Cheap and Cheerful Sauvignon Blanc
2008-06-03 12:48:00 The time of year has come where humidity has descended on the District and we have retreated into the air conditioning. When we do venture out, it's rarely without a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Thus I made one of my trips to Total Wine to scoop up a couple cases of cheap Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa. One of those bottles (all of which came in under $9 a bottle) was a 2007 Arakena Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. It clocked in at 13% alcohol by volume and had a plastic closure. On the nose I found lemon grass, grass, citrus, and lychee. I swear I almost thought I found the cat pee that you see in some Sancerre, but it disappeared so quickly that I think perhaps I imagined it. In the mouth I got peach, lemon, and grass. The wine was tart and a little bitter on the back of the palate. The wine was tasty, but not as refreshing as others I've had.

Perhaps A Bit Pricey
2008-05-20 12:55:00 *Disclaimer: I received this bottle as part of a sample pack.I received this bottle of 2006 Staete Landt Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from Bottlenotes as part of their blogger sample program. It had a screw cap, clocked in at 14% alcohol by volume, and costs $24 through Bottlenotes. Now, this was an excellent bottle of wine. I loved everything about it and would happily drink it again and again. I'm just a little concerned about the price point given the wide availability of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs at rock-bottom prices. However, this bottle was more complex, and it wasn't just in your face citrus (though don't get me wrong, I also love those), it was delicate, and blanaced. On the nose of the wine I found gooseberries, passionfruit, green pepper, citrus, and almost a creamy note, though the wine was unoaked. In the mouth, there was a lot of white grapefruit, followed by layers of tropical fruit and other citrus. It was tart and crisp in the mouth, but not in that mouth...

More Sauvignon Blanc
2008-05-05 13:46:00 It looks like summer is here to stay. We skipped straight from cold rainy days in the 30s-50s to sunny and 80...which is lovely, but sadly, won't last long and is just a tease before the 90+ full humidity days settle in perhaps 3 weeks from now.The wine for the evening was a 2007 Brutocao Sauvignon Blanc from Feliz Vineyard. We picked it up on our most recent Sonoma trip at the winery. It had a plastic cork closure, clocked in at 13.7% alcohol by volume and cost around $14 (last year's vintage price). On the nose I found lemon, melon, honeydew, pear, and a slightly floral aroma. In the mouth the flavors were citrus, lemon, and pear. I really wish the melon had carried through to the palate. The wine was crisp, tart, and quite acidic. Definitely a refreshing bottle of wine and certainly an easy one to drink on a hot spring/summer night.I served the wine with baked stuffed scrod, rice pilaf, and corn on the cob. It worked really well with the meal since the stuffing in the scr...

We've broken 80 degrees here
2008-04-28 13:31:00 Which to me means we have shifted almost entirely away from the heavy reds I love so much for the winter and into the Sauvignon Blancs, Roses, Gruner Veltliners, Albarinos, and, oh, who are we kidding, any crisp white wine that will beat the heat and humidity that comes from living in a swamp. With that in mind, the wine for the evening was a 2007 Ken Forrester Sauvignon Blanc. The wine had a screw cap closure, hailed from Stellenbosch, South Africa, clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume, and cost me $14.99 at The Winery in Old Town Alexandria.Dominate on the nose of this one was asparagus. There was no mistaking that one!. Other aromas were grass, gooseberries, lime, and a touch of pepper, the vegetable kind! In the mouth I found lime, gooseberries, citrus, grass, and more of the green pepper. This was a very tasty and spicy (because of the pepper) Sauvignon Blanc. Perfect for the weather and great with all the lighter cold pasta salads and white fish we'll be eating all summer...

