Not one of us: South Carolina Governor Sanford
2009-07-01 11:45:00 We, in the atheist community, have a saying: "Thank God, he's not one of us!" South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford was quoted, yesterday, in the CNN story S. C. Attorney General to review Sanford's travel records as saying, regarding his decision to not resign, "I would ultimately be a better person and of more service in whatever doors God opened next in life if I stuck around to learn lessons rather than running and hiding down at the farm."...
Sanford scandal stirs sexist stereotypes
2009-06-30 21:25:00 The way some media has been covering South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's affair with a woman from Argentina plays into some sexist stereotypes about Latina women. She was called a "hottie," an "Argentine firecracker" and his "Latin lover" by the New York Daily News. Some headlines have made the obvious "it takes two to tango" or "last tango" reference. Could that be more cliché?But something about the objectification of this woman, Maria Belen Shapur, really disturbs me. She is a successful, multilingual businesswoman. But in every media outlet she is constantly referred to as his "mistress." It makes her sound like a kept woman and clearly she was supporting herself and her two children.Where is the word that is the male equivalent...
Maria Belen Chapur First Photos: Mark Sanford?s Mistress Video
2009-06-26 15:08:00 The first photos of Gov. Mark Sanford?s alleged mistress, Maria Belen Chapur (or is it Maria Belen Shapur!?), have finally surfaced. There are photos and a video of a woman named Belen Chapur but they do not look like the same woman to us (check out photos and video below)… Maria Belen Chapur is a 43-year-old ...
Sanford scandal detracts from issues (& scandals) of greater relevance
2009-06-25 23:00:00 To a large extent, Mark Sanford is responsible for the public embarrassment he now suffers for his extramarital liaison with an Argentinian charmer. In an ideal world perhaps, a politician’s privates affairs should not be made public unless they impact his professional duties. (Well, in this case, they did with the governor going incommunicado “for ...

Mark Sanford: Disappointing Conservatives with his Indiscretion
2009-06-25 06:02:00 Earlier today, I tried working on a post on Obama, gay bloggers and DADT. But, for some reason, I couldn’t think to string words together to make a coherent and thoughtful sentence, so I decided to take the afternoon off from blogging. (I do hope to get that up before I go to bed tonight, ...

Ralph Hughes, Brian Blair, and Mark Sanford Prove Themselves Typical
2009-06-25 02:48:00 Three Republicans continue The Suck. Ralph Hughes died owing more than $60 million in back taxes. Brian Blair beat the shit out of his teenage sons on Father’s Day. Mark Sanford cheated on his wife. None of this surprises me. A rich man gets greedy and leaves his heirs to deal with the consequences? Yawn. Wake me when Wall Street 2 comes out. A former wrestler produces two problem children and beats them when they turn out like their old man? Yawn. Wake me when Brian Blair and Hulk Hogan star in their own reality show. And I don’t even care about what Mark Sanford does…I mean, have you seen his wife or heard her go on and on about The Lord? Christ. Don’t cry for him, Argentina. I try very hard not to get angry about what is typical. What really pisses me off is the goddamn hypocrisy. Ralph Hughes, Mr. Moral Courage Award, supported politicians who railed against welfare moms and illegal immigrants. He hailed himself as fiscally conservative and hated peop...
Governor Sanford: Can you explain the "Sanctity of Marriage" to me again?
2009-06-24 22:40:00 I wish I could say I was surprised.Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina, the now-former Chairman of the Republican Governors Association has been stricken by a dreaded disease now reaching pandemic proportions in the GOP."Can't-Keep-It-In-My-Pants- Priapism"This newly emergent disease seems to be caused by the marriage of gay men & women. It seems, as predicted within the Republican party, that when the love of a same-sex couple is granted legal status, another "traditional marriage" bites the dust. Scores of prominent Republicans have been afflicted by ridiculously engorged erections that are only satiated when inflicted on someone other than their legal spouse. Some have even turned to tapping under stalls to find relief for the member that knows no vows, feels no remorse, and who is supposed to be under the careful and well articulated control of his owner.Alas, gay marriage has undone all this. The sanctity of marriage has been violated and a vengeful God is now punishi...

