Sammy Sosa To Retire After WBC?
2008-05-28 14:11:00
ESPN's Enrique Rojas, quoting the Dominican paper Hoy, writes that Sammy Sosa intends to retire after playing in the next World Baseball Classic (to be held in March '09). Sosa's quotes are confusing: "There's something that I wish to state very clearly: I'm not looking for a job. In fact, I have told my agent that he should stop offering my services to MLB teams.  I'm not retired. I remain highly focused and not begging for a contract." I think Sosa's point is that he is still willing to play for an MLB team, but only if they come to him.
Sammy Sosa Considering Retirement
2008-04-10 12:10:00
According to Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune, Sammy Sosa is considering retirement if he doesn't get an offer soon.  Sosa passed the 600 HR plateau last year, so there's no statistical reason to hang around. Sosa drove in 92 runs in 114 games in his comeback season for the Rangers, but struggled against right-handed pitching.  Apparently he has looking for regular playing time and/or decent money to play in '08; the Royals passed on his offer to play for them.  Ken Rosenthal noted back in February that the 2013 Hall of Fame voting could be mighty interesting.
Bad Boy Canseco is At it Again
2008-04-05 20:09:00
Not quite satisfied with exposing Mark McGwire and alluding that McGwire and Sammy Sosa's famous homerun duel was a completely steroid fueled endeavor in his first tell all book "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big", Jose Canseco is back yet again to spill a few more beans. In his no holds barred, unapologetic, tell all new book "Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars, and The Battle to Save Baseball", Jose now shines the light of guilt on ex Yankee player, Alex Rodriguez, who is also rumored to be having an affair with Canseco's latest wife. He also pulls player Magglio Ordonez into the mix.Any that read the first book remember that Canseco claims that he introduced Mark McGwire to steroids in 1988 and that he often injected McGwire while they were teammates.Truths here or bad blood? Many speculate that Canseco is just craving more limelight and attention now that his career is over, and that he also has axes to grind with some of his ex competitor...
Rogues, scandals and the Church of Baseball: S&R honors Babe Ruth
2008-03-31 19:30:00
Walt Whitman once said, “I see great things in baseball. It’s our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us.” You could look it up. - Annie Savoy I’ll promise to go easier on drinking and to get to bed earlier, but not for you, fifty thousand dollars, or two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars will I give up women. They’re too much fun. - Babe Ruth Today is Opening Day for America’s Pastime, and to mark the occasion S&R honors our newest Scrogue, George Herman Ruth. The Bambino. The Sultan of Swat. The Babe. What Ruth lacked as a scholar he more than made up for in roguishness, and his appointment to our masthead comes at a time when our game is facing its own set of troubles. The Mitchell Report is a desperately flawed effort, but BALCO, the Federal pursuit of Barry Bonds, admissions of cheating by Andy Pettite and others, the now-discredited denial of cheating by Rafael Palmeiro, the strange case of Mike McGw...

Sammy Sosa?s Dream World
2007-11-04 21:51:00
You know, I just don’t get baseball sometimes. Over the last 48 hours or so, several things have gnawed at me concerning Sammy Sosa’s rather cocky proclamation on Friday that he’s willing to play in the majors next year - provided, of course, that a team offers him a contract worth at least $7 million first. When ...

I obviously like talking about sports. I like to talk strategy, I like to talk trades. I’m fascinated by the political and financial sides of the game. Sammy Sosa?s blast helps lift Rangers over AL wild card leader Seattle 5-3
2007-08-27 07:36:00
Sammy Sosa hasn’t forgotten his trademark hop or how to hit the ball deep, even though he’s getting fewer chances to do it. Sosa, who has become a part-time player while Texas evaluates younger players, bounded out of the batter’s box after hitting a 430-foot, two-run home run in the first inning that put the ...
Trade Rumors - Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Sammy Sosa
2007-07-15 18:29:00
The July 31st dealine is 16 days away, and the local papers are beginning to report more and more activity. The Cleveland Plain Dealer joins the action reporting this from GM Mark Shapiro:I want to improve or reinforce the team.  If I had a choice to do one thing, it would probably be to add a reliever. But I will look to incrementally improve the team wherever I can." With the news that top  left-handed relief prospect Tony Sipp just had ligament replacement surgeyr performed by Dr. James Andrews, the team will have to hope Adam Miller can be effective in middle relief and/or get into the bidding on relievers such as the Pirates' Salomon Torres, Texas Rangers Eric Gagne and Akinori Otsuka, one of the Astro Trio (Lidge, Wheeler, and Qualls) or a Kansas City bullpen arm like Dave Riske or closer Octavio Dotel. As a matter of speculative fact, Detroit Free Press reports:"One American League club executive indicated Thursday that the Cleveland Indians have had discussions wi...