Sauvignon Blanc Now With Yeast
2008-04-16 13:58:00 The wine for the night was a 2006 Quivira Sauvignon Blanc Complete. I believe they call it complete because it was left on it's native yeast lees for 7 months. Quivira is a Biodynamic certified winery, as of a couple of years ago, and I believe all of their wines are now Biodynamic. The wine had a real cork closure, clocked in at 14.2% alcohol by volume (a little high for a Sauvignon Blanc), and arrived in a club shipment. I don't know what it cost because the mailing didn't break it down and I haven't seen the bottle available on the website. I would really appreciate it if the wineries would include a breakdown of the cost of each bottle in the shipment (especially for reordering purposes). I know I've ranted about this before, but is it that hard to shove in a card that says: Sauvignon Blanc, $xx.xx?Anywho, on the nose of the wine I found lemon, pineapple, cream, slight cedar with a bit of oak, and star fruit. In the mouth the wine was full of tropical fruit, lemon, star ...

Sauvignon Blanc Season
2008-04-12 00:18:00 Finally, it seems, winter has loosened its grip on us. Or, to be more accurate, we’ve finally been treated to something resembling springtime weather: Yes, this past week, we experienced not one but two sunny, warm days. And, in fact, as yesterday was the first truly springlike day of the year so far, I marked ...

Farrah Olivia+ The Next Iron Chef
2008-04-09 13:39:00 We first visited Farrah Olivia in Old Town Alexandria with my dad. We didn't know anything about the place, but it was late, we were hungry, and it looked open. So we walked in around 9 at night and were seated immediately. I can say that such an occurrence is no longer a possibility since after we had been there, the owner and chef, Chef Morou, appeared on the Food Network show: The Next Iron Chef. It has been impossible to get reservations there ever since it aired, though I must admit, we were strangely excited when we saw that he was a contestant because we could actually say we had been to his restaurant. Though ultimately he did not win, his restaurant is still top notch in our book!We started the evening with one of the cheese course, this time the Vermont Cheese selection which came with bread crisps, several blue cheeses, honey, and popcorn. Our first wine for the night was a 2006 Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa that had a screw cap, clocked in at 13.5%...

Is it summer yet?
2008-02-27 12:47:00 Although I grew up in New England and didn't leave until about 5 years ago, I'm tired of winter this year. It hasn't even been a particularly bad winter here, and certainly not by the standards I was used to, but nonetheless, I want summer. So with that in mind I am pretending and drinking more Sauvignon Blanc. The bottle for the evening was a 2004 Mazzocco Sauvignon Blanc. It has a real cork, weighed in at 15% alcohol (holy smokes!), and cost us $14 at the winery. On the nose I found melon, grass, vanilla, oak, and lemon. I was surprised. I don't really remember tasting this wine at the winery, but I must have, and I usually don't care for oaked Sauvignon Blanc. In the mouth, the flavors were melon, lemon, grass, and lime. The wine was citrusy overall, but the oak gave it a really full body.

A Different Kind of Wine
2008-02-18 20:21:00 *Disclaimer: I received this bottle of wine from Bottlenotes as part of a sample pack.Several months ago (okay, perhaps more like 6 months ago) a PR firm for the wine club and online wine store Bottlenotes contacted me and asked if I would like to participate in a blogger trial of their online wine club. They gave me a credit which I could use to join any of their many clubs for a few months. After perusing the options, I chose the Dinner Party Club for 3 months, 2 bottles at a time. Though I must admit, I was sorely tempted by the Little Black Dress Club, I was curious about a wine club geared toward women and touted by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow! The concept behind the Dinner Party Club is just that, a dinner party worth of wines in a box. Though I would guess to get the full experience you would have to go for a larger shipment than the 2 bottle one, since that would give you the whole meal!I had to ship the club to my parents' house, since at the time (not sure if that's ...

2006 MADDALENA SAUVIGNON BLANC from SAN ANTONIO WINERY
2008-02-07 04:21:00 "That wine you got is great!", were the exact words #1 greeted me with tonight as I walked into the house from a hard days work. Or at least a days work! With that kind of endorsement behind it I couldn't wait to try it myself. From the San Antonio Winery located where? You guessed it, Los Angeles, California. Don't let the name of the winery, or its location in Los Angeles, California, dissuade you from trying their wines. If the rest of their offerings are as good as this one, I can't wait to get my hands on more. This 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, from their Maddalena Vineyards, is made of grapes sourced from the Steinbeck Vineyard in Paso Robles. On the nose we got loads of clean, fresh citrus and a touch of "grassiness" as the vineyard puts it. I think that's a good way to sum up the clean, refreshing nose on this wine. On the palate more of the "non-sour" citrus as I like to refer to it. No grapefruit here, just lots of melon, green apple, maybe some kiwi? A nice, semi-dry ...

