Sweetie Saturday #116 - Hard-Headed Edition
2008-07-19 07:23:00
So I'm sure Sweetie said some hilarious things this week. I know she did, because I remember laughing. But, uh... I don't remember what she said that made me laugh so much.Well, I did write down one funny thing she said. But when I went back to reread it, it just wasn't as funny anymore. That made me realize that it's a good possibility that lots of what I write here at Sweetie Saturday is a heck of a lot funnier to me - and possibly my friends and family who actually know Sweetie - than to the majority of my readers. Sorry about that. But I will tell you this - and I imagine you can at least appreciate the following and how similar activities play out in your own homes...I love my morning routine with Sweetie. She's always told she can come to our room at 7 or 8 a.m. And so most of the time that translates into 7:00 a.m. exactly. As if she's been awake in her room for a long time, just waiting for her large digital clock to switch to 7:00. But lately, we've seen a few days at t...

Cubs forget how to hit over ASB From the Daily Herald: "It's hard to win with 1 run," said Piniella, whose team has lost two straight to fall to 57-39. "Look, we scored 2 prior to the break. We scored 1 today. I don't know if it's a combination of too much rest or too little. Whatever it was, we lost 2-1. Houston played a good ballgame. We'll come out here tomorrow and do the best we can. That's all." Actually, there was more. Piniella's club managed just 4 hits off Houston starting pitcher Brian Moehler and none against Geoff Geary over his 2 innings. Jim Edmonds gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead with a homer leading off the fifth. Cubs starting pitcher Ted Lilly worked 7 good innings, giving up a monster blast to left field by Carlos Lee in the seventh. The game ended quickly in the ninth, with Miguel Tejada and Hunter Pence hitting back-to-back doubles off Bob Howry with no outs. The pitching isn't what has Piniella concerned. It's clear Piniella can't wait for leadoff man and p...

So John W. McBush "won the week" according to something called "The Note" by (in addition to having one of his surrogates call Americans whiners, as well as McBush mixing up the Steelers and the Green Bay Packers) kicking out elderly librarians from campaign events, did he? And class move to claim that it was the Secret Service's idea, when in fact it was his campaign......and here's more lies; for starters, he opposed the Lilly Ledbetter Pay Act (more noted here)....I knew Edwards wouldn't have voted for FISA anyway, but he confirms it here......and here's "Free Evenings And Weekends (The FISA Song)" by Max And The Marginalized (here).
Saturday Love Thread: Rich Harden to Lead Cubs Against Giants: 12:05 CT/1:0
2008-07-12 16:00:00
Hello, Love Today is the big day. Now that Gallagher allowed two hits in 7 innings yesterday and Murton, of all people, drove in two runs, it's time for Rich Harden and his allegedly dead arm to step up and make us all feel fan-freakin-tastic about this trade. I can't help but feel that this year is Bizzaro Cubs Year 2008. The Cubs, who have never been known for patience at the plate, lead the NL in OBP. And aren't we usually complaining about our pitching at this time of year? Instead, we have arguably the best rotation (on paper, anyway) in the NL, if not in all of baseball. And when the perennial clamoring for another strong starter began in earnest, Hendry went out and got not Steve Trachsel or Glendon Rusch, but RICH HARDEN. Fire up your generators and load up on your potted meat, because the apocalypse is at hand. Until then, though, let's all enjoy the ride. Lucky for us, today's game is on FOX, which means we all can hold hands, huddle together, and prepare to be impre...

I have to put my shoes on, Mama, so when I run around, I won't stubborn my toes.------------------------------------------Hubby and I are now reading The Magic Treehouse series to Sweetie at bedtime. We've finished the first book and, earlier this week, Hubby started the second one - The Knight at Dawn.Well, you know Sweetie and her love of homophones! So we thought we could really impress her with telling her the difference between Knight and Night. But we asked her first if she knew the difference.Yep. She knew the definition of Night just fine. And as for Knight? Easy peasy! That's a metal man!-------------------------------------------------------Spea-king of The Magic Treehouse stories - Sweetie received the first four books as a gift at her half birthday party. Her friend I____ from pre-school gave them to her. His mom told me how much I____ loves these stories, and she knows that Sweetie and he would often play adventures together at school. So she thought Sweetie would really...

