San Francisco Giants

White Sox fans, your World Series team is the San Francisco Giants
2010-10-27 10:36:00
The strongest spotty tangential argument could be made for the Giants over the Rangers in the former player category. The Giants boast former White Sox '05ers Juan Uribe and Aaron Rowand, and former farmhand Javier Lopez....the guy we wound up trading for David Riske in '06....uh....perhaps just forget about Lopez for now. The Texas Rangers have absolutely no one to direct our fondness toward, unless you just want to assume that Darren Oliver is so old that he probably played for the White Sox before anyone (including baseballreference.com) remembers.

Admit it, this is a lot better than a week ago While Cubbie Nation attempts to recover from the shock of discovering that Ryan Theriot is now a power hitter, the Cubs prepare to take on the Giants once again. On the upside, most HRs hitters don't steal a ton of bases. Perhaps if Ryan begins to see himself as the next post-1998 Barry Bonds, he'll also imagine a bum knee and will quit trying (and failing) to steal bases. All we can do is pray and wait. And while we're waiting, I would like to take this opportunity to mock those in my fantasy league who made fun of me for taking Theriot with my final pick. ppppbbbblllllllt! Today it's Sean Marshall (0-1) against Tim Lincecum (2-1). Normally, I would say that we're not going to hit anything today, but with the new-and-improved Power Theriot, all things are now possible. The game is on CSN, but for those unfortunate souls living outside beautiful Chicagoland, we'll make sure to let you know when to shower Theriot with roses. Lin...

Keeping the streak alive ---photo by oscar alexander At the 3:00 minute mark comes the advice I live my life by: "Albert, you pierced the toast. So what?" So Zambrano is on the DL. So what? He hasn't been that great lately, anyway. And how do we know that Randy Wells isn't the next Cy Young? We'll never know if we leave him to rot in the minors, right? RIGHT? WELl HE COULD BE!!!!!!! What? We called up Bobby Scales? Doesn't he play 3B? Isn't ARam due back today? Uh . . .okay. Alas, Friday is long way off. Before we get there, we have to get past the Giants, who have a record almost identical to ours, even though I seriously couldn't name a single person on the Giants right now. Is Edgar Renteria out ther now? I don't even know. I guess I'll recognize some people when they come up to bat. Ryan Dempster (1-1, 5.40) takes on Jonathan Sanchez (1-1, 2.60). A lot of baseball types are looking to see if Dempster can repeat his stellar 2008 season, but we here at LOHO have our eyes...

2008-04-29 07:04:00
After starting the season with a 0-6 record and a 7.53 ERA, the San Francisco Giants have decided to move Barry Zito to the bullpen. Zito was unhappy with the decision, but also maintained his faith in management. For those who are unhappy with Barry Zito’s performance this season and last, it’s only understandable given ...
San Francisco Giants: Fantasy Panic?
2008-04-04 18:49:00
I admit it.  Despite the season being less than a week old, I am terrified of thinking what the San Francisco Giants will do in terms of run production.   While they have scored one fewer run than the Detroit Tigers, I don't have that same gnawing sense of doom about the Tigers slow start as I do with the Giants. The Tigers have 9 XBH (6 doubles and 3 HRs).  The Giants have a double by Jose Castillo, a player not good enough to play for the Florida Marlins.  The Giants season appear to be at the outset of making history. As a result of this fear (irrational?), I wouldn't spend significant money on any of the current starting hitters for the Giants with the exception of C Bengi Molina, who should get 60 RBIs and be relatively valuable, and Aaron Rowand, whose $60MM contract guarantees he plays everyday this season.  All the rest are headed towards seasons where they drive in runs or score them at levels that proof to be the exception to the Rule of Getting ...

Tim Lincecum provided a bright spot in a rather dismal spring for the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. Lincecum struck out nine in five no-hit innings and the Giants beat the cross-bay Oakland Athletics 3-0. “The first inning I was big,” Lincecum said. “My first inning was like seven or eight pitches and I ...