Sauvignon Blanc Again!
2008-02-05 12:48:00 So there you have it. I drink what I want, when I want, regardless of the weather :) We drank quite a bit of Sauvignon Blanc over the last month or so, and particularly over the holiday season. The particular bottle for this night was a Nederburg 2005 Sauvignon Blanc from the Westeer Cape of South Africa. The wine clocked in at 13% alcohol by volume and cost me $11.95 at MV Wine and Spirit. On the nose I found kiwi, gooseberries, tropical fruit, and flowers. I really liked the nose on this wine. In the mouth the wine showed gooseberry, citrus-particularly lemon and lime, and a hint of tropical fruit. The wine was crisp overall, and tart, but not mouth-puckering like some New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, and softer than some of the bottles I've been drinking from Chile. I thought this bottle was a good value and one I wouldn't hesitate to pick up again.

Babich Sauvignon Blanc
2008-02-03 17:08:00 I picked up this bottle of 2006 Babich Sauvignon from Marlborough, New Zealand at MV Wine and Spirit in Madison, CT for $8.95. It had a screw cap closure and clocked in at 13.5% alcohol. On the nose I found gooseberries, citrus, and tropical fruit. The wine smelled crisp. In the mouth the wine was dry, crisp, and acidic. It showed gooseberries and citrus. The profile was typical for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but it didn't seem right. The flavors were forced and it tasted processed.

A Long Time Coming
2008-01-30 12:47:00 I've been drinking this bottle of wine for quite a long time, and probably should have gotten around to reviewing it well over a year ago when I first had a glass. My favorite bar in DC, Hamiltons, has this on their wine menu, and the bartender always has a glass almost poured for me as I come up the stairs! So when I saw the bottle of Veramonte Reserva Sauvignon Blanc at MV Wine and Spirits in Madison, CT, I had to pick it up, just so I could finally write about it! Dr. Debs over on Good Wine Under $20 wrote up the 2007 vintage recently, but I actually have the 2006 to tell you about. And it is the one I've been drinking for about a year. From Dr. Debs' notes however, I gather the 2007 is just as worth it as the 2006.The bottle cost $11.95 and clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume. It hails from the Casablanca Valley of Chile. On the nose, the wine smelled crisp, citrus, floral, and wine. In th mouth, the wine showed flavors of lime, and citrus. Overall the wine was crisp,...

Exploring New Kitchens
2008-01-24 12:48:00 The wine photos coming up for the next month or so were mostly taken in kitchens other than my own. We consumed A LOT of wine over the Christmas holiday and I am just caught up enough to start writing about it.One of the first was a 2005 De Martino Organic Sauvignon Blanc. It hails from the Maipo Valley of Chile, has a real cork closure, clocked in at 12.5% alcohol by volume and cost about $10 at MV Wine and Spirit in Madison, CT.On the nose I found lemon, flowers, grass, and peach. In the mouth, the wine showed citrus, lemon, and tropical fruit. It was crisp, but not nearly as tart as New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. I think the Chile style is good one for wine drinkers who want a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc but who can't stand the mouth-puckering acidity of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Definitely a good buy at this price point.