Ramirez punishes Giants From the Trib: For decades, a starting pitcher's routine at Wrigley Field has included walking out and seeing which way the flags are blowing. Jason Marquis couldn't have liked what he saw on a sweltering Friday morning. "The wind was blowing out during [batting practice]," he said. "And we were having fun watching Carlos [Zambrano] hitting fly balls out of the ballpark." Not long after, Marquis was in the clubhouse, watching television and surely wondering whether the Giants could hit more home runs than the seven the Reds did the day before. "A couple of guys came in and said, 'It's like 15 degrees cooler and the wind's blowing in,' " Marquis said. "And everybody thought they were joking." If there was a joke, it was on Cubs and Giants hitters, whose confidence level took a jolt when the game-time temperature was 72 degrees and the wind was coming off the lake at 12 m.p.h. And while Marquis pitched seven shutout innings, it was, unbelievably, a home ...

The Good For those of you who missed the game last night, you missed 6 strong innings from Z and a pretty good dugout argument between Lou and Z about when, exactly, Z would be . . . taking a break. . . from pitching for that game. Carlos won the argument and strode out to the plate in the top of the 7th with a bat in his hand and a smug look on his face. Guy who can break bats over his knee 1, Old Chubby Coaches 0. And I kind of have to agree with Z. I think I'd rather have him bat than any of our pinch hitters. The Evil The good news is that Z looked strong and we picked up a game on the stinkin' Cards. The bad news is that today a thus-far erractic Ted Lilly heads to the mound against Kyle Lohse, who's been pretty darn good so far this season. I mean, good for for Kyle Lohse. It's not like he's going to win the Cy Young, but still, he can probably make us look bad. Let's hope that the 2007 Ted Lilly shows up for this game, because the prospect of getting out of St. Louis ...

Speaking only for myself......I want to declare independence from this guy.

Now this is a twist! Right this minute, as I write this, Sweetie is up in her room reading a book. I mean, actually reading it! Usually she nags me to wake up then, while I'm in the bathroom getting ready for the day, Sweetie either snuggles in our bed next to Daddy or she quietly watches a cartoon on our upstairs T.V. But today? She suggested to me - Hey Mom. How about instead of me watching T.V. while you get dressed, I read Corduroy instead?  Great! Then? When I was all set to come downstairs, she informs me she's still reading. That's fine. Take as long as you like. I'll be downstairs.Okay.Wow.----------------------------------------------The above was much different than wake up time a few days ago.Sweetie comes bounding into our room, full of energy (no, that's not the "different" part). When I finally get up, she waits for me while talking with Daddy (who's desperately trying to still sleep). *Anyway, she rambles on and on to Hubby about something, asking questions about th...

Welcome back Cubs win, Cubs win Up yours, St. Lou. From the Daily Herald: The normal order of the Cubs' universe looked like it might be starting to right itself Friday night. Ace pitcher Carlos Zambrano returned and gave the Cubs everything they wanted with 6 innings of shutout ball. The Cubs got home runs from Kosuke Fukudome and Geovany Soto. The relief pitching survived a homer by Albert Pujols in the eighth. And the strangest of all sights: Fireworks greeted the Cubs' important 2-1 victory over the Cardinals as Kerry Wood got Ryan Ludwick to end the game and earn his 22nd save. Actually, the Fourth of July fireworks along the Mississippi River started in the top of the inning and continued until after the game ended, providing a colorful and noisy backdrop. "I've never seen it in the bottom half of the ninth inning," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, whose team improved to 52-35 and increased its first-place lead over the Cardinals to 3 games. "It had to be a little distracti...

If you're new to LOHO (in which case you probably don't fully appreciate my love for the giant squid, either), we have an entire stable of them, and you're going to start seeing them.  A lot. Because if we ever needed a rally, it's now. I have nothing more to add. Just win. Linesups to come.