NL West Anaylsis : 2008 Preview The NL West division winner should still need 88+ wins to capture the division. I don’t see a repeat of the 90, 90 & 89 totals from 2007. You have three good teams in the east, four good teams in the west and pretty much one, maybe two good squads ...

Matt Cain avoided a “goofy” start and turned his final outing in the desert into a gem. A day after Barry Zito threw his best outing, Cain followed suit with a five-hitter over six innings. He walked one and struck out eight in the San Francisco Giants’ 8-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. ...

Whose Line-Up Is Worse: St. Louis Cardinals Or San Francisco Giants
2008-03-04 12:19:00
After a week of looking at the spring boxscores of the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, I decided to line-up both teams starting eight and pulling-in Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA projections to see which one is truly worse. The Cardinals clearly look better. Looking at the projections for the Giants, I can't help guessing the players involved are not expected to get a lot of playing time for whatever reason - age, injury, etc. Outside of 1B Dan Ortmeier, every Giant has projected numbers worse than those they produced in the prior season. Is this a reasonable expectation? Poor Matt Cain
2007-12-15 00:23:00
Matt Cain was flat out awesome in 2007.  He pitched 200 innings, surrendering only 173 hits.  He also struck out 163 batters and posted a 3.65 ERA.  In fact, of pitchers with 200 or more innings, the only one who gave up less hits than Cain was Cy Young winner Jake Peavy.  And, Cain?s 3.65 ERA placed him tenth best in the entire National League.  Reread this paragraph and let the numbers sink in. Matt Cain?s record in 2007 was 7-16.  7 wins and 16 losses!  Yes, that is correct! Brad Penny, in 208 innings, gave up 200 hits and struck out only 135. And do you want to know his record?  16-4! If that is not a clear-cut indicator of how win-loss records can be deceiving, we are going to take a microscopic look at Matt Cain?s 2007 campaign.  Afterwards, try and argue that his 7-16 season was not better than any NL pitcher not named Peavy or Webb. UNHITTABLE FACTOR The amount of hits a pitcher surrenders is an oft-overlooked statistic because most people want to know about WHIP (walks+hits...
Bonds Wants To Play In '08
2007-12-06 04:49:00
Barry Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, said this evening that his client still wants to play in 2008 despite his legal troubles.  It seems that his trial is unlikely to begin until after the season ends, so he'll be available. A team willing to take on the baggage should be given a huge discount.  Maybe a half price deal - $8MM or so.  Signing Barry might be unpopular with the fanbase, but winning would probably overrule it. showad();
Odds and Ends: Guillen, Crede, Hamilton, Boone
2007-12-05 21:06:00
Rounding up some of the day's random rumors and tidbits... Jose Guillen might get a light suspension for his exploits. There was a report that the Brewers were close to obtaining Joe Crede, but it was published last night. The BBWAA approved a new resolution for 2013.  Any player with a contract provision linked to a major award of theirs will not be considered for that award.  Makes sense - to repeat Curt Schilling's situation.  Curt Schilling could get a million bucks by netting one Cy Young vote in 2008.  The BBWAA would rather preserve its right to have members make off-the-wall votes on occasion without bribery being accused. The Reds traded Buck Coats to the Jays.  They also released Jorge Cantu.  They now have an open spot on the 40-man roster. Could the Rays re-acquire Josh Hamilton?  There's speculation on the topic in Nashville. Buster Olney says Aaron Boone interests the Giants, Nationals, and Brewers. showad();
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: San Francisco Giants

Record: 71-91, 5th in NL West.  For a team that had that much attention paid to them in the past year, they were… a last place team. Troy Percival Close To Deal With Rays
2007-11-29 05:07:00
UPDATE, 11-28-07 at 10pm: Olney is still certain Percival is going to the Rays on a multiyear deal.  One other note is that the Giants had been in on him. UPDATE, 11-28-07 at 7:40pm: Not so fast, says Ken Rosenthal.  The Rays may be in the lead on Percival because he is close to Joe Maddon and they'll offer two years.  But the Yankees are in the mix offering a setup role and the Brewers are offering a one-year deal and a closer job. FROM 11-28-07 at 3:40pm: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Rays are "moving toward a deal" to sign free agent reliever Troy Percival.  This could give them a potentially solid veteran relief group in Juan Rincon, Dan Wheeler, Percival, and Al Reyes. Percival was known to have been seeking a multiyear deal (I'm guessing two years, $10MM or so).  Other suitors: Yankees, Brewers, Giants, and Astros. showad();