Fred Sanford Ain't Got Nuttin' On Me!
2008-06-08 19:46:00 Did you ever just look around your home and wonder how in the world it became such a disaster area? We've been really busy this week. Mr. Schmitty is working all weekend. That leaves me and my brood, plus friends.I just looked out the front window, the back door, and around the main floor of my house. We have a split and the main floor consists of an open floor plan of a living room, dining room, and kitchen. I had to sit down because I am just completely overwhelmed and have no idea where to start first. So instead, I'll blog and complain about it to all of my bloggy friends. This is what I see:The back yard; Grass that comes up to R.'s ankles. I should strike the grass because our grass is made up mostly of clover right now. I hate putting chemicals on the lawn because of the kids and our dog. There are a gazillion toys strewn all over. The shed door is open. The umbrella on the patio table is half open. The swing set, that my kids have completely outgrown, is actually bent from...

The State: E-mails, letters show depth of Sanford involvement
2008-05-26 05:47:00 THE STATE NEWSPAPER SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON GOVERNOR’S ‘ACTIVE ROLE’ IN DEVELOPMENT DEALS According to e-mails and letters obtained by The State newspaper under the Freedom of Information Act, Gov. Mark Sanford was “involved heavily” in multiple development deals between the state and contractors — something that critics claim usurps the bidding process laid out by state law — the latest of which was the sale of Port Royal. But if you read The Palmetto Scoop, which broke that story three months ago, you already knew that. The newspaper said the documents showed Sanford personally thanked local residents who wrote letters to the editor supporting his approach to developing the land, looked to help local shrimpers who worried their business will be harmed by development plans, and apologized to a campaign contributor and bidder for the land whose ties to the governor were the subject of news stories. That campaign contributor, as TPS first reported...
Sanford launches new ad for slush fund
2008-05-24 23:13:00 REFORM SC SPOT TOUTS BAD SPENDING PRACTICES, NOT INCLUDING $101K GIVEN TO THEM BY GUV With the twilight of his governorship fast approaching, South Carolina’s Mark Sanford has embarked on a new journey to keep himself relevant. That journey is called “Reform SC” and the governor has just released its first television ad. But since he can’t really run for anything in this state, and since he pretty much threw away his shot at becoming the next vice president, I’m guessing the objective of this is to make Sanford the Supreme Commander of his own cult. They could be called the Sanfordites and build a nice little compound somewhere in Marlboro County. In the 30-second spot attacking the legislature’s out-of-control budgetary waste, Sanford says, “I’d simply ask that anyone who believes in this notion of responsible spending and limited government to take action by calling their local senator or representative.” While he makes a gre...

BREAKING: Sanford?s (Port) Royal mess gets dirtier
2008-04-09 21:29:00 FORMER PORTS AUTHORITY CHAIRMAN DIVULGES DETAILS OF GOVERNOR’S INVOLVEMENT IN PORT SALE Gov. Mark Sanford attempted to influence the state’s multi-million dollar sale of Port Royal in an attempt to win the deal for a campaign contributor, the former chairman of the State Ports Authority said Wednesday. Bill Stern told lawmakers that the governor urged him to reconsider developer Jim Chaffin, who The Palmetto Scoop reported in February had given thousands of dollars to Sanford, after Chaffin’s bid for the development rights to the port property came in far below the appraised value of the land. According to the Associated Press: Stern says the governor asked him to negotiate with Chaffin for a higher bid and the state should do business with the Hilton Head Island developer. Both Stern and Sanford in previous interviews with The Associated Press have denied the governor tried to steer the sale to a specific developer. Stern is telling lawmakers about the Port Royal ...