Kicking Some More
2008-01-11 13:44:00 What can I say? I like all wines, all the time, regardless of the weather! This bottle was a gift from a guest invited to our WBW Petite Sirah Blind tasting. He almost had me fooled, telling me that it was his brother's winery since he shares a last name with the wine. I felt a bit sheepish for buying that one hook line and sinker, but cut me some slack, we were through the 5 bottles of PS by that point....So the wine was a 2006 Gordon Brothers Sauvignon Blanc from the Columbia Valley, Washington State. It clocked in at 13.2% alcohol by volume. On the nose I found mango, pineapple, minerals, and something else tropical that I can't quite place. If you aerate your glass a bit the pineapple will jump up and bite you! In the mouth I got flavors of pineapple and mango, with almost a hint of cream midpalate. The wine was crisp, but not at all like a New Zealand or Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. It's a totally different style of Sauvignon Blanc for me. It seemed a lot more food friendl...

Amador Foothill Winery 2005 Shenandoah Valley Sauvignon Blanc
2008-01-10 05:15:00 Another half bottle from my local grocery store that I had to try... The 375 ml bottles are convenient and perfect when you just want a glass of wine and don't want to pop open a whole, 750 ml, bottle. The Amador Foothill Winery 2005 Shenandoah Valley Sauvignon Blanc is made from 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. It has a golden, light, straw color in the glass, and the nose shows prominently apple, but also citrus and green pear. The wine has a round mouth feel with apple, citrus, slight spice, and touch of minerals. The finish is long and carries good acidity. The very round mouth feel made this wine feel slightly to rich for my preference, considering it is a Sauvignon Blanc. I prefer a more lighter and crisper style. However if this is not the case for you I would deem this to be a good wine at a great value, available at Wine-Searcher.com from $9.60.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog Top!

SAUVIGNON BLANC

Not Quite Summer
2007-11-26 13:40:00 But I still love Sauvignon Blanc! And this one arrived in my latest shipment from Mauritson, whom I haven't had any new wines from in a year as they were kind enough to combine my shipments for me to help my wine budget! So I was very excited to try out some of the offerings from the past year. The wine was a 2006 Mauritson Sauvignon Blanc. It clocked in at 13.5% alcohol by volume, had a real cork closure, and cost us $13.60.On the nose I found figs, grapefruit, wet stone, grass, and mainly citrus. The nose was fairly reserved, but easier to detect after it had warmed up a bit. In the mouth I found peach, grapefruit, and minerals. The wine was acidic and crisp, but well rounded. We drank this on it's own one night, but I would serve it with crab or perhaps some nice creamy cheeses as an appetizer!

Not a good photo, but a good wine!
2007-10-15 13:32:00 Apparently I need to take the camera away from Matt. I occasionally ask him to take a picture of the wine for me because he is opening it and pouring it and I am curled on the couch and too lazy to move. This is latest result, see my birthday post for what was supposed to be a picture of the cake.....The wine was 2006 Doukenie Sauvignon Blanc that we picked up on our visit to Doukenie this summer. It cost us $16.20, had a real cork closure and clocked in at 12.5% alcohol by volume. The wine was finished in neutral barrels.Overall, the wine was light and crisp. It showed grass and tropical fruit on the nose. In the mouth the wine was very tropical, with pears and a crisp finish. This was my favorite from our visit to Doukenie. I normally don't care for a Sauvignon Blanc that has seen oak, but I do really like this bottle. I think it's the first Sauvignon Blanc I've seen from a VA winery and I'm fairly impressed!

Back in the Q
2007-10-11 14:40:00 After a LONG summer hiatus (and really, I probably should have held off given that the weather has still been in the 90s here) I am finally receiving wines from WineQ again! I am very very excited to be trying new wines that I have seen advertised all summer on WineQ and excited simply to have something different to drink!I put this bottle of 2006 Croze Sauvignon Blanc at top billing in my Q pretty much as soon as it was announced on the site. I had tried the Croze Rose back in July from my last WineQ shipment and really enjoyed it. I'm actually considering it as a Thanksgiving wine! So it was a no-brainer to add the Sauvignon Blanc. The wine cost $17.99 (free shipping!), was 13.0% alcohol by volume, and had a real cork closure. It hails from the Monte Lago Vineyards in Lake County. On the nose I found grapefruit, a sweet tropical fruit note, and pineapple. A very enticing aroma and it made me want to jump right in...especially given our weather....seriously, 90+ in October?? ...