Barry Bonds Indicted
2007-11-15 23:48:00
Per The Big Lead, Barry Bonds has been indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice.  Keep in mind that if Bonds is convicted of perjury, he could get several months of jail time. Rob Becker does a nice job of breaking down this situation.  He considers five years in prison the worst possible outcome for Bonds (even if found guilty of all charges).  Most likely he'll get little or no prison time, since he doesn't have a criminal record and may plea bargain. showad();
Watching the San Francisco Giants in Action
2007-11-15 04:19:00
San Francisco has the one of the largest Filipino Community in the US. My brother who is now a permanent resident of San Francisco invited me last spring for a short vacation. I was very excited for 3 reasons: one, it is an all expenses-paid vacation (yippee!); two, to finally see the famous San Francisco Bridge; and three, a chance to see the San Francisco Giants at play ?in real life, and probably a chance to take home a souvenir with an autograph of any of their great players. However, to my disappointment, my schedule was not within the playing season. The redeeming grace though, my brother purchased SF Giants Spring Training tickets in advance. He knew that a baseball fanatic like me will be disappointed if was not able to see one of my favorite teams in action. Well, being a first time viewer of big league ball games in real life, the training games were still a thrill to watch. I cannot wait to have my next vacation and probably have within the playing season.
Cafardo's Latest: Drew, Pettitte, Lincecum
2007-11-04 08:15:00
The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo works his way through all the teams in anticipation of Monday's GM meetings.  Here are some of the rumors we haven't seen much before. The Rays want a defensive-minded shortstop and veteran starter.  Maybe they'll make a play for Cesar Izturis or Omar Vizquel.  A rehab guy like Freddy Garcia or Randy Wolf could be interesting. The Indians are looking for a power bat for left field.  Haven't seen them mentioned with Barry Bonds at all, could that work? Cafardo proposes the idea of the Cubs acquiring J.D. Drew as their OBP-minded right field acquisition.  Drew has a limited no-trade clause allowing him to block two unknown teams.  I imagine the Red Sox would have to eat some salary. Cafardo also speculates that Andy Pettitte could follow Joe Torre to L.A.  Pettitte has previously talked about a Yankees or retirement stance. The idea of the Giants trading Tim Lincecum seemed crazy at first, right?  Cafardo sa...
Giants Interested In Kosuke Fukudome
2007-10-26 20:21:00
According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are "seriously interested" in Kosuke Fukudome.  The Padres will be in on him as well.  Shea picked up this chatter from Japanese media at the World Series. McCovey Chronicles is cautiously intrigued, but only around a 3/24 level.  Mike Plugh has speculated that Fukudome could cost $12-15MM over three or four years, but that was written in May.  Fukudome saw his power production decline and finished the year with elbow surgery.  Still, .294/.443/.520 is a great baseline even if it translates to 15 HR power. This isn't the first time the Giants have been linked to Fukudome.  Susan Slusser mentioned the possibility in early September.  Other teams said to be in the mix: the Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox, and Padres.  I'm sure that list will continue to grow.  Perhaps the Yanks will exit the picture since they plan to exercise Bobby Abreu's option.
Bonds Comments
2007-10-25 22:45:00
Barry Bonds made a few comments on his future at a recent speech.  As usual, Barry's comments seemed kind of weird.  He was asked whether he'd play for the Giants for $5MM, and replied: I told Peter Magowan that if I'm a part-time player, I'm still better than your full-time player, and it's a wise idea to keep me.  There's still time.  Things might change.  Hmm.  OK.  I don't think that really means anything.  I won't believe the Giants are leaving the door open until I hear it from them.  And Bonds never answered the $5MM question. Meanwhile, Bonds associate and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal opined that the home run king might retire this winter.  Bonds said a month ago that he plans on continuing his career.
Braves Notes: Hampton, Lowry, Andruw
2007-10-09 04:35:00
Mike Hampton makes $15MM next year, and the Braves aren't getting any relief from the Rockies or Marlins.  However, it turns out the Braves actually spread around those payments so that they'd pay out about $8MM to Hampton in each year of the deal. This is confirmed by Bill Shanks of Scout.com, for starters.  Shanks notes that the Braves owe $8.25MM to Hampton next year because of amortization.  I've heard that David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said something similar in the comments of one of his blog posts, but it's been buried somewhere.  Bottom line, the Braves have $7MM more than we thought they did.  A $95MM payroll would give Atlanta some wiggle room to add a starter. It's not a stretch to add Tom Glavine, with this new information.  However, O'Brien thinks the Braves need more.  While Dan Haren or Joe Blanton may be out of reach, Noah Lowry seems a more realistic target.  The point is to find a decent young contro...