Sanford disses Tompkins
2008-04-03 17:34:00 SAYS POLITICAL OPERATIVE, LOBBYIST IS ‘PROBLEM’ FOR CONSERVATIVES I’m not sure what exactly caused this little tiff to come up now, but Gov. Mark Sanford took a pretty good pot shot at a once-powerful and much-maligned South Carolina political consultant and lobbyist in McCain Veepstakes: Old School Sanford" target="_blank">a recent interview with Human Events‘ John Gizzi, calling him a “RINO” and a “problem” for conservative Republicans. “Because the bottom line in South Carolina is we absolutely have Republican control, but we do not have a conservative working majority in our body politic,” [Sanford said …] “I guess some folks call folks like that ?rinos? [Republicans In Name Only], I don?t know what you call them, but the bottom line is a lot of folks with whom we?ve indeed had troubles have not been pushing conservative ideology.? He specifically singled out Warren Tompkins, top political operative for the...
Sanford: No Real ID extension (UPDATED)
2008-04-01 01:07:00 GET YOUR PASSPORTS READY Gov. Mark Sanford just announced that he will not ask for an extension to implement the federally-mandated Real ID program. He had until today to file for more time and, according to the Associated Press, he chose not to do so. The decision means South Carolinians may not be allowed to board airplanes or enter some federal facilities using only their state-issued driver’s licenses. They’d have to use a passport or go through more rigorous screening. Sanford’s decision came on the deadline to ask for more time to comply with the law. The state Legislature last year passed a measure that bars South Carolina from complying. Sanford and other governors have complained the Real ID measure costs too much. The Real ID law calls for more secure identification cards in the wake of the 2001 terror attacks. Sanford says South Carolina already meets all but a couple of the standards. [AP] This issue has been used by both Sanford and the General Assemb...
Graham on Sanford?s veep prospects
2008-03-27 01:54:00 HOW DO YOU POLITELY SAY ‘NOT A CHANCE IN HELL’? If I ever get a job as a South Carolina employment commissioner where I can make nearly $200k per year for doing absolutely nothing, then I think I will buy The State’s editorial page editor Brad Warthen a tripod for his camera. He gets all of these great people to come talk to him, and he asks good questions, but he never uses a tripod. It makes his interviews like watching the Blair Witch Project if the Blair Witch Project had a plot and was about Palmetto State politics. But the clip he posted today — motion sickness aside — was quite good. It featured Sen. Lindsey Graham essentially shutting the door on media-perpetuated rumors that Gov. Mark Sanford will be GOP presidential nominee John McCain’s running mate. Of course, this isn’t news to The Palmetto Scoop readers, because I wrote two months ago (and at least 598,378 times since) that Sanford missed the boat. In Warthen’s clip,...
Sanford and Aide Not Telling the Truth
2008-03-22 13:00:00 In rapid succession, two recent op-eds have been published by Governor Mark Sanford?s apologists with me as their target. The first by Ashley Landess (?Our S.C. ports must remain competitive,? March 5, 2008) was simply misinformed. Ms. Landess would be wise to do a fact-check on information the governor?s office provides her before firing off opinions. Contrary to her summary of my views, I have always advocated partnering with private companies to help raise funds for the future of our ports. I am simply opposed to completely turning over the management of our vital ports to a unionized company, which Governor Sanford has been aggressively pushing behind the scenes for years. The more serious attack was made against my character by Tom Davis, the Governor?s chief of staff (?Ethical issues required Campbell?s departure,? March 7, 2008). Mr. Davis was attempting to refute my statement that the Governor removed me from the Ports Authority Board because I didn?t support his agenda ...

SANFORD ENDORSES McCAIN!
2008-03-06 23:47:00 GUV STILL WEIGHING OPTIONS FOR 1948 TRUMAN, DEWEY RACE In a “ringing” endorsement given through HIS SPOKESMAN to the Associated Press, Gov. Mark Sanford has FINALLY endorsed Republican presidential nominee John McCain. A full two days after McCain locked up the party’s nomination. Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer says the governor said all along said he would support the Republican Party’s nominee. Sawyer says that Sanford thinks McCain will make a great president. Sanford had been a state co-chairman of McCain’s 2000 campaign in South Carolina. But this time around he kept his preferences to himself before and after the first-in-the-South primary on January 19. [AP] How freaking lame. Not only does he lack the cajones to back his party’s nominee, but when at long-last he summons the “courage” to do so, he does it through a spokesman. Not himself, someone else. And not even a direct quote from the spokesman, just a pair of paraphrase...
Frustrated Sanford shows bad judgment
2008-02-28 05:03:00 Sanford scores big on bad judgement By Andy Brack SC Statehouse Report FEB. 17, 2008 – You’ve got to feel, at least a little bit these days, for Gov. Mark Sanford. After more than five years as governor, he’s got to be increasingly frustrated with his few accomplishments. And after a recent spate of bad judgments, it shows. Consider: Port Royal mess. Lawmakers are considering looking more closely into some calls made by the governor surrounding the selection of a developer for the future use of the Port Royal port. Sanford acknowledged to the Associated Press that he called two top officials at the State Ports Authority to underscore reservations about the developer. Sanford, who abstained from a vote on the deal when it reached the Budget and Control Board, said he was acting as a watchdog for taxpayers by doing limited “due diligence” through his experience as a real estate developer. While the governor likely was just trying to be helpful, any time the state...

