German newspaper Die Tageszuitung runs satirical Obama cover
2008-06-07 14:04:00 A newspaper in Germany, Die Tageszeitung, has caused a bit of a stir by running a picture of the White House on its cover under the title "Uncle Barack's Cabin."The Uncle Barack reference is a play on "Uncle Tom's Cabin" - the title of the anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher-Stowe. "Uncle Tom," has come to be used as a put-down of African-Americans who are perceived as being too deferential to whites.Die Tageszeitung or Taz is a left wing German newspaper that tends to be politically correct. Germans have expressed surprise at its cover - a few have called it "racist."Taz editors claim the cover is intended to be satirical:"The fact that he (Obama) is African-American plays a constant role in the campaign, but no one talks about it explicitly. One can play with that fact."In fact there has been a great deal of discussion in the US media about Obama's mixed family background - the Kenyan ancestry on the father's side. There has also been discussion about the fact that he didn...

[Interview] Matthew Moses, author of 'Anti-Christ: A Satirical End of Days'
2008-04-08 13:48:00 Matthew Moses has a degree in Political Science from Indiana University with a minor in History. He has worked for a South African periodical and has written three novels of which Anti-Christ: A Satirical End of Days (Booklocker, 2007) is the latest. Moses has also written a screenplay for an independent film.In this interview, Matthew Moses talks about his concerns as a writer. When did you decide you wanted to be a writer? That is a funny story. I never gave much thought to writing until I met this one psychic. She told me a few things that came true and then piqued my interest by telling me I had a future in writing.I’d always been interested in writing before that. I wrote a screenplay when I was seven and various short stories for my own amusement throughout my childhood and teenage years. I also had a weekly column in my college newspaper that garnered a cult following. I guess you could say I’ve always loved writing. It took a psychic to point it out to me.How would you desc...

Philip Roth’s “Our Gang:” A Satirical Purgative for the Last Seven Years
2008-01-03 09:59:00 by Robert Weitzel Okay, so it’s New Year’s morning 2008. Big deal! I have a raging head cold and there’s still 385 days until... what... a new president... a new hope for the democratic experiment of our Founding Fathers... until my sinuses stop feeling like an unanaesthetized root canal. Quarantined by my wife, and in the velvet grip of an antihistamine-induced torpor, I’ve had uninterrupted moments to ruminate on the democratic malaise — some would say cancer — that has been developing these last seven years in the land of “liberty and justice for all.” Groping for synthesis through a medicated fog I decided to reread “It Can’t Happen Here,” by Sinclair Lewis and George Orwell’s “1984.” Like many Americans, I’d read both novels a long six years ago. But while searching my library for the books, I stumbled upon a long neglected political satire by Philip Roth called “Our Gang.” The caricature of Richard Nixon’s scowling mug on the cover convinced me that it was just the spoonful...

2007-12-10 02:00:00 From The Secret Art of Graffiti Removal group on Flickr Most would argue that graffiti removal is at best the elimination of vandalism or at worst the destruction of art, right? The Satirical Art of Chris Mars
2007-12-05 16:09:00 The face of humanity is a face with two eyes to see, a pair of lips to speak and a pair of ears to hear. But sometimes humanity is two faced. The face is not always beautiful. The miraculous ability to empathize and love makes us angels among the living. Our egotistical hypocrisy makes us ...

Moral Primitivism Anyone? A Satirical Examination of an Apologia for Indust
2007-11-28 23:48:00 by Jason Miller “Again, if PETA is putting something out, I will always have my doubts - they see things one way and one way only. Theirs. In many ways the activists in this country are terrorists of a kind….” -Excerpt from an email written by a heavily indoctrinated and reactionary US American For a year now I have been an ethical vegetarian. Last Thanksgiving, I made what I thought was an enlightened moral decision to stop eating meat and to severely restrict my egg and dairy consumption. However, an email recently hit my inbox that presents such a powerful argument justifying the wanton torture and slaughter of animals (so we can please our palates) that my moral sensibilities and capacity to reason have been utterly disarmed. Signed with a cryptic “JC,” this missive pummeled me with points I had not even considered when I made what I now rightly view as my ridiculous decision to go “meatless.” In fact, rarely a day goes by that I don’t catch scent of the punge...
Madeleine McCann : German Satirical Mag Runs Fake "Find Maddie" Ad
2007-11-02 11:34:00 The disappearance of 4 year old Madeleine McCann while on vacation with her family in Portugal has produced media coverage that on occasion has become almost soap opera-like.The circumstances surrounding the crime have led more than a few people to question the role of the parents in their daughter's disappearance. If instead of being white, attractive looking young English doctors, the McCanns were overweight semi-literate dishwashers of uncertain ethnicity, you can be sure they would be a lot more suspect in the eyes of many Brits. The glossing of the McCann's image by the UK media has amounted to a window dressing job designed to generate sympathy. In some tabloid instances it has amounted to unabashed jingoism - an effort to whip up patriotic support, with the Portuguese authorities being portrayed as the bad guys.A great many children have gone missing in the UK over the past decade, many of them black children. None of these victims have received even a fraction of the cove...

Putin Wins Satirical Prize For Obstructing Free Press
2007-06-19 20:24:00 Russia's President Vladimir Putin has been awarded the "Closed Oyster," a satirical prize granted by a German media group for obstructing freedom of the press. Netzwerk Recherche, a small German journalists' organization that promotes investigative journalism, singled out Putin for "hampering the development of free media" and allowing a "lack of results in the investigation into the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya." Putin is the first non-German to receive the organization's negative prize. In December 2006, the Paris-based nongovernmental organization Reporters Without Borders called attention to the extent to which the Russian government and state-run corporations have taken over the country's main electronic and print media, greatly limiting the amount of independent news and information available to the public.
