Stuff from San Fernando Valley
2010-10-28 20:03:00 If pure sound had the capability to project images on a blank wall, Mini Mansions would be worthy projectionists. On a break from Queens of the Stone Age, Michael Shuman melded heads and locked arms with longtime friends Tyler Parkford and Zach Dawes in a dusty room in the San Fernando Valley. Here, they began a collaborative séance out of which birthed Mini Mansions in January of 2009. Though their triangle is usually confined to piano, bass, and a cocktail drum kit, the LA-based trio generates a Technicolor spectrum of sound drawn from the baroque, gothic, psychedelic, and cinematic realms. Their debut self-titled release, due out this fall via Rekords Rekords, curtseys to the past, bows to the present, and foreshadows a progressively more abstract future. Three vignettes are the structural frameworks upon which Mini Mansions builds, burgeoning into a wildly colorful, narrative fresco when listened to in sequence, straight through. Although Mini Mansions? intention wa...
McMansion In San Fernando Valley Ca.
2007-12-30 20:31:00 You have seen it all over the Valley, on quiet, tree-lined streets filled with modest, mid-century ranch homes, you suddenly encounter a humongous " Tuscan-Style" mausoleum that covers virtually every square inch of its lot and looms over neighboring back and side yards. In an other scenario, in an RA-zoned neighborhood of substantial lots that was initially created to allow homeowners to keep horses, small farm animals and fowl, (Walnut Acares), one large large lot is being cleaved into three cramped parcels that will soon feature a trio of gigantic pseudo-Spanish monstrosities. Or may be you are driving along a hillside lot so steep even a mountain goat would not try to scale it, you see a construction crew trying to erect a 6,000 sq.ft. Mediterranean McManson before rains or seismic conditions let loose an avalanche of mud. All three are common scenes in quaint suburban West Valley neighborhoods and along Mulholland corridor, substantially altering...
Another Great Contribution
2007-11-20 03:22:00 Yep...Another great contribution by yours truly to the LA Blogosphere. This time, as you can see below, my current contribution was the photo I took last night of the fog rolling into the valley. I took the shot with my Canon Powershot SD800IS and set it with a 10 second shutter time. Of course, this post now makes it the second post in a row where I have used the same photo. Aroma Cafe
2007-07-07 02:40:00 Nestled in the adorable shopping area of Tujunga Village, this amazing café is consistently packed with people. Whether hopping in for a piece of delicious red velvet cake and a cappuccino, or staying to enjoy a scrumptious brunch or mouth-watering dinner, this spot is ridiculously addictive. Wonderfully pleasant staff-members greet diners at the front counter where you will find exquisite products such as Marie Belle teas stacked before you. The pastry case, alone, is drool-worthy ? filled with every type of cake imaginable and cookies big enough to satisfy even Cookie Monster. If you?re stopping in for brunch, the Brioche French Toast is incredible and the Breakfast Burrito will leave you wanting to come back the next morning to devour another. For dinner, they serve up an array of large salads, Panini sandwiches and fantastic burgers to name just a few. Once you?ve ordered at the front counter, you take your number and seat yourself either indoors or on their relaxing patio...

An Image of Domestic Bliss in the San Fernando Valley
2006-09-21 15:03:01 So saturated are we here in West Hollywood with images of the buff physiques of young men that it seems that the only way we can find happiness is if only we look like that — or sleep with someone who looks like that. And yet I find that the happiest gay men I know are often the most ordinary looking. Back when I was president of Log Cabin of Northern Virginia, I looked forward to putting our monthly mailing together at the home of this couple in late middle-age, both bald and paunchy. When I was around them, it never occurred to me how far they were for our cultural ideal. They were the ideal. It was like being around my most beloved uncles. Not only did I delight in their company, but they made me realize that how a gay man could age with grace. Last night I had a vision of a similar couple, though much closer to my age. While at a dinner for my college entertainment group in the San Fernando Valley, I saw across the room two men facing each other in a booth. From the...