Sanford on FOX News Sunday
2008-02-25 17:49:00 Gov. Mark Sanford was reportedly “giddier than a little girl” at the opportunity to sit with the big boys on Fox News Sunday. Of course, as I noted last week, the reason he did that was because he is NOT concerned with being the Republican vice presidential nominee but rather working for the people of South Carolina. By going to Washington and being on national television. You can read that however you want to, but one thing that was universally agreed upon about Sanford’s appearance was that it was nothing short of the expected humdrum performance that has come to define our wonderful governor. He danced around the POTUS-lite question by saying, “You worry about these kinds of lightning strikes when they come your way, but you don’t worry about them until then. I mean, you focus on the job at hand.” If anyone knows what the hell that means, please let me know. Thankfully, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty got most of the attention because, after all...
BREAKING: Sanford received money from would-be Port Royal developer
2008-02-23 23:32:00 CHAFFIN, WIFE GAVE THE GUV $4,000 PRIOR TO HIS INVOLVEMENT A scandal surrounding Gov. Mark Sanford’s alleged unethical actions in interfering with the South Carolina Ports Authority’s bidding process is growing legs in light of new information obtained by The Palmetto Scoop that shows a monetary link between the state’s top executive and a Lowcountry developer. Last week, the Associated Press reported that the governor “enmeshed himself” in the state?s $26 million sale of Port Royal — South Carolina?s smallest state-owned port — when he admitted to speaking with Jim Chaffin of Chaffin/Light Associates as that company vied to buy the property. Sanford denied having a role in the bidding process but, according to the AP’s story, said he liked the developer?s ideas and that he was simply attempting to gather as much information as possible to help the residents of Port Royal better understand the project. But it now appears that there ma...
Still think Sanford doesn?t want to be VP?
2008-02-22 22:13:00 It’s very rare that Gov. Mark Sanford says something that I actually believe. So why should his feigned indifference toward becoming the Republican vice presidential nominee be any different? Because it shouldn’t, that’s why. Just two days ago Sanford was saying that “it’s just not something that’s on my radar screen.” Hence, it’s only natural that his next act would be to go on FOX News Sunday’s special on “Four Influential Governors” who are rumored to be the presumptive frontrunners in their party’s veepstakes. The race for president continues to heat up, as both parties get closer to a nominee. The candidates continue to campaign hard in the upcoming primary states before Super Tuesday II. Can Senator Clinton overcome Senator Obama’s winning streak? Meanwhile, Senator John McCain looks like the clear frontrunner for the Republican Party. We’ll talk politics and policy with four influential gov...

McMaster standing up for Sanford?
2008-02-18 19:44:00 Gov. Mark Sanford and Attorney General Henry McMaster have never been the best of friends. It certainly wouldn’t be a stretch to say that John McCain and Mitt Romney probably have more affection for each other than these two. So why the hell is McMaster sticking up for the Sanford at a time when others are questioning the governor’s attempts to attain unchecked power? While Sanford has been accused of trying to overstep his authority, some of his fellow Republicans see the moves as consistent with a governor who said he wants more accountability in state government. They even include examples that have earned Sanford criticism: a call late last year to a judge hearing an annexation case in Jasper County and recent word of Sanford’s involvement in the sale of port facilities in Port Royal. “His views and direct inquiry into matters ? from the workers’ comp case all the way to this phone call to the judge and to the inquiry about the bidder on the port ...
Sanford wins MTP veepstakes
2008-02-18 17:03:00 EVEN THOUGH HE’S NOT CHEERFUL As much as I respect Tim Russert and believe he is one of the best journalists to ever cover politics, watching Meet the Press feels like sitting in a stuffy nursing home surrounded by dusty antiques and the smell of mothballs. So I don’t watch it very often and don’t really pay attention to much that ever happens on that show. Except for yesterday, when three out of five panel members named Gov. Mark Sanford as their choice for John McCain’s presidential running mate. Kate O’Beirne, Margaret Carlson and Albert Hunt all put Sanford on their really short lists. Which reaffirms my point that people outside of South Carolina don’t know Sanford like we know Sanford. That’s because he has used his time in office to cull his national image while antagonizing everyone in this state. Thankfully, the vice president doesn’t really do anything — except sit a heartbeat away from leading the free world. And S...
Sanford embroiled in port scandal
2008-02-13 23:34:00 In an overzealous attempt to wield autonomous control over the South Carolina Ports Authority, Gov. Mark Sanford may have taken a number of inappropriate actions to influence last year’s $26 million sale of former port facilities near Beaufort. The Associated Press is reporting that, during the bidding process, Sanford conferred with one developer and undermined another. Sanford, a real estate developer himself, said he simply was bringing his professional relationships and expertise to his role as a watchdog for the state’s finances. He denied doing anything in an attempt to steer the sale to a specific developer or interfering in the bidding process. But the governor’s actions in the run-up to the sale of land give his critics ammunition and could add weight to a lawsuit brought by Carroll Campbell III, an ousted member of the Ports Authority who accuses Sanford of abusing his power. “Mr. Campbell is concerned about, and has to question, the actions by Gov... |
