At the farthest end of the semi-oval stretch of white sand is a small rock/island shaped like a soldier's helmet. Olango Island is known as the place where migratory birds land from their breeding sites in North China, Siberia and Japan. There, they feed on various food items that can be found in the shores of the island in order to build up their reserves for the next flight of their trip: towards New Zealand and Australia. Known as the southward migration, this trip is undertaken by birds in anticipation of the winter and the scarcity of food supply that it will bring to them. From late July until late November or early December, the birds fly southwards from their breeding grounds stopping at Olango to “refuel†for the 3000 kilometer to 15000-kilometer trip to their next stops. By February until May, the birds once again fly back to their breeding sites in a northward trip. Again, they temporarily stop by Olango to feed in order to sustain themselves...
