'Satanic Verses' play premieres in Germany

Al-Arabiya -- The play, adapted from Rushdie's 1988 book, was reworked for the stage by the manager of the Hans Otto Theatre in the eastern city of Potsdam, Uwe Eric Laufenberg, and dramatist Marcus Mislin.Amid heavy media coverage of the upcoming premiere, the general secretary of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, Aiman Mazyek, urged followers of Islam to remain calm over the staging of the play and engage in a "critical and constructive dialogue" about the issues it raises.But he also questioned whether the play might go too far.

Salman Rushdie's knighthood has reignited the debate about his book The Satanic Verses.In Germany recently the debate took an unusual turn with the writer Gunter Wallraf volunteering to read passages from the Rushdie tome in the proposed new mosque in Cologne. Walraff claims he is interested in taking up the claim by the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs that it wants the mosque to be a center for transparency and dialogue.The Cologne mosque, if completed will be the largest in Germany. The project has drawn protests from the far right. Anti-mosque demonstrators have come from as far afield as Austria and Belguim in order to protest what they describe as the "Islamization of Europe".The right wing mosque opponents have made it difficult for those who oppose the mosque for other reasons to make their opinions heard. With all this controversy about Rushdie’s knighthood I thought it would be interesting to post a little about what’s getting people’s backs up. Why people believe he deserves to die. Rather than posting some text, I’ve found the man himself reading a section from ‘The Satanic Verses’. LINK I think it’s rather funny. I’ve not read it myself but if the rest is as good it might be worth finding a copy. Has anyone else read it? Worth spending a few $$$ on it?