Ronny to Eric: "Don't call me off. I've got this one." All of the game recaps from yesterday are written by the Sox beat writers, so I'm skipping those. Plus, who really wants to read about yesterday? Uncle Phil ponders what if Fukudome went to the South Side From the Trib: If Fukudome had come to the South Side, life would have been so different for both of Chicago's first-place teams-and not just because so many among the 39,132 at U.S. Cellular Field would have been cheering Fukudome, not confusing him with a vacuum cleaner. As Piniella said Friday, "There are a lot of ifs in baseball." If the Sox had signed Fukudome, Nick Swisher wouldn't have been around to hit a grand slam and a double in Friday's 10-3 victory. The girls with the "Dirty 30" signs would have had to find another object of their affection, as he would still be in Oakland or wherever Billy Beane traded him. The White Sox wouldn't have needed to give up Ryan Sweeney and their two best pitching prospects (G...

Sorry. I got nothin'. Despite Hubby's being away for a few days this week, therefore putting Sweetie in my sole care (at least during the evenings - we visited Nana a lot this week), I've got nothing funny or remarkable to report on Sweetie.I guess, instead of paying much attention to Sweetie's typical silliness, I turned inward. In fact, it was a very busy "internal" week for me. Lots for me to do, think about, mull over, discover, and question for myself. Such as - why on earth am I normally such a patient person, but when it comes to Sweetie - it all goes straight out the window?Yeah - it's been a crazy week. The good news for you, though, is that Mama Monday will more than likely discuss some of what's been going on in my brain lately. So that'll be a deep, "meaningful" post to look forward to. Get psyched! But now? Nothing. Hubby's home, we've got a busy day ahead of us (what else is new?) and I am done.See ya Monday!

I just never get tired of looking at it Given the above picture, you guys probably think I'm going to write some snarky diary about the Sox. But you would be wrong. Instead, I'm going to tell you a story of community, humanity, and unconditional love. I arrived in my section yesterday, to find that the 50/50 split of Cubs and Sox fans were already fighting. At least two different sets of guys were separated by security before the game even started. After that, we took to booing every time someone in a Sox shirt entered our section, and the Sox fans returned in kind. Then he appeared at the top of the stairs to our section. Let's call him "Kenny." The round of booes for the slip of an Afican American man, roughly 45, in a White Sox t-shirt died out quickly as people realized that something was different about Kenny. It soon became clear that Kenny couldn't move the entire right side of his body. He stood at the top of the stairs, looking doubtfully down the steep concrete stairs...

Our little Decoder Girl has been hard at work again. The Scene:Last night, our living room. Sweetie is lost in her own world, busily coloring/doodling away in her coloring books - an engrossing, favorite new activity of hers. Hubby and I are seated on the couch, with some such "entertainment" flashing itself across the T.V. screen. Hubby asks me if I want to watch our latest Netflix arrival later, to which I say yes. Then he mentions how he's thinking of making "a mocha chocka naka naka" (translation - a smoothie drink, made with coffee flavored ice cream and chocolate sauce) later. (translation - after Sweetie goes to bed. She's such a mooch! - it's best just to sometimes leave her out of the smoothie equation). So that was that. Sweetie sat, still concentrating on her coloring. Hubby and I watched T.V. Then, about 15-20 minutes later, Sweetie gets up, climbs up on her Daddy, and says:So, Daddy. what's a mocha chocka naka naka?(I start to laugh, almost beyond control. Caption unneccessary Dotel, Linebrink signings pay off for Cubs Thank you, Kenny Williams. From the Trib: After being swept at Tampa Bay and arriving home in the wee hours of Friday morning, the Cubs started out looking as if they needed a nice, long nap. Danks held them to five hits over the first six innings with their only run scoring on Derrek Lee's double-play grounder in the first. But when Danks left the game with a 3-1 lead after giving way to pinch-hitter Juan Uribe in the seventh, the Cubs woke up to find reliever Octavio Dotel throwing batting-practice pitches over the heart of the plate. Lee drove a homer to right field on Dotel's first pitch to make it 3-2, and Ramirez hit his first home run of the game on a 2-2 pitch to ignite a few dozen beer showers in the bleachers. Then on to that fateful ninth... Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly survived a shaky start to pitch into the seventh inning, and reliever Bob Howry got the Cubs through the eighth. Brian Anderson doubled off ...