Braun's Defense Should Cost Him Rookie of the Year
2007-09-28 15:38:00
Milwaukee Brewers 3B Ryan Braun is an amazing hitter. But to call him a butcher on defense is an insult to knife-wielding swine slicers. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to call Braun the worst defensive player of any starter in the Major Leagues. The Brewers lost 9-5 to the San Diego Padres on Thursday, blowing a chance to gain a game on the Chicago Cubs, who had lost earlier in the day. One of the main culprits in the loss was Braun, who committed not one, not two, but three errors at third base.Braun's is fielding is so atrocious, it should be enough for Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to win the National League Rookie of the Year. Will it happen? Probably not. Writers often forget there are two parts to the game and concentrate solely on offensive numbers. And there is no doubt Braun has had an amazing year at the plate, but Tulowitzki isn't that far off. In 440 at-bats, Braun has hit .325/.370/.639, with 24 doubles, 34 HR and 95 RBI. Meanwhile, in 590 at-bats, Tulowitzki h...

Giants Hope To Bring Vizquel Back For '08
2007-09-14 21:20:00
According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, there are "strong indications" that the Giants want Omar Vizquel to man shortstop for them in 2008.  Vizquel is earning $4MM this year; perhaps $3MM or so would get it done for next year.  Vizquel would like to come back. If his goal is 3,000 hits, though, that will take at least three more seasons. Retaining Vizquel is not what I suggested in my Giants Needs and Luxuries post a few days ago.  I understand that Vizquel's sparkling defense helps the pitching staff and his veteran leadership can't be measured. (Though one could make the argument that the pitching staff would be equally if less directly helped by a shortstop with some offensive value).  My '08 Giants are committed to rebuilding, and that means giving Omar's 600 plate appearances to a young player.  Even if the Giants don't specifically have a shortstop prospect ready to go, they can get more ABs for Kevin Frandsen if Vi...

Durham, Roberts, and Aurilia have been offensive black holes for the Giants, and they'll be eating up $18.5MM as members of the '08 club.  Feliz and Vizquel have been terrible as well, but at least their contracts are up. I have to stop right here and say that this team absolutely must write off 2008 as a complete rebuilding year.  There's just not enough offensive talent, you...
Bonds For Cust?
2007-09-09 17:43:00
Scott Ostler has a suggestion in today's San Francisco Chronicle: some kind of Barry Bonds for Jack Cust trade.  How would this work, with Bonds becoming a free agent after the season?  Cust, meanwhile, is under Oakland's control for another five seasons or so. Cust has easily been the Athletics' most valuable hitter this year, despite spending April in the minors.  Bonds' season currently ranks 16th among all hitters for VORP even in only 458 plate appearances. The Giants have a chance to save $700,000 this year by keeping Bonds from reaching 525 plate appearances.  It'll probably go right down to the wire.  Preventing him from reaching the last incentive would seem petty, and could mark the end of Barry's long relationship with the team.  Problem is, no one can figure out another team that would have him.

