Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the EconomyThis is a 3:31 web-only video that accompanies the NBC Nightly News segment on the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument. There is also a written story."We can reach the moon, but we can't reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench. What kind of life is down there? What kind of scientific discoveries are yet to be found?" says Angelo Villagomez, of the Friends of the Monument, which led a vigorous campaign for a protected area. The Trieste, a 2-man min-sub operated by the US Navy, did reach the bottom in 1960. Since then, the only vessel to come close, was an unmanned Japanese research sub in 1995. Next month, though, they'll be another US attempt, this one unmanned, in a mini-sub called the Nereus from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.Scientists are heralding a new era in marine exploration. For his part, Villagomez sees the establishment of Mariana trench National Monument as the ocean equivalent of the se...

Dong Bang Shin Ki in Saipan
2009-01-24 23:38:00
There is a boy band staying at Pacific Islands Club this week:TVXQ (often stylized TVXQ! or TVfXQ), an acronym for Tong Vfang Xien Qi (東方神起), is a quintet South Korean boy band formed under SM Entertainment in 2003. In South Korea they are known as Dong Bang Shin Ki or Dong Bang Shin Gi (동방신기). They were later introduced in Japan as Tōhōshinki (東方神起?) under Avex sub label, Rhythm Zone in 2005. Their name roughly translates as "Rising Gods of the East". TVXQ, the acronym based on the Chinese counterpart of their name, is the abbreviation officially used on all products and advertisements outside of Japan.Since their debut, TVXQ has become one of the most popular singing groups in East Asia, gaining great popularity in such countries as China, Singapore, Thailand, and other East Asian regions. After all the trouble we went through to get the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument in over 1000 newspapers and other news outlets, who knew that all we had to do...

Best Halloween Costume on Saipan
2008-10-26 02:14:00
Last night Sarah Palin winked at me. It was awesome. Too bad I already voted for Obama. So why was Sarah Palin drinking campaigning at Godfather's last night? No she's not here to hunt whale sharks from a helicopter, last night was the Red Cross' Club 200!And I didn't go!Yeah, lame, I know. Club 200 is the biggest event of the year. All the cool good-looking people go there. I went in 2006, but last year I was in Laos.  Now I'm a two year no show.  Oh well, there's always next year.Anyway, Club 200 was a Halloween party this year. I missed out on the fun. Stupid work budget.I've got a pretty awesome costume lined up for next weekend. I don't want to give too much away, but it involves a purple shirt, green pants, and a new haircut. Now if I can just find some red suspenders...
Welcome to Saipan
2008-10-19 13:59:00
Scores of supporters of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument descended upon the Hyatt Regency to welcome James Connaughton, Lyle Laverty and Sean Morton to Saipan. Led by Ike Cabrera, Cinta Kaipat, Ed Salas, Dave Sablan, Chailang Palacios, Agnes McPhetres, and many others, over 65 supporters stood on the curb to welcome the federal officials to our island home.As the Department of Public Safety neared the group of orange clad supporters, it slowed to a stop and James Connaughton stepped out and shook hands with every single person out there to greet him. When I shook his hand he said, "Hello, I'm Jim Connaughton and I work with President Bush."I simply replied, "Welcome to Saipan."It took a lot of hard work from a lot of hard working individuals to get to where we are today. Thank you, everybody....and don't forget to wear orange all week!...especially today!
The Fords Visit Saipan - Day 1
2008-05-31 08:52:00
The first day was a full day. We started off with breakfast at Shirley's, then we went to American Memorial National Park to visit the museum and the World War II memorials. Kevin wanted to see the history museum next, so we drove over there only to find that they were closed down due of a power outage. Customers Use Candles, indeed. Before we got back in the car I dared Kevin and Catie to walk through the bomb shelter out front. Kevin's going to kill me for writing this, but Catie did it before Kevin!Ouch!By that time it was starting to get hot, so we decided to go swimming. The waterpark at Pacific Islands Club was a hit with the kids. I'm not sure how many times they went around the lazy river, but they must have covered several kilometers. We also went kayaking and ate a huge bowl of spicy fries. I even managed to catch a little nap.Jim took a long nap. While he napped we paid a visit to the Kaipat house in Koblerville and to my Dad's house in Fina Sisu. The house in Fina...