2007-10-05 04:22:00 2006Sauvignon BlancMarlboroughWill drink again.A striking scent of lemon, grapefruit, thyme and pear. Served well-chilled, this wine was excellent with halibut (visit http://www.cheznathalie.com/ for the exact recipe). It tasted good on its own, but I enjoyed it more with dinner. It was slightly more acidic than I like, but most sauvignon blancs affect me that way (I'm a Chardonnay girl when I'm not all things red). What I really loved about this wine was that it was all fruit until it followed a bite of my halibut and then the oregano in the recipe suddenly burst forward following a sip of the wine. The taste was right on with how it smelled. Mostly lemon, grapefruit and pear up front, followed by a little acid, then thyme, then a nice subtle mineral finish.Questions remain unansweredFrustration mountingCandle burnsYears countingToo much unsaidWatch the flameConfusion becomes the normNothing remains the sameTrying to clear the headWanting shapelessness to take form7.75 out of 101...
Crab Legs and Sauvignon Blanc
2007-10-04 13:40:00 The bottle was a "Beyond" 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, by a winery named Buitenverwachting. Hailing from South Africa, the wine cost me $12.99 at the Winery, had a real cork, and clocked in at 12.5% alcohol by volume. On the nose the wine smelled creamy. I found aromas of lemon, lime, and grapefruit. In the mouth, the aromas of the nose followed through, with the wine also seeming a bit floral. It was crisp, but it felt heavier in the mouth than I am used to for a Sauvignon Blanc. Overall, I liked the display of citrus in the wine.I served it with snow crab leg clusters with drawn butter and fresh lemon. I tend to love to pair this meal with a Sauvignon Blanc and this was no exception!

WhiteHaven 2006 Marlborough New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
2007-09-29 02:12:00 Before summer comes to an end it's time to try a couple of more Sauvignon Blanc. Last night we opened a WhiteHaven 2006 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. I have enjoyed several great Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough this summer and this was a new arrival on the shelf in my grocery store that I had try.Greg and Susan White, and wine maker Simon Waghorn, established the winery in 1994. The production in 1995 was 5000 cases and next years production, 2008, is estimated to 200,000 cases so this is a winery that have grown quite a bit over the years. The wine has a clear, very light straw color in the glass. The nose is vibrant of citrus, under ripe white peach, and hints of grass. The palate is equally pungent with apple, citrus and kiwi, with really nice acidity. This is a dry and very refreshing wine but intense and bright on the nose and in flavors. If you like more austere whites with more emphasise on the mineral component my guess is that this is not so much for you.I ...

Kunde Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2006
2007-08-06 03:47:00 Here's a nice, refreshing sauvignon blanc that is priced very well.
Mathur Vada with Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa
2007-07-30 10:53:00 Dakshin at the ITC Park Sheraton, Delhi recently matched Kalyera thokku (lobster in an onion-based sauce) with a crisp Riesling. This was preceded by matching mathur vada, a Mysore vada, with a sauvignon blanc from South Africa. The bold match went down very well with diners. What are your most unusual (and successful!) food and wine matches?
Not a great picture, but a great wine!
2007-07-26 13:48:00 I just could not get the lighting for this picture to come out. I tried lights on, lights off, flash on, flash off, lights dimmed....then I finally just gave up because I really wanted to drink the wine. The wine was a 2006 St. Martin Reserve Sauvginon Blanc from the France Vin de Pays d'Oc. It weighed in at 12.5% alcohol by volume, cost me $6.49 at Total Wine and had a screw-top closure I believe. We drank this late one evening when it was far too hot to go to bed and a cold glass of wine sounded divine. The nose of the wine was floral with peaches and melons. I would also describe the aroma as being crisp and fresh. In the mouth I found melon and oranges. The wine had great acidity and balance and was perfect for the intolerable heat of the evening. I would definitely seek this one out again, the value for the cost was excellent.