Roddick's career record against Federer now stands at 1-14, for a .066 winning percentage. While this news must be disconcerting for Roddick and his fans, there are some baseball fans who feel a similar despair when their teams play a certain opponent. In honor of Roddick's wretched record, here is a look at the 10 worst winning percentages in head-to-head match-ups in Major League Baseball history.(Criteria: Records from 1901 through 2007, with a minimum of 162 head-to-head games, in the regular season only. AT&T Park - San Francisco -Inspired by the Sports Guy's recent photo album entry detailing his recent visit to Tampa Bay for a Red Sox vs Devil Rays game, I thought it would be fun to post some pics of a recent road game of my own. This past April, my wife and I spent a couple of nights in San Francisco before heading off to Maui during our amazing honeymoon. Let me say that no trip to the city by the bay is complete without a visit to AT&T park, and after visiting during a heated rivalry (Giants vs. Dodgers) catching a regular Marlins game now here at home is even more depressing than usual. There she is, AT&T Park. She's a beaut! Even without having ever been to San Francisco before, we somehow decided with great certainty that the ballpark was within walking distance from Fisherman's Wharf, where we were staying. Wrong. We walked...and walked...and walked some more. Two hours later, we're still walking, yet because of these......street signs, which were visible for miles befor...

Vizquel Claimed Off Waivers, Pulled Back
2007-08-20 23:01:00
On August 16th, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark mentioned that Omar Vizquel, among many others, had cleared waivers.  Stark's colleague Buster Olney heard differently, however.  According to Olney, Vizquel was indeed claimed but no deal was reached and he was withdrawn.  Olney believes the Tigers may have made the claim, or perhaps the Indians as a block. Vizquel still doesn't strike out much, but his batting average dipped to .245 this year.  He could've helped a contender though.  I'm not sure whether the Elias Bureau will rate him a Type A or B free agent after this year, as he was solid in 2006. Here's a look at the updated Players Who Have Cleared Waivers post; Jack Wilson is out there for whoever missed out on Vizquel.

Controlled Fury: Tim Lincecum   Thanks to loyal Mop Up Duty ready Graeme for pointing this article out to me on my fantasy darling Tim Lincecum. It is a breakdown of Lincecum’s mechanics and how he can extract such force from his slight frame.   Controlled Fury: Tim Lincecum Possessing a slight frame myself, I am fascinating by guys who can bring serious heat while weighing 165lbs.  The names Pedro Martinez, Jason Frasor, Billy Wagner and others spring to mind. Add SF Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum to the list.  Although it looks like he wakes up every morning with a sore neck, the writers at baseball think factory assure he has an efficient delivery.  Pay close attention to how in slow motion it looks like he steps over an imaginary object in his delivery, almost jumping off the mound. Pretty interesting.

With 50 days remaining in the 2007 season (8/11/07 to 09/30/07), the Giants finally recalled the reliever GM Brian Sabean said would be the closer in 2007 - RHP Brian Wilson.  Unfortuantely, Wilson suffered an appendectomy and a muscle strain on his side in the middle of the year.  If this weren't enough, he was so wild prior this string of misfortune, that his season numbers - 24 BBs in 34.1 AAA innings - hide the fact he has been lights out since July.  Over 18 innings, he has 18 Ks and just 8 BBs.  More interestingly, Wilson has not yielded a single HR this season and has a very impressive .185 BAA.  His GB/FB ratio of 1.29 is also a plus. Could Wilson replace Brad Hennessey as the Giants closer over the next seven weeks?  Yes, but that seems unlikely.  With struggling 7th and 8th inning options, the team can elect to pitch Wilson in important late-game situations without exposing him to the 9th.  With success in those roles, the team woul...