The Saipan Blog endorses Scott Randolph
2007-12-31 03:04:00
My good friend and former roommate, Florida Representative Scott Randolph (D-Orlando), is running for re-election in 2008.In 2005, I stood beside Scott and Scott's wife, Susannah, as we made his first campaign T-shirts in their living room. I also set up their first paypal account, which helped them receive their very first online contributions.I moved to Japan shortly after that, which of course led to my return to Saipan. Read the archives of this blog if you want to know the rest.I missed out on helping Scott win his first primary election and his first general election in 2006. I'm 6,000 miles away, so the most I could do was put a campaign button on my website and send in a campaign contribution.Scott is an environmentalist's dream come true. He is currently the Democratic Ranking Member on the Florida Committee on Environmental Protection and has spent his entire career working to protect Florida's fragile environment. If you want to join me in helping to elect a Real En...

We Love Saipan
2007-12-04 13:58:00
One year ago, two bloggers put their heads together and came up with what would eventually become the cornerstone of the blogging community in the Marianas. That blogging cornerstone is called the We Love Saipan Network.Take a look at one year's worth of blogger statistics, taken from We Love Saipan's eXTReMe Tracking web counter:The top right corner shows that we have been tracking the website's stats for exactly 365 days. In that time, exactly 14,388 Unique Visitors were recorded. That is 14,388 different unique visitors being introduced to real life in paradise, straight from the bloggers' fingertips.Another telling statistic of our success is our percentage of overseas readers. While about one quarter of our readers came from the Marianas, just over half came from the United States and about one quarter hailed from the rest of the globe. Those are impressive statistics. One would expect that a website about Saipan would have mostly Saipan readers. This proves that we ar...
Goodbye, Saipan
2007-09-30 23:00:00
Let the adventure begin!I am about to spend the next 38 days traveling to places that I have never heard of and that I can barely pronounce. That's 5 1/2 weeks. What have I gotten myself into?I'll try to do a few updates while I'm on the road, but most of my writing will be going into a travel journal. I picked up a cool little notebook at the bookstore yesterday just for that purpose. If I come across a computer, I'll try to get something up. EJ told me last night that reading my blog while I'm away will be like taking her on the trip with me. I don't want to disappoint her, so even though I'm not making any promises, I will make an effort to post.
Hafa Adai, Welcome to the Saipan Blog!
2007-09-30 22:49:00
I feel like starting over. No, I don't mean that I want to delete this blog and begin again. I mean that I want to change the direction of this blog.A few months ago, all of the Saipan blogs turned into what I can only describe as a virtual Junior High School lunch room. Somebody would mention me in a post and then suddenly an anonymous commenter would pop up and start calling me spineless, two-faced, and an assortment of other names. Then they went after Boni. Then Jeff. And Cinta. Even EJ wasn't immune. There was also Harry vs Bree and Jane vs Brad, Jane vs Jeff, and then Jane vs Nahal, who isn't even a blogger. With the exception of a few certain individuals (like Jane), most of these commenters would say that they post anonymously because they want people to focus on the arguments, not the person making the arguments. To paraphrase about two months' worth of comments, "Angelo Villagomez is an idiot, but please don't ask me who I am because you would only attack me and not my o...
The Saipan Blogger Endorses Blog Rush
2007-09-24 13:33:00
Harry Blalock sent me an invitation to join Blog Rush. It is another one of those programs designed to drive traffic to your website.Harry previously sent me an invitation to Link Referral, which I now think sucks. I tried it out and it hardly sent any traffic my way. The only way to get good traffic from it is to spend about an hour a day playing with it. I'm not down with that. I junked it.Blog Rush seems to work better. You can put it on your blog and forget about it. The traffic comes automatically. The way it works is you put a widget on your website that displays the links of five other websites. Every time you display the widget (i.e. every time your page loads), you earn 1 credit that is good for 1 link to your website. The link will appear in the widget on someone else's website.Users pick a category for their websites. Websites in the same category will show links to other websites in the same category. The idea is that people looking at websites in one category will b...
Native Peoples Adrift in the Modern World
2007-09-23 11:00:00
The previous post on the disgusting degeneration of the Polynesians in New Zealand into US Black-style gangbangers seems to be the case with many "indigenous peoples" in the world today. They just do not seem to be cut out for modern, Western, high tech society. We came into their lands and took them over or colonized them, and took away their old way of life, which, limited as it may have been, was at least working for them. A description of the Micronesians of Saipan from the interesting Saipan Sucks website (my notes) is instructive: There is a very high rate of sexual molestation on Saipan, along with a very high rates of women having several kids, all by different men, and men fathering children by different women and never bothering to support any of them. The locals basically refuse to work in any sort of productive occupations and family-based corruption is endemic. School performance is abysmal.Spousal abuse is common. There is more incest and cousin marriage on Saipan tha...
House for Sale or Rent on Saipan
2007-09-20 01:21:00
My COED Soccer teammate and early morning running buddy, David Khorram, is trying to sell his old house. His family recently moved to be closer to their children's school.I guess the 15 minute commute was killing them.:)David has his house listed on the Saipan Real Estate Blog. The house is beautiful. It would be perfect for a lawyer, doctor, or other executive....or imagine six or seven young people renting out the house. It would be just like the Real World on MTV!I haven't written anything on this blog about buying a house or renting an apartment. I should. Although there are people who deal in real estate on this island, most of the land transactions and rentals are done on a one on one basis.Maybe I'll write about it when I get back from Thailand. In the meantime, if you are interested in David's house, please go ahead and contact him directly. He can send you more pictures or take you for a personal tour. Here is some more info on the house, pulled directly off of the Saipan...