Sammy Sosa, 600, and the Hall of Fame
2007-06-21 20:13:00
Last night, Sammy Sosa hit his 600th home run, becoming just the fifth player in baseball history to do so. Ironically, he hit it against the Chicago Cubs, the team for whom he walloped 545 of those homers, including 243 over a four-year span. While that barrage arguably made him the game’s most popular player at the time, it has since raised numerous eyebrows as BALCO and other steroid scandals have come to light. Most famously, Sports Illustrated’s Rick Reilly smugly challenged Sosa to pee in a cup to prove his innocence; when Sosa refused, Reilly wrote a have-you-stopped-beating-your-w-ife column about it. Sosa, for his part, made a lackluster showing at the 2005 Congressional Steroid Circus, and many other writers treated his 2006 quasi-retirement as a de facto admission of guilt, working steroids into their narrative of his departure. For all of the innuendo surrounding Sosa, there’s no smoking gun, and far less circumstantial evidence surrounding him than his ...
Sammy Sosa swats the six-hundredth
2007-06-21 05:38:00
Slammin Sammy Sosa swatted home run # 600 tonight against his old team the Chicago Cubs.  Sosa's feat goes noted here in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Sammy Sosa's 600th homer resembled so many that came before - except this time the Chicago Cubs were on the other side. Playing for the Texas Rangers after a year out of baseball, Sosa became the fifth member of the 600-homer club Wednesday night when he connected against his former team. After driving a 1-2 pitch to right-center for a solo shot in the fifth inning, Slammin' Sammy bounced out of the batter's box with his trademark hop and thrust his right fist into the air before reaching first base. He was mobbed at home plate by his teammates while the scoreboard showed pictures of all five members of the elite club: Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sosa. How delicious is this irony?  In the past week the Ranger's President complained of signing a juicer, Juan Gonzalez to a...
Sammy Sosa Hits Number 600 [David Stefanini]
2007-06-21 05:03:00
Sammy Sosa hit his 600th career home run tonight. Most people are going to say it is no big deal because he is a cheater who used steroids. I think that is a stupid thing to say. He reached a milestone only achieved by 4 other human beings. Sosa has never been found guilty of using steroids. So before you run out and crucify him for reaching this milestone take a step back and think about it.Later this year, probably sooner rather than later, A-Rod is going to hit his 500th career home run. Should we celebrate that more because he clearly doesn't take steroids? No, Sosa hit 600 home runs. When he retires there will not be an asterisk, or any other kind of marking. One hundred years from now people will look at his career totals and say it is amazing what he accomplished. Why should wee be any different?http://img68.imagesha-ck.us/my.php?image=amerlegendsl-ogo5wj.gif
Checking Up On Sammy Sosa
2007-05-25 17:17:00
Earlier this year, both Nate Silver and myself posted Unfiltered pieces in regards to Sammy Sosa’s 2007 season. The outcomes ranged from pessimistic to desperately looking for something positive that could happen, but so far it looks as if Sosa has been able to shrug the both of us off and contribute to the Rangers offense. What I had said earlier in the year in regards to his production can be found below: If you add in the missing .029 points of BABIP to Sosa?s line, his 2005 was closer to .250/.324/.425, assuming all of the lost hits were singles. This certainly is not incredibly productive by any means, but it?s a bit more aesthetically pleasing than a sub-.300 OBP and sub-.400 SLG. His 2006 PECOTA projection was along the same lines as his expected 2005 line, pegging him for .242/.312/.418. Sosa didn?t play in 2006, so we can?t be too sure of how accurate this projection was, but given his expected production from 2005 it seems very accurate. His 2007 projection (in his 2...

More bad news for Michael Vick...this is from ESPN: Police conducting a drug investigation raided a Virginia house owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and found dozens of dogs, some injured and emaciated, as well as items associated with dog fighting, authorities said. State Police Sgt. D.S. Carr said Vick's relative, Davon Boddie, 26, lives in the house. Vick owns the property, but does not live there and was not present when a search warrant was executed in a drug investigation Wednesday night, Carr said.John Czarnecki breaks down the worst and best draft picks in the NFL over the years. The Kansas City Chiefs deny that they are trying to trade Larry Johnson. That could be considered a poor deal for the Chiefs. But remember when the Cowboys traded away Hershel Walker to the Vikings back in 1988? That trade gave the Cowboys a numerous amount of first round pick which they used to draft Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, and Emmitt Smith. Wouldn't the Vikings have liked...

Sammy Sosa Still Has Far to Go at Rangers Camp
2007-03-05 16:30:02
That dirt cheap, $500,000, non-guaranteed, minor league contract the Rangers doled out to ex-big leaguer Sammy Sosa to make a comeback attempt at 38 was more than merely a quaint gesture. With rookie Nelson Cruz trying to break into the majors at 26, former budding star Brad Wilkerson coming off two years of debilitating injuries at 30, and light-hitting leadoff man Kenny Lofton trying to squeeze out another year or two of service at 39, the Rangers need a big bat, a really big, big bat.Whether Sosa's bat is the answer seems doubtful at best, with fans, coaches, media and various other camp followers still waiting to see that familiar swing that not so long ago generated the last of Sosa's 588 career homers."...We saw (not a big swing but) an old swing as Sammy made his spring debut..." writes Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Randy Galloway. "In other words, the very early first impression of a guy who was out of baseball last season, and a total stiff the year before with the O...
