Chicago Cubs @ San Diego Padres: 7:05 CT/8:05 ET
2009-05-13 23:31:00 Yeah well, I'm not thrilled with this conversation, either I've gone back and forth today over whether or not to write this diary. I mean, it's not like it hasn't been discussed; there isn't much left of the dead horse. But while I was out driving around today, I listened to Dan Bernstein (who I normally love) sniff derisively at a fan who called in to suggest exactly what many of us have been saying: that Lee should sit until Hoffpauir cools off. From there, the conversation devolved into Dan berating the caller over how anyone could be so stupid as to think that Hoffpauir is a better ballplayer than Lee, which included calling those who frequent baseball blogs "sock puppets" and a rather unfair imitation of what was presumably the way Dan imagined the caller making out a lineup card. I kind of feel like the caller got skewered for ALL of us who hold this point of view, so let's clear a few things up. No, I don't think whoever has the higher batting average on any given da...

San Diego Padres Top Ten 2008 Minor League Prospects
2007-12-19 14:22:00 There's two sides of the coin when it comes to trading Minor League Prospects. Everyone, I think, is well aware of what happens when a team trades most of its prospects in order to get a cheap fix on a veteran player, such as has been the norm up until recently with the New York Yankees. The other

2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: San Diego Padres
2007-12-04 03:55:00 I was looking forward to reviewing a playoff team. According to Pythagoras, the Padres were the second-best team in the National League last year. Unfortunately, Pythagoras has been dead for a few millennia. For what it’s worth, Friar fans, I consider the Padres to be a playoff team for 2007. Record: 89-74, 3rd in NL West. Pythagorean Projection (Patriot formula): 89.55 wins (741 runs scored, 666 runs allowed, but it was the last three that hurt the most). Team Statistical Pages: Baseball Reference Baseball Prospectus FanGraphs MVN Blog: San Diego Spotlight Other Padres Resources: Latest News Contract Status Trade Rumors Overview: It’s really not fair to reduce the Padres season down to the playoff against the Rockies. One game isn’t a big enough sample size to tell you much of anything. I’ll leave the analysis of that game to the poets and philosophers. A lot of other things happened in 2007 for the Padres. Trevor Hoffman recorded his 500th career s...

They were 12th with a .411 SLG. Those numbers may be misleading - looking only at road games, the Padres were 6th in OBP and 3rd in SLG. Still, you'd like to have a few regulars top a .760 OPS at home next year (no one pulled it off in '07). Center field, left field, and second base are question marks heading into '08. There are viable in-house options. Antonelli was named "the best second base prospect in the game" by Kevin Goldstein after a breakout year. He played college ball; he'll be 23 in April. He's only got 49 games of Double A ...

2007-10-02 16:32:00 It's time for our weekly look at the latest intellectual debates taking place on sports message boards.ChargersTalk: "The Official Sympathy for Norv Turner and the Chargers Thread. Guys, lets cut this guy some slack please. Give him another chance. Afterall, it takes more than a head coach to lose a game ... Lets hang in there and stop calling for our GM's head too because, he really try to do the best he could given the situation ... A Day of Great Expectations and Melancholy [J. Mark English]
2007-09-30 18:06:00 The only thing that I am certain of today is that by eight o'clock tonight, I will be sitting in my seat at Giants Stadium, awaiting the kickoff to a Sunday Night Football match up between the Eagles and the Giants. The Giants come in with a 1-2 record, as are the Eagles. The result of the game will likely determine which team has the hopes of turning around its season, and which team may want to start early preparation for the 2008 draft. The implications of the Sunday night match-up will pale in comparison to the events that would have already occurred in Queens, slightly north of Giants Stadium, as well as the events that would have transpired a hundred miles south on I 95 in Philadelphia. The Mets and the Phillies, as well as the Padres, will set the mood for Met fans at Giants Stadium tonight. Can the Mets stave off a complete disaster by finishing with a desperate finish in their finale? Will the Phillies actually surpass their expectations of always choking? Will there be...