Saipan loses NCLEX takers from RP
2007-08-26 03:13:00
More bad news for the CNMI's tourism industry.Starting this week, Filipino nurses seeking jobs in the United States began taking the National Council Licensure Examination in their own country.Instead of the past practice of coming to Saipan or going to Hong Kong and other Asian countries for the NCLEX, Filipino nurses now have the option of taking the licensure exam at the Pearson Professional Center in Makati City.It is estimated that some 4,000 Filipino nurses will take the NCLEX until December this year."The nursing shortage is still significant and research still indicates that there is a future anticipated shortfall of more than a million nurses in the U.S.," said Casey Marks, associate executive director for business operations of Pearsonvue, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The shortage is worldwide, according to Marks. In the U.S.-a preferred destination of many Filipino nurses-?there is certainly a significant demand for a long period of time," he said."That?s one of th...
The Saipan Blog: Still the Most Popular Blog Ever
2007-08-10 23:46:00
Click on the image to enlargeI have been the Most Popular Blog Ever for five days now. I know you're jealous. That's just how I roll.******I was on the radio again this week.Mike Tripp and I appeared on Harry Blalock's Island Issues radio program. We were invited to talk about creating community driven Ecotourism opportunities in the Marianas. The specific programs we are particularly interested in are improving the Marianas image and functionality as a diving destination, working with Beautify CNMI to create and market a system of parks & trails in the Marianas, and creating a coop of locally owned bed & breakfasts and home stays, whether for learning English, immersing the tourist in the local culture and way of life, or for giving the tourist a more affordable means of visiting the Marianas. We had a meeting of this yet unnamed group on Wednesday during happy hour at Oleai Bar & Grille. About 50 people showed up. It was a little chaotic at first, but after only 90 minutes w...
A New Discovery
2007-08-05 01:15:00
I had no idea there was more than one latte stone (sounds like an Irish guy saying laddy, not the coffee drink) site at Obyan Beach. It is right next to the small path that divers use to get to the entry point on the East part of the beach. I must have walked by it a hundred times.Even if I had decided to walk through that part of the jungle, I probably (OK definately) wouldn't have recongized these big rocks as latte stones.A group of Northern Marianas College students taking a Northern Marianas History class came up with the idea to restore the East Obyan Latte Site. They coordinated with Beautify CNMI and the Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to make it happen. HPO got the proper permits from the Division of Fish & Wildlife and led the restoration. The students filmed the day's activities and are planning to put together a small documentary of the site and the restoration. They asked all of us a few questions. We were all asked, "what are latte stones, how were they used, and w...

