's how I made themIngredients:3 katoris coarse semolina1 coconut grated (or 2.5 katoris dessicated coconut flakes)1/2 katori milk1/2 katori ghee (clarified butter)For the Sugar syrup:1.5 katori water2.5 katoris sugar1 tspn saffron1 tspn cardamom powder1 tblspn ...

Patience, still only 30 minutes, and quality ingredients are the keys to this marvelous food.