Updates to the Latest News In Baseball [Michael Vinciguerra]
2007-08-30 10:34:00 Greg Maddux aided the Padres to victory as they swept the Diamondbacks. Although Maddux did not record the win, this victory allowed the Padres, who were chasing the Diamondbacks for quite some time in their division, to take over first place. The Phillies beat the Mets on a bizarre ending play to pull to within three games behind the Mets in their division. Marlon Anderson was ruled out on a game ending interference call at second base in the ninth ending. This negated the possible tying run from scoring.Pedro Martinez is finally going to return to the MLB. He is scheduled to make a bullpen appearance when needed against the Braves on Friday before determining if he is ready to start his first full game after returning from rotator cuff surgery.Manager Cecil Cooper, who replaced former manager Phil Garner on Monday, earned his first victory as the Astros blank the Cards. Brandon Webb Finally Allows A Run [David Stefanini]
2007-08-23 16:40:00 In the first inning of last nights game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona pitcher Brandon Webb, allowed one run. It was the first run allowed in 42 innings of work for Webb. The streak started all the way back on July 20th against the Chicago Cubs. In the sixth inning of that game Webb allowed two runs; from that point on he didn't allow a single run until last night. Over that stretch his ERA went from 3.38, which is still very good, to an amazing 2.63, where it currently stands. Put his great ERA alongside his 14-8 record, and we have a Cy Young candidate. Webb's 42 consecutive innings without giving up a run left him 17 innings shy of the all-time record held by, Orel Hershiser. Since 1940, only four guys have had longer scoreless inning streaks. Though Webb did give up a run, he still won the game which is his sixth straight. He pitched seven innings, gave up two runs, and only allowed five hits. His next start will be on the 28th against the San Diego Padres, who curre...

Plumber and San Diego Padres fan catches Barry Bonds? record-tying home run

Danger Zone: San Diego Padres
2007-08-03 22:21:00 The danger zone for an increase in a pitcher's innings year-to-year is said to be 30. Team by team, let's identify those starters. Next up is the Padres. Each Padres starter should make about 11 more starts. Jake Peavy is on pace for about 218 innings, roughly a ten-inning increase if the Padres don't make the playoffs this year. He had some minor biceps soreness in July after dealing with some WBC-related injuries in 2006. Peavy always seems to manage his 200 innings each year. I'll label him Safe. Chris Young's oblique injury and inability to go deep into games should result in no increase this year; he's Safe. David Wells should reach around 175 innings after tossing 85 in 2006. A massive increase no doubt, but Boomer knows his limitations out there. His age would make him Risky for 2008 regardless. Greg Maddux, well, he's always Safe. I have Justin Germano throwing around 182 innings after throwing 162 last year. ...

Trade Rumors - Eric Gagne, Mike Piazza, San Diego padres, Philadelphia Phil
2007-07-14 21:48:00 On Thursday, Joel Zumaya played catch with fellow DL resident, Fernando Rodney. If reports continue to be positive, the Rangers may lose a potential suitor for Eric Gagne, who will want to close as he re-enters free agency this winter after taking a one-year deal with the Rangers. Gagne has a limited no-trade clause that gives him veto power over trades to 18 teams, and he would be wise to execute it if he is going to be dealt to a team that isn't going to put him in the closers role. Detroit would be one of those if Zumaya looks like he will be back before or soon after the July 31st trading deadline. San Francisco Chronicle reports DH Mike Piazza will spend the next week-to-ten days rehabbing in AAA Sacramento and Class A Stockton. That is a long time, and the A's have been dragging their feet on activating Piazza thanks to the success of DH Jack Cust and 1B Dan Johnson. Piazza' agent says the A's and Piazza have a gentleman's agreement that Piaz...

After a down year, San Diego Padres? Jake Peavy dominating again (AP)
2007-04-26 22:00:00 A year ago, Jake Peavy pitched with a sore shoulder and went 11-14 with a 4.09 ERA. The shoulder is no longer giving him trouble. And that’s trouble for NL hitters. San Diego’s 25-year-old ace is 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA — and he earned no decision in perhaps the finest game of his five-year ...

BAPR Plus: San Diego Padres
2007-04-02 03:05:00 As we move on to the National League, we’ll once again start with the West Division. Who’s Hot: Kevin Kouzmanoff has been everything the Padres expected this spring, he’s hit for power (nine extra-base hits), hit for average (.339/.412/.576 in 59 at-bats), and shown better defense than expected. Righthander Kevin Cameron, a Rule 5 pick from the Twins, earned a spot in the bullpen with a solid spring. He went 0-0, 3.68 with 16 strikeouts (but also eight walks) in 15 innings. “He has great stuff,” pitching coach Bud Black said. “And he has great natural control. He deserves an opportunity to pitch at this level.” Outfielder Will Venable is still quite a ways from San Diego, but he didn’t look lost in big league camp, hitting .360/.407/.440. Who’s Not: Righthander Andrew Brown has enticed three teams with his plus fastball and slider, but he’s never shown the ability to command either pitch well enough to pitch effectively in ...