Take off, ya hoser While I would be the last to ever criticize my esteemed colleague, Umbra, I took issue with his list of "Things Canada Has Contributed to the World," yesterday. Specifically, while making veiled references to Bob and Doug MacKenzie and the Great White North, he left them off the list by name. Anyone who has ever seen "Strange Brew" or heard the MacKenzie Brothers' version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," knows that this injustice should not be allowed to stand. Umbra, I take issue with your list, Sir. and I think I've made my point. In related news, the Cubs are still in the Great White North today, taking on the Jays today. Again. Let's hope it's no longer throw-back time in Toronto, beacause I practically went blind looking at those horrible sky blue jerseys against the flourescent green astroturf. Something to do with words... Playing with and experimenting with words continues to be a major theme in Sweetie's life:Hubby put Sweetie to bed the other night and read to her a portion of her current bedtime book - A Little Princess. The last word he read that night happened to be "amiable".As told to me by Hubby, Sweetie thought this was hilarious!Amiable?! Like Mama's name? What does that mean?It means "friendly".Oh! Ha! Drats, foiled by retro jerseys. Turf not kind to au naturel Cubs Stoopid indoor arenas. From the Trib: The Cubs hadn't played a game on artificial turf since getting swept in Minnesota in 2006 and had not won a game on fake grass since Sept. 1, 2004 in Montreal, a game Kerry Wood started. Friday night was more of the same as Toronto squeezed out a 3-2 victory before a relatively sleepy crowd of 27,803. Back-to-back home runs by Matt Stairs and Scott Rolen off Sean Gallagher in the fourth gave the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead, and the Cubs offense couldn't get it together against A.J. Burnett and five Toronto relievers, leaving 11 men on base for the night. "We had chances, we really did," manager Lou Piniella said. "The big one was the double play by [ Ryan] Theriot with the bases loaded. Outside of that, we had a lot of chances. We didn't score runs." Piniella was referring to the Cubs' sixth, when they chased starter A.J. Burnett and pulled to within a run at 3-2. After Kosuke Fukudo...

BY ADAM RONIS Those damn Yankees!!! For the second time in three games, not only do I see the Yankees cost me save from my closer, but I have to see them get a comeback walkoff win in the process. On a day Mariano Rivera actually gives up a homer, it becomes secondary. Instead, Johnny Damon goes 6-for-6 with the winning hit. He also scored a run and had four RBIs with his 10th stolen base. As if the Mets don't provide enough stress, then I have to watch this. Jose Guillen started poorly and has come on strong. He went 3-for-4 with two homers and seven RBIs. He has nine homers and 45 RBIs. Jason Giambi hit his 13th home run and still has value. Jorge Posada hit his second homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score. I hope you listened and sold high on Brian Bannister in April. He's way too inconsistent and doesn't have great stuff. Joakim Soria blew his first save of the season. He went 2/3 inning and allowed three hits, two runs and a walk. He has a 1.67 ERA. Andy Pettitte...

Shouldn't Kuroda have to wear the same uniform as the rest of the Dodgers? Cubs get blanked From the Daily Herald: Sure, a couple of walks came back to bite Cubs pitcher Sean Gallagher in the end. But in the end, it really didn't matter because of what Gallagher's teammates were up against Friday night. Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda tossed his first major-league complete game, putting Cubs hitters to sleep during a 3-0 L.A. victory in front of 52,484 at Dodger Stadium. "It was impressive," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, whose club managed just 4 hits while falling to 39-23. "We didn't get very many good swings off of him. "We only had one inning, basically, where we mounted an offense. And he pitched himself out of a first-and-third situation, although I think our baserunner had beaten the throw to first base." More on that later. Gallagher came out throwing a good fastball and retired the first batter he faced before going 0-2 on Delwyn Young and walking him. Young scored on...

So you're a teenager!-----------------------Sweetie: What day is it today?Me: Thursday.Sweetie: Oh! I thought it was Saturday.Me: Nope.Sweetie: So today is the tomorrow after yesterday, then?-----------------------Las-t weekend Sweetie and I caught an early morning kid's show called Kid Guides. And thank goodness we have a sneaky Daddy who was more than happy to...