And again
2007-07-16 20:43:00 You'd be drinking Sauvignon Blanc like it was going out of style too if you were living in 99+ degree weather with 100% humidity. It's rough to sleep, even with AC going full blast because it's still hot, so don't deny me my Sauvignon Blanc...if I can't sleep well, I might as well enjoy a glass of wine! The wine was a 2006 Anakena Sauvignon Blanc from the Central Coast of Chile. It was 13% alcohol and cost me $6.50 at Total Wine. I've been digging the Sauvignon Blancs from Chile lately, but sadly, this was not my favorite bottle so far. I was a bit disappointed as a fellow shopper told me it was fabulous, and the store recommended it as a top pick. I think my expectations were too high! The nose displayed tropical fruit and green apples. It smelled tart. In the mouth there were lemons and white grapefruit. It had racing, mouth-puckering acidity and was very refreshing. However, the acidity was too much for me! I love the tart wines, but I don't want to feel like I've been eati...

I am perdictable
2007-07-13 20:38:00 If for nothing else, you can count on me to keep it coming with the Sauvignon Blancs this summer. We have had the hottest week I ever remember in DC this week and I was very thankful I had made a trip to Total Wine for cheap and cheerful Sauvignon Blanc! The bottle was a 2006 Santa Maria Sauvignon Blanc. The wine hails from the Central Valley of Chile (perhaps beginning to replace New Zealand as my favorite place for inexpensive and delicious Sauvignon Blanc), clocks in at 13% alcohol by volume and cost me $7.99 at Total Wine.On the nose I found tropical fruit, hay and the gooseberry I usually expect to find in New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. It also had a slightly herbal note on the nose. The wine was heavier in the mouth than I had expected based on the nose, with grapefruit and tangy citrus. It could also be described as herbaceous in the mouth. Overall the wine was crisp and refreshing and definitely one of my favorite inexpensive Sauvignon Blancs to date.

2007-07-10 20:18:00 The wine is the 2005 Indaba Sauvignon Blanc. I grabbed the bottle at Total Wine for three reasons, one, it was cheap, only $7.99, two, I liked the design on the front, and three, the word "Indaba" rang a bell and it irked me, so I wanted to figure out why.Upon examining the label closely when I returned home, I discovered that the wine was 12.5% alcohol by volume, had a screw-cap, and was from the Western Cape of South Africa. And the word "Indaba?" It means a gathering, a forum for sharing, in Zulu. I knew it sounded familiar, I remember it from one of my all-time favorite books, The Power of One.Anywho, what I found in the bottle was a nose of lemon and grass with a hint of tropical fruit. The wine was very lemony in the mouth with herbal notes and limes. Overall, the wine was crisp, but not very complex. A perfect wine to take on a picnic or to the beach, especially with the screw-cap!

Sing Life?
2007-07-07 19:06:00 The wine is a 2006 Cantavida Sauvignon Blanc. Cantavida? Literally I think that means "sing life." Cantar is a verb that means "to sing" and "canta" is a conjugated form of the verb, meaning "he, she, or it sings." So "Life Sings" or "Sing Life?" I guess it can also mean to gossip in Chile, so that could be it too, since this is a Chilean wine....who knows, enough Spanish Lesson for today!I picked this bottle up at Total Wine for $6.99, it hails from the Central Coast of Chile, it had a plastic cork closure, and was 13.5% alcohol by volume. The wine was very aromatic. This was one of my favorite bargains at Total Wine and will be finding its way into my rotation of everyday wines. On the nose there were lemons, limes, passionfruits and other tropical fruits. A fruit salad in a glass! Not to mention the grapefruit. In the mouth, the wine was crisp with excellent acidity. The flavors showed lemons, so much grapefruit and green apples. I would certainly call this wine a refre...