Barry Bonds Breaks the All Time Home Run Record [J. Mark English]
2007-08-08 07:08:00
Call him a villain, call him a cheater, call him a product of his time...or some may even call him a hero. Whatever you call him, now you must recognize Barry Bonds as the all time home run king. Bonds went yard, causing delirium in San Francisco. You can watch the video here.Otherwise here is a write up from the AP... I'd write my thoughts now but I'm too tired from coming home from the Mets loss against the Braves to write anything profound....This is from Janie McCauley of the San Francisco Chronicle:Barry Bonds hit No. 756 to the deepest part of the ballpark Tuesday night, and hammered home the point: Like him or not, legitimate or not, he is baseball's new home run king. Bonds broke Hank Aaron's storied record in the fifth inning, connecting on a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik. Three days earlier, Bonds tied the Hammer with a shot to left-center in San Diego. "Thank you very much. I got to thank all of you, all the fans here in San Francisco. It's been fantasti...

Bonds And #755
2007-08-05 08:37:00
An interesting fact occurred to me today after noticing Barry Bonds cranked #755 off Clay Hensley.  Hensley tested positive for performance enhancers back in April of 2005.  Seems more fitting than if Bonds had nailed one off Greg Maddux.  Sometimes we forget the little people busted for performance enhancers.  Fortunately Baseball's Steroid Era is keeping track. Is it possible that Bonds could crank #756 off a once-juiced pitcher too?  Probably not, unless he enters a long slump until the Giants face the Brewers on the 24th.  In that case he could nail one off Derrick Turnbow.
San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds hits 755th home run, ties Hank Aar
2007-08-05 05:55:00
Barry Bonds swung, took a half-dozen steps and clapped his hands. With no trace of a smile but a strong shot for all the doubters, he caught Hank Aaron and tied the career home run record Saturday night. No. 755 was an opposite-field drive to left-center field, moving Bonds within one swing of having baseball’s ...

Danger Zone: San Francisco Giants
2007-08-04 03:29:00
The danger zone for an increase in a pitcher's innings year-to-year is said to be 30.  Team by team, let's assess the risk of certain starters.  Next up is the Giants.  They have a fairly abusive manager in Bruce Bochy. Each Giants starter should make about 11 more starts. Noah Lowry seems likely to throw about 202 innings this season.  That'd be a 32 inning increase from the 170 he threw in 2006, when he dealt with an oblique strain, a blister, a tender elbow, and reduced velocity.  To his credit, he added ten pounds of muscle and did yoga before this season.  But I still have to label him Risky, which is one reason why the Giants should've aggressively shopped him in July. Matt Cain looks to be on pace for about 198 innings, compared to 190.6 last year.  I don't know what to make of Cain's reduced strikeout rate this year, but I don't think he's hurt.  Some within the Giants organization view him as their future closer.  Regard...
Matt Morris goes to The Pittsburgh Pirates from San Francisco Giants
2007-08-01 11:41:00
The San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Morris has been acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pittsburgh Pirates sent rookie outfielder Rajai Davis and a player to be named to the Giants in return. By losing Matt Morris the Giants are basically getting rid of salary payments, as they look to rebuild one of the oldest teams in ...
I Don't Like Barry Bonds [A.J. Cordi]
2007-07-31 04:59:00
I just wanted to drop a quick rant before Tuesdays game between the San Francisco Giants the Los Angeles Dodgers. It's no secret that I don't like Barry Bonds. I've expressed my dislike here, here, implied it here and here, shared my dislike of Bonds with the S.F. fans here, referred to it here, and have commented on it tons times on this blog. This guy shouldn't even be allowed to bat. When is the last time you actually saw him run to first base? If he doesn't hit a home run, he barely jogs down the baseline. And people expect this alleged steroid-using douche bag cheater to be in the Hall of Fame? I wouldn't give him the honor of wiping my ass. He plays for Barry Bonds, not his team. If I owned the Giants, I would make him pay his own salary.Bonds will be facing Dodgers' Starting Pitcher Brad Penny (13-1) on Tuesday. I hope Penny walks him every time. And that's my rant...The End.http://img68.imageshack.us/-my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5wj-.gif