Harry Blalock: Under Investigation
2007-08-02 22:23:00
Recent information has surfaced that may cast doubt on the validity of Harry Blalock's run for Saipan's Best Blog. This blog has already unearthed hard proof that Harry Blalock runs an Identity Theft Ring in the CNMI where he preys on old ladies, retards, and midget pirates. That investigation only scratched the surface of Harry Blalock's evil, hair deprived scalp. Not content with stealing their life savings, their credit cards, and their ship, Blalock went on to steal their dignity. He is now under investigation by Wendy Doromal and Allen Staymen for possible abuses of midget pirate labor.Have you ever bought fish on the side of the road? Did you know that you are supporting Harry Blalock's midget pirate fishing monopoly? After illegally obtaining their pirate ships, Harry Blalock uses midget pirate labor to extract tuna from the seas around the CNMI, killing as many dolphins and turtles as he can along the way. He uses hermit crab hearts as bait. The midget pirate fishermen complai...

Next Governor Poll by the Writers
2007-07-29 03:53:00
This Vizu poll thing is started to take over our blogs. While it is fun, it is getting to be a bit much (this coming from the guy who posted three attack blogs yesterday).Middle Road added another poll yesterday, this time asking the question, "Who should and could be the next Governor of the CNMI?" The choices are as follows:Opinion Polls & Market ResearchBreathe easy, Career Politicians of the CNMI; I can't run until I'm 35.Just a few thoughts:I guess they left off Ben Fitial because he is already governor, therefore he can't be the next governor. What about Tim Villagomez? Why no love for my primo? I've also heard rumors that Pedro P. Tenorio and Joe Ayuyu are likely candidates. Comments on the Middle Road blog also mention Tina Sablan, the package guy at the Post Office, Jimmy Buffet, and Holani Smith as potential candidates.Whatev.I think every person with political ambitions on this island wants to be Governor. Why is Brad winning the Saipan's Sexiest Male Blogger poll? Oh, I know. He's sending out mass emails and posting bulletins on Myspace, that's why.Jeff Turbitt has decided to hit back. His campaign has gone negative. It is not too late to vote or to change your vote. A Battle is Raging

Only one shall be named Saipan's Sexiest Male Blogger...and it doesn't look like it will be me. In fact, it doesn't look like I'll even make the top three. That honor currently goes to:#3 - Dr. David KhorramAlright, this one I can understand. Chicks dig doctors. Enough said.#2 - Brad RuszalaAre all of our voters short Asian girls? Is that why Captain Guns is getting so many votes?Sure he has a face that only a mother could love, but he is on the National Football Team, cracks a funny joke once in a while, and can drink more strawberry daquiris that a freshman Delta Delta Delta.I would never suggest that a voter not vote for a candidate (no mudslinging in this contest!), but I'm not looking forward to listening to Brad talk about being Saipan's Sexiest Man Blogger for the rest of, well, eternity.#1 - Harry Blalock Alright, I don't own a radio, so I don't listen to Harry's show. Is he campaigning on his radio show? Is he telling listeners that he'll only play their requests ...
Bald and Talkative is the New Sexy

Harry Blalock thinks he is new to blogging, but he's actually been doing it for several years. Although Harry has only been blogging at Saipan Diver for just over a month, he has been publishing his weekly Food for Thought column online since ever since. He didn't even know that what he was writing was a blog!In addition to blogging, Harry has a morning radio talk show called Island Issues. I imagine that he'll eventually get into podcasting because, man, does this guy like to talk (Just ask EJ, who says Harry is like a talkative lady).Harry is a member of the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Hair Club for Men. In his spare time he enjoys SCUBA, shell collecting, and sticking it to politicians.Harry was shocked to find out that he had been nominated for Saipan's Sexiest Male Blogger.I'm shocked that he's winning.

Saipan's Sexiest Male Blogger
2007-06-20 01:50:00
Saipan is full of sexy male bloggers; now is the time to decide who is the sexiest. The nomination period is now open. Just leave a comment with your nomination. -You can nominate as many bloggers as you want, they just have to be somehow connected to Saipan.-You can nominate yourself (that's mostly for Brad who probably wouldn't get nominated otherwise).-Prizes and sponsors will be announced once all the nominations are received.-Once all of the nominations are in, I will create the poll and will send the html code for the poll to put the poll on each of the nominees blogs. That way there will be no bias.-This is my poll, so I reserve the right to change the rules at any time.