Fat Ladies Sauvignon Blanc
2007-07-02 19:42:00 You didn't believe me about the deluge of Sauvignon Blanc I would be drinking, did you? If you were living in mid-to-high 90s weather with 100% humidty, you would be downing Sauvignon Blanc like it was going out of style as well!We drank this 2006 Fat Ladies Sauvignon Blanc from the Western Cape of South Africa while sitting around the other night. (See, I can break out of the box...South Africa instead of Marlborough!) It had a screw-cap, cost me $7.99 at Total Wine, and was 12.5% alcohol by volume. On those nose I found grapefruit, tropical fruits and lemons. The wine was very aromatic, I definitely didn't need to get my nose wet to smell this one. (Come on, I know you've done it too, stuck your nose so far into the glass that you actually get wine on your nose? No? It's just me? Well, it certainly wouldn't be the first time I've admitted to being an odd duck.)In the mouth I found more grapefruit, tangerines, lemons and oddly enough, what I can only describe as orange ...

Are you tired of Sauvignon Blanc yet?
2007-06-28 20:21:00 I hope not, because the summer weather is in full swing here and I will be downing bottle upon bottle of the crispest, most refreshing Sauvignon Blanc I can find until at least the end of September...unless of course someone wants to point me in the direction of other really refreshing summer whites! I do occasionally break it up with an Albarino or Viognier, so don't despair yet! This bottle was a 2006 Brancott Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand (sensing a pattern in my consumption habits yet?). I picked this bottle up on my recent Total Wine trip for $7.99. Overall, it, like my other Total Wine Sauvignon Blancs, was an excellent value and I would certainly recommend this bottle. On the nose there were tropical fruits including pineapples and various citrus fruits. I would describe the wine as smelling tart, if you can imagine that. In the mouth the wine was crisp with racing, tongue prickling acidity, just the way I like my Sauvignon Blanc. I found green apples, citrus a...

Birds on the Bottle
2007-06-22 20:06:00 More Sauvignon Blanc for our hot, sticky weather here in the mid-Atlantic region. I found this bottle of 2006 Fauna Sauvignon Blanc at my recent trip to Total Wine in Alexandria. It had a screw cap, cost $6.99, was 13% alcohol by volume, and hails from Marlborough, New Zealand (my favorite region for Sauvignon Blanc these days.)I love the label on this one with the pretty bird which I at first thought was a parrot, but now I'm not convinced. In any case, it's cute. Sometimes I can be a sucker for an animal label. Though this time, the stuff inside was pretty darn tasty. The nose of this wine was a fruit bowl. I got melons, green apple, gooseberry, and citrus. I would describe the nose as smelling very vibrant and fresh, as if the fruit were just picked and put in my glass. In the mouth I found mainly green apple and limes. The wine was crisp acidic, but not not tart to the point you pucker. Although the fruit was really pronounced in the mouth and on the nose, the finish was quick a...

Sauvignon Blanc Time!
2007-06-11 20:24:00 Be prepared- I love crisp white wines in the summer and Sauvignon Blanc often fits my perfect idea of what to drink in the 95+ degree humid summer days of Virginia. That's right folks, it appears that summer weather has arrived and is here to stay. Apparently we don't believe in spring in this area of the country and jumped straight from frigid to boiling.Which brings us to the night's wine. A 2005 Passalacqua Sauvignon Blanc the we picked up on our last CA trip. The wine cost $16, had a real cork closure and clocked in at 13.9% alcohol by volume. I believe we have two more bottles in the basement, though my organization structure got all rearranged with the move and hasn't made it's way to the top of my priority list to redo yet.I tend to jot down not very specific things in addition to flavors and impressions as I'm drinking my way through a bottle of wine, as I did with this wine. My first descriptor in my notes is "Yum." And really, that pretty much sums this bottle of win...

