Saleen's S5S Raptor was one of a few show stoppers at the 2008 New York Auto Show, and now it looks like the car has a serious shot at making the transition from concept to road car. If the car does get the green light, it could even show up in Saleen dealerships as early as 2011. Chris Theodore, vice chairman and chief technical officer of Saleen, told Automobile that the S5S Raptor does have a legitimate shot at making production. "Yes, the car has the potential for reality. We are well aware that the sweet spot in supercars is between about $150K and $200K." While that endorsement falls short of guaranteeing the S5S Raptor's production, it does indicate that Saleen execs are heavily considering production. Designed to compete with the high-performance offerings from Ferrari and Lamborghini, the Raptor delivers 650 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 630 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The Raptor is designed to digest cellulosic ethanol fuel, which should help it score points with environmentalists and advocates of oil independence. ô°The higher octane rating of E85 gas also results in more power, Saleen says. The supercharged S5S is reportedly capable of hitting 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. The Raptor can be equipped with a close-ratio 6-speed manual, or optional paddle shifting sequential gearbox. Either gearbox can send the rigid aluminum chassis screaming to a top speed of over 200 mph. Autoblog reports Saleen's S5S Raptor, which debuts at the New York Auto Show this week, will run on ethanol and have a lightweight aluminum body. We only have an air brushed picture (above) to show you for now but will post pictures and more info on this 200 MPH beauty when we get to New York. The Raptor is a good example that petrolheads like Saleen (see video below the fold) can be green too.Ethanol and aluminum technologies are green and, importantly, accepted by the super car community. Ethanol has lower energy and gets lower mileage than gasoline but a car can be tweaked to take advantage of the higher octane in ethanol to get more horse power. Use of lightweight aluminum saves fuel and it allows for higher speeds which is why sport car companies like Lotus, Ferrari and Tesla are using aluminum today.We are still looking for a good, green reason why a car would need to go 200 MPH, though.[Source: Autoblog]

This is an interesting Fox-body Mustang and is worth a look, at least for historical puposes. Asking price: $41,000. Currently running with a 5.8 V-8 and T-56 (replacing the original 302, which used variously a Toploader 4-speed and a Doug Nash 5-speed). The car also uses SVO disc brakes (aka a mashup of Crown Vic cop car and Lincoln parts that had also been used on the Mustang SVO, Lincoln LSC, and Saleen Mustangs).