Hidden Treasures
2007-06-04 18:06:00 As you may know from reading, we've recently moved into our first house from an apartment. In our apartment, wine was squirrled in corners. While I have set-up CellarTracker to manage my wine, some of the bottles managed to escape me as they were hidden too well. Back in November I made a trip to Unwined for a mixed half-case of everyday wines. I thought we had consummed them all, but some had managed to elude their destiny for 7 months. No more I say!Since I love Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, I'm drawing a blank as to how I let this one sit around for so long! It was a 2005 Scott Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The bottle cost $14.99 at Unwined, was 13% alcohol by volume and had a screw-cap closure. The nose on this one was reserved, though I did pick up a bit of vanilla (odd) and a slight hint of gooseberry. In the mouth was gooseberry with a ton of citrus. Mostly lime all over the place, though there were hints of other citrus, grapefruit and lemon. Overall, the wine was light ...

Easton 2004 Sierra Foothills Sauvignon Blanc
2007-06-02 01:16:00 When we went up to El Dorado wine country in April earlier this spring I picked up a bottle of this Sauvignon Blanc at the Terre Rouge/Easton winery. Tonight, beeing Friday night, BBQing in the backyard, I thought this would be a great wine to start with as the food is cooking. I reviewed this wine briefly before, after our wine trip. Today I will go a little more into detail. This wine was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged in neutral French oak on the lees for 9 months. The majority of Sauvignon Blanc are aged in stainless steel to keep it clean and crisp. The oak, in this case, gives this wine a certain creaminess. It did however not go through malolactic fermentation which gives it the characteristic crispness we usually see in Sauvignon Blanc. This wine has a clear, light straw color in the glass. On the nose light tropical fruit, pear, citrus and a hint of butter scotch vanilla. On the palate there is citrus, light peach and pear, with a slight round creamines...

Drinking from my Q again
2007-06-01 21:24:00 I have a problem. When new wine comes in my door I get this nagging little voice in the back of my head telling me I should try it right.then. Such was the case when my latest WineQ showed up at my door. I managed to wait all of 3 days before jumping into this bottle of 2005 Lava Cap Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. The wine cost $11.99 (free shipping since my order was over $35 total!!), was 14.6% alcohol by volume and had a real cork closure. Have I mentioned how much I enjoy getting free shipping from WineQ? It's the shipping costs from my other wine clubs that kill me when I realize I could have purchased at least another bottle, maybe two for the price it cost to ship the wine!In the glass this Sauvignon Blanc wass straw gold in color, it really struck me as a pretty wine. The nose came wafting out of the glass with vanilla, lime and orange citrus flavors. A very aromatic wine overall. In the mouth I would describe the wine as creamy. I got flavors of lime, melon, oak and clementines i...

Run Rabbit Run!
2007-05-04 21:13:00 We had a bottle of Rock Rabbit Winery 2005 Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc while out visiting the in-laws in California. I picked the bottle up at Gouda and Vines in Montrose, CA for $9.95. It had a real cork closure and clocked in at 13.8% alcohol. The style of this Sauvignon Blanc was completely different from the Matua from New Zealand we had consumed the night before. While still crisp and full of acidity, it didn't have the same "zing" that the Matua did. I enjoyed both, but I really do love the New Zealand style Sauvignon Blanc. On the nose I found apricots, lemon, melons and hay. In the mouth I found peaches, limes and pears. We drank this on it's own one evening, though I would pair it with a nice white fish or crab legs. Overall this wine was crisp and had good structure in the mouth. The value was good as well, though for my tastes, I prefer the Matua at $7.95!

Summerland Winery 2006 Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc
2007-04-24 05:17:00 The Summerland Winery 2006 Central Coast Sauvignon Blanc has a very pale, brilliant, straw color in the glass. Stick your nose in the glass and discover tropical fruit, white peach and citrus. On the palate a milder citrus with sweet pear and the tropical fruit again. The finish is clean and fresh with uplifting, crisp acidity. A not to shabby Sauvignon Blanc.I got this at BevMo's 5 cent sale, which means that you buy one bottle for full price and get the second for 5 cents. So, I basically got this bottle for $ 8 ($15.99/bottle when not on sale). I say that is a very attractive price for a decent bottle. This would be a great crowd pleaser for that big summer BBQ, when you want to serve something good that won't brake the bank.Find it online at Wine-Searcher.com from $12.60.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog TopI am now in top 12!
